1 A Division of the Wisconsin Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired A Division of the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction Volume 2 Issue 5 February 2002 Well, here it is February and we got our first snow storm. The weather has been mild, but I think some people are happy to see the snow. There is lots in this edition, so check out all the difference activities! Wisconsin School for the Visually Handicapped The Eye Spy Artists in Residence This year the WCBVI will be hosting an Artists in Residence program. This program will showcase the art, craft, and culture that staff creates outside of their workplace environment. On display will be architectural drawings, beadwork, books, clothing design, decorative arts, floral designs, graphics, jewelry, painting, photographs, quilting, sculpture, woodworking, and collectibles. These items will be on display for staff and students to view in the WSVH library on February 13, 14, and 15th. A small reception will be held on Friday, February 15 from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. to give everyone a chance to meet with the exhibitors. This is a fun event and there is not a prize for the best of show. The purpose of this event is that everyone will receive a nice feeling of knowing that they are special and that they are helping to make the work environment a positive one. Any WCBVI staff person that would like to exhibit should contact Kay Waelti at Kay Waelti, Administrative Assistant

3 Send A Valentine Thinking about sending a Valentine's Day card to that special someone? Worried about making a Braille error? Here is your solution. These websites were suggested on an on-line list for parents of blind children. Here are two sources to purchase Braille Valentine's Day cards: Note: The Wisconsin Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired does not endorse any vendors and can not speak to the quality or reliability of these online companies.-mark Riccobono, Center Director Trivia Questions of Romance 1. Why was the 4th finger of the hand chosen as the ring finger? 2. What is the difference between a gift and a present? 3. What are the meanings of difference color roses? 4. What does it mean when you put a stamp on an envelope upside-down? 1. Because it was believed that a vein in that finger was connected directly with the heart. 2. A gift is something the recipient wants. A present is something the giver wants the recipient to have. 3. Red=love; pink=friendship; yellow=respect 4. I love you Think Spring? On September 28, the WSVH Science classes put 50 pots with tulip bulbs in the cafeteria's refrigerator. In mid February, there will be blooming tulips in the classroom! The students will then take home a Valentine's Day blooming tulip.-fred Nesvold, LTE Science Teacher Volume 2 Issue 5 Page 3
4 WKCE Testing The Wisconsin Knowledge and Concepts Examination (WKCE) will be given to 8th and 10th graders from February 4th through February 22nd. For grades 8 and 10, the test include multiple-choice and short answer items in reading, language arts, math, science and social studies. A writing assessment based on an assigned topic is also included. The purpose of the test is to provide information of subject proficiency to students, parents and teachers. It also stands as a measure of accountability for schools and districts and determines the extent to which schools and districts across the state meet the Wisconsin proficiency standards. Please contact Shannon O Connor, Guidance Counselor, If you have any questions regarding the test. We had the honor of having former student, Bill Tredway, visit the school and talk to the students about Native American history and culture. Bill is currently working in Canada with the Ojibwa Indians. He teaches Braille and counsels Ojibwas, who are losing or have lost their vision. Bill speaks Ojibwa and is working to preserve aboriginal language, culture and artifacts. He graduated from Northland College with a degree in math, physics and Native American studies.-shannon O Connor, Guidance Counselor The first DLS Survivor Day was held at DLS Survivor Day WCBVI on January 30 th. This activity was designed to offer students the opportunity to participate in real life experiences within a twenty-four hour period. While staying in the on-campus apartment the students will be responsible for their personal hygiene and clothing care, using an alarm clock, preparing their meals, and housekeeping task. The second component is related to a work experience. The students will be expected to report to the vocational education area on time and complete the duties assigned to them. After lunch the students are encouraged to plan leisure/recreation activities. This free time allows the students to schedule a leisure activity such as a movie, bowling, shopping, etc. We are hoping that this will be the first DLS Survivor Day will become part of the DLS curriculum. It will prove to be a learning experience for both students and staff. The information collected may offer useful data to parents and school districts when planning for transition. If you have any questions, please contact Peggy Trainor at or Kate Mennenga at Page 4 The Eye Spy

6 NCASB Cheerleading Results The WSVH cheerleaders did a fine job representing our school at the NCASB Cheerleading competition this year, looking and sounding better than ever. They were full of pep and cheer at both the wrestling meet and the cheerleading competition. Out of seven teams competing for Outstanding Cheerleader, Chelsea Reilly tied for 4th! Way to go Chelsea! She did an outstanding job and was a great Outstanding Cheerleader. Out of 11 teams that competed in the Cheerleading team competition, WSVH placed 7th. Way to go Badgers! They really did an awesome job. Our competing cheerleading squad included Chelsea Reilly, Janine Balfe, Sarah Baebler, Renee Joye, Karrie Kinstetter, Misty Julian, Ronnie Washington, and Jason Songs. Thanks to Ronnie and Jason for their cool moves, doing the worm and some acrobatics to give our team that little extra pizzazz. Congratulations to the teamgood work!-michelle King, Co-Cheerleading Coach Swim team practice will begin on February 5th! Swim Team All girls and boys interested in joining the swim team should come to the initial practice on Monday, February 4th, from 4:00 to 5:15 in the gymnasium. Co-curricular rules will be handed out for those new to athletics this year. These rules spell out the Athletic Code, grade requirements and behavior expectations for all students participating in school sports. Once again we will have a competition team for 7th graders and older as well as the community team for younger students. The schedule for the local meets for the community team have not arranged yet, but I expect WSVH will compete at Delavan-Darien and Milton again this year. There will be four away meets this year and the home Wisconsin Relays. The away meets are March 1st and 2nd in Minnesota; March 8th and 9th in South Dakota; March 14th in Illinois; and the last meet is the NCASB conference tournament April 18th through 21st in Illinois. Our Wisconsin Relays are scheduled for April 12th and 13th here at WSVH. So mark your calendars and join the WSVH swim team.-diana Brower, Swim Coach Page 6 The Eye Spy
