Nice crisp mornings and warm afternoons. I hope the weather favors us well into the fall. This month, John Whisler is giving up the reins of managing our golf course to Lonny Radford. Lonny has been transitioning for most of a year, absorbing as much knowledge as he can from John Whisler s experience. While Lonny is assuming day to day leadership beginning September 16, John will be staying around part time to work on a number of projects. So, full retirement for John is down the road a ways. The beautiful course we have today is entirely due to the vision of John Whisler. He has led his crew to make our course and practice facility, as far as I am concerned, the best in the Northwest. It has been a long planning process. Every year the course and grounds get better. When you see John, thank him for the legacy of the great golf experience he has created for all of us to enjoy. We have been so fortunate to have him lead our golf course management for so many years. What a great benefit for us that he has agreed to stay around on a part time basis to mentor the projects he sees as enhancing our golf course future. Thank you, John. Thank you to all of you who responded to the club survey. It has provided substantial information relative to golf and club operations. This data helps our managers and board provide better facilities and services reflective of member desires and needs. Get out there and enjoy our course. Bring your friends. Let them experience what we have to offer. Take advantage of all this good weather. It will go away for the winter soon enough. Although, I was told by a member that the winter is expected to be dryer and warmer than usual. I am choosing that option. See you at the club. 3 MMANAGER MUSING ED LEINENKUGEL STAFF CLUB MANAGER Ed Leinenkugel CLUB PROFESSIONAL John Kawasoe SUPERINTENDENT John Whisler EXECUTIVE CHEF Gehrett Billinger MEMBERSHIP & MARKETING Kaylin Culver BANQUET MANAGER Tiffany Schraeder ACCOUNTANT Jessica Hinman ADMINISTRATION Amanda Aronhalt MANAGER MUSING It has been an interesting year, to say the least. The hot weather east of the coast range meant milder, cooler, cloudier weather on the Coast, and the fires burning throughout the West resulted in numerous days of smoky skies and unhealthy air alerts for much of Oregon. Fortunately, the Oregon Coast seemed to miss out on the worst of this recent weather pattern, and although our summer could have been a bit warmer and sunnier, we were blessed with numerous dry and comfortable days well-suited to golfing your ball around the Clatsop Plains. September is generally one of the best months of the year, so now is the time to squeeze in a few more rounds of golf followed by a scrumptious dinner before the winter rains return. I generally prefer to look forward than back, but in this case, I wish to compliment and acknowledge everyone involved with both the Men s and Women s Member Guest tournaments in August. Thanks to the dedication and hard work of volunteers and staff, both events came off especially well, and members and guests raved about virtually everything associated with the events. The consensus was both events were the finest in recent memory. Well done everyone! Looking ahead, we have our traditional fall member and guest golf and dining events at the club featuring the Lyder Cup, WOGS and Beefeater folks. The additional activity is a great thing for the club, however it means you will want to plan ahead when making golf and dining reservations. Kaylin Culver, our Membership & Marketing Director will be taking maternity leave later this month, so please know that most marketing and membership matters will be handled by myself, Chanelle Kunde (golf shop) and Amanda Aronhalt (admin). Kaylin will be on leave for approximately two months, so the three of us will jump in to assist with prospective members, marketing events, and communicating club news. Save the date: On Saturday, October 20, the club is hosted a wine dinner featuring Sineann Wines. The dinner will be limited to the first 32 members to sign-up. We will promote more about the event, including the dinner menu and wines later this month. We will also publish the menu in the October newsletter. Lastly, I want to thank our members for taking the time to complete the recent member survey. We had 140 members participate, and as a result, the club received valuable input to not only assess how our members feel the club is doing, but also important and welcome feedback to guide our decision making going forward. We intend to follow up with a few more surveys that focus specifically on certain areas of club operations, so please know that you will have other opportunities to share comments and recommendations. See you at the club! Ed Leinenkugel Club Manager Save the Date! Saturday, SAVE October THE 20th DATE! Sinnean Saturday, Wine Dinner October 20, 2018 Sineann Wine Dinner 5 courses - $80 per person This event is not for the faint of palate 3

