No Images? Click here SLC NEWSLETTER 14 DECEMBER 2018 Golf Results A total of 16 players contested last Thursdays Twilight competition. John Vlahiotis with a 9 Hole total of 20 Stableford points was the winner, holding off Davin Frankel who scored 19. The December Melbourne City Lexus Monthly Medal was the prize the 119 entrants were vying for on Saturday. The field made the most of the calm conditions with lots of great scores being posted. With a fantastic score of 68 Nett (66 (-6)Gross!), Brent O Donoghue took out A Grade, and in the process also collected The Eagles Nest Presented by The Foot Clinic, by holing his second shot on the 15th Hole. John Hunter showed that the lessons with DV have been paying dividends by claiming C Grade with a Nett 72. Winning B Grade and the December Medal was Eugene Korbut with a terrific Nett 67. Well done Eugene!

The Pro Pin bounty on the 6th Hole was claimed by Terry Moore with a great shot to 130cm, and in doing so collected the $108 prize. Sundays Men Individual Par event had a solid turn out of 107 players. David Rowdy Warrack claimed A Grade bragging rights with a great score of +5, playing off a 6 handicap. Theo Hourmouzis had the day s best score with an astonishing +9 to win B Grade, and Mick Roper claimed C Grade honours with +7 on the day. Wayne Gilmore added $99 to his Golf Shop account by winning the Pro Pin on the 2nd Hole. The Womens Monthly Medal for December was also up for grabs on Sunday. A big congratulations goes to Wendy Luckins who won the day with a Nett 70. Each of the 12 most recent Monthly Medal winners were eligible to compete in the playoff for the 2018 Medal of Medalists which was held over the weekend. Congratulations go out to our 2018 winners, Daniel Saykan and Joanne Tey. There was an unbelievable turn out for another edition of the Sanctuary lakes Vets competition on Monday, with 46 Ladies & Men taking part. The competition of the day was a 4BBB Stableford. Allan Richardson & Graeme Glasson couldn t be more of a perfect pair winning the day with an impressive score of 51 points between them. David Macdonald & Ralph Strong came in second with 49 points. George Hamilton won the Pro Pin on 2 taking $46 into his account. Tuesday marked the playing of the Ladies Christmas Lunch and Golf Day. The 9 Hole Ambrose event was played in great spirits and everyone enjoyed themselves thoroughly. The winners of the day were Judy Seedsman, Mariko Suvoltos and Jan McCormack with a score of 30 2/3, narrowly shading Lorraine Jennings, Vickee Lynch, Serene Fahey and Bronwyn Rodda by the smallest of margins.

Vets Christmas Luncheon January 1 Rule Changes January 1 sees the bringing in of a number of rule changes as decreed by the R&A through Golf Australia. For example, as of January 1 you will only have 3 minutes to find your golf ball before it is declared lost. Also you will not have to remove the flag stick when putting on the green. Both rule changes are designed to speed up play!

A new Player s edition of the Rules of Golf is available at the pro shop, along with a flyer that summarises the main changes. CLICK HERE TO VIEW BIGGER

Christmas Gift Ideas A multitude of gifts are available in the Golf Shop for the golfer in your life, or yourself. Free gift wrapping service is available with each purchase!

North West Pennant Expressions of Interest We are looking for players to represent SLC in this season s North West Pennant. Open to players with GA handicaps from 4.5 to 36, the 5 rounds begin on January 13th with couple of the rounds here at home and away games throughout the competition. If interested put your name down on the sheet posted on the scorer s table. Surfcoast and Bellarine Vets Golfing Tour Report In near perfect weather in the middle of November, 25 golfing aficionados ventured south to play lovely courses in the Bellarine/Surfcoast region. The Sands, Anglesea, 13th Beach, Portarlington, Clifton Springs, and Curlewis all were presented in pristine condition, and each presented unique challenges. It would have to be said that the golf courses won the battle but many fine performances were still recoded. Players came and went during the week but the Marathon Men were undoubtedly Glen Lamperd, resplendent in his beige and off white golfing attire, and the indomitable Kiwi Alan Paterson. As well as 20 players from Sanctuary Lakes, special guests including ex International cricketer, Ian Redpath; AFL Footballer, Barry Davis; and several sportsmen from Geelong region, added to the experience for us all.

