1 Volume 25, Issue #4 March April 2016 Official Publication for Gateway Chapter of American Needlepoint Guild Needlenotes CHAPTER MEETINGS Monthly meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month from September through May in the South Fellowship Hall at the Ladue Chapel. Morning monthly meetings begin at 9:30 am. Evening monthly meetings begin at 6:30 pm. Summer meetings are informal stitch-ins and are held on a Saturday each month from June through August. CALENDAR OF EVENTS Thursday, March 17 Morning and Evening Meeting Collecting for Philanthropy Project Sunday, April 10 Retreat at The Sign of the Arrow Thursday, April 21 Morning and Evening Meeting October 4-6 ANG Stich Away President s Letter, March 2016 Dear Members, As we move into March and April, spring is right around the corner! Although the winter months give us plenty of opportunity to hunker down and stitch, I think we are ready for spring! My brightly colored floral projects are just begging to come out and be worked on! Spring also brings the election of new officers. Janice Marsh has graciously volunteered to chair our nominating committee. Janice needs some additional people to fill the membersat-large positions on the nominating committee. Please seriously consider joining this committee. The positions that have yet to be filled for terms beginning this May are: Public Relations and Programs (1 st Vice President). Please think about volunteering to take one of these positions. The strength of our group lies in its members, and neither of these offices is too difficult. We have many willing to help you! We hope that you are enjoying the Brenda Hart project. It is a challenging project, but lots of fun! It is interesting to learn different stitches, choose threads and beads, and position the colors to present the best effect. And the compensation will keep you on your toes! In the end we will have a versatile piece of needlepoint, which can be made into a picture, frameweight, zippered bag, or another innovative item. Thank you, Jan Poneta, for all of your work on our Terry Dryden workshop. It is always fun and educational to have a national teacher come to our chapter. There are so many new things to learn and new ways to stitch, we can always benefit from a different perspective! Please mark April 10 th on your calendars it is our stitch retreat at the Sign of the Arrow. This is always such a fun event. More information about this will be coming at a later date. Your board is always open to suggestions for workshops and programs. Please let us know if there is something you are interested to learn or a project you would like to try. Keep stitching! 3 Packing for Vacation Everyone should go on vacation yearly! It s a wonderful refresher from the day to day routine. In addition, vacations should be constructed to allow, dare I say, encourage stitching. With that in mind here are a few insights from my recent cruise to the Wester Caribbean with Mary Carol Kluesner. Of course the overall success of any vacation revolves around a good itinerary and excellent packing. Bear in mind, if you are flying, yes, size does matter, and liquids include creams enough said. It is my personal belief that I should be able to survive as well as, takeover peacefully any country brave or dumb enough to permit me entry. Usually this is all packed in my carry on wheels necessary and my purse wheels beneficial Because I didn t go on many vacations as a child, it is necessary to pack my purse as an activity bag. Those of you with small children or just a reminder, always have something for the child to do. In my case, yes, that is Needlepoint! Usually, todays transportation, has no room for a stand. It is necessary to be able to work the piece in your hand, doing only basketweave stitches. Depending on where you are going you might not be able to run by a shop for something you forgot. Plus if you fly, watch out for the dangerous articles TSA is always on the ready to confiscate. Here s a suggested list: Scissors NOT your good ones, just something that will chew through threads Needles/ threaders plenty. They love to jump off canvases and stay in couches or seats Light bulbs 100 watts. To replace the 40-60w bulbs in rentals and hotels. Threads/plastic zip bags plenty. Also make sure you have a variety of colors in case you change your mind Projects plenty. Starting out on an optimistic note will play throughout the entire vacation. Really, you ARE doing this for the family! Think of how you would feel if you ran out of projects. Enough said. A small tray to put your stuff in while you are stitching. Those little leather button up trays work wonderfully. They keep you from wasting time looking for everything. Usually, this all starts with a trip or two to your favorite needlepoint store. No matter how much stash we have you will probably find the following projects are too large, don t want to just do basketweave, could do gifts for the holiday, etc. Really any excuse will do. Just remember, it s always better to have too much than not enough!!! AND, the luggage store carries squishy bags (these are bags squish out the air perfect for underwear and extra needlepoint ) so that you can fit more stuff in your suitcase!!!. Oh - PS Mary Carol suggest you always take a little duct tape with you you just never know when you might need it! Enjoy!! Linda Maximizing your stitching time while on vacation Here are a few suggestions on how to incorporate as much time as possible stitching. Try to get up before anyone else. On my trip, I would have room service deliver my breakfast tray (usually a really cute, tall, foreign steward would bring it, while Mary Carol slept Quietly, I would pour my coffee, eat my scrumptious breakfast and try not to cuss when I stub my toe tripping out the door to the balcony. Immediately after eating I would start stitching it s not necessary to be done with your coffee just be careful! Sometimes I would stitch outside on the balcony note if on a ship be sure to weigh down your stuff - the captain will not do a man overboard drill to get your threads back! If you are lucky enough to take a cruise, they usually have free small needlepoint projects to do. Just remember, you have to get there early to get the best selection. Try not to be too aggressive, keep your elbows close to your side these women WILL remember you. But, it s a great place to meet interesting women, who really think you are A BIG DEAL, when you ask if they belong the American Needlepoint Guild. The activities director showed how you can split the Gateway Chapter American Needlepoint Guild, March - April, Page 3

4 threads in 3 equal parts and braid them to help keep them together. When you want a color just pull it from the end. Pretty good idea, especially with a small project, where all the threads are included. Now you have one more project! The universe DOES support needlepoint! For those of you who usually do LARGE count canvases this is a real VACATION. It s restful, AND productive. Now if you are traveling with a fellow stitcher, like me, this MAY result in a bit of competition. To ensure you stay in the lead, NOT that this IS a competition, always have one of the many projects in your purse! So when you are at the pool, being driven somewhere, or are having cocktails, you can throw in a few stitches! DON T pull it out if you are the driver even on a red light. That s just wrong and could result in a ticket. Not to mention your fellow stitches may think you are a bit obsessive As for me, I had a great time! I did not bring my stitching into the jungle (too humid and the light was not good enough), but did manage to finish the scissor case, and almost finished the checkbook cover I brought. Plus, I will always remember the trip, the great food, and the wonderful time with my friend, when I look at these cute additions to my collection. Hope you find these suggestions helpful on YOUR next Vacation. Till next time Enjoy!! Linda Lesh Gateway Chapter American Needlepoint Guild, March - April, Page 4