4 PPRO- NOUNCEMENT JOHN KAWASOE PRO-NOUNCEMENTS September already? I guess time really does fly when you re having fun. Congratulations to Larry and Jake Wobbrock. They are the 2018 Member-Guest Champions. Thank you to all who participated in the Men s Member Guest. A great time was had by all. We had another successful year of Junior Golf. Thank you to Todd Barnes, Russ Taggard, and Jim Poetsch, all their help. Thanks to Bradley Young, Cody Mullins, and Sam Hinton as well. All these folks did a great job. Thank you to all of our Juniors and their parents and grandparents. All the support is greatly appreciated Congratulations to Larry Veltman and Walter Yeaw, Champions of the Mid Summer Classic. Thank you to everyone who played. I d like to give out a HUGE THANK YOU to Dr. Herb Semler and his wife Shirley. They have graciously donated a new defibrillator. It will be in the Ladies restroom on #4. God forbid we need to use it, but we have a brand new one on the course. Thank you very much Herb and Shirley. December 31st is right around the corner. That is the date that you must use all your Golf Shop credit. Credit can be used for merchandise in the shop, special orders, and lessons. Fall is a great time to make changes in your game. Give the Golf Shop a call to schedule a lesson. Hopefully, September will bring some nice weather. The Golf Course is in great shape, and fall golf is the best. From the Golf Shop crew, we hope all your shots are long and true. See you on the links, John Kawasoe MMARKETING MINUTE KAYLIN CULVER MARKETING MINUTE Membership satisfaction is a huge focus for us at AGCC. We recently published a brief membership survey that allowed us to ask some general satisfaction questions about the club. Thank you to those who took part in the survey-it is nice to see such a positive response from the membership as well as constructive advice we can grow from. Now that the summer months are winding down we will be making modifications to accommodate our winter operations. With these modifications come another opportunity to leave valuable feedback regarding events and activities you would like to see from AGCC. To take part in this second survey simply go to astoriagolf.com and find the survey under the membership tab. We also ended our open enrollment for ClubCorp and want to congratulate those who signed up! We felt giving the gift of golf is something many will benefit from not only when they are at the club but while they are away! As Ed mentioned in his column, I will be out on Maternity Leave shortly. For the time being, all membership and marketing matters will be forwarded to our amazing team here at AGCC. If you have any questions please feel free to reach out to Ed Leinenkugel. Thank you for your continued support and I look forward to my return! Kaylin Culver Membership & Marketing Director 4

5 FFORE THE LADIES PEGGY DAWSON FORE THE LADIES August was a very hectic month. It was the Annual Member Guest Tournament on the 20th and 21st of the month. After months of fretting over this to make everything just right, it happened. It was a wonderful event culminating in the coming together of great guests, extra terrific food prepared by Chef Gehrett and his staff, Ed Leinenkugel for his excellent photography skills on the team photos for all the members and their guests and last but not least, all the preparation and decorating for each dining experience during the two day event, put together by Tiffany and her staff. I would like to personally thank Susan Brown and Karen Radditz for all of their hard work in helping me to be able to put this on. The winners for Low Gross of the Field were Betsy Furrer and her guest, Joan Heeter. The winners for the Low Net of the Field were Kathy Roos and Luanne Fordney. Congratulations Ladies! You may view all of the results in the freshly decorated Ladies Locker Room. Earlier in the month, the Golf and Luncheon for the Past Presidents and Past Golf Chairs was hosted by Karen Radditiz and Betsy Furrer. It was a very nice event and a special thanks to Inarose Zuelke along with her daughter Janet, Molly Edison and Gretchen O Connell for making an extra effort to join the group. A nice time was had by all. Several pictures from both events are included in this newsetter. Now on to September with the Annual Field Day Tournament and General Meeting to be held on September 4th. We hope that anyone who wishes to have a fun golf experience to call the Pro Shop and join us. See you on the Course! Peggy Dawson Ladies Club President Past Presidents - Golf Chairs Luncheon 5

