Someone like Hiko, an Ethiopian smallholder farmer. Hiko is in the early days of her Send a Cow training which will help her family become independent. But so far this year she has lost one harvest to drought and one to flooding. Losing a harvest can be devastating. Hiko told Send a Cow: 'When my crops perished I felt so sad and hopeless again'. Our generous giving at harvest, when we thank God for generosity in creation, can restore hope to Hiko and to others. With our support Send a Cow can teach Hiko how to weather the storms of climate change, and give her a harvest that lasts for life. This will include: - Building protected growing areas such as keyhole gardens and raised beds - Giving her livestock that will provide manure, food and income - Teaching her how to harvest rainwater. Your support this harvest can help Hiko and the other families in her community who are working with Send a Cow. Full details of our harvest festivals in the parish and of our guest preachers are listed elsewhere in the magazine and on the website. We look forward to welcoming you to our harvest celebrations. 5 October 10.30am 12 October 10.30am 19 October 10.30am 26 October 10.30am All Welcome Hiko working on her farm. 5 Gardeners Corner October 2016 By Alistair Peak PGS I m so lucky being in touch with nature every day. It s wonderful to see plants grow as the old adage from tiny acorns grow great oaks. The last of the hedgerow and garden fruits i.e. Chestnuts, Sloes, Pears and Apples bring an end to harvest. As you only have four weeks to make the most of daylight before the clocks change (go back), enjoy the wonderful colours that this time of year brings both in the garden and in the countryside around us. Due to the good hot summer we had, there should have been a good build up of sugar in the plants and this should result in a spectacular colour display as the leaves change ready to fall, especially in wooded areas. At this time, if you have water features it might be a good idea to cover them with netting to prevent falling leaves silting them up. If you have pumps in your water features it s a good idea to flush them out and clean the filters, giving the motor a longer life. Now that it s time for the seasonal tidy up remember our wild life (even if they do bring in seeds that produce unexpected plants) and leave some seed heads. Leave some twigs, leaves and logs to encourage hedgehogs and frogs, who in turn will help keep some of the pests away, this doesn t have to be a big area. As your vegetable plots become vacant it is a good idea before they get too wet with the winter weather to dig them over rough, leaving the winter weather to break the soil down. Remember in your crop rotation to add organic matter for top growing vegetables but not for root vegetables, this will help the soil become ready for spring planting. Alistairs Tip: When digging over the soil, don t try and do it all in one go, little and often is best and avoids battering your body! Like any other athlete warm up first. DRAYTON NEWS Major building works have been taking place at St James Church, Drayton and we look forward to resuming normal worship at the beginning of October. WJBC GREAT EASTON PARISH COUNCIL Thank you to all those who help to keep our village flower beds, hedges and verges maintained with particular thanks to Phil Johnson for his continued assistance. The Parish Council web site is now up and running and this will be our primary method of communicating village information in the future. This is an impressive piece of work, completed under pressure, and is a major asset to the village so many thanks to Lucy Walsh, Andy Murdock and Tim Smith. The new web site is still under construction but organisations are encouraged to think about how they would like to be represented on the site which can be found at It is with regret that villagers are being barred from their much loved walk along the old railway track. The PC is pursuing all lines of enquiry to negotiate re-opening this walk. Our thanks are extended to Lucy McKay for volunteering to head the installation of a defibrillator in the village, we are confident that she will gain full support throughout the community for this venture. NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN The Neighbourhood Plan is now in it's consultation phase until 14 th October and everyone is encouraged to submit their remarks and observations. 13 Great Easton & District WI Julie Hill has been treading the boards of several Kettering Amateur Dramatic groups since she was a child, when she appeared in 'The King and I'. She told us in detail of the processes involved in putting on a show and of the help that was available, both locally and nationally in providing scenery and costumes. The cost of staging a production is great and therefore it is most important that the show is only being performed by one company at any one time in the same region. Julie showed us several accessories that she had worn and we tried to identify in which shows she had worn them. At our next meeting Dr Jenni Levine, our local Tai Chi instructor will be talking to us about 'Mindfulness, Energy and Tai Chi' If you are thinking of joining a Tai Chi group, then you are welcome to come along and experience, at first hand, what it is all about. Our meeting is on Wednesday 5 th October in the Village Hall at 7.30 pm. We would be delighted if you could join us. Parish News Our thoughts and prayers go to all the families and friends concerned. 15 THEFT FROM ST GILES CHURCH, MEDBOURNE Sometime during the day on Monday the 20 th June, the offertory box was prised from the wall and stolen from St Giles. It is a sad reflection on our society that there are rogues about who are prepared to lower themselves to the extent of stealing small sums of money from the Church whose members do so much to assist the poor and needy around the world. ST. GILES CHURCH, MEDBOURNE BRIDGE DRIVE IN AID OF ST GILES CHURCH FABRIC FUND Whilst it is always easy to close the door after the horse has bolted, it does remind us all to remember to empty our offertory boxes on a regular basis. In an effort to discourage such theft, it may also be worth recording the date that this is done on a notice alongside the box. If by any chance anyone happened to see somebody, probably a workman, loitering near the church that day, perhaps carrying a crow-bar or large hammer, could they please get in touch with me. Martin van Oppen - Churchwarden Medbourne Defibrillator Update September As we hope you are all aware the 2 defibrillators are now installed in the village one at the Sports Club and one at the Village Hall. New signs have now been put up around the village to alert everyone as to their location. We are running a third First Aid Training session, paid for from the funds, on Sunday October 23 rd at the Village Hall from There are 12 places available in total and anyone wishing to take part should ring David Tyler on Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis. Finally we would like to draw your attention to the fact that as the Parish Council does not have the legal power to ring fence the remaining funds, the Defibrillator Committee has decided to continue to hold the remaining funds. These funds will be used for future first aid training and future costs relating to the Defibrillator located at the Village Hall. We would like to offer our thanks to the Parish Council for looking into this matter on our behalf.
