2 ESPLANADE ARTS & HERITAGE CENTRE Exhibitions Alberta & the Group of Seven MAY 26, JULY 14, 2018 This rare exhibition highlights the little-known relationship between early Alberta artists and members of Group of Seven, Canada s most celebrated and internationally known collective of landscape painters. Guest curated by Alberta art specialist Mary-Beth Laviolette, the exhibition includes paintings and drawings of Alberta by both the Group of Seven and early Alberta artists. Jude Griebel Ground-Figure: Sculpture MAY 26, JULY 14, 2018 Humour, pathos, unusual materials and an uncanny ability to represent the indescribable characterize this Alberta/New York artist s sculptures. Jude s beings and landscapes are interchangeable, with elements of each - plants, shells, trees, man-made environments and machinery - characterizing the other. Evoking a range of human emotions, situations and environmental disasters, the sculptures are at once whimsical and touching, dismaying and delightful. The Hunt JUNE 9 - NOVEMBER 3, 2018 What does it mean to hunt? Why do people still hunt in a time when food is easy to purchase? Who are the hunters and who were they? The Hunt museum exhibit is a detailed look at the history of hunting and wildlife conservation in Southern Alberta from the earliest human habitation to the modern day. Hunting has changed much over time, but has always been a part of the culture and traditions in Alberta. The Hunt explores the changes in hunting practices and attitudes to animals over time and looks at the role of hunting in culture today. The Tales of Slippery Annie (Archives Vignette) June 16 - November 3 The Archives has a lot of information on the prominent people who orchestrated the development of our City but what about everyone else? We re looking deeper into Medicine Hat s history to find Annie Moran, a.k.a. Gentle Annie, a.k.a. Slippery Annie. Prominent is boring, let s talk about notorious. The Last Hangman JULY 24, 2018 STUDIO THEATRE 7 PM The previously untold story of Canada s second-largest mass hanging which involved four Nazi POWs, a pedophile child murderer, and Canada s last (un)official hangman. Filmmaker Carla Olson returns to the Hat to unravel this local story through interviews, including her Great Aunt in-law who was secretary to the last hangman in Alberta.

TREX (Alberta Foundation for the Arts Travelling Exhibition Program) The Ties that Bind Cypress Hills Visitor Centre June 20-July 18, 2018 The concept of being tied or bound to others activates the exhibition The Ties that Bind. Whether depicted literally or through allegory, the imagery presented articulates, through the media of fibre and thread, connections between people; between people and the world around them; and between the past, the present and the future. Curated by Shane Golby White Nurse Medicine Hat Public Library June 20 - July 18 Medalta in the Historic Clay District July 25 - August 22 This exhibition presents a series of 20 artworks that are semi-autobiographical. The title references the slang term for heroin or morphine and speaks to Brennan s own experience prescription pain medication. This body of work is part of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts collection. Curated by Todd Schaber Mittenism and the Quest for Empathy Medicine Hat Public Library July 25 - August 22 This exhibition features a recent acquisition of etchings and lithography prints by renowned interdisciplinary artist Rita McKeough. McKeough translates her ideas through etching and lithography techniques, creating several series of works that use inanimate objects to explore the complex emotion of empathy. Curated by Xanthe Isbister The Wild Medalta in the Historic Clay District July 25 - August 22 Jenn Demke-Lange has combined traditional ceramic techniques, such as surface relief and overglaze, with digital illustrations to create a series of large porcelain plates. The overall narrative theme of these plates, and the exhibition as a whole, is based around her identity as both a Canadian and a mother. Curated by Xanthe Isbister
