1 March Newsletter Sponsored by Hansen Design & Print Ararat Please support our sponsors. Bistro Update We have two very exciting announcements regarding our bistro: The name of the new bistro will be Chally s Bar & Bistro. This name identifies with our members and the local community as everyone knows the club as Chally, as well as reflecting the new operations under club management. The second but by no means less important is the appointment of our new Head Chef - Tim Andrew (yes we now have two Tim s!). Tim has a wealth of experience in club bistro s, function catering and management in large businesses. A fantastic acquisition for Chally. The renovations are progressing well with the ceiling and dome painted, new lights and a couple of wall alterations completed. We still have a fair bit to complete and are hoping to have the finished product by mid May. Our designer has come up with some excellent colour and décor recommendations which will give the room a completely new look and feel. We will keep this under wraps to generate a wow factor once its finished. In the mean time the bistro will commence business in the Members Bar under Tim A s control on Thursday April 17th so please come along and taste our new menu. The new menu is just about finalised and will be ed out to all members shortly. An article will appear in the Ararat / Stawell paper this Friday with more information. Committee News The following items of business were discussed at the March General Committee Meeting: The upgrade to the power supply is being re-costed and will be a priority in our coming budget The dress code was reviewed and agreed that the current policy is satisfactory however is being ignored by some members. The enforcement of our dress code will be raised with the offenders and rectified. A suggestion to relocate our honour boards from the committee room to create a Hall of Fame in the passage was supported. Sub-committees will be consulted about this. The Strategic Plan progress was discussed and due to time constraints the next stage was put back to April. New Members Peter Hawkins - Country B Mark Dadswell - Provisional Ellen Pollock - Junior Merv Hobbs - Ordinary Please take the time to introduce yourself to our new members and make them feel welcome.
2 Page 2 Golf News Anyone know the smoker in this cartoon? March Monthly Medal went to John Berg with nett 66 from Terry Hinch on nett 68. Well its been on the cards for a while but we ve had a changing of the guard at Chally with our Club Championships for 2014 run and won. Winner of the inaugural William Harricks Memorial Cup is Andrew Maconachie. Andy shot 3 fine rounds of for a 54 hole total of 220 giving him the championship by 9 shots from title holder Michael Harricks. Also thanks are due to the Harricks Family for the impressive new cup soon to be adorning our revamped reception area. It is a fitting memorial to a fine gentleman and an avid supporter of our club over many years both in golf and bowls. Thanks to all participants. We saw some good field numbers over the 3 weeks, and it was also good to see so many stay back for presentations each week. Your continued support is good for our club. Below is the Pennant Draw once again and we desperately need numbers for our Division 3 team. While getting away to a fair start with our home game, going down narrowly to Ballarat 4 and 3 we had to forfeit our match at Bacchus Marsh due to lack of numbers. One player from seven is disappointing to say the least. We re playing Midlands at Ballarat next Saturday 6 th April so travel is minimal and the club will subsidise a percentage of your fuel bill if you take other players. Please contact myself or the club if you can play, we really need your support. Congratulations too, to Gary, Lachie and Jeremy for the fantastic effort over the summer and autumn for the presentation of the course. Despite damage from birds, kangaroos and drought, we are still able to enjoy such a high class facility here. Thanks guys. 3 Page 3 A Message from President Geoff On Thursday 3rd, the 1st round of the Ballarat Vets Championships was played at Chalambar and 101 players took part. We provided coffee etc before and after and thanks to John for his help. Quite a few of the golfers indicated that they would be back to play in our Triangular Tournament on Easter Tuesday. That of course is a major event, so we are hoping for decent weather and a large field. Thanks again to Noela, Gwen and Margaret for their help towards the last monthly luncheon which I think was enjoyed by all. Congratulations to the various grade winners of the Championships and a particular mention to David Haddow for winning the Vets handicap, amongst a heap of other prizes. I would just like to say that Gary and his team have the course in great shape in very difficult conditions. The following Saturday we journeyed to Warracknabeal for the Group final (all group games have only 3 rinks). Playing St Arnaud first up we managed to win by 8 shots overall. In our second game we played Hopetoun and won a little easier. The final game was against Coglan Park from Horsham who had also won their 2 games. After a very tight contest Chally rallied and managed to retain the Shield. We will now represent the district s Group 3 at Barham on May 2 nd, 3 rd and 4 th. Sixteen teams from across Victoria will compete in this state final of the Bowls Victoria State Saturday Pennant. Roger Young and Gary Todd will also represent the Group in the pairs final playing at Bendigo on April 13 th and 14 th.
