They lack knowledge, resources, and support. Time is running out to get a harvest. There is nothing more painful for a mother than when your child asks for plain food and you don t even have that. Five years ago Mary Nassolo s husband died of a heart attack. She was seven months pregnant. His death devastated her and their children. His business collapsed, they lost the support of his family and had to move to a small rural hut. Mary was alone with seven children and no income. Mostly they struggle. Mary needs a harvest for Life. But what does this look like for her? Friends, training and time. You can give all three. Send a Cow is the first to truly listen to my story. Six months ago, Mary became part of a Send a Cow group. This network of friendship is essential in her new venture. They meet every Monday, offering support and encouragement. Each farmer has been given vegetable seeds and seedlings to grow, together with the know how to nurture them. Mary and her fellow farmers are well o their way to their first harvest. You can support farmers like Mary to get not one harvest, but a harvest for life. There is so much promise and the future is shaping up, thanks to Send a Cow. Mary Nassalo Send a Cow need to work with farmers like Mary and her group for 3 to 5 years. Our experience shows this is one of the best ways to ensure families become truly self-sufficient. Will you support Mary and farmers like her to complete their journey? Our plate collection today will be sent to Send A Cow. Thank you for your support. The Revd. Stephen Bishop Rector 30 3

4 BLASTON NEWS Blaston s summer picnic party in August was a most enjoyable, very sociable success. This was due to the kindness of Nini and Robin Murray-Philipson in hosting it and the generosity of everyone attending. The church benefited by 796, with grateful thanks. Harvest Festival is on Sunday 8th October at 6:00 pm, when the Revd. David Maudlin SSc, will be our guest preacher. The church will be open on Saturday 7 th to receive your decorations of flowers and offertories of foodstuffs. The edible gifts will be taken to St Luke s hospital afterwards. There will be a harvest refreshments party in church after the service so your gifts of party food and wine will be very welcome thank you! Please do your best to be at this important village celebration of thanks for our sustenance. On the day after harvest, the church will be taken over by the contractors and the architect to start the floor restoration and the nave redecoration. At last we are about to see some beautification of the church after all our fundraising and seeking grant aid! This work will be finished in time for our Christmas carol service at which St Peter s, Stockerston will be our guests. Family on Duty Reminder: October: Jane Graham and Stephanie Sharpe. November: No service due to work in church December: Kennedy family and Cory family Wilfred Coon, Churchwarden STOCKERSTON NEWS Many thanks to all who came to our service on Sunday 24 th September, it was good to see you all. This is a good time to get on with the planting up of your spring bedding, eg Wallflowers, Sweet William, Primulas, Winter Flowering Pansies and Bulbs. It s so tempting when your summer bedding is doing well to delay putting in your Spring Bedding but as the soil is still warm try and get the above planted ASAP. When removing your summer bedding try to dig over the area thoroughly and incorporate some organic mater or garden compost, as the soil will have been starved of goodness from the plants you have just taken out. Very often when you have had bedding plants, the soil will become dry and compacted where the plants have grown so do ensure you dig over thoroughly. With our springs becoming drier if you are planting new plants in the spring watering is really a big issue. I know we can t predict what our winters are going to be like, however I am beginning to think we should consider planting up hardy plants more in the autumn so as to get the plants established before the worst of our winters. This works well with plants that are bought bare rooted, which must be planted between leaf fall and leaf break. Should you be doing any work with your herbaceous plants now is a good time to do this. Many herbaceous plants grow better by dividing every three or four years, as very often the centre part of the plant dies, so now is a good time to divide. As with any new planting remember to add plenty of organic matter, which will help to hold moisture in the following season. I would also give the plants a handful Bone Meal as this will help with the establishment of the root system. This is season of tidying up, remember to leave some plants for wildlife eg. seed heads or even a few leaves in the corner of your garden for wildlife to hide in. It s a good idea to collect in any stakes you have used throughout the season, give them a good clean and store away before they rot in the soil. Check tree stakes and ties and plants on walls/ fences to ensure they are secure before the autumn winds/storms arrive. Alistair Tip: It s not to late to continue mowing but do so on dry days and lift up the cutting deck so as not to scalp the lawns. Finally enjoy this lovely time of year! 6 27