6 TTURF TALK LONNY RADFORD TURF TALK Although we experienced a few smoky days in August, it has been mild in comparison to other areas in the state and throughout the country. I feel lucky to be here on the North Oregon Coast and out of the extreme heat this summer. September will be another busy month for golf events and I am hopeful that the weather will cooperate and give us another great month of golfing conditions. A few areas on the golf course are becoming very thin due to dry conditions and heavy cart traffic. A good example of this is between the front tee and the fairway on #9. We have placed several signs in areas like this to encourage carts to avoid these thinner areas. We will begin some of our fall aerification during the last week of September and punching holes in compacted traffic areas will be first on the list. The more intrusive aerification practices will not begin until October. We will communicate with the pro shop regarding timing, etc., as well as include any updates in next month s newsletter. I look forward to another excellent month of golf here on the coast! Please remember to fill out a work order notifying our mechanic if you plan on being out of the area this winter so that he can put your golf cart on the snow bird list. 11 CLUBCORP ALLIANCE WITH ASTORIA GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB As some of you may already know, your new ClubCorp benefits are now live! We have recently announced our exciting Alliance with ClubCorp and, in fact, have had such a positive response from members and potential members alike regarding the program. For those who are unsure about the program, we have created this letter to provide you information about the various benefits our Members will receive. Astoria Golf & Country Club now offers TWO levels of access to clubs within the ClubCorp Network. The base level is ClubBenefits, and there is an upgraded option called Signature Gold Unlimited. ClubBenefits is simply included with your Membership to our club, so you would not need to do anything else to enjoy these tremendous privileges. You should, however, read through the additional benefits that come with a Signature Gold Unlimited upgrade, as if you golf or travel at all, it makes a lot of sense. The details of ClubBenefits are as follows: CLUBBENEFITS Benefits and privileges at 300+ clubs in the ClubCorp Network GOLF Access to 2 rounds of golf per club, per month with preferred greens fee rates Ability to book tee times 14 days in advance Access to rental clubs, rental fees apply No access to clubs within the member s second home market where applicable No access to back to back tee time benefits DINING/SOCIAL Dining access to 2 meals per club per month, menu pricing applies No access to clubs within the member s second home market ATHLETIC Access to pool, athletic facilities, and tennis/racquetball courts 2 times per club per month, access fees apply LIFESTYLE Access to lifestyle benefits including the best tickets to sporting, concert, and theater events, special offers for experience packages including the Masters, US Open, Super Bowl, and access to preferred pricing on hotels, resorts, and transportation world wide Keep in mind that the above benefits will be available to our Members free of charge. However, if you should choose to upgrade to Signature Gold Unlimited you may do so for an initiation fee of $1,000 and $50 a month there after-which will be added to your statement. By upgrading to SIGNATURE GOLD UNLIMITED, the benefits then become: SIGNATURE GOLD UNLIMITED GOLF 2 complimentary greens fees per club per month, when you travel 30 day advance tee times when traveling Ability to book back to back tee times (for groups) when traveling Second home benefits in the area of second residence which include 2 complimentary greens fees per month for the entire home area (If there are multiple clubs in the home area you would have 2 free passes for the area, not per club) Complimentary use of Taylor Made rentals at ClubCorp owned clubs, when you travel DINING/SOCIAL 2 complimentary four-course meals at Dining/Business/Social clubs, when you travel Access to enjoy the work spaces, food and drink beyond the 2 free meals ATHLETIC 2 complimentary access passes to pool, athletic facilities, and tennis/racquetball courts per club per month when you travel LIFESTYLE Same benefits as ClubBenefits The Signature Gold Unlimited upgrade can be cancelled at any time without penalty, so if you are interested in the upgrade, we recommend taking advantage of the open enrollment to avoid paying the $1,000 initiation fee. Want to see the available properties and benefits? Check out: To make dining, social, athletic reservations or to book tee times at any of the clubs in the ClubCorp Network, contact the ClubLine at Or you can submit reservation form online. Full details and forms can be found by clicking on the ClubLine link.
