They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted; They fell with their faces to the foe. They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. Plaque unveiled in 2003 at Polzeath to commemorate the place where For the Fallen is believed to have been composed. On Remembrance Sunday, 12 th November, we will gather together to remember those who gave their lives in the service of their country and in the cause of peace. I am sure that I am not alone in finding the reading of the names of those from our villages intensely moving. For some of course, the experience is more personal. For some in our community, there remain the names and faces of family members and friends to recall. Alongside our poignant and bittersweet recollection, Remembrance Sunday is also time for the expression of a heartfelt hope, of a high aspiration. The daily reality of war, conflict and the threat of terrorism which faces us in the media and which faces many in our world at much closer and more shocking quarters, may make the hope that war and conflict may end seem like a hopeless dream. But peace - shalom - the wholeness of God (so much more than the absence of war) is the hope at the heart of the Judaeo - Christian tradition. The prophetic hope is one of universal peace. In God s reign, they shall beat the swords into ploughshares, and their spears into pruning hooks. Awaiting the coming of the reign of God and working to see God s Kingdom of peace and justice established on earth is the church s Advent theme. To keep Advent faithfully is to keep alive the hope that the horrors, scars and weeping of war will one day belong to the past. In Revelation, this is described evocatively, God will wipe every tear away. For death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for the first things have passed away. May we pray, live and work seeking the coming of God s Kingdom. The Revd. Stephen Bishop Rector 30 3

4 BLASTON NEWS Harvest Festival on 8 October was a very well attended communion service in a beautifully decorated church, with robust singing. Afterwards, there were jovial refreshments with almost the whole village there. Many thanks for the generous gifts of flowers, produce and tasty refreshments and for time devoted to decorating. Next day, the edible items 6 full boxes were taken to The Willows in Market Harborough where they were well received. Blaston welcomes six new arrivals to the village Dan and Jane with little Joey and Cloe in Orchard House and Steve and Emily in Clock Tower Flat. We wish them a happy time among us and it was a good start to greet them all at harvest festival. The church is now in the hands of the contractors for floor restoration and re-decorating. Family on Duty Reminder: November: No service due to work in church December: Kennedy family with help from all for Christmas decorating. January: Blaaberg family STOCKERSTON NEWS Many thanks to all of you who baked, preserved, brought things for the tombola, raffle, bric-a-brac and generally helped at our harvest sale. Stop Press: Due to works being carried out in Blaston Church, the Christmas Carol Service planned for Wednesday 20 th December will now take place at St Peter s Church, Stockerston. Many of us think that it is best to leave all the jobs until the spring, however spring will be here before we know it! If we have had a lot of rain keep off the borders or if you do need to work on or around the border put down some boards to spread the weight. Keep the paths and lawns clear of leaves, this will keep the areas looking good, prevent the area from becoming unsightly, prevent the lawns dying from lack of light and more importantly making the paths safe to walk on as they will become very slippery. Leaves make wonderful leaf mould to add to your soil, it will improve the structure of the soil making it more friable, encouraging worms which are an asset to the garden. Leaf mould does not add nutrients but if applied heavily each year, will make your soil more acidic. If you haven t done it yet, moving tender plants must be a high priority this month. If you cannot bring them indoors move them closer to the house, ideally on the south side. Remember to lift the pots off the ground with some form of Feet or even wood to allow the water to drain away as it s more often than not the wet that kills plants rather than the cold. We are moving into a great time for pruning, which is close to my heart. For now it s important to reduce down roses, which are in the floribunda, Hybrid T or shrub group. The main reason is to prevent wind rock. If you leave them tall they will sway about and leave a hole at the base of the plant, which can cause water to sit there and freeze and rot the roots. In your fruit and vegetable plots as the areas become vacant clear leaves, weeds and any spare crops to harvest. Continue to dig over and leave for the winter weather to help break down. Rhubarb is a wonderful plant being great to eat in many forms along with great architectural leaves, however like all plants they do require keeping in check. Now is a perfect time to lift and divide them. They will take a little work to lift but once you have lifted reduce down the clumps discarding the centre of the old plant and replanting the outer part do ensure it has an Eye which is where the plant will shoot from next year. When replanting do replenish the soil with plenty of organic matter as Rhubarb is an extremely hungry plant. Avoid picking the stems in the first year. Alistair Tip: Keep putting out the feed for our feathered friends and replenish water containers with fresh water particularly if frozen. OR ENQUIRE AT GREAT EASTON VILLAGE SHOP 6 27

