The play opens with a scene representing graduation day from missionary school. Young earnest men, identically attired in short-sleeved white shirts, black ties and black trousers, are waiting to find out who their missionary partner will be and where they will be sent for the next two years to knock on doors and distribute the Book of Mormon. The class s straight A student is hoping to be assigned to Orlando, Florida and anticipates that he will be given an equally capable partner. Instead, his missionary companion is Arnold, a hopeless case who barely scraped through missionary school, and is a source of shame to his parents and his tradition. There is further disappointment for him when the missionary pair miss out on Disney World and are sent instead to Uganda. Their bright and shining zeal stands in contrast to the warlords and poverty they encounter. On arrival they learn that those missionaries who have been assigned earlier have converted and baptised precisely no one during their time there. The nerdy missionary Arnold befriends a young woman who is about to be forcibly circumcised by the warlord who oppresses and intimidates the tribe. Arnold protects her. Whilst in hiding, Arnold tells her about the Book of Mormon. There is one significant problem. Arnold has not read the central holy book of his tradition, and so he shares with her about the parts he thinks he knows, adding in elements of Star Wars movies and Star Trek episodes, about which he is passionate and better informed. He creates an outlandish story, which changes her life. She shares the story with father and the people of the tribe, and Arnold successfully converts the whole tribe. All goes well until the Mormon bishop comes to meet this amazing missionary and the tribe tells the story he has taught them. While the play, at times deliberately offensive and provocative, may seem unpromising ground for theological reflection, I think there may be some things to be learned from it, perhaps despite the authors intentions. The play raises interesting questions about the nature of religious truth and authority and about our criteria for assessing that truth. It also points particularly to the need to tread carefully in our encounters and dialogue with the religious truth of others. Finally, it reminds us that any religious faith is moribund unless it brings about change for the better in our lives and inspires us to treat others and ourselves with respect and dignity. 3

5 Gardeners Corner SEPTEMBER 2013 Harvest Festivals 2013 At the time of writing, summer has just arrived nearly, and I m anticipating the normal September when the night air freshens, the spiders are busy making their beautiful webs and the dew dutifully laces them, hinting at the coming of Autumn. However summer has been soooo late arriving, who knows what September will bring. So you have ordered your bulbs and you are thinking of planting them up. If the summer has been dry it is best to wait for the rain to soften the soil before Planting. You can wait until the end of October to plant Daffodils and the end of October/November to plant Tulips, so write a reminder on your calendars to prompt yourselves. If you haven t got your bulbs yet you need to zap down to the Nursery or Garden Centre but they may not have the choice that you want at this late stage. If you plan carefully you can have bulbs for five months of the year. Starting in January (winter dependent) and into late spring. The art of bulb planting is to place them between herbaceous plants so that as they grow the receding bulb foliage is hidden from sight. This is the month of Dahlias, Asters, Hardy Fuchsias, Verbena Bonariensis, Rudbeckia and of course Sedums to flower. If you have any of these in your garden you are extending the flowering season at least until the first frost, offering insects more food. Medbourne 11 am 6 October followed by Harvest Lunch Great Easton 11 am 13 October followed by Harvest Lunch Blaston 6pm 13 October Evensong Stockerston 3pm 20 October Despite the long winter the blossom did well and we should be reaping the benefit of fruit laden trees. If the branches are bowing down they need to be supported before they break. You can use a fork/spade, stakes or using nylon rope to tie them to stronger branches, trunks or stakes. Good pruning in the winter for apples and pears or plums and cherries for summer should avoid problems like this. Alistairs Tip: Main crop Potatoes can start to be lifted now, if you cut off the haulm (stems) to 2 above soil level. It you can wait 10 days before lifting, the skins will harden before lifting drying and storing check for blemishes. 7 General Synod July 2013, held at York University (on a very hot sunny weekend!) A meeting of the House of Laity discussed Lay Ministry and Lay Discipleship. We were addressed by the National Chief Education Officer and Director of Ministry. Ideas from the floor included: Lay people need lay trainers: A campaign for readers: More online training: More respect and acknowledgment of the discipleship of those lay people with no title: Stop word training and use education. In his first presidential address(the text of which you can read online, not just the newspaper headlines!) the Archbishop of Canterbury said his first emphasis of his time as Archbishop would be for a renewal of prayer and Religious Communities. If we forgot everything else he said, please remember that. Women Bishops In order to help Synod talk afresh about the consecration of women as Bishops, facilitated group discussions took place throughout Saturday. We met in groups of about 20, and then divided again into groups of 4/5. It was good to speak openly in a group, with mixed views, and there was willingness by all to appreciate another viewpoint, something not always apparent in debate. We were asked to look at 4 options which the working group had presented to the House of Bishops as possible ways forward. On the Monday