GREAT EASTON FIFTY YEARS AGO We moved to Great Easton in 1964, and I have been trying to remember the village as it was then. Musk Close was still a paddock; Clarkesdale and Barnsdale Close were built in the mid-60s, with young families moving in some, like me, still here. There were no big superstores in Corby then and we shopped in the village, or with tradesmen who called weekly. Mr and Mrs Hare kept the post office and general store at no. 1 High Street. Mr Hare would get you paint, wallpaper and hardware goods to order. Mr and Mrs Rugg kept the present village shop and also had petrol pumps, a bus and a taxi. There was a butcher s shop on Cross Bank (Mr T. Clarke). Mr Joe Clarke kept dairy cows, bottled the milk and delivered it daily round the village. A baker and a greengrocer came from Cottingham, and once a week a man from Desborough selling hardware items and paraffin for heating and cooking stoves. A fish van came once a week, and the mobile library fortnightly. There was a daily bus to Harborough at 7.20 am, returning at 6.00 pm, and two buses on Tuesdays and Saturdays market days. Rockingham station closed in The line ran from Rugby to Peterborough, stopping at Harborough and small village stations. The Women s Institute met monthly in the village hall. Betty Adams was President and Daisy Wright (Jim s mother) Secretary. There was an Old Time Dancing Club and weekly whist drives. Did we have a Fur and Feather whist drive, with prizes such as rabbits, hares, chickens and pheasants? I can t remember. There were tennis, cricket and football clubs. The cricket field was in Stockerston Road and the football field in Gatehouse Lane. Next month I will write about the churches and schools. If anyone has memories of fifty years ago to share, please contact me on Local Historical Information Prepared by Anne Wallis 10 23

16 An Anthem for Our Time: Brahms Requiem St Andrew s Church, Lyddington The Harborough Singers will perform Brahms Requiem at St Andrew s Church Lyddington, on Saturday 28 th October. There has been a sudden craze for this work and people have begun calling it an Anthem for our Time. It seems that, rather than dwelling on the judgement of the dead, Brahms was intent on consoling the living. Brahms himself said that he would gladly have called it a human requiem. It is this human focus, and the works freedom from religious judgment, that is proving particularly relevant to modern audiences in our troubled but spiritually uncertain times. The New York season opened with an immersive staging of this human requiem. Sung in English, two pianists replaced Brahms s orchestra and choristers in street clothes wandered among the audience members. This is the version that the Harborough Singers will present at Lyddington. Though if there is any choral wandering involved, the Musical Director, David Beavan, has yet to inform the choir! Brahms version of the Requiem is decidedly non-latin. He wrote it in German, assembling the text himself from Luther s German translation of the Bible. It is an almost secular piece and avoids any mention of Christ. It even eradicates the fearsome and showy Dies Irae (Day of Wrath), set so vividly and memorably by other composers. Brahms wrote this self-contained version himself. It was probably intended for at - home use, with the vocal parts supported by a piano duet with four hands on one piano. But it is not merely a piano reduction. Meticulously fashioned by the composer himself, it s notable for its transparency, which throws into sharp relief the choral writing of the work. Premiered in London on 18th July 1871, at the home of Sir Henry Thompson and his wife, the pianist Kate Loder (Lady Thompson) and sung in English, it soon spread to vast international audiences. Uplifting and inspiring, with a new relevance for modern audiences, Brahms Requiem at Lyddington is a treat not to be missed. Four hands on the piano will be provided by Melanie Reinhard and Andrew King with soprano soloist Laura Bursey and baritone soloist Michael Bundy. The programme also includes Brahms Violin Sonata No 3 in D minor, with Christopher White on Violin and Melanie Reinhard on piano. The concert starts at 7.30 pm. Tickets are available at 10 per ticket from the following places: Uppingham Book Shop, the Old White Hart, Lyddington, Great Easton Village Shop and Medbourne Village Shop. Tickets are also available online via our website at A note of thanks... Thank you for your continued support of the Food Bank - Just a reminder that EVERYTHING DONATED MUST STILL BE IN DATE AND HAVE AT LEAST 3 MONTHS OF SHELF LIFE LEFT.
