The proliferation of such days means that it is easy for us to miss one or to suffer from compassion fatigue or a sense of consciousness-raising overload. Mindful of this risk, I nonetheless feel that I cannot in all conscience ignore the Day marked on February 20th and so am drawing attention to it here. World Day of Social Justice was begun by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 2007 to grow support for international efforts in eradicating poverty, promoting full employment, and encouraging gender equality and justice for all. World Day of Social Justice provides us all with an good opportunity to focus attention on the barriers to social wellbeing that millions of people face because of gender, age, race, ethnicity, religion, culture or disability. This year s theme is Workers on the Move: the Quest for Social Justice. It may not seem like something that immediately engages us here in the relatively settled countryside, but it will have particular relevance for people in many communities across this and other countries. Why Should We Care About Social Justice? As a Christian, as a parent, the following diverse range of social justice issues and perspectives give me pause for thought and reason to care: Over 1.5 million children under the age of 5 die each year from vaccinepreventable diseases. (WHO) There are currently 800 million people who do not have access to safe drinking water. (UNESCO) Armed forces in 20 countries are recruiting child soldiers under the age of 18. (Child Soldiers International) Eighty-two million girls now aged 10 to 17 will be married before their 18th birthday (UNFP). One hundred million more women would be alive today if females had equal access to nutrition and health care. (WHO) Of the 4.5 million refugees forced to flee Syria, over one million are children. (UNHRC) Migrant workers account for 4.4 percent of all workers and have higher labour force participation rates than non-migrants globally 30 3
Most migration today is linked directly or indirectly to the search for decent work opportunities. The gap between rich and poor within and among nations continues to grow and promote conflict. Social justice is an underlying principle for peaceful and prosperous coexistence within and among nations A sustainable future involves meeting the needs of all people. A Prayer for Social Justice God, we pray that Your Spirit may rule over all things. May Your Spirit rule over kings and presidents, over prime ministers and generals, over CEOs and party leaders, over the legislature and over the bureaucrats, over all citizens. May Your Spirit guide us on the way of peace on the way of honest dialogue on the way of reconciliation between peoples on the way of disarmament and justice On the way of welcoming and honouring the marginalised and dispossessed, on the way of freedom and life for all. May Your Spirit lead us on the journey of blessings shared with all on the journey of educational opportunity for all our children on the adventure of research and study that helps all men and women on the road to meaningful work for all people on the path of solidarity and love between all our brothers and sisters. May Your Spirit help us to speak up with courage to share what we have and what we are to challenge the powers that be to offer a message of liberation and life. We make this prayer through Christ, our Lord. Amen The Revd. 5 Lest we forget. Following the recent celebrations marking one hundred years since the end of the slaughter of World War 1, it behoves us all to continue to remember the sacrifices made by good men and women throughout the world in defence of justice, and in opposing barbarity. DRAFT SCHEDULE ONLY Martin van Oppen (Churchwarden, St Giles, Medbourne) Heroic Humankind lest we forget Forget not Passchendale, Verdun, Brave men at Ypres. Bloated, bloodied, twisted bodies buried deep, In shell-holes, oozing, stinking mud and trenches. All lie quiet, whilst persistent rain forever drenches. Remember Jutland, our finest sailors there to die. Gallipoli, the Dardanelles where Anzac allies lie. Americans, Canadians, South Africans, allies all From round the world, responded to our Call. Down through the ages, with no thought of fear, Good folk maimed and slaughtered year on year. Remember Dunkirk, the Blitz. Burma and the Jap, Followed by Malaya and Korea, with bare a gap. Day on day, good humour tinged with sadness, Our Commonwealth united. All opposing madness. Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, dictators, madmen, rotters all, Faced by brave men and women who, sadly, often fall. With pride and with passion, hard facing the foe, Spirits never broken, strong hearts all aglow. Always to the fore, standing firm to oppressors; Those tyrants, dictators and despotic aggressors. True courage in conflict. Unswerving their loyalty, Overcoming fear, weakness and frailty. Yes, humankind s heroism, our foes ever met. We re deep in their debt. We must never forget..no, never forget! 28 5
