Thank you to all Fair Board members, Leaders, parents, 4- H/FFA Members and Supporters who helped make the 2017Las Animas County Fair a success. It truly was a great fair! Congratulations-Dean! On August 31, Dean will be retiring from Extension in Las Animas County. He has worked in our county for the last 16 years. His leadership and dedication to 4-H and the fair board will be greatly missed. Best Wishes! 2 Page Deadline: September 15 Career Summary and Secretary Books Record Books The Livestock Record Books will be graded on a complete/incomplete system and will be done on the club level. However, if a record book is determined to be incomplete, the 4-H member will have 10 days after he/she is notified to complete the record book. If he/she does not complete the record book, they will not be eligible to re-enroll in that project for the H year. County Record Book Awards If a 4-H member wishes to compete for the Farm Credit Awards call your leader and have them submitted for this competition. Record Books must be turned into the office by September 30. Judging will be done outside the county. For new members -Farm Credit Awards are given to the top six Record Books in the county. Winners receive $50 cash. County Fair Exhibits- PLEASE COME AND GET THEM!!! I will keep them until October 1 after that date they will be recycled. State Fair Exhibits Your projects from the State Fair will be at the fairgrounds on Tuesday, Sept 5 from 4:30 6:00 p.m. Please try and pick them during this time. SALE COMMISSION For those of you who sold animals in the consignment Market Sale at fair here is an explanation of why the Fair Board charges a sale commission and what that expense covers. The Fair Board charges a 4% sale commission to cover all cost associated with the market sale which includes: the buyers BBQ tickets, all advertising before and after the sale, liability insurance, postage, buyers appreciation gifts, office supplies, printing cost and, a portion of the costs of the fair not covered in the appropriation from the county budget. The fair board also covers the cost when a buyer/add-on buyer doesn't fulfill their obligation. 4 Page 4 Congratulations to 2017 Colorado State Fair Participants! Congratulations to everyone who represented Las Animas County at the Colorado State Fair! We had a very successful year! These members will also competed at various shows and contests though out the State Fair. Enrollment materials will be given to the Organizational Leaders around the middle of October. Enrollments will once again be handled on 4H Online! Deadline The enrollment deadline is Friday, December 15. Re-enrollments received after the deadline will be assessed a $10 late fee, per member. This fee doesn t apply to leaders and new members. FEES The county enrollment fees are $25 per member plus literature. Cloverbuds(5-7 as of December 31, 2017) are $20 plus literature. LITERATURE Manuals will be ordered after our office has received payment. ALL FEES MUST BE TURNED INTO YOUR LEADER PRIOR TO THE DEADLINE!

5 Well, here it is the last newsletter I ll have the pleasure of working on. This comes as a bittersweet moment, more about that later. First off though, I think it s important for me to thank you for a GREAT fair this year! We went into this fair knowing that there would be a lot of challenges due to the change in the schedule. I ll be honest with you, I was skeptical about how all of that would work; I was overwhelmed by the amount of help we had and how quickly things got done THANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH!!! I was also very pleased with the quality of the exhibits, Exhibit Day and livestock. I feel like the quality over the whole fair was the best in recent memory; and yes, I ll admit sometimes recent memory might mean yesterday (if I m lucky) J, but when it comes to fairs my memory is pretty good. I also want to commend y all on making Lorri and my lives easier this year. Everyone seemed to be happy to be at the fair and that carried over into the general attitude of everyone this year. We didn t hear any bickering, or complaining; nor did we have any big controversies that we needed to take care of. I think I saw more smiles this year! That s what makes fairs fun! I would also like to thank Fair Board for their hard work and leadership this year! They all took it upon themselves to get things going when it came to putting up and tearing down show rings, getting shows started and keeping them flowing. There is a lot of work that goes on throughout the year, most of it behind the scenes, and quite a few decisions they agonize over because they know those decisions affect you. You all need to thank them also!! Now to the bittersweet moment It s really no big secret that retirement has been on my mind for a little while. I had planned on getting through this fair; see how I felt about completing the year and, if circumstances warranted, reassessing things again at the end of Well that didn t quite work out the way I wished it had. That s ok though. While I m very much going to miss working with everyone, from Lorri to Fair Board to all of you, I ve also come to the point where I m looking forward to whatever comes next. And, no, I don t really know what comes next because I haven t worried about planning beyond August 31. I ve figured that would all work itself out. I ve truly enjoyed my 20 years with Extension and my 16 years in Las Animas County. It s been an honor to watch kids grow in this program; I ve had the pleasure of seeing young members who are very apprehensive about working with an animal, grow and become competent and confident showmen in just one 4-H year. I ve had the very distinct honor, because I ve been around for a while, of watching young members grow in their leadership skills to the point where they are recognized, by their peers, to be leaders at the state level. I ve been blessed to see members grow and develop skills within their projects that I wish I had developed. Those pleasures and memories are mine because you have allowed me to work with you and your kids Thank you! For better or worse I m not going too far away and will be available to help when and where needed. If something comes up that I might be able to help you with, don t be afraid to give me a call. Who knows, I might be found hanging around during the 2018 fair. So..Thank you for allowing me to get to know you, work with you and be a part of your successes! Dean
