4 Fifty Years! Adan Daoud shows the certificate honoring 50 years of marriage to his wife Patricia. Don Nadell and his wife, Bonnie, have been married 50 years. Several couples celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2008 and most of them received commemorative certificates at the Christmas lunch. Adan Daoud and Don Nadell received their certificates at the February lunch. February Speakers Golf Players Of The Month (February) Jim Long (left) and Bill Schlaefer (middle) received certificates of appreciation from Big SIR John Feemster. Our members learned a lot about the sport of Bocce at the February Luncheon from a presentation that is a project of Bill Schlaefer with support from Jim Long, members of Branch 139. Bill gave a very informative talk while Jim served as laptop/projector operator. The presentation covered several aspects of the sport of Bocce including the history of the sport, the rules of the game, and video highlights from the world championship singles tournament held outside of Detroit Michigan in Also included were excerpts from tournaments held at the Campo di Bocce facility at Livermore, California in SIR Happenings presents SIR news at the state level and also includes interesting stories from SIR Branches. The February edition is now available on the SIR website, (L. to R.) Doug Wood, Gene Plevyak, Jon Goldsworthy, Chuck Waggoner. 5 NON-RESPONSIBILITY CLAUSE: All tours and other activities arranged for Sons in Retirement, Inc. through its branches and committees are for the convenience and pleasure of members and guests who desire to participate. However, Sons In Retirement, Inc. and its Branches do not assume any responsibility for the well -being or safety of the participants or passengers or their property in any matters pertaining to said tours and other activities. Members and their guests participate at their own risk, and should not expect to hold Sons In Retirement, Inc. or any of its Branches responsible in any way. SIR WESTGATE BRANCH #125 MARCH 2009 Daryl Jones - Editor 1417 Gaucho Ct. San Jose, CA TRAVEL WITH SIR TRIPS FOR THE MONTH: There were no trips scheduled or completed for the month of January. NEW TRAVEL BROCHURES: A new tour of the "Archipelago of the San Juan Islands" is scheduled for the month of September The travel brochures are in process for distribution to the branches. Other trips in process are The "Rose Parade" for December 31, 2009 to January 4, 2010 and the popular annual "Beach Blanket Babylon" trip schedule for December 9, February is the month that the SIR Area 5 & 20 travel committee determine the tour escorts and major tours planned for It takes a few months of planning and scheduling before the final tour details are worked out and the new brochures are issued to the branch groups. TOUR INFORMATION: The "Southwest Treasures" trip scheduled for April 29 to May 5, 2009 has been canceled. The Savannah and Charleston tour has become a guaranteed trip with departure on April 28 and return on May 5, This is an example of the effort that SIR and the Travel Agency make when we do not get enough people signed up for a SIR coordinated trip. In this case we did not achieve the required quantity of participants for the original coordinated SIR trip date of April A number of the original SIR participants elected to join a standard (non SIR) group going on the same trip at a later date with the same original Travel Agency. Continue to contact the original SIR escorts if you have any questions concerning the Savannah trip. SIR and the participating Travel Agency always make every effort to achieve a successful trip. HAPPY TRAVELS - Alan Patmore, Travel Chairman A Hole-In-One! On February 3rd, Henry Melin was playing in a golf league with his wife, Sharon, at Sunken Gardens. Henry thought he had hit a pretty good shot on the par three eighth hole using a 6 iron, but he wasn t exactly sure where his ball ended up. Sharon s tee shot didn t make the green, but she chipped in for a birdie. Henry yelled, Great shot!, and went to the green to retrieve her ball. When he reached into the cup, he found two balls; one was Sharon s and the other was his! A surprise hole-in-one! SIR Westgate Branch 125 MARCH 2009 Page 5
