The weather has been wonderful; Just enough rain and plenty of sun. Again, a special thanks to John Whisler for his legacy of making our golf course great, and to Lonny Radford, for now sustaining and improving our future. We are truly a year-round golfing club, thanks to these gentlemen and their crew. They are doing a lot of work this fall to condition our course for the winter season. They work around our play, so that your golf is uninterrupted. T h e b e n e fi t s o f m e m b e r s h i p e x t e n d s w e l l b e y o n d o u r c l u b. W e e n j o y twelve reciprocal membership relationships in Oregon, Washington and California that provide free golf to you. Easy trips out of town to locations such as Seattle, Salem, Tri-Cities, Eugene, Klamath Falls, and others offer a variety of golf experiences. Add to that our association with ClubCorp, and you receive member guest rates at clubs all around the country. Even non-golfers are welcomed into the facilities. As an example, I just took a 2- day trip to Seattle for a Mariners game and two rounds of golf. Golf was outstanding. Mariner game not so great. Better luck next year. I encourage you to enjoy your club. Bring your friends. We have a lot to offer. Check out the fall merchandise in the Pro shop. Chanelle found some great items. Coming up soon is a wine and food pairings dinner. Bingo returns in October. Check our website for all the events and activities. It is where to go to know all that is going on at the club. Thank you for responding to our club survey. Your rankings and written comments provided thoughtful input for improving what we offer. As always, feel free to bring any ideas and comments to our managers and/or Board members. We welcome your input. As always golfers, remember to fill any divots, fix any ball marks. It makes the course a better experience for those following. In this case, remember to pay it backwards. Finally, the board began the process of recruiting the new 2019 Board members. Board positions are open to any Proprietary member. The term is three years. I asked 5 former club presidents to form the nominating committee. They are Bob Knutsen, Mark Gustafson, Lynn Brigham, Russ Taggard, and Stanley Gott. If you are interested, please bring your name forward. It is a big responsibility, but it also carries great rewards. Thank you for your consideration. See you all at the Club! 3 MMANAGER MUSINGS ED LEINENKUGEL STAFF CLUB MANAGER Ed Leinenkugel CLUB PROFESSIONAL John Kawasoe SUPERINTENDENT Lonny Radford EXECUTIVE CHEF Gehrett Billinger MEMBERSHIP & MARKETING Kaylin Culver DINING ROOM & BANQUET MANAGER Tiffany Schraeder ACCOUNTANT Jessica Hinman ADMINISTRATION Amanda Aronhalt MANAGER MUSINGS The pace of life generally slows down in the fall, and sometimes there are even a few moments to reminisce on the past. While enjoying what I could of the FedEx Cup playoffs I was reminded as to why I love the game of golf, and why I enjoy watching the people who excel at the game. Golf has enriched my life and I have been privileged to meet some remarkable people thanks to my relationship with the game. Since golf is the star attraction at AGCC, I thought our members might appreciate my sharing a few of my reflections and experiences related to the game so many of us love. As I watched Bryson DeChambeau win the first two FedEx Cup playoff events, I flashed back to my time in Northern California, when Bryson s father, John, DeChambeau, was a business associate of mine. I owned my own golf shop then, and John was my Spalding golf rep. John, who s nickname was Shamu, was an excellent golfer, too, and won the Merced County Amateur at my home club, Merced GCC, beating dozens of the top amateurs in Northern California. At that time, John was a young father, with a son, Bryson, who was barely four years old. A mutual friend of ours, Mike Schy, was the Head Golf Professional at Belmont CC in the 1990 s, and a highly regarded instructor who became and continues to be, Bryson s instructor. I have known both John and Mike for 28 years, so Bryson s rise on the PGA tour has resonated with me. Earlier this year another young man from my past, Cameron Champ, won his first Web.com event, which secured his PGA tour card for Cameron, while still an amateur, finished 32nd at the 2017 US Open at Erin Hills. During my 7-year tenure as the Head Golf Professional at North Ridge CC, near Sacramento, CA, the club granted Cameron an honorary membership. At the time, Cameron was a 9-year old child golf prodigy, and I had the pleasure