Penair Headteacher: Mr. J Davidson Day of Difference Today we had our annual Day of Difference in Humanities for the 6th year running. The day challenges students on the assumptions they make about individuals, teaching them that acting on assumptions can lead to prejudice and discrimination. The Year 9 s do role play in the morning and meet visitors from all walks of life in the afternoon to interview them about their experiences. The day is run by the Barbican Theatre and always has a huge impact on both students and staff. Mrs Butler says... The internet holds endless positive opportunities for education, social interaction and creativity. Please use it safely and responsibly. REMEMBER: Think about what you are doing and stay safe! ALWAYS report anything you are worried about. penairschooltruro February 10th 2017
Non-Uniform and Cake Sale for Reel Heroes On 3rd Feb we had non-school uniform and a cake sale to raise money towards materials for our Reel Heroes club. Mrs Cartmill runs the club which makes wall hangings for Little Harbour and medicine bags for hospital patients to make their problems seem a little less impossible to overcome and to brighten their days. The non uniform collection continues to be counted but the cake sale raised Well done team! Year 9 Taster Sessions Last week our Year 9 s had a taste of their option choices to get a feel of what they could be doing next year. Students were hands on and enthusiastic about their classes and (despite the dreary weather) there was a real buzz around the school! Last Wednesday staff took a group of our Year 9 s to visit Truro and Penwith College for some course taster sessions. Students can choose to take a vocational option for their GCSE s next year, therefore the morning was a great opportunity to learn more about the courses they have expressed an interest in to better inform their decision. Students learned exactly what would be expected from them in college and were given a breakdown of what their specific course entails. Well done to all of the students for their enthusiasm and impeccable behaviour. It was a very enjoyable morning for allhere s a few pictures from the hair and beauty practical taster where students experimented with styles to finish off the session.
Cooking to Impress Last Thursday and Friday our catering students were cooking to impress for their exams. The kitchens look extremely colourful with beautifully presented dishes and the smell was wafting down the school corridors all day making everyone feel very hungry! Mr Powley commented; The standard of the food produced was of a very high level. I have been to the South Facebook News! Tymek in Year 8 has been receiving a lot of attention on Facebook with his Penair Lion drawing. We wanted to show the fascinating process he goes through when drawing freehand. It s very therapeutic to watch! It took Tymek less than 2 lessons to draw the work of art. Well done Tymek and keep drawing! Ex Student Tim Parker on BBC Inside Out We were pleased to see Tim Parker is still surprising us all at the Exeter Mathematics school as he taught Inside Out s presenter some maths tricks. We shared Radio Cornwall s post on our FB page- have a watch! West regional finals of a national competition called future chef 3 times now. I would say that many of the menus served were of this caliber and I couldn t be prouder of the work that the students produced. Some of the dishes contained two or three high skill dishes and the students really pushed themselves to get to the upper echelons of greatness!
Roseland Combined Art Trip Yesterday four of our students went along to The Roseland School for the day on a combined Arts trip. Students practiced monoprinting and laser cutting and finishing off their work on the screen. The end results were brilliant and the students said that they thoroughly e n j o y e d the day. Sports Results Hockey KS4 League matches this half term. Penair beat Mullion 5-0 Penair beat Penair 3-0 Penair lost to Truro High School 0-3 U15 NetballPenair finished 10th out of 22. This was a great result in some horrible weather conditions. Round onepenair beat Humphry Davey, Redruth, Liskeard, Newquay Tretherras and lost to Truro School in our last game. Round twopenair beat Mounts Bay, drew with Truro High School and lost to Brannel and Richard Lander. Sensational Soaps! Last week our Nurture Group were busy in the Bywva Centre getting creative and making their own soaps! The Foam, Sweet Foam Bywva Centre brand has been a hit with staff and students! Good enough to go on the shelves- they smelt absolutely divine!
U16 Netball Regionals On Friday 27th January our U14 and U16 girls netball teams travelled to Wiltshire for the South West Regional Netball Tournament. The tournament took place at Marlborough College with our girls playing 6 games against some very tough opposition. Both of our teams played extremely well throughout the tournament and should be very proud of themselves for being getting through to this stage. U16 Team: Emily Kent, Maisy Hill, Emily Edwards, Shannon Rowland, Jodie Nightgale, Betsy Harpur, Izzy Clarke, Evey Phillips, Charlotte Pearne (Captain) and Paris Simpson. U13 A team county hockey tournament report by Ayana Mills (A team captain) and Jasmine Williams. Our first match was against Treviglas. It was a positive start to the tournament and by half time we were already winning 4-0. In the second half we continued to pass the ball well and saw some excellent dribbling from Choire Lister, Ayana Mills and Cara Lean. Ayana Mills completed her hatrick leading to an end result of Our next game was Truro High School. They were a skillful team which had our defense working very hard. Some excellent tackles were made by Anna Skuse, Jasmine Williams and Olivia May, but the High School managed to get 3 ahead. With some good team work we managed to put their defense under pressure and scored 1 goal. At full time the score 3-1 to the High School but we kept our heads high and focused on the next game. Our penultimate game was against Mounts Bay, one we were determined to win as we wanted to reach the quarter finals. We tried a few people in different positions and this resulted in a few strong attacks down the wing. We managed to win 2-0 which we were thrilled about. Now with the tournament in full swing, the pool stages were nearly over and we had one match left to play, one that would determine whether we would reach the quarter finals. We played Helston knowing it would be tough but we needed to come away with a win. It was an exciting start and by half time we were 2-0 ahead. In the second half everyone worked hard and we managed to extend our lead thanks to some excellent skills from Robyn Ivall and Amal Toumia. The final score was 4-0 to us which meant we were through the the quarter finals! We were excited and nervous to participate in the quarter finals against Richard Lander. It was 15 minutes one way so we had one chance. Robyn Ivall, Ayana Mills, Cara Lean and Choire Lister worked tirelessly to get the ball down our attacking end but we couldn t get the ball in the D to get a shot on goal. Anna Skuse and Olivia May put the Richard Lander attackers under lots of pressure and after numerous excellent saves from Siri Wells the score stayed at 0-0 after full time. U14 Hockey Tournament We had to do 5 minutes extra time and everyone was tired. Richard Lander fought hard and with 30 seconds left on the clock they managed to score with a powerful shot into the back board. Unfortunately we did not get through to the semi finals but we all played extremely well as a team and remained positive all day. A team : Ayana Mills (C) Choire Lister, Jasmine Williams, Cara Lean, Amal Toumia, Robyn Ivall, Anna Skuse, Siri Wells (GK), Olivia May B Team : Daisy Richards (C), Libby Holmes, Lottie Hosking, Lucy Edwards, Ryleigh Edwards, Kayna Bland, Scarlett Marsden, Carys Heffer
