While his context is the US, we only have to look at British politics to see that this would seem to also be true here. Sullivan writes about a compounding combination of differences into two coherent tribes, eerily balanced in political power, fighting not just to advance their own side but to provoke, condemn, and defeat the other. Sullivan argues that tribalism is beguiling because it does not require much thought, rather one needs to know nothing more than any given subject which side you re on A tribal leader calls the shots, and everything slips into place. After a while, your immersion in tribal loyalty makes the activities of another tribe not just alien but close to incomprehensible. Sullivan then cites George Orwell s dictum that There is no crime, absolutely none, that cannot be condoned when our side commits it. Sullivan then reaches his own conclusion that tribalism results in us against them thinking. To counter this kind of thinking, Sullivan appeals to the words of Pope Francis delivered on his visit to Colombia, where a fragile peace agreement was under constant threat. Pope Francis urged, All of us are necessary to create and form a society. This isn t just done with the pure-blooded ones, but rather with everyone. And here is where the greatness of the country lies, in that there is room for all and all are important. The Pope s words encourage us to move from a Them against Us way of thinking to an Us and Them way of looking at the world, the lesson we first learned when we were encouraged to play together nicely in the sand tray at play school. However I am led to question whether this Us and Them is sufficient. As a person of faith seeking to live in accordance with the values of God s Kingdom is there not more? The Jesus of the Gospel instructs all who would follow him: If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. Jesus counters the Us against Them of the modern age with an Us for Them view of the world which may be lived out in both words and actions. The story of the Good Samaritan is about serving others without looking for reciprocity - Us living for Them - a way out of the destructive tribalism of our age. The Revd. Stephen Bishop Rector 30 3

4 BLASTON NEWS We are still waiting for approval from the diocese for our faculty for getting on with the floor repairs and so with regret Blaston St Giles is still not open to the public. Meanwhile, we continue to be very grateful to Nini and Robin Murray-Philipson for inviting us to The Garden House for celebrate our regular Blaston services. These services are always well attended and the atmosphere is serene. On behalf of Wilfred Coon (Churchwarden) BRINGHURST NEWS Due to required building work, St Nicholas Church will be closed for the time being. The next monthly service scheduled to take place at Bringhurst will take place at St James Church, Drayton and will be held on: Sunday 21 st October We are very grateful to Drayton Church for hosting this service. STOP PRESS We are delighted to report that St Nicholas Church may be open for worship in time to celebrate the Advent Carol Service on Sunday 2 nd December at 6 pm. Please do come along for this very special service which begins the period of Advent in the parish. ALL VERY WELCOME Margaret Stamp (Churchwarden) DRAYTON NEWS A village reminder that the next village Eucharist Service will be held at Drayton Church on: Sunday 7 th October ALL WELCOME David Hill - Brookes (Churchwarden) UPDATE As you may know, our application to the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for a substantial grant to renovate the Village Hall was not successful. We have now had a meeting with HLF and have been given some excellent advice on how to improve our application to increase our chances of success at our next attempt. The good news is we were advised that the case for the renovation and repair of the main building was well made. We were told that we should definitely submit another application once the issues raised have been addressed. The HLF grant system is currently being radically changed and it is therefore likely that we will be unable to submit a new application until March At least this gives us plenty of time to rework the application and rectify the shortcomings of the first. -ooooo- The Village Hall Committee would like to thank Colin Lawson for many years of lawn mowing and hedge trimming. Colin has had to step down for health reasons and the Committee wish him well for the future. Ben Brindle ably stepped in to Colin s shoes during the school holidays and the Committee thank him for his efforts and his conscientious approach to the job. We now have a team of several young people all teenagers at school who are prepared to turn out and offer assistance at events for the Village Hall. In an age where the younger generation are often heavily criticised we are grateful that we have such a great bunch in the Village. Unfortunately, the Hall continues to deteriorate, resulting in higher costs and we struggle to cover the ongoing day to day costs. Reluctantly, the Committee have decided to increase the hire fees for the first time since From 1 st September 2018 one off hire charges will increase from 25 to 30 for local users and from 30 to 35 for others. Regular user groups will be advised directly of any changes made to their rates. Further details as well as the Minutes of our Meetings can be found on the Village Hall website. Dr JOHN SUTTON historian and past chairman of the Leicestershire & Rutland Western Front Association gives a presentation on THE SUFFRAGETTE MOVEMENT: VOTES FOR WOMEN Visitors and guests are always warmly welcome only 3 (including refreshments) Parish Office Opening Hours in October 2018 Just a brief note to confirm that the Parish Office will be open on Tuesday 2 nd and Wednesday 3 rd October Tuesday 9 th and Wednesday 10 th October Wednesday 17 th Tuesday 23 rd, Wednesday 24 th and 25 th October (in place of Tuesday 16 th October) Tuesday 30 th and Wednesday 31 st October The office is open between 9am and 1pm T The Parish Office E. secretary@sixsaintscircaholt.org Gardeners Corner October 2018 By Alistair Peak PGS The hot summery weather may seem a distant memory, although October can still bring us lovely days even if the start and end of days are a little cooler, this should not stop you from enjoying your time out in the garden. Tender plants that you have had outside throughout the summer should be brought into the house for more protection eg Half Hardy Fuchsias and Pelargoniums, these will give you more colour next year if kept indoors, not too warm the cooler the better but not freezing temperatures. Should you have any other plants in pots and tubs it would be wise to move these closer to the house to give some protection from the worst of the winter weather, ideally on a south facing site so they get the winter sunshine but any wall will give some protection along with possibly wrapping them up with fleece, do secure this tightly as you don t want this flapping about over the winter! Water is a great joy in gardens adding sound, interest and a wonderful haven for wildlife, though if you have a water feature now is the time to think about either draining it down or covering it, so that the leaves do not get into it and block up the filter systems. Pruning is still busy on your list of jobs to do this autumn, especially if you have buddleias, lavateras or even hybrid roses require reducing down by approx. half to prevent wind rock this is where the plant moves about a lot in the soil and causes water to sit there and freeze and in turn may rot off the plant stem, so by reducing the size of the plant you make the plant smaller so it does not act like a sail! Leaves are so interesting to look at from curly, flat, red, purple, yellow green variegated, blue, orange (as Joseph and The Amazing Colour Coat says) the list goes on and on adding so much to your garden giving the opportunity to show off other plants or even to stand alone for themselves. This Autumn will be interesting to see what happens with the Fall as the colours are normally effected by the coolness of the weather for the change of colour. The Fall has already started due to the dryness of the summer however do collect them up and add them to your compost heap or make a separate Leaf heap/leaf Bin, Then use in twelve months as leaf mould is an excellent conditioner for your soil but low in nutrients. The soil is still warm at present so if you have not tidied up your borders and you still need to divide your herbaceous plants now is a good time to do so. These would ideally be done every three or four years, as the centre part of the plant tends to die off. When you divide always replant in odd numbers the norm is three or five, but you can go as many as you have space for. Apply plenty of garden compost and a handful of bone Meal underneath as this helps with root establishment. Alistairs Tip: Carry on mowing your lawn, give a good rake if still struggling to come back after the summer heat wave. Mow on a higher setting though. 6 27