of playing a few rounds with Cameron while providing a few helpful golf tips along the way. My 1st Assistant was especially helpful with developing Cameron s swing. Also, while working at North Ridge, I had the pleasure of golfing with another of the club s honorary members, Kevin Sutherland. During that period, Kevin won his first PGA tour event, the World Match Play Championship at the La Costa Resort, and the club hosted a very memorable victory celebration for Kevin and his family. Kevin is a wonderful person, and I was excited for him when he won the Champion s Tour Charles Schwab Cup finale in Phoenix last year. Did you know that Sutherland is the only person to shoot a 59 or better on the PGA Champions Tour (he 3-putted the last hole, too)? Over 30 years ago, while working as a young assistant pro in Arizona I had the pleasure of golfing with PGA tour winners, Tom Weiskopf and Tom Purtzer. Weiskopf and Purtzer were both honorary members at White Mountain CC, in Pinetop, AZ, where I served as the 1st Assistant under Jack Bartko, now in the Arizona Golf Hall of Fame. Weiskopf and Purtzer had two of the better golf swings in the history of the game, and Purtzer s swing had just been voted the best swing on tour by his peers. White Mountain is Arizona s original mountain country club, and the membership once included former US Senator, Barry Goldwater, his brother, Bob (founder of the Phoenix Open), and the famous writer, the late Erma Bombeck. Weiskopf lived on the 8th hole and held the course record at WMCC (a 61). He rarely golfed at the club, preferring to fish or help his young daughter on the driving range, but on the rare occasions Weiskopf visited the shop, I would watch and listen in fascination as Weiskopf spoke with Jack about the golf design projects he was working on, including Loch Lomand (Scotland) and Troon CC. Although I only golfed with Weiskopf once, I played a half-dozen rounds with Purtzer, who never shot higher than 67. As impressed as I was with their golf skills, I particularly enjoyed getting to know them as human beings. A few years earlier, in 1982, I spent one winter working in Tucson, AZ, where I served as the Assistant Pro/Associate Caddy Master at Tucson Country Club. Greg Lindquist, the club s Head Professional, asked me to caddy for him after he qualified for the Tucson Open. The day before the Tucson Open started, Greg invited me to join he and Miller Barber (Mr. X ) for a practice round at Tucson CC. I was so nervous I could 3

4 MANAGER MUSINGS CONTINUED... barely get the ball airborne, but enjoyed the experience anyway. During the first two rounds of the tournament, Greg was paired with the legendary Gene Littler. I spent two memorable days inside the ropes observing one of the tour s great gentlemen, not to mention one of the better swings in the history of the game, from a front-row seat. Less than two months later, during baseball spring training in Tucson, I met two Hall-of-Fame baseball legends, Johnny Bench and Mike Schmidt, who golfed at Tucson CC. My jaw dropped when I saw how far they hit their tee-shots on the opening hole. Then again, considering the number of home runs they both hit in their outstanding careers, I should not have been surprised. Many of our AGCC members are likely familiar with Larry Wedgy Winchester, who lives in Gearhart. Wedgy was an amazing trick-shot artist who conducted numerous entertaining and memorable golf exhibitions on behalf of Ping Golf. His shows were legendary, and in 1984, Wedgy won the National Long Drive Championship on national television using a 60 ski pole as the shaft for his driver. In the winter of 1981, I worked at a 9-hole executive course, Country Meadows, in Peoria, AZ, and Wedgy was a close friend of my boss, Les Salisbury. Although the golf course wasn t particularly memorable, I was amazed by the caliber of golfers, including Wedgy, who played in our weekly razz skins games. The experience was a reminder that it wasn t so much the quality of the golf course but the camaraderie of the people that brings people together. To help my boss promote junior golf, Wedgy even convinced his friend, PGA tour star, Johnny Miller, to host a Johnny Miller Junior Clinic at our humble little 9-hole course. Miller did not disappoint, and it was remarkable that he squeezed the event into the tour s west-coast swing. Even more impressive: Miller won the Tucson Open and the LA Open within weeks of conducting our Junior Clinic. During that memorable winter I was privileged to play a few rounds around