following the Synod we then debated the motion brought by the House of Bishops to adopt Option 1 of the 4 options. Option 1 recommends the simplest possible legislation, with a formal declaration by the House of Bishops. Nine amendments were put to the motion, two of which were accepted by the synod: with the addition of a mandatory grievance procedure for parishes in which diocesan bishops are required to participate urge that the process of facilitated conversations continue to be used at significant points in the formulation and consideration of the draft legislation The predicted time scale is for final approval in July or November Reference to the Dioceses will be included in the process. One of the five principles of this new way of proceeding is to ensure that all parts of the Anglican Church may flourish. We pray for the process to achieve this end. Good news for parishes Revised faculty rules were approved with the intention of simplifying the process of faculty applications. These will come into effect in January Debate on Safeguarding, following a report on the Chichester Diocese. Synod approved an unreserved apology of the CofE for its failure to protect children, young people and adults from physical and sexual abuse inflicted by its clergy and others, and for the failure to listen properly to those so abused. Safeguarding policies needed to be implemented by every parish and all clergy should receive training in safeguarding against incidences of sexual abuse. A scheme to unite the dioceses of Bradford, Ripon and Leeds and Wakefield was approved by Synod. Synodical Electoral Review was discussed - the composition of General Synod and the way in which the House of Laity is elected. Is there a better way than the present system? Time did not permit any decisions to be taken and the subject will return to Synod for further discussion. Anne Bloor (Lay Representative on General Synod) bloor@burtonovery.freeserve.co.uk 26 7

8 Our June walk was from East Carlton Country Park. Led by Brian, we headed South West passing through Wilbarston, before returning to East Carlton. A very pleasant walk enjoyed by all. A very small group braved the hot weather (quality if not quantity) for our July walk. Starting from Gretton we headed east towards Harringworth Lodge and alongside the very pretty lake and its population of wildfowl, passing the lodge we then headed North along the lane adjoining Spanhoe wood. We then returned to Gretton via a roughly parallel route to that of our outward journey. This is one of our richest areas for wildlife. Buzzards and Kites can always be seen and heard overhead and groups of deer can often be seen in the distance or dashing across the track in front of you. Hares and rabbits abound and the song of the larks is always with you. Our next walk will be on Wednesday 18th September meet at Great Easton Village Hall at All welcome but participants must be responsible for their own safety. A Big Thank you to Everyone who supported the Cakes sale at St Giles Church, Medbourne on 4 th August. It was a tremendous success and we raised in the end so a fantastic result. All those who contributed by donating cakes are very much appreciated. All of them looked so delicious and we were so thrilled to receive such a variety. We are also incredibly grateful to everyone who donated a Raffle prize, bought cakes and made a donation. Thank you so much for coming and I do hope nobody got caught in the rain afterwards! The money, cakes and raffle prizes donated has helped to raise money for the Phoenix Burns Project in South Africa. It does seem far away to support these children but as our vicar said in the sermon we should more for those who are less fortunate; If we are able to do something for others it is our responsibility to try to help them if we can. I have been to the Red Cross Children s Memorial hospital in Cape Town two years ago and I will travel there again in November. This part of our trip is as much of a challenge as the Hike and Bike event which is taking place to raise further funds for the charity. I have seen the conditions in which these children live where fires, burns and scalding are so common. Child burns victims have one of the highest fatality rates in Africa and it is extremely disturbing to see such little faces with huge disfigurements especially when we hear some of the stories of bullying and alienation just because of the way they look. We have raised 45,000 in the last two years for the charity and hope to raise a further 20,000 this year to go towards rehabilitation and fire prevention education. We also give a few teddy bears like the ones on display in the church so that when the children are discharged from the hospital they receive a bear for a little bit of comfort and mental stimulation. This is one of the small things we can do to help but it really does make a difference and you have helped me to achieve this! So THANK YOU once again. Best wishes from all the ABC (Action for Burns and Children) team. Ambassador Oil Heating Services Ltd Please visit our website for more information- or abc-challenge@crippssears.com. 9 A date for your diary A Christmas Coffee Morning will be held in Great Easton Village Hall on Saturday 30th November am - 12 noon Proceeds in aid of Church Funds MEDBOURNE PRE-SCHOOL/PLAYGROUP A NEW WAY FORWARD Medbourne Playgroup is pleased to announce that it is looking at a strategy for securing its long term viability. We are currently in talks with Bringhurst Primary School with regard to entering into some form of partnership with them. Both sides are keen on the idea of a merger of some sort and the school has agreed in principle that we should move onto their premises from September This development will be dependent on many approvals and consultations with various authorities. Playgroup will, therefore, continue to operate from Medbourne Village Hall until July 2014 to allow both Playgroup and the School the