13 Winter Ball in aid of Pancreatic Cancer The diagnosis of any type of cancer is the news that everyone dreads hearing and there are very few families that this disease has not touched in one form or another. Even more recently I found out a statistic about Pancreatic Cancer that shocked me completely! Forty years ago few children survived childhood leukaemia. Now the survival rate is 80% Forty years ago only 46% of women diagnosed with breast cancer survived five years or more. Now that figure is also 80%. Forty years ago only 3% of people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer survived 5 years. That figure is still 3%! To that end, this explains why we have decided to organise a Ball in aid of the Pancreatic Cancer Action charity, in order to raise as much as possible to fight this disease, which takes no prisoners and is so silent. It has even more resonance since my brother and uncle were both victims of pancreatic and father lung cancer. The generosity of people knows no bounds and we have received some tremendous support and sponsorship already. It is on the 10 th November at Ashley Barn. The tickets are going well so if you would like to attend please do let me know and I will send you the menu choices. Also we will need some help on the night, or on Sunday morning to clear up, if anyone can spare the time. It would be much appreciated. If so please again contact me on the number below. Details of the Ball are on page 20 of this magazine. Thank you. Michael Rickman equestrian@talktalk.net 20 13

One of my earliest memories of Harvest is in the early days of the war, , and although still at school some of the older children were given time to help bring in the harvest. One job I remember was following the man with a scythe round the headlands of the cornfield and tying the sheaves. This enabled the binder to have a clear track around the crop. The binder was a machine that cut the corn and tied it into sheaves. The sheaves were then made into stooks of about eight which enabled the corn to dry out. Eventually, weather permitting, the corn was carried by horse and wagon to the farmyard where it was stacked. The stacks were later thatched to make them weatherproof; and later in the year when the thrashing tackle was available the corn would be separated from the straw. The resulting crop would then be sold or used for animal feed. All of this work was labour intensive, time consuming and very hard work, and the yield was totally dependent on the weather being good or bad. As the war progressed and bigger yields were being demanded by the Government, the modernisation of farming started to creep in. By the end of the war the combine harvesters (albeit primitive) had started to put in an appearance on some of the bigger farms. This modernisation still goes on to the present day when we now have giant combine harvesters with a foot cut doing the whole job in two to three hours depending on the size of the field. All these changes in my lifetime. The end of Harvest was celebrated with a Harvest Festival or Thanksgiving which was held in both the Parish Church and the Methodist Chapel. This service is still held in the church today, but it was a much bigger event years ago. The church would be full of flowers and garden produce; pride of place usually went to Mr Cocks's giant chrysanthemums on the altar table. A large congregation (over two hundred attended one year) and choir sang the hymns and anthems lustily, and everyone thanked God that all was safely gathered in. On the Monday following all the produce was carried to the church room, which stood near the cemetery gates in Lounts Crescent. There the produce was auctioned off with much hilarity and good humour to raise money for the church. This festival also took place at the Methodist Chapel, usually a week earlier again with a packed congregation and sale on the Monday. Church and Chapel always combined these special occasions. Thank God that this special service still exists today, and long may it continue