Phoenix with Wedgy, and soon discovered just how exceptional his golf game was. Two memories stick out: while playing a round at Sun City CC, Wedgy s drive on a par-5 came to rest beneath some low hanging tree limbs. Most golfers would have chipped the ball back into the fairway but not Wedgy. He crouched down on his knees, selected a fairway wood, and using a flatter, baseball swing, blasted his second shot 200+ yards down the fairway, setting up a birdie. Then during a round at Moon Valley CC, on his way to an impressive 68, Wedgy nonchalantly dropped his ball down on the 17th tee, and using his Ping laminated wood driver, hit a towering 280 yard drive off the deck straight down the middle of the fairway. You had to be there to appreciate just how remarkable that was. Thank you for indulging my fit of nostalgia. Now that I shared some of my stories I hope some of our members are compelled to share their golf stories with me. Given the colorful history of our club I know there are many great stories out there. Please send your stories to: ed@astoriagolf.com and I will share some in a future newsletter. Fairways & Greens! Ed Leinenkugel, Club Manager TTURF TALK LONNY RADFORD TURF TALK The golf calendar really slows down with the arrival of October. Our maintenance staff will be switching gears from routine golf maintenance to aerification in preparation of winter. The weather couldn t have been better these last few weeks and I am hopeful we still have several dry weeks to come. We completed aerification of the tees on the golf course during the last week of September. We will continue to slice, poke (19860) holes, and pull cores throughout the month of October and plan on beginning the greens on October 8th. Upon completion, the greens will be a bit sandier and not quite as smooth as they usually are; however, this should only last for a few days. This practice will promote healthy rooting and provide relief to the compacted soil from the constant golf and maintenance equipment traffic. The many techniques we use to aerify will allow large amounts of rain water to drain and is critical for the long-term health of the golf course. Happy October! Lonny Radford, Golf Course Superintendent 4

5 PPRO- NOUNCEMENTS JOHN KAWASOE PRO-NOUNCEMENTS I can t believe it s October. What a great year for golf and weather. Hopefully the sun keeps shining. October s Breakfast Club is the last chance for Halderman Cup Points. Breakfast Club will be October 7th. The Halderman Cup Finals are slated for October See John or Cody for more information. The Shop is gearing up for winter. Come by and check out our cold weather gear and rain gear. Winter gear is a great way to spend your Shop Credit. Please remember that you must spend you Golf Shop credit by December 31st. For those of you who want to make some adjustments to your game this winter, contact the Golf Shop Staff for Fall lessons. Don t forget about the hitting shed on the west end of the range. You can still practice on the not so nice days. From all of us in the Golf Shop thank you for a wonderful season. Hopefully the fall will bring some more great weather and the season can roll along. For those of you heading South stock up in the Golf Shop before you leave. From the Golf Shop crew we hope all your shots are long and true. See you on the links John Kawasoe, Head Golf Professional F FORE THE LADIES PEGGY DAWSON FORE THE LADIES September flew past with beautiful weather for the most part. Now as we head into October, we will wave goodbye to our fellow members who head for sunnier climes, only to return again in the late spring to begin another year of golf. We enjoyed our annual Field Day Event which was organized by Diana Butler, Jody Orrell and Susan Brown. Kudos to you Ladies for your quick action to put it all together for us along with prizes and taco salads for lunch. Well done and thank you. September also included a General Meeting with the main focus on the future of the Snack Shacks. Susan Brown led off the discussion with a presentation on the various options available to our membership. A very lively discussion followed with a vote taken as to whether or not to keep operating the Snack Shacks, which has proved challenging to manage and staff over the past 4 or 5 years. It has always been a huge task and extremely exhausting on the part of the person in charge. We all realized that it has given the Ladies Golf members an excellent means of raising an annual Scholarship in the amount of $2,000 to be given to the most deserving of