2 Thank you!!! Thank you!!! Thank you!!! Thank you to Mary Catherine Dees, Christi Coverston, Lynn Pounds, Aimee Miller, Yolanda Wilmer, Nicole Love, Christie Kautter, Christy Livoti, Isabel Lockhart, Sue Allen, Daphne Katz, and Barbara Trimnal for sending in breakfast items for the Staff Meeting this week! It was appreciated! We love our Shocker parents! Sincerely, The Hospitality Committee ANGEL TREE UPDATE Come on Shockers let s work together and reach our Salvation Army Angel Tree goal! As of Friday morning, we ve collected $3,732, just under halfway to our goal of $8,000. We need to finish strong! 6 th Grade is out front, collecting $1, th Grade is not far behind with $ th Grade has $677, no doubt preparing for a surge in the final days. We only have TWO collection days left this Monday and Tuesday. If we reach the $8,000 goal, a teacher from each grade level will dye their hair purple or teal. If we raise $10,000, there will be a student/faculty basketball game during school AND the grade level with the most donations will get Open Lunch for a week. Thank you to all who have donated to this worthy cause. If you have any questions please contact Cynthia Siemasko at Cynthia.siemasko@gmail.com or Margot Strickler at MargotVOS1@gmail.com

3 CLASSics Ms. Rich s Sixth Grade Math Class Ms. Rich s math students have been busy looking into patterns and relationships between fraction representations and the amount of money raised in a fictional fundraising project. We folded our own fraction strips to help with this activity. They have used these patterns to interpret the progress made by students in the fundraiser. Students have also used the fraction strips to estimate the portion of the fraction that has been used or the amount left over. Then they can begin to order and compare fractions. As we continue with our unit on fractions, students will learn to express fractions as decimal and percent equivalents.

5 SHOCKER SPORTS Shockers sweep Falcons in Basketball Season Opener Both the ladies and boys basketball teams opened their seasons with victories over Quail Hollow last night. The boys won their game in overtime while the ladies were victorious In an exciting, back and forth contest between two good teams, the South Charlotte boys basketball team prevailed over Quail Hollow in overtime. Richard Laico made a game tying layup at the buzzer to force overtime, and in overtime, it was all Shockers. Swarming defense and floor spacing on offense allowed the Shockers to outscore the Falcons 10-2 in overtime. Sam Kagan led the offensive attack with 13 points, while Richard Laico added 11 points. Caleb Ogunmola and Christopher James had 10 points, and Ben Pedernales added 6 points. With the help of a 15-2 first quarter, the South Charlotte ladies basketball team pulled away from Quail Hollow A relentless offensive attack aided by timely defense, allowed the Shockers to have a big cushion on the scoreboard throughout the game. Lili Bowen paced the offense with 24 points, while Ashton Roess added 6 points. Madison Lark and Marlow Chapman each had 4 points, and Margaret Combs, Olivia Matthews and Taylor Gailunas each had 2 points. Both basketball teams will be beginning a three game home stand starting Monday night. The boys game tips off at 5:00 PM with the ladies game immediately following. Please come out and support your South Charlotte basketball teams.
