5 Sports: Mr Sanderson s January Round-Up A positive attitude causes a chain reaction of positive thoughts, events and outcomes. It is a catalyst and it sparks extraordinary results - Wade Boggs A jam-packed month of fixtures and events with some stunning success across a range of sports. This once again underlines our status as a school that offers an amazing variety of sport for the pupils to take part in! As always, our pupils are not only achieving success on the field but they continue to represent the school in a good light, with their positive attitudes and respectful behaviour. Long may this continue! Football 4 boys from Truro School have been selected to represent the South West U13 squad this season. They are Freddie I, Ben W, Flyn M and Sam H. Congratulations boys and we know you will represent the school well. Meila F (picture below) has been selected to play for Cornwall girls U14 football team. This is a fantastic achievement as she is currently 12. Well done to Meila and we hope this is the start of many Truro school girls to represent the county! The U14 girls team progressed to the next round of the county cup with a thrilling penalty shoot-out victory against Penair. It was 1-1 after full time and the girls triumphed after Lexi C saved a penalty and Meila F slotted home the winning spot kick! Rugby The U16s boys rugby team were crowned county champions after defeating Penryn College in the final at St Austell rugby club (picture above). This fantastic achievement caps off a wonderful season in which the U16 team went unbeaten. They have already won the county 10 s tournament and have now set their sights on the 7 s county title. They have also now completed a remarkable run in which this year group have won the county championship at every age group - This is only the 3rd time this has happened in Truro School history! Congratulations to Callum P and Alfie B represented the Irish Exiles against the England Lambs. They have again been selected to face the Welsh team this weekend. The county U18 team has been selected and Truro are being represented by: Billy B, Callum P, Alfie B, Toby H
6 The following have been selected for the Cornwall County U16 team: Josh A, Will B, Dan S, Matt P (picture below) Alfie O and Hugo P have been selected for the county B side. Netball All six netball teams travelled to Shebbear for a triangular fixture against Shebbear and West Buckland on Saturday. It was a fantastic fixture, the weather held off and all teams performed well. A special mention for the U15 team who played their best netball to date, defeating Shebbear 23-7 and suffering a narrow loss to a strong West Buckland side. The girls really worked well together. At half time against West Buckland the U16s without four players, including International and captain Rosie B, were losing, but with a change to the team and some more determined play won 38-28, maintaining their unbeaten record this year. Congratulations to the U13s and U14s who won all of their matches. Other results: U12 vs Shebbear lost 5-10, vs West Buckland drew 9 all U13 vs Shebbear won 17-1, vs West Buckland won U14 vs Shebbear won 26-21, vs West Buckland won U18 vs Shebbear won 32-7, vs West Buckland lost Good luck to the U16 netball squad who are travelling to Bournemouth to represent Cornwall in the Regional Schools netball finals. Congratulations to Rosie B (picture above) who has been selected to represent England U17 s in the European Championships that will take place in Dublin in March. Good luck Rosie and we are all very proud of you! Cross Country Cornwall County Cross Country Championships 2019 The Minor Girls team of Evie M (29th), Hebe C (32nd) Eva B (38th) and Neve S-F (41st) all ran well in their first County Championships. The Minor Boys team of came 2nd in the team events with great runs from Archie M (3rd) Henry S (8th) Finn C (10th) and Stan W (27th) with Archie, Henry and Finn being selected for Cornwall to run in the Southwest Championships. In the Junior Girls race, unfortunately Amiee B pulled up with a hamstring injury but there were good runs from Anna E (7th) and Meila F (26th) and Anna has been selected for Cornwall.