the golf playing students prior to his or her start to their freshman year of college. Ultimately it was decided that it was time to give it up and move on to another means of raising the funds to continue with the Scholarship each year. The group unanimously voted to terminate our involvement. A committee was formed to review other options in addition to our Annual Budget which also includes the possible elimination of one or two Tournaments. Judging by comments received after the General Meeting, several members do not like the idea of letting them go. Stay tuned for more to follow, including the changes to the By-Laws put forth and agreed upon at the September meeting. Our Social Co-Chairs, Sara Carlson and Cheri McGowan have planned a Bingo Party/ Luncheon for us on Thursday, October 18th beginning at 11:30. Please call the office to make your reservation. Enjoy the October weather and see you on the Course. Peggy Dawson, Ladies Club President 5

11 CLUBCORP ALLIANCE WITH ASTORIA GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB As some of you may already know, your new ClubCorp benefits are now live! We have recently announced our exciting Alliance with ClubCorp and, in fact, have had such a positive response from members and potential members alike regarding the program. For those who are unsure about the program, we have created this letter to provide you information about the various benefits our Members will receive. Astoria Golf & Country Club now offers TWO levels of access to clubs within the ClubCorp Network. The base level is ClubBenefits, and there is an upgraded option called Signature Gold Unlimited. ClubBenefits is simply included with your Membership to our club, so you would not need to do anything else to enjoy these tremendous privileges. You should, however, read through the additional benefits that come with a Signature Gold Unlimited upgrade, as if you golf or travel at all, it makes a lot of sense. The details of ClubBenefits are as follows: CLUB BENEFITS Benefits and privileges at 300+ clubs in the ClubCorp Network GOLF Access to 2 rounds of golf per club, per month with preferred greens fee rates Ability to book tee times 14 days in advance Access to rental clubs, rental fees apply No access to clubs within the member s second home market where applicable No access to back to back tee time benefits DINING/SOCIAL Dining access to 2 meals per club per month, menu pricing applies No access to clubs within the member s second home market ATHLETIC Access to pool, athletic facilities, and tennis/racquetball courts 2 times per club per month, access fees apply LIFESTYLE Access to lifestyle benefits including the best tickets to sporting, concert, and theater events, special offers for experience packages including the Masters, US Open, Super Bowl, and access to preferred pricing on hotels, resorts, and transportation world wide Keep in mind that the above benefits will be available to our Members free of charge. However, if you should choose to upgrade to Signature Gold Unlimited you may do so for an initiation fee of $1,000 and $50 a month there after-which will be added to your statement. By upgrading to SIGNATURE GOLD UNLIMITED, the benefits then become: SIGNATURE GOLD UNLIMITED GOLF 2 complimentary greens fees per club per month, when you travel 30 day advance tee times when traveling Ability to book back to back tee times (for groups) when traveling Second home benefits in the area of second residence which include 2 complimentary greens fees per month for the entire home area (If there are multiple clubs in the home area you would have 2 free passes for the area, not per club) Complimentary use of Taylor Made rentals at ClubCorp owned clubs, when you travel DINING/SOCIAL 2 complimentary four-course meals at Dining/Business/Social clubs, when you travel Access to enjoy the work spaces, food and drink beyond the 2 free meals ATHLETIC 2 complimentary access passes to pool, athletic facilities, and tennis/racquetball courts per club per month when you travel LIFESTYLE Same benefits as ClubBenefits The Signature Gold Unlimited upgrade can be cancelled at any time without penalty, so if you are interested in the upgrade, we recommend taking advantage of the open enrollment to avoid paying the $1,000 initiation fee. Want to see the available properties and benefits? Check out: To make dining, social, athletic reservations or to book tee times at any of the clubs in the ClubCorp Network, contact the ClubLine at Or you can submit reservation form online.
