Autumn Term Week 7 (Week A) Chariots of Fire at Brighton Prep School Sports Day! A bounty of photos! Sports Stars and Superstars! Congratulations you were AMAZING!
In Week 6, Year 6 pupils were out and about Abu Dhabi with their Arabic skills for both native Arabic speakers and non-native Arabic speakers. We start by riding the big bus and giving the work, the native pupils wrote their notes in order to write a trip report after the trip. The non-native Arabic speakers had a checklist of places they visited and added new vocabulary that they learned on the trip. The day started off by visiting Sheik Zayed Grand Mosque and share the information of Islamic culture. Then went to heritage Village where the pupils learn about the life in the UAE in the past. Finally, our last stop is back to school where everyone had a fantastic time. The children were well behaved and it was a fab day!
Humanities Year 6 Key Vocabulary Year 6 have been studying rivers and here are some keywords from the topic. Can your child define any of these words? How was your day? alternatives Are you often confronted with a response such as fine or good when you ask your children the question How was your day at school today? Research shows that asking open ended questions can keep the conversation going. If you ask a question that only requires a one word answer then chances are that is the response you will get. Also, keeping the tone of the question positive while avoiding the use of emotional words can give your child a chance to express concerns. Here are some questions to help stimulate your child into answering with more than just one word! What was the funniest thing that happened today? How would you rate your day on a scale of 1-10? Why? How did someone help you today? Who made you smile today? What did you find challenging today? How did you overcome the challenge? If you could choose, who would you like to sit by in class? (Who would you NOT want to sit by in class? Why?) How did you help someone today?
'The Brighton College Prep School Choir, consisting of selected pupils from Years 5 to 8, gave their first performance in the school reception area on Thursday morning. They sang the two part piece for two girls' voice parts, Just a Single Voice, words and music by Albrecht and Althouse and Mary Donnelly's two part song, I will Follow. The pupils held the two independent melody lines confidently and with superb intonation. Special mention should be made of our newly appointed Year 8 choir leaders, Helena Kelynack, Mia Robinson and Margaux Jacquemart.
Problem: A car has got to travel from one side of a canyon to another. The canyon is 40 cm wide. Rules Each table works together to solve the problems, and their first task is to think of a name for their construction company. Then, make a bridge large enough (and strong enough) for a car to travel from one side of the canyon to the other. They could use paper (60 AED a sheet), paperclips (18 AED for 4) and cellotape (60 AED for 10cm) to make their bridge. Each group had 600AED to spend. They had 40 minutes in which to create their bridges. Here are the pictures of the successful bridges.
This week, Year 3 have been putting our 7 Habits into practise through having our very first pupil led family conference. The children were all very proactive at showing their parents their books and talking through all their work. A lot of the children even demonstrated beginning with the end in mind by discussing their targets and the things they were wanting to improve. It was a wonderful success, the children were extremely proud of themselves and it was lovely to see them shine. On Monday the children in Year 3 thoroughly enjoyed themselves. We kick started the morning in our House rooms devouring a delicious breakfast snack and then before we knew it were on the field competing for our team in our Sports Day morning. We had great fun taking part in all the events and it was wonderful seeing so many parents there in support.

There were some amazing performances to behold this year from all age groups in the Sports Days. The sun was shining and Bithna were vying for glory! There were many good individual performances during each of the days and the team events such as the relays and tug of war meant that Bithna pupils pulled together to gain the points for success. Bithna did extremely well! In the Years 7 and 8 sports day we won the trophy coming 1 st. In the 3and 4 Sports Day we came 2 nd and in the Years 5 and 6 Sports Day we also came 2 nd which places us in a very strong position for winning the overall Sports Day crown which is announced in the next Whole School Assembly. Well done to all! Photos on next page

In anticipation of the Bithna House Fun Day which will be upon us at the end of term, I am asking if there are any Bithna parents who may be prepared to do some baking for that day in order to raise money for the House Fun Day. If so, please contact my self or Kate Khan our Bithna Parent representative. David Scott HMM
On Thursday, 11 th February, the Brighton College community came together for the Hosn Fun Day. As with previous House Fun Days before it and Bithna s to come the day was jampacked with fund-raising activities in aid of the Red Crescent. Pupils, parents and teachers all gave their time and resources so generously, and the results were outstanding: pupils did indeed have fun, and the extraordinary sum of 30,000 AED was raised! Thank you to everyone who donated their time, resources or money towards the cause without everyone s involvement and positivity, Hosn Fun Day wouldn t have been the roaring success that it was. Please enjoy the photographs that follow! Jennifer White HMM Hosn

The Hosn pupils all participated in the House Sports Days this week, and there were some fantastic performances from pupils all the ways from Year 3 right up until Year 8. It was particularly pleasing to see demonstrations of good sportsmanship and encouragement, and the growing House spirit in Hosn. Thank you to everyone who helped prepare banners, posters, pom-poms etc for the House parade it was a great sight to behold before the competition started. Before the sporting events commenced, pupils were treated to a House breakfast to fuel their activities, and focus their minds. Sadly, 2016 was not to be a winning year for Hosn, placing 4 th, 3 rd and 4 th across the three days. Hopefully, we can all raise our spirits soon, and start planning for next year! Please enjoy the photographs which follow.

