It s a popular means of playing music, and in particular, a means of discovering new music, or at least music which is new to the listener. In my hands, the hands of one with seriously eclectic taste for whom music is a life-long habit, it can prove distracting and compulsive. The urge to keep on looking can become all-consuming. I listen a lot as I work. A glance at my listening in the past month reveals the Masses of William Byrd (there are always some constants). But I also stumbled on something completely new to me: Kendrick Lamar s last album in all its head-spinning glory. And in this process of discovery, one of both seeking and longing, I can find buried composers and artists I had lost or disremembered: recently it was Korngold s Sonnett fὒr Wien, Joe Walsh s But Seriously, Folks and Chris Squire s long-forgotten prog-rock treasure Fish out of Water which I had not heard in some thirty years. As a fervent Spotify seeker I can vouch for moments of pure delight of discovery and recovery: finding the motets of Roman composer Alessandro Melani ( ), whose sacred music is still virtually unknown. Upon my bed at night I sought him whom my soul loves; I sought him, but found him not; I called him, but he gave no answer. I will rise now and go about the city, In the streets and in the squares; I will seek him whom my soul loves. (Song of Songs 3:1, 2) Fervent longing and eager seeking are characteristics of the passage above which comes from the Song of Songs. Those themes cross over into the New Testament in two of Jesus s parables which are commonly known as The Parable of the Lost Sheep and The Parable of the Lost Coin. Actually, both are deserving of better titles, since they are both really about longing and seeking rather than about being lost. The point of both is that they are meant to present the idea of a God, who even more passionate than an enthused Spotify searcher, cannot stop looking and longing and searching; a God who is so engaged with his creation that he never gives up on it. In a sermon at Guildford Cathedral Andrew Bishop (no relation!) said of these two parables that they: lead us deep into the heart of God, a heart yearning passionately for you, for me in which each of us will find healing and true fulfilment. This is not a clasping, grasping love or manipulative desire: it is love beyond control. It is a love that allows us, like the sheep, to wander and stray or, like the coin, to hide away. But it is also a love that seeks In popular parlance, we might speak disparagingly of someone who has found God. The Judaeo-Christian tradition has at its heart a God who finds us in the most surprising ways and places. 30 3

5 Gardeners Corner March 2016 By Alistair Peak PGS When putting pen to paper or tapping the keyboard; once you mention the weather you can guarantee that the weather will do the opposite to what you have said. Having had a cold spell, some frost, lots of wind, together with a fair drop of rain, I believe we would have had most types of weather this winter. Oh, I forgot even a little snow and some sunshine to finish it off. Let s hope it may have killed of a few bugs!!! Pruning of shrubs that flower on this years wood requires to be done at this time of year they include Hardy Fuchsia, Caryopteris (Blue Spiraea), Perovskia (Russian Sage) and Buddleia Davidii,. Buddleias can normally be pruned back to a framework, if you do not prune them they will just get bigger and can become giants and even an unsightly shrub, as well as becoming brittle. Seed Potatoes have been out in the nurseries and garden centres for a while now, this is the perfect time to start Chitting your potatoes. This is when you place them in a cool light place to help them produce short green shoots. This will in turn give the seed potatoes a head start when you place them in the soil. Place the potatoes in an empty egg box or in seed tray. Once they have produced the shoots you can rub of some of the shoots leaving about three strong shoots. Wait until the soil has warmed and dried up before planting them. New potatoes are a must with your salad in the summer and make a wonderful addition to your plate. If you haven t grown New Potatoes before I can suggest Arran Pilot these are good for boiling and are scab resistant. Of course to go with new potatoes you must have Mentha (Mint). This is best planted in a container to keep it under control, as it s an invasive plant. Remember any plant you grow in a container must be regularly fed and watered, especially during the growing season. Mint makes an excellent accompaniment to strawberries and Pimms! Most of the trees I have mentioned over last year have been deciduous ie lose their leaves in the autumn, why not think about an evergreen, I m suggesting Pinus Mungo adding wonderful interest in the middle of winter, even though we are in March and lots of blossom will be out the Pinus will still add interest. Pinus Mungo is a dwarf slowing growing Pinus. Alistair s Tip: Make the most of the long weekend Gardening weekend of the Year, this being Easter. Fences, trellises, stakes and ties have all taken a battering this winter so do check before the season gets going in full swing, that they will be able to support this coming seasons growth. 28 BLASTON NEWS Please keep the evening of Thursday 10 th March clear for the Annual Meeting of Blaston St Giles and Blaston Village at 7:30 pm, at The Old Barn, by kind invitation of Phil and Helen Kennedy. 