1 D YOUVILLE PORTER CAMPUS SCHOOL #3 Volume 2, Issue 2 November $.25 The Buzz DPCS3 or or Times The Viking The Big Story: High Schools by Stephanie Arroyo & Dora Lepsch High School is very important. According to Mr. Weiss, for seventh graders to get into high school they need to have their grades up. It is also good to have an idea about careers you are interested in. He also said that they should attend open houses and improve work and behavior. For eighth graders they have to definitely attend open houses. They should also read the high school suggestion guide carefully because there are changes. You will also need to ask your parents about the High Schools before you fill out the application. Additionally, you have to make sure that your attitude; effort, cooperation, initiative and study skills impress your teachers. For the 8 th grader, the first marking period grades are important for your application. Many schools also have entrance exams, auditions and portfolio reviews. Make sure that you find out what High Schools require before you Vinny s Views In this Issue: A Day in the Life of Mrs. Ricchiazzi - 2 Students of the Month - 2 Dear Pierre Advice Column - 3 Hoffman s Hotline - 3 Kudos - 3 Giving Thanks - 4 Entertainment News - 4 School Sports - 5 School News - 5 Art and Poetry - 5 Birthdays - 6 Horoscopes - 6 Grover Cleveland City Honors apply. Mr. Weiss thinks that high school will prepare you with good work habits for college. Have you ever really wondered how much your junior high career matters on getting into a good high school? This is a very important topic. Every one in the junior high should be concerned, do their best and work hard. The schools that you wish to send your application to will look at your grades from 7 th grade and the first marking period of 8 th grade. Many students slack off on their work and do not do their best. They will regret this in the long run. Furthermore, grades are not the only thing that these schools look at. They also look for teacher recommendations. So that means that we should all be on our very best behavior, participate in class, and try! I feel that high school is a very important step in a persons life. It has a role in that person s future. This step may determine what job field you enter for the rest of your life. Time is of the essence. I hope you all take this into consideration and do the best that you possibly can and make this the best school year ever.
2 A Day In The Life of Mrs. Ricchiazzi by Stephanie Aroyo The newspaper has just recently caught up with Mrs. Ricchiazzi. Her day at the school never ends. If she is not helping students catch up on their work, she is teaching someone something that they missed, or she s helping with the newspaper. She is a teacher that helps all the students. The first place we meet Mrs. Ricchiazzi is in the library helping students. She helps them in all different subjects. She makes learning fun in a way that you can understand it. The newspaper has found out these facts. Mrs. Ricchiazzi has been teaching for many years. She worked at the Blind Association and the Williamsville School District before coming to Buffalo. She is on many teams like the ISST, which helps teachers. She is also on a team that helps young pregnant teens. Mrs. Ricchiazzi works with all the teachers to make sure that none of the students fall behind. She also is helping with the newspaper this year. Mrs. Ricchiazzi feels that school should always be a safe place for the students, and a place where they can achieve their goals. Another thing she does is over seeing wonderful student teachers. As I said before she never stops moving. Mrs. Ricchiazzi is always doing something. She went to the Spanish room to assist Ms. Mantilla. She took all the students that didn t finish their test to Rm A lot of students like her and so do I. Another fact I found out is with everything that goes on at school she has 4 children of her own. Now try dealing with all of that at once. Well now that you know a little more about the life of Mrs. Ricchiazzi. I hope this informed you about what really goes on in the life of Mrs. Ricchiazzi. 3 Dear Pierre by? Kudos by Adrianna Aviles Dear Pierre, I am in 8th grade. I love school because at home, I get beat. Please help me. Troubled Dear Toubled This may be a problem too big for just me, although I don't believe this should be happening to you. Maybe you should talk to the Principal, or the Guidance Counseler. I'm really sorry this is happening to you and that I can't be of more help to you, but I'm sorry this isn't the type of questions I should be answering. Please find an adult that can help you with this situation. Don't let this continue without talking to someone. Do you feel comfortable enough with any of your teachers? I am sure they would not only help you but also would keep what you tell them confidental. There are many different ways to help you with this problem. Please talk to someone. I am sure they would help you out. Dear Pierre My friend makes fun of me because I'm not skinny but he's also not skinny. What should I do? Confused Dear Confused Maybe you should think twice before calling him your friend. Friends stay close and don't make fun of you for who you are. If he was your friend he wouldn't make fun of you if you were tall, skinny, short, or not skinny. Marisol Carrero is doing all of her work & is extremely helpful. Eric Velazquez