What a yummy start to the day for Fujairah this week. We all enjoyed the breakfast snacks and they definitely gave us the fuel to enjoy Sports Day

What an exciting and enjoyable morning the children had competing in the Year 3 and 4 Sports Day. The children were organised into groups and were set off to race at different stations including field and track events. There was a great atmosphere surrounding the Fujairah House and the cheer was definitely the loudest!
Well done Years 7 and 8; you were super. If there had been an award for enthusiasm and effort I think that we would have won! An excellent example e to all and a fantastic start to our Sports Days!
Congratulations to Years 3 and 4. Overall winners! Yippee you were all AMAZING!
We came We saw We had a lot of fun! Well done Years 5 and 6 Team Fujairah!
Thank you to Will, Lucas and Bart who sent me a photo of them taking part in a rugby tournament in Doha last weekend. The boys had a fantastic time and reached the finals where they beat Doha 5-0. Well done to all involved! I am always very proud to be the House Mistress of Fujairah but this week all the children have been extra excellent. They have demonstrated superb sportsmanship win, lose or draw, and supported each other at all times. Well done to you all! Don t forget Fujairah, I love to hear what you have been up to so don t forget to me at rohalleron@brightoncollege.ae Rachael O Halleron HMM
Tara Browne (4 Danube) I received an this morning with details of an exciting opportunity that came Tara Browne s (4 Danube) way over the past week. Here is what her mother, Jane Browne had to say about Tara training with some sporting superstars: I thought I would send some photos of Tara training with Manchester City Women s Football Team and their sister club, Melbourne City Women s Football Team, who are both here as part of #cityontour for a friendly match. As Tara trains twice a week with Manchester City Football Schools, she was invited along to meet the players, do some training drills and play a few mini matches
We are so proud of her, as she puts up with a lot during regular training where there is only one other girl and sometimes she is the only girl and so has to work harder to prove she is just as good. Tara had a fantastic time and the players were a great sporting inspiration to all girls. Congratulations Tara; your hard work and dedication is inspiring and impressive. You look like a sporting legend in the making and we are so proud of you for representing all budding footballers, girls and Jahili so admirably well done! Danielle Facey Jahili HMM
I won a meet and greet with Rita Ora at Yas Mall a few weeks ago and just knowing that I was going to meet her got me through Exam Week with high hopes! When it came to Red Fest DXB, I was so excited to meet her, then the Red Fest team came to collect me. We walked behind the studio to see her standing there right in front of us. She was so pretty and kind; it was the best experience I ve ever had! Ava Stoddart 7 Jahili
When Kelly won a meet and greet with Fifth Harmony I was a little bit jealous at first, but I was head of heels with excitement when she said that she would take me with her! On the day Kelly and I were super excited to meet them, although we were a little disappointed not to be allowed to ask for their autographs or take selfies with them. Nonetheless, it was an amazing experience. The members of the band: Camilla, Dina, Ally, Lauren and Normani were all so kind and sweet. The rest of the festival was brilliant too I highly recommend it for next year! Melis Sezgin 7 Jahili
On Sunday, this year s House Breakfast began with Year 7 and 8 coming together to feast on bagels, muffins, croissants and fruit juice amidst a back drop uplifting beats to get them in the spirit for Sports Day. It was Year 3 and Year 4 s turn on Monday and I enjoyed spending some quality time with the youngest members of Jahili, swapping sporting stories and discussing House Shout tactics! By Tuesday, Years 5 and 6 were keen for their turn for breakfast treats in the House Room. The time that we spent together was the perfect opportunity to hear about one another s Half Term adventures and to get excited about the rest of the day ahead! Danielle Facey Jahili HMM
A very special thank you to: Ava Stoddart, Femke Van Der Hem and Amala Ayyar (all from 7 Jahili), for putting their creative skills to fantastic use over the past weekend and creating two stunning new banners for Jahili, which were unveiled during the Year 7 and 8 House Breakfast - now that s what I call team spirit! Danielle Facey Jahili HMM

In Year 5, William Croft unveiled his contribution to the growing store of Jahili decorations with his striking black and yellow banner, which he carried, with pride, alongside Jake Campbell (5 Namib). Both boys lead the Jahili parade of the pitch, at the start of Sports Day, which undoubtedly contributed to Year 5 and 6 s incredible sporting performances later that morning! Thank you Will (and mum!) for your efforts. Danielle Facey Jahili HMM

On Monday the College field resembled an Olympic stadium as athletes from Years 3 and 4 competed for the illustrious Sports Day House cup. Not since the days of the ancient Greeks had there been a gathering of so many talented athletes! The team work and competitive spirit was fantastic to behold and it was one of the best sports day we have had since the opening of the school. Well done to Fujarah who won the day overall. In our eyes, however, the pupils are all winners. We would also like to say a huge thank you to the PE department for organising such a fun day and also to the parents for your fantastic support; it never goes unnoticed. Marc Evans Year 4 Teacher and Deputy HMM
Years 5 and 6 stole the show on Tuesday, coming first place over all out of all of the Houses well done everyone! Most importantly though, everyone had lots of fun participating and supporting one another throughout the morning.

Last weekend, William O Sullivan (5 Etna), Lucas Wood (5 Etna), Bartolome Urda (5 Etna), Johnathan Walster (5 Pacific) and I competed in the Doha Rugby Festival Firstly we lost against the Bahrain team, but recovered quickly by beating Doha 3. Next we drew against Doha 1 before reaching the final beating Doha 2, 5 tries - nil to win the bowl. William Croft 5 Sahara

The Parents Broadsheet News and Views Week 8 (Week B) Spring Term 2016 This week has seen not one, but three sports extravaganzas take place on our College field. It was fabulous to see all of our children take part in a range of exciting, challenging and fun activities. The atmosphere was fabulous with everyone enjoying themselves and the competitive spirit of doing your best for your House came through on the tack, across the field and from all the spectators. Well done to everyone! Thank you so much to all the parents who joined us and of course, a huge thank you to Mr Deegan and the PE team who all did a truly fantastic job of planning and running three super days.