BLASTON NEWS After an astonishing 12 months of negotiations, construction has just started on the new stone floor throughout the church to replace the rotten wooden floor. This will take some time and the nave walls will need re-plastering and decorating afterwards. Finding cash for the work is worrying and soliciting grant aid has started, so far resulting in 500 from St John s College, Cambridge and $500 from the Warwick family of New York. A great deal more is needed. Meanwhile we are grateful to Robin and Nini Murray-Philipson for having offered their home for so many Blaston services while the church is closed for repairs. If other families could make a similar offer it would share the load. The next service, on Sunday 10 th February at 9:00 am, will be at Ann and Wilf Coon s house, Hallcroft, Medbourne Road, Hallaton. Car parking in the long lay by on the road would be best, once the five places on the drive are full. Wilfred Coon (Churchwarden) BRINGHURST NEWS A village reminder that the next village Eucharist Service will be held on Sunday 17 th February 2019 at 9 am ALL VERY WELCOME Margaret Stamp (Churchwarden) DRAYTON NEWS A village reminder that the next village Eucharist Services will be held at Drayton Church on: Sunday 3 rd February 2019 ALL WELCOME David Hill - Brookes (Churchwarden) Gardeners Corner February 2019 By Alistair Peak PGS The Touch Paper has been lit Spring is on its way. It may seem a little way off yet but there are plenty of plants beginning to come into life and already showing off their best for us to enjoy whether its flowers, coloured bark and even just the bare branches being seen against the winter sunshine or even blue sky. Ok so I might not be very poetic but there is plenty to do in our garden when the weather allows. When the weather allows try and carry on with preparation of the vegetable plots, a little and often is best do not try and tackle it all in one go, otherwise the body will soon let you know! The test to let you know if the soil conditions are right for working on your plots is, if it sticks to your boots stay off the soil and find another job in the garden otherwise you will compact the soil and ruin the soil structure. Once winter flowering shrubs have finished prune them back e.g. Chimonanthus (Winter Sweet) and Jasminum Nudiflorum or even the winter flowering Viburnums. The best results for the pruning of these and any other shrubs is to remove a third of the old wood along with dead, diseased and dying wood and crossing branches. If you have winter flowering Heathers these can also be trimmed now the best way is to use hand shears. Snow Drops may still be out in flower but once they start to fade this is a good time to lift and divide them, as they can become congested and are easy to transfer elsewhere in the garden. Lift either using a spade or fork and then separate, remember to plant them back at the same level as they were before. When replanting plant in clumps of 3 to 5 bulbs per clump. Picking your own fruit from your garden or allotment gives a great sense of achievement, ok they may not be perfect in shape, size or colour however the taste cannot be beaten! If you grow Apricots, nectarines or peaches remember that you should never prune them at this time of year otherwise they can get a disease called Silver Leaf which in turn can kill these plants, they should only be pruned when they are in Full Leaf, as they can come in to blossom early. It s important that you protect them by covering with netting and ideally a plastic sheet which will in turn also help to prevent them getting another disease called Peach Leaf Curl. Clematis are a wonderful family of plants to have in your garden, some flower early in the year, some flower later in the year and even in the winter, from neatly grown plants up frame works to big scrolling out across buildings or even into trees. The pruning of Clematis is put in to Three Groups, this is perfect timing to prune Group Three, these flower in summer to early autumn, you can prune these down to about 30cm(One Foot) from the grown. Remember to feed and mulch them once this has been done. The season of mowing may be starting soon, I know a lot of mowing was put on hold last summer however remember to think about getting your mower serviced or at least have them checked over before the season starts. Alistair s Tip: Enjoy this month with the colours of spring but remember to get your seeds ordered ASAP if you like certain varieties of plants. 6 27

