The handgun must be kept in the vehicle in a closed container or compartment within the vehicle. It may also be stored in a locked container affixed to the outside of the vehicle. The vehicle must be locked except for when the permit holder unlocks the vehicle to get in or out, or to allow others to do so. What is CMS property? Board or school property is any school building, bus, school campus, grounds, recreational area, athletic field, or other property owned, used, or operated by the Board of Education. Who can keep handguns in their locked vehicles? Only people with valid concealed handgun permits. Can I carry my weapon inside the school if I have a concealed handgun permit? Absolutely not. Am I allowed to carry my weapon into the school if it is in a closed or locked container? No. Unless you are a law enforcement officer, under no circumstances are you (or anyone else) allowed to carry a weapon into schools, on school grounds, or at school events, even if you have a concealed handgun permit. What type of weapon may I keep in my vehicle on school grounds if I have a concealed handgun permit? Only a handgun.

2 SHOCKER STANDOUTS Congratulations to Kylie Hollingsworth (6th), Jack Maloney (7th) and Jesse Bell (8th)! They have been selected by teachers as South Charlotte Standouts for this week. South Charlotte Standouts are scholarly, honest, optimistic, caring, kind, energetic, and responsible (SHOCKER). On-Line School Payments (OSP) CMS has provided us with the opportunity to accept payments for school events on-line. It is much like Athletics Pay-to-Play, comes with a fee (4%), and allows you to pay at your convenience. If you choose to pay on-line, it also relieves our teachers from the time taken to do the paperwork and to receipt and turn in money or checks. Teachers will continue to take cash and checks as they always have. Just sign in to: osp.osmsinc.com/mgsd Choose your student s event and homeroom teacher, and make payment. The teacher and Financial Secretary are sent advisements of your payment. We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity. It is rolling out in all CMS schools this year. Through the year, events will be added including field trips, textbooks, fees, and other payments. The last day to register to vote in the November elections is October 11. You may pick up a voter registration card in the front or guidance offices of the school. Bond information is available on the CMS Website.

We have teamed up with Providence HS to collect as many canned food items for Second Harvest Food Bank. Thank you for your support. MS. BUTLER Ms. Butler joined the South Charlotte Middle School Community in January and is excited to teach students the art of dance. She was born in Amersfoort, Holland but claims Brewer, Maine as her home town. She attended the University of Maine at Orono in 2008, but transferred to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte to peruse her dream of becoming a dance teacher. In 2011 Ms. Butler was invited to become a member of Delta Alpha Nu, the first Collegiate Honors Sorority for excellence in dance studies. She is training to run a half marathon in 2014, and enjoys fall because of the great running weather! As any true New Englander would, she supports the New England Patriots, Boston Red Sox, Boston Celtics, and Maine Black Bears from afar.

CLASSics Ms. Williams 8th grade Science Class: We are just wrapping up Part 2 of our chemistry unit and beginning our third and final phase of chemistry this week.

7 CLASSics Ms. Williams 8th grade Science Class: We are just wrapping up Part 2 of our chemistry unit and beginning our third and final phase of chemistry this week. Last week students got a hands-on look at different types of chemical mixtures in our Mixing it Up! lab. To wrap up Chemistry Part 2, students will complete a mini-project, Amazing but True!. Students will research an amazing but true fact from the study of Chemistry and present it as a mini-poster. Lawson Campe, Stephen Perle, Will Snider, and Hannah Ross participate in the "Mix it Up!" lab. Mr. Young s 7th grade Workshop: Mr. Young s classes are finishing Unit D Chapter 2, and starting Unit D Chapter 3. The students just completed and reviewed their second quiz. While creating enjoyable moments in class, the students are doing well comprehending the Physics information; I am very pleased, because Physics is an extremely difficult unit to understand. We have completed several research assignments, to elevate the student s knowledge base. We have some additional fun projects planned for this unit, so stay tuned. SHOCKER SPORTS SHOCKER SOFTBALL The Shocker Softball team traveled to Community House on Monday.

The Cavaliers rallied in the 5th and 6th innings and scored three runs for a score of 6-3.

Your softball team competed against Carmel Middle School Wednesday. The girls were off and running in taking the early lead in the first inning 3-0.

10 SHOCKER SPORTS SHOCKER SOFTBALL The Shocker Softball team traveled to Community House on Monday. The diamond was assaulted with hits by everyone up to bat including a triple by Sydney Yoder to score 2 runs. After the first inning, the score was 4-0. The defense held tough. The Shockers scored two more runs in the third inning that were hit in by Lili Bowen to bring her total to 3 RBI s to increase the lead to 6-0. The Cavaliers rallied in the 5th and 6th innings and scored three runs for a score of 6-3. Natalie Hallman clinched the win in the 7th inning with an RBI and three strike outs to end the game with a final score of 7-3 over Community House. Your softball team competed against Carmel Middle School Wednesday. The girls were off and running in taking the early lead in the first inning 3-0. The offense never looked back continuing to widen the lead throughout the game. Natalie Hallman started the team off in the third inning giving the ball a ride deep into right center field for a homerun! The defense only gave up one run. All the Shockers played an excellent game. The final score was in the Shocker s favor Monday the team travels into Falcon territory at Quail Hollow Middle School.

11 SHOCKER SPORTS SHOCKER GOLF Last night in the cool gathering dusk at Raintree golf course, South Charlotte golfers faced off against Southwest. Because Southwest had to drive almost an hour to get here, we started very late. By the time full dark had arrived, we had completed only 5 holes. 12 SHOCKER SPORTS SHOCKER VOLLEYBALL The volleyball team won their third game in a row yesterday in a thrilling comeback at Community House. Community House crushed us by a score of 9-25 in the first game. The Shockers turned the match around in the second game winning to set up a third game tiebreaker. Our team played with poise and confidence in the third game and came out with an exciting win at Chloe Barksdale closed out the match serving four straight points. Anna Triggs and Piper Cole helped push our team to victory with outstanding serving. Annie Leonard and Riley Outen were a powerful force in the middle and lead the team in kills. This was a team victory and each and every member contributed. The volleyball team continued their winning streak on Wednesday against Carmel. The Shockers won in two straight by scores of & Erin Holtzapple and Riley Outen showed why they are captains as they calmed the team down during some struggles with smart, steady side out volleyball. Cammie Kamis was able to move the ball around and get many hitters involved. Annie Leonard continued her dominance in the middle and gets stronger every week. Ellie Wilkoff, Piper Cole, and Lily Siemasko made great passes and Carson Blalock had 2 big hits for points. Alleta Patterson played big on the net and recorded her first block as well as a big ace. Chloe Barksdale, Amanda Watson, and Anna Triggs served and passed the ball with great consistency once again. The Shockers continue to improve and are now 4-1. The team will be on the road next week against Quail Hollow on Monday and JM Robinson on Wednesday. Thanks to all the teachers that came out to the game Wednesday!