6 Bringhurst, Drayton and Nevill Holt Parish Meeting Report The first Parish Meeting of the year was held in Drayton Church on January 15th, and, despite the weather, was well-attended. There were reports and ongoing discussions on issues raised at September's meeting, in particular the problem of very large construction and agricultural vehicles passing through Drayton and along narrow lanes. The Meeting had written to the Strategic Planning Team, making the case that Drayton should not be considered as a village suitable for further development, and we had received a favourable indication in reply. The installation of the Gigaclear cable is now almost complete, but is nine months behind schedule, and as a result many potential customers have had to find alternative suppliers. The cable is visible and vulnerable in places in Bringhurst, and the Meeting will refer this to the contractors. ABC s Tidy Gardens Offering a full range of services for garden maintenance and landscaping. A large team of male & female workers to tackle everything in the garden, but more importantly NOT to let you down. We are regularly in your area. For a winter makeover, tree work, hedges, fencing (all types), clearance etc, call Alister on The Meeting was called primarily to consider the draft Parish Precept Requirement for , prior to submitting to Harborough D.C.. Copies of the budget proposal were circulated, together with a current financial statement. Following a brief discussion, the Precept Requirement was approved unanimously. The Community Safety Team at Harborough D.C. are consulting with Parishes in order to ascertain the priorities of local people, as they draw up a revised Community Safety Plan. Those present at the Meeting were circulated with information sheets outlining the seven main groupings targeted by the Team, ranging from crime and violence through various forms of anti-social behaviours to traffic and environmental nuisances. In addition, attendees were given questionnaires in which they could rate their top three priorities and add their own comments; these were collated by the Clerk and forwarded to the Council. Top of the poll of concerns was traffic issues, by a narrow margin from crime prevention, with environmental nuisances being a popular third choice. Attention was drawn to the escalation in fly-tipping at the Bringhurst railway bridge, where gates, fencing, and now the bridge parapet itself have all been vandalised. The meeting concluded with an appraisal of two planning applications concerning the felling of trees at Nevil Holt. The plan is to replace the smaller lime trees in The Avenue, while trimming the adjacent mature limes, and also to fell a cluster of spruce trees to the south of the Hall. After some discussion, the Meeting approved the plans, with the proviso that all trees removed in The Avenue should be replaced; and that the tree-felling elsewhere should not be allowed to damage the footpath nearby. The next meeting will be held in May, and will be the AGM - Monday 16th May 2016 Post Office and Village Stores Open Monday - Friday Saturday Sunday POST OFFICE, FRESH BREAD & PASTRIES, DRY CLEANING, NEWSPAPERS, GROCERIES, FRESH FRUIT & VEGETABLES, DELICATESSEN, COTTAGE DELIGHT PRODUCTS, SANDWICHES, CHILLED DRINKS, GREETINGS CARDS. 11 Medbourne Defibrillator January 2016 UPDATE Following the letter we sent out at the end of last year we are pleased to report a positive response to our fundraising efforts. We have started to contact everyone in the village to ask if they would like to make a donation and we will continue to ask for donations until the fund if closed. Our intention is to fund one defibrillator for Medbourne to be located in the porch of St Giles Church. The funds being raised are to cover the cost of purchasing the defibrillator, installing it and to provide a fund to maintain and insure it over the next 5 years. If, after the generosity of villagers, we raise more money than is needed for this well set up a fund which is specifically to train people in the local areas in first aid. We are currently discussing the most effective way of organising such training and look forward to keeping you updated on these plans. Please do get in touch if you would like to contribute to the fund. We have opened a bank account and cheques can be made payable to Medbourne Defibrillator Fund. We hope to have raised sufficient funds by Easter. Finally we have co-opted Jo Milligan and Rebekah Budenberg to join us on the fundraising project. David and Val Tyler, 8 Springbank, Medbourne Medbourne cum Holt WI On Wednesday 9th March 2016 Katharine Fortnum will be coming along to give members a demonstration of the beautiful and unique creations that can be created at her Ceramics Workshops based in Market Harborough Our meetings are held once a month in the Village Hall at 7.30pm and new members are always most welcome to come along. She had been brought up to 'Make Do and Mend', and this had given her a good grounding as an adult, for she was able to tackle any household job - repairing washing machines, decorating, dressmaking and preparing a meal from very few ingredients. Biff brought along many household artefacts from yesteryear and it was our job to identify them and their uses. We all scored quite highly since several of the items were similar to the ones our mothers had used (or we could remember from our youth!!). On Wednesday 2nd March our speaker will be James Belderbos and his subject will be: 'Exploring the Myth of Family Law' Do come along and join us.