Most of the folk from The Sanctuary were regular Vets' players but it was pleasing to see Judy Seedsman dusting off her sticks and getting into the swing of things and join us at 13th Beach. Fortuitously or appropriately, the Seedsman s were awarded the free game at 13th Beach as a reward for Judy digging up her clubs from the depths of the garage, and Alan for being a part of the winning Left Handed team. With regards the latter, a protest was lodged against Phil Cartledge s qualification as a left hander, on behalf of the disgruntled losers from the right handed group. After considerable research which included contact with the Boston Red Sox, it was deemed that Phil is a natural left hander who uses a left handed grip when playing golf. Above all, it was felt that a player should not be discriminated against because only right handed clubs were available to them in their youth! The fact that Phil was playing well and ended up on my side as a result of this decision, had no bearing on his selection in the leftie team! Each person who attended, brought along a prize to the value of around $10, serious or otherwise. Such prizes were presented to the good performers and to those who may have exhibited some unusual golfing behaviour. Such 'novelty prizes' included some of the following: Day 1 - wooden spoon to Neil Fitzpatrick - he liked it so much he refused to pass this on to similarly gifted performers on subsequent days. - SLOW Play critics or fast play addicts, Kevin Birtles. Alan Paterson and Phil Cartledge were given a Rubik cube, Stress ball and an array of rose petals to help them deal with players who, God forbid, hit their ball into the rough or even had the temerity to have more shots than par on a given hole. - Most colourful outfit went to Bronwyn Rodda for her imported pink golf shoes. - The 'I saw nothing Steve Smith sandpaper' award was given to the player most likely to want to gain an advantage by altering the flight characteristics of the golf ball - One Peter Cox. - The wandering buggy award - who else but Alan Paterson who when visiting a toilet at Clifton Springs was urged by teammates to stop his remote controlled (?) buggy from plunging over the cliff and scooting across the bay to the You Yangs! - The Bunker destroyers - a joint award to Glen L for getting into every bunker, to Phil and Neil Fitz for fluky extraction of their golf balls from a bunker. - 'The piece de resistance' award went to Garry Rodda for scoring in one round all of the following Stableford scores - 0 points, 1,2 3 4 and a 5 pointer. Might get him in Guinness book of records for that. The top performers on each day were as follows: Anglesea

1. Phil Cartledge 2. KD 3. Alan Paterson 13th Beach 1. Phil ' the holder of the blue Jacket and I'm not giving it up easily ' Cartledge 2. Garry Rodda 3. KD Portarlington Ambrose Team event 1. Alan Paterson/ Lorraine Jennings/ Ann Hawker 2. KD/ Bruce Hawker/ Neil Fitzpatrick Curlewis Stableford With 0.5 stroke for putts less than one putter grip length Equal 1. Garry Rodda, John McCormack 3. Phil Cartledge 4. Kevin Birtles The top 6 placing's for the Blue Jacket were as follows (average scores in brackets): 1. Garry Rodda (37.25) 2. Phil Cartledge (36) 3. Kevin Birtles (35.75) 4. John McCormack (34.75) 5. Ken Davis (33.3) 6. Graeme Glasson (32)

Congratulations to Garry and a special mention to the 2nd place getter Phil who not only nearly defended his title but was outstanding in his positive attitude and enthusiasm so close to his impending surgery. Speedy recovery from us all Phil. The top 3 place getters for the Blue scarf for the ladies were as follows: 1. Jan McCormack (30) Equal 2. Bronwyn Rodda, Lorraine Jennings (26.75) Venetian Masquerade Ball