10 GREAT EASTON & DISTRICT GARDEN SOCIETY Our next meeting will be on Wednesday 15th November 7.30 pm in the Village Hall. By Stephen Gibson THE 1960 s IN GREAT EASTON continued In 1964 when I came to Great Easton, Mr Johnson was the vicar. He lived in the Old Vicarage now the home of the Snow family. The parish was just Great Easton, Bringhurst and Drayton; we joined with Medbourne in Services were attended with a good choir of men, women and children. Dick Stanger played the organ. Luther Wright (Jim s father) was verger. He looked after the church and also dug graves and cut the grass, for many years with a hand mower. He was paid 20 a year. Sunday School was held in the church room a wooden building at the end of Lounts Crescent. It had been a navvies hut when the railway was built in the 1850s. After harvest festival a sale of produce was held there on the Monday evening. Most people grew their own fruit and vegetables in those days and the church would be decorated with produce. The Methodist Chapel had a service every Sunday usually taken by a lay preacher as we had no resident minister. They also had a harvest festival and sale of produce, which was auctioned by Eric Shorley, one of the lay preachers. The church fete was held at the Manor, then the home of Mr Marcus Kimball MP later Lord Kimball. The Fernie Hunt met there every year. Competition A Pot Plant New members and visitors always welcome. Visitors 2 including refreshments Great Easton Good Companions Instead of meeting in the village hall on Thursday 5 th November members and friends will go by coach to Waterside Garden Centre, Baston, Lincolnshire which will be decorated for Christmas. The school was just for pupils from Great Easton, Bringhurst and Drayton and had only two classrooms. Mrs Cartwright was the headmistress and Mrs Love taught the infants. At the end of the 1960s Mrs Cartwright retired and Mr Needham became headmaster. Mrs Love took the children blackberry picking and made jam. She showed them how to shake cream in a jar and make butter. They each had a biscuit with their morning milk, with the butter and blackberry jam. She told them about her mother s butter churn, on display in Oakham Museum. On Pancake Day she made pancakes, with the children bringing eggs, milk and flour from home. Local Historical Information Prepared by Anne Wallis Waterside also sells a wide variety of goods including gifts, clothes, games and puzzles as well as the usual indoor and outdoor garden plants and equipment. The Oasis restaurant has an extensive menu offering a good selection of food and drink. The coach will leave from The Sun at 9.30 am and depart for home at 2.00 pm leaving plenty of time for serious retail therapy, so do not forget your shopping bags. Meetings are usually held in the Village Hall on the first Thursday of the month at 2.30 pm and visitors are always welcome

11 GREAT EASTON & DISTRICT LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY Wednesday, 22 nd November 7.30 pm Village Hall Harborough Movie Makers are showing two of their popular films: TRESHAM S HOUSES and MEMORIES OF A LAND GIRL Visitors are always warmly welcome only 2 (including refreshments) Great Easton History Society's popular publications are on sale at our village shop Good News Trust Rutland team Update Unfortunately the team are having to close the Rutland Van this Summer due to insufficient younger people coming forward to help run the work. 12 Great Easton & District WI Barbara Everest's demonstration on traditional methods of making homemade pasta was most interesting. This basic artisan pasta uses only Italian Pasta Flour and free-range eggs, but can be flavoured with spinach, beetroot, tomatoes and several other natural ingredients. We were able to purchase bags of pasta to enjoy at home in our own recipes. Our Annual Meeting is on Wednesday 1st November at 7.30pm when, hopefully, members will be invited to join the committee for the following year. This will be followed by one of our members leading us through some gentle (and some not so gentle) exercises. The evening will be rounded off with refreshments, including wine and nibbles! Our meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month at 7.30pm in Do come along and join us - visitors are always welcome. 15 GREAT EASTON PARISH COUNCIL The defibrillator has now been ordered and will be installed as soon as the planning application is finalised due to the listed status of the phone box. An event will be held to explain how the defibrillator will be accessed and used. Geoffrey Gilfillan from the Welland Project addressed the parish council meeting to ask for local community assistance in planting trees along and around the river to improve wild life and habitat. This welcome initiative follows a generous bequest from the family in memory of David Douche who was the Parish clerk for many years and a well liked and respected member of our community. Some 200 trees are expected to be available for the project and some landowners are already involved in the scheme. The PC is looking for volunteers to form a working party to tackle odd-jobs around the village. Anyone interested in putting themselves forward to help maintain our lovely village environment please let the clerk, David Gibley have your details either by phone or david@webleicester.co.uk NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN Due to a legal challenge regarding the process following the deletion of the footpath commitment HDC is conducting a second Consultation. The Village Referendum will now likely be in January 2018 and full details will be announced once the date is confirmed. Phil Long, Chair of Great Easton Parish Council Bringhurst Primary School Do you know of any children due to start school next year? Bringhurst Primary has so much to offer young children and has been rated good again at its recent Ofsted Inspection with many positives highlighted in the report. We also have had some of the best results in Leicestershire in the last 3 years. Yet not everyone seems to know where we are and we still have places in our current Reception and in other school years. Situated between the villages of Great Easton and Bringhurst, from which we take our name, is our wonderful village school set in the beautiful Leicestershire countryside. The school is a member of the David Ross Education Trust which brings a wealth of enrichment opportunities in sports, music, drama and the arts. So come and see us on our Open Day on 17 th November at 9.30am, 1.30 pm and 6.30pm; please phone the office on to book a visit. Applications for first time admissions need to be made to the local authority by 15 th January We would also like to invite members of the community to join us at our Christmas Fair on Friday 8th December 3pm - 5pm and to our Christmas Service in Great Easton Church on Tuesday 19th December at 2pm. We would also like to thank anyone who supported our recent MacMillan Coffee morning where we raised an amazing 470!