2019 LENT LUNCHES Easter is quite late this year so Lent does not start until Wednesday 6 th March. This means that our series of simple Lent lunches begins again on Friday, 8 th March and continues through to Friday, 12 th April. As many of you know, everyone is welcome to come to any or all of these informal lunches which happen on every Friday in Lent throughout the parish. They are intended to be a part of our preparation for Easter. The lunches are free but a donation is very welcome. The money goes to the Parish Project which, this year, is supporting a prostate cancer charity, Prostaid ( I will try to get someone from the charity to come to one of the lunches to explain their work more fully. The lunches begin at pm. There will be more information about the venues in the March parish magazine but the first one is: Post Office and Village Stores Open Monday - Friday Saturday Sunday POST OFFICE, FRESH BREAD & PASTRIES, DRY CLEANING, NEWSPAPERS, GROCERIES, FRESH FRUIT & VEGETABLES, DELICATESSEN, COTTAGE DELIGHT PRODUCTS, SANDWICHES, CHILLED DRINKS, GREETINGS CARDS. Thank you to all the villagers who gave so generously to the collection for The Children's Society when the carol singers came around the village of Great Easton in mid December. We raised over 500 which is a great result! A big thank you must also go to Jeremy and Sandra who accompanied us on their brass instruments on both nights and to the collectors who went door to door with their collection pots wishing everyone a Merry Christmas. We mustn't forget the carol singers who turned up both nights to sing the carols so beautifully with Sorcha leading the sopranos descant! Phil and Sue Johnston hosted us on Monday, and Maureen and Ken Black welcomed us in to their home on Wednesday so we thank them both for their refreshments and hospitality after 2 hours of singing our way around the village! It is an annual event which has been happening for many years and is a great start to the Christmas season. Hope you can join us again this Christmas! Many thanks, Jim and Kathy 8 To Advertise in the Magazine To advertise in this Parish Magazine please contact the parish office either via secretary@sixsaintscircaholt.org OR T (Tuesday / Wednesday 9am - 1pm) 25

A Poem for the Parish Magazine Great Easton & District WI At the December meeting of Great Easton and District WI our entertainers were The Cocktail Shaker Boys. We were treated to an amusing and anecdotal account of the history of cocktails and how they are made. After being shown how to make them, we were able to sample the two alcoholic cocktails, a Cosmopolitan and a Grass Hopper, or the two non-alcoholic mocktails, a Merry Berry Cherry and a China Blue. It was a delightful finale to our year s activities. Our January meeting was a social event at our President, Gill Iron s house, with a festive meal the following week. Our meeting on February 6 th will be a talk by the Dog s Trust. We meet in Great Easton Village Hall at 7.30 and guests are most welcome. Elisabeth Robinson Visitors are always welcome to the meeting on the first Wednesday of the month at 7.30 pm

Bradley Priory - A small Augustinian House by Ena Meechan Augustinian or Austin Canons were a very small common order of priests that followed the rules of St Augustine, living together with no personal property. They were not an enclosed order, rather they preached in the community, taught, looked after the sick and provided accommodation for travellers. They were sometimes called the Black Friars because of the black cloak they wore. Most people will never have heard if it, but for more than 300 years the Priory lay not more than 2 miles from the centre of Great Easton. If you were to go up Stockerston Road and turned left towards Park Farm, then continue passing the farm and over the parish boundary into the parish of Holt you would be almost in the field where it stood. The Ordinance Survey grid reference is However, today there is nothing to see except a ploughed field. The Great Easton field work group walked this field several years ago and found small amounts of building material, fragments of roof tile and sherds of medieval pottery. To find out more you can visit the reference section of the library in Harborough and consult the relevant volumes of The Victorian County Histories (V.C.H.) and Nichol s History of Leicestershire. Surprisingly the V.C.H. account contains some mistakes! The exact date of the foundation is not clear but the land the Priory was built on was given to the Priors by Robert Burneby, Lord of one of the two manors in Holt. The Priory was valued and taxed in 1220 so one assumes it was in existence by them. By 1226, the Priory applied for permission to bury members of their community on site rather than in the churchyard in Medbourne. In 1279 the King was at Geddington and gave instruction to the keeper of the forest of Whittlewood, near Silverstone, to let the Priory of Bradley have 3 oaks fit for timber. So it seems that the Priory was still being enlarged at the this date. Looking at all the other references to be found the V.C.H. lists 16 names of Priors, but I would argue hat there must be at least a further three not noted. There are 28 documents in the Leicester Records Office concerning Bradley. Unfortunately only 4 of these are dated, but by careful examination of the witnesses they can be put in an appropriate order. They are mostly for gifts of land, often in return for prayers to be said for the donor and his family. All are written in abbreviated medieval Latin. Quite by accident, I came across a reference in the preface to the Charters of Luffield Priory Vol 2 to a Thomas de Blaston and his wife Alice and another Thomas all of whom had been buried at Bradley shortly before 3 rd June To be continued in the March Magazine 20 13