necessary time to reach a conclusion and manage the change. More details to follow in next magazine On Thursday 5th September our speaker will be Mrs Elisabeth Robinson, her subject being Family Fortunes. She will also bring a selection of her greetings cards which members will have the opportunity to purchase. Mrs E Clarke and Mrs S Kingston will provide the refreshments. Medbourne Playgroup has been operating since 1982 and has grown over the years into a very successful community led pre-school which gives our local children an excellent start and foundation for their Early Years Education. We have seen over 200 children come through our doors during this time, and it is a compliment to us that we can boast several 2 nd generation children! Times have changed somewhat in those years, and we are very aware that the requirements of the new generation of children and parents are substantially different from those who started with us in 1982! This proposed evolution of the playgroup will enable us to increase the service that we can provide and allow us to meet the needs of today s children and parents. We believe that this is an exciting way forward and opens up many new opportunities. The Playgroup is managed by a Committee of parents, ex-parents and local community members. We cannot operate without this support, nor will we be able to execute these changes without some extra help, so please do let one of us know if you are able to join the Committee or help in any way. So if you think you can help us in any way then please contact our chair of committee: Sam Tinton (Mrs) Tel; or e mail sam.hall9@btinternet.com GREAT EASTON AND VILLAGES WELCOMES WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP TRAINED HAIR STYLIST AND BEAUTY THERAPIST Philippa-Lee Cut and Styling from 28 Colouring/foils from 65 includes cut and styling Perming/Straightening from 65 includes cut and styling Styling tips and Hair Care advice complimentary. So warm that many of us, in between visiting the gardens and the garden centre, spent some time seeking shade or venturing into the shops to test the air conditioning. A number of our party took a boat trip across the lake followed by a leisurely and shaded walk back amongst the trees. A measure of the success of the day was perhaps to be judged by the armfuls of plants to be found on the coach home. Our thanks to all those who helped to organize the visit. After the Summer break it is now time to recommence our meetings in the village hall and we look forward to seeing our existing members, new members and visitors on Wednesday, 18 th September. MEDBOURNE PARISH COUNCIL Many thanks to everyone who exhibited, baked, helped out or came along to the Community Open Day on June 16 th! This was a very successful community event, with favourable comments from many who attended. All who exhibited were very positive and considered it to have been well worthwhile. Prior to the event the Village Directory was circulated to residents of Medbourne, the spare copies will be held by the clerk, to be given to people who move in to the village. If for any reason anyone did not receive a directory, please contact the clerk, Fiona Smith. The funds raised from the sale of refreshments were sufficient both to cover the cost of printing the directories and to make a donation to the Village Hall which was marvellous. A big thank-you also to the two new volunteers who came forward and offered to help out with mowing the towpath. The Parish Council would like to express their sincere appreciation and congratulations to Tom Price and his team, who did a magnificent job in organising the production of the directories and the Open Day itself. DATE & TIME OF NEXT PARISH COUNCIL MEETING: There was no meeting in August. The next meeting will take place on Monday 2 nd September at 7.45 in the Village Hall. Residents of the parish are most welcome to attend

11 We have two months for the price of one this time! Firstly I would like to thank our Programme Secretary for finding such a good replacement for our June meeting when we were let down at the last moment. We had a very enjoyable talk on Beauty and the Beast, Trekking in Nepal. Our speaker had been confronted by the destitution of many people and this prompted him to set up the charity "New Futures Nepal" to give refugee children support against child prostitution, floods and landslides. This talk showed the state of traffic in Kathmandu, where New Futures Nepal is based. We were taken through various stages of his trek, also showing the prayer wheels used in religious ceremonies. For the majority of the Nepalese Population, walking is the only way to get around. There was also a very well presented and thought out slide show to accompany the talk. Many thanks once again. We had Mr Nick Lewis from Harborough Theatre come and speak in July. What a very enthusiastic and knowledgeable man. He spoke about the beginnings of the theatre and the fact that it actually used to be a bike shed for the corset factory that was to eventually become the council offices in Adam and Eve Street. From very humble beginnings the theatre has progressed by using its own funding to purchase additional properties - one of which used to be the old public toilets - at no time have they had the assistance of loans but have always waited until they were in a position to pay for improvements themselves. These days they have companies coming from all over to perform and use the theatre for all sorts of activities including film shows and coffee mornings. We had a very interesting insight into what goes on at the theatre and thank Nick for his enjoyable talk. Our August meeting will see Mrs M Krone talking to us again - we all enjoyed her talk to us last year about being a Barrister. We meet on 14th August at 7.30p.m in the Village Hall and as usual visitors and new members would be most welcome to join us. Our competition for the month will be "a letter opener".