has been helping new students. Chris Day has improved a lot since last year. He also had the best Abraham Lincoln speech in the 8 th grade. Mrs. Pizarro would like to thank the debate team for the great job that they did. She would also like to thank all the students for doing all their work. Mrs. Ricchiazzi is very proud of the fabulous job the newspaper staff did on the first edition. Keep up the great work!!! Many students and faculty wore Red Ribbons to take a stand against drugs. Think Twice Hoffman Hotline by Mr. Hoffman By: Pierre Hi Everyone, Well, its been 3 months now and things are still going good. Mr. Janiga will be happy to hear that I'm learning a lot of English grammar from my students here. I speak English all day and Spanish every place else. I don't know anyone that speaks English outside of school, so its Spanish for the rest of the day. I love it! One interesting place is the supermarket. There are so many foods that I don't recognize. I'm trying everything little by little. Mostly fruits and vegetables that I've never seen before. One of them looks similar to an orange, but has something that looks like frog eggs inside. Very weird. I ve been afraid to try that so far, but I will. I did see some lemon flavored potato chips and also some chips that said "pollo". I'm not sure if they were chicken chips or chicken flavored potato chips or what. In any case, very interesting. Another thing that kind of makes me laugh is that when the temperature drops into the 70's, some people put on their winter jackets. That's considered cold here. Imagine!... Well, anyway, I will keep you informed about all interesting cultural facts. If anyone has any questions for me, don't hesitate to drop me a line. (Mrhoffman306@aol.com) I will be traveling to two other cities (Bogotá and Cartegena) in the next few weeks, so I will let you know about that experience next time. Hope all is going well. Take care Chau!! VOLUME 2, ISSUE 2 Page 3

Giving Thanks by Gabrielle Fuentes Be Thankful For Everything - BY Gabrielle Fuentes Entertainment News by Arianna Ravenell A local radio station recently changed its format The station The River changed over night to WYLD This station mostly plays r&b and rap. Sometimes they play alternative music. The names of the dj s of the new station are both not fit for a school newspaper. This station is Canadian. Because the station is Canadian, they are allowed to play some of the bad words. All of my friends say that they liked the station at first. Then they started to play the same songs over and over again. If your listening to a station and they play to many commercials then listen to There the music is always on. Movie of the Month by Arianna Ravenell The movie of the month is the Ring. This movie is about a female journalist (Watts) who discovers a disturbing videotape with a bizarre history. Everyone that has seen the video has died within seven days. Is she next? This movie is rated pg-13 for scary images, disturbing images, language and some drug references Staring: Naomi Watts, Martin Henderson, Brian Cox, Shannon Cochran, and Lindsay Frost Page 4 THE VIKING
5 School Sports by Chris Aris Take a Stand by Kaysha Laurano I checked in with Mr. Chris and this year our school is going to have a good basketball team. A lot of my friends who are good basketball players are going to tryout and you should too. Also the girls cheerleading team has asked me to tell the boys in seventh and eighth grades that they need them to join. The boys should be strong because they need to be able to throw them up and catch them when they come down. If you are interested, see Mrs. Levi. She is the teacher who is coaching the cheerleading team and training them too. The Girls Basketball Team On October 23,2002 there was a rally called Take a Stand. Take a Stand is a community rally and to show your support you could have wore red. Take a Stand was a rally against drugs. It was from 5-7:30 p.m. At Take a Stand many people adopted a corner to take a Stand and they shouted out COUNT ON ME TO BE DRUG FREE! Cars would beep their horn if they would be drug free. We all had signs showing our support. After all that there was music, food and raffles. This event was very successful and fun to participate in. Halloween Dance by Kaysha Laurano Above: Josua Bocanegra s (6th grade) mummy project Below: Vincent Caito s (8th grade) art Project The Halloween dance was on Thursday October 31 from 12:45-2:00 pm, in the Gym. The Halloween dance was for students in Grades 5-8. Admission was $2.00 per person. This year for the first time, we will have two DJ s to entertain us. DJ Joey and DJ Chaz took requests. This was a costume party. The scariest, funniest, cutest, etc. costumes received prizes. Prizes included 2 movie passes. There were free drinks and cookies for everyone. Everyone seemed to have a good time. Poetry Promise Me by Marydona Bona Promise me you ll always be there when I need you, I promise that I ll always be here and that I ll never leave you. Promise to comfort me in my time of sorrow, and promise it won t just be today, but in each and every tomorrow. Promise to love me as a friend and even more when needed, Promise you ll always treat me, as you would want to be treated. Promise me you ll keep your promise, forever through our time, And promise that you ll always remember that my heart gave you this rhyme. VOLUME 2, ISSUE 2 Page 5