7 The junior boys were also hit by injury but Ted P (8th) ran very well along with Jack M (17th) and Ted has been selected for Cornwall. The Inter girls were represented by Izzie L who ran superbly finishing 2nd but cannot run for Cornwall as she has a swimming competition that day. The Inter Boys were placed 1st as a team after strong performances from Isaac M (2nd) Benji M (3rd) and Ben T (8th) and all boys have been selected for Cornwall. In the Senior boys race we were again placed 1st as a team with Finn B (1st) making it 6 wins out or 7 in the County Schools championships since starting school in the 1st year. Harris M (2nd) and Alexander M (6th) also ran well and have been selected for the Cornwall team. 11 pupils from Truro School will represent Cornwall at the Southwest Championships on Saturday 2nd February at Bath Racecourse. Finn Birnie has been selected to run for the England U20's team which will be competing in Belgium. An incredible achievement and we wish him good luck! Fencing This weekend our Under 17s moved on to Meylan, France for the next of the international circuit events. In action this week were: Roman N (FRA), Jack W (HKG), Darcy H (GBR) and Max C (GBR). Jack W and Max C had a difficult start to the morning each claiming 1 and 2 victories in the pooles respectively. This left them with an uphill task and a difficult seeding towards the bottom third of the draw. Max was defeated in the last 128 to finish 81st, and Jack lost 15-6 to take 100th place. After a superb start in the pooles winning 5 fights and losing his sixth in a narrow defeat 5-4, Roman N stormed to the top end of the leader board taking the 10th seeding going into the direct elimination. Unfortunately, he lost in the last 32 in the narrowest of margins 15-14, to finish in 17th place. Darcy Holdsworth made difficult work of the morning taking 2 victories in the pooles and giving him a seeding of 75th going into the direct elimination rounds. However, he regrouped and stormed through the draw with an all or nothing attitude. He beat the 54th seed 15-8 in the last 128, knocked out the 11th seed with an impressive 15-3 victory in the last 64, took out the 22nd seed in the last but finally in the last 8 he was defeated, again by the narrowest of margins 15-14, by the eventual finalists. He finished in an excellent 8th place; a fantastic weekend of international competition. Surfing Tegan B (picture below) has been selected for the U16 England surfing development squad for the second year running, despite being in the 3rd year! It shows an incredible level of commitment of level of skill and we are hoping Tegan can continue her success!
8 Hockey U16 girls were runners up in the county indoor tournament, losing to Truro High School in the final. Well done to the girls for making the final and for your excellent standards throughout the tournament. The U13 boys lost a tight game to a very strong Blundells in the national cup. In a well contested game, Blundells scored the winning goal in the final 3 minutes. With such a dedicated group of boys, there is no doubt that they will have a successful hockey season this year. Badminton Playing up an age group, Joanna V won the U15 girls singles competition in the silver class, which was held in Warwickshire. Joanna then teamed up with Ollie B to take home a silver in the mixed doubles. Congratulations to both! Mr D Sanderson, Director of Sport Boys Blazer Exchange At the beginning of the Autumn Term it was necessary for some boys' blazers to be lined with an alternative lining due to a manufacturing shortage beyond our control. Parents would have received a letter at the time of purchase from Jane Grigg, Director of Admissions, to explain the problem with supply of the correct blazer lining. The correct stock is now available and the Uniform Shop are in the process of contacting parents to arrange the exchange of blazers. If you have not already done so, please arrange to visit the Uniform Shop to replace your Son's blazer with a new one. Boys at the Senior School site may visit the shop themselves before or after school hours to carry out the exchange. Please ensure you/your son bring the "striped lining" blazer along as these need to be returned to the supplier. The shop is open Monday 8am - 12noon, Wednesday 1pm - 6pm and Friday 8am - 11am Army Liaison Officer 4 th 6 th Form: The Army Liaison Officer is coming on Tuesday 29 January, and RAF on Thursday 31 January. Please Mrs Shaw jms@truroschool.com if you would like to find out about careers in the armed forces. Cornwall Music Festival Trophies If you won a trophy in last year s festival (including verse-speaking classes) please bring them back (clean, polished and engraved) into school by 1 st February.
