NEWSLETTER MAY 2010 Assisted by the Office of Sport and Recreation through the Tasmanian Government s Community Support Levy May Rally This rally will be held at Bruce and Katrina Archer s property Chester on Sunday 18th April. Entry to the property is from Westwood Road See map below. On reaching the property, take the right hand side driveway, go past the sheds and follow the road down onto the river flats. The rally will be held on the picturesque Meander River. Gear check is 10.00am for a prompt start at 10.30am sharp. Please don t be late. If you are unable to make the rally, please phone Karina before Thursday on mobile or karina.julian@bigpond.com Chief Coach s Report This rally will be quite small compared to usual with games the following day, and olders riders turning their horses out over winter, we will really only enjoy the company of our younger riders this month. For some of the older riders on the day, Theresa will be running campdrafting up in the cattle yards and our younger riders will enjoy a fun day with Carolyn White and our very own Elizabeth Temple. Having so few at the rally will mean everyone will need to chip in a helping hand, so please come and see either myself or Dimity and ask if you can do anything. 2 From the DC Thank you to Bruce and Katrina Archer for hosting the April rally at their lovely property Chester. Bruce and Katrina have been TPRC members for many years and have had four children ride as Club members. As the Archer family move on from Pony Club, this will be one of our last opportunities to ride at Chester and we extend our heartfelt thanks to Bruce and Katrina and their family for their dedication and support of the Club and also to Katrina who has acted as DC and President of the Club for a number of years. Coaches- Erin Bowman and Barry Harper We wish our teams every success at the Championships and hope that as many Club members can go along and show their support for our riders. Zone Games Zone games will be held at West Tamar Pony Club, Edinburgh Park, Gravelly Beach on Sunday 16 th May and T.P,R.C. has two teams entered, they are A division team Erin Bowman, Reanna Bowman, Emily Hirst, Jacalyn Harvey, Skye Ranicar, Isobel Gibson and A reserve Alanna Stubbs Zone Composite team Charlotte Youngman, Emma Cowling, Daryna Carter Coaches- Erin Bowman and Barry Harper We wish our teams every success at the Championships and hope that as many Club members can go along and show their support for our riders. Welcome We also welcomed at the April rally, three new riders who were experiencing the first of their 3 trial rallies, they were Chloe McFarlane, Kelsey Lawrence and Zac Hingston. These three young riders were very enthusiastic and our members look forward to sharing their pony club experience with them. Congratulations Congratulations to Alice Hirst and Katherine Temple who recently completed a 40km ride at Pipers River in preparation for their K test later in the year. Reminder to Riders At the recent Northern Zone PC meeting the issue of riders presenting late for dressage tests etc was raised. Clubs are concerned that riders competing in ODEs, Dressage and SJ competitions etc are not presenting at their allocated time or number order for tests and then arriving at the arena late and expecting to be able to ride out of order. This is frustrating for organisers who generally have large numbers of riders whom they wish to keep flowing smoothly so that everyone can finish on time at the end of the day. Please keep in mind that you must advise organisers at events that you are running late for a genuine reason and that you are then prepared to ride at the time advised by the organisers/marshallers. At ODES etc Clubs will now have the option of eliminating riders who do not present for tests after being called to ride at their allocated time.

Active Riding Tops have Arrived TPRC Newsletter May 2010 For those who ordered active riding tops, they have arrived. Karina will have them at the rally so if you wish to collect them please have the correct money., in an envelope with your name and amount written on the front. Tops cannot be collected without payment. Treasurer Pip will not be at the rally so there will be no change. The cost of tops is $35 with name embroidered on the front and $30 with no name. The following riders ordered tops with name: Morgan Mitchell; Laura and Alice Chalmers; Emily van Galen; Charlotte Youngman and Chloe McFarlane. Those who ordered tops with no name embroidered are: Zoe Butler; Erin Bowman; Annie Bowman; Alana Stubbs; Alice Hirst; Emily Hirst; Bethany Hirst; Daryna Carter; Emma Cowling; Eliza Hudson, Max Glover; Tommy Glover; Madeleine Pearn. Reminder to riders A reminder to riders who have dressage, eventing and showjumping trophies to return them to Phyliss ASAP so presentations can be made to riders for the 2009/10 season at the June rally. Remember to have the trophies clean and engraved. Pony Club Nationals Anyone wishing to place an expression of interest for the 2011 Pony Club Nationals is reminded these need to be to Sue de Kaste State Treasurer, by 30th June. Tasmania will have the opportunity to send six juniors and six seniors in each of the Olympic disciplines and five junior and five senior mounted games riders. For the Olympic disciplines, riders need to be competing at Grade 1 level to gain qualifications for eventing and showjumping and elementary level for dressage. Starting heights for the first round of showjumping for juniors is 1.05m and for seniors 1.10m. Eventing heights for both junior and senior is 1.05m. The expression of interest does not require you to be qualified at this stage, it will simply give an indication of who may be interested so that you receive a continual feed of information as it becomes available A very big thank you to the Bruce and Katrina Archer for the use of their property Chester for the April Rally. TPRC is very fortunate to have the use of some wonderful properties for its rallies and we are ever grateful to the property owners for their generosity. Good luck to our games riders who will be competing at northern zone games on Sunday 16th May. Teams will be vying for a place at the State Games competition at the end of the month.

Walters Van Galen Canteen Roster May For May there is no need to bring onions, cake or coleslaw. Remember, if you can t do canteen it is up to you to find a replacement. There seems to be a little confusion regarding uniforms. All riders must in the first instance, purchase the full pony club uniform ie gold jumper, white shirt and gold tie. Even our youngest riders need to have this uniform as they need it when they sit their D test at age 7 and for club presentation at camp. The rugby jumper and active riding top are optional extras only. To ex TPRC member and current coach, Erin Pitt, who has qualified to compete with Cavallo Park Appollo at the Melbourne Three Day Event at Werribee in June Wet Weather Policy With winter approaching don t forget the wet weather policy: Rallies will NOT be cancelled in the morning unless there is an electrical storm. Parents should not ring to find out if the rally will go ahead, but if you decide you are not going to attend due to the wet weather, please let Karina know ASAP. The rally may be cancelled during the day if necessary. In the case of an electrical storm, the DC and CC will confer. If the rally is cancelled everyone will be notified by text by 9am which means the rally start time may need to be delayed. Notice Board Riders, Reminder particularly those new to the Club should be aware that when horses are tied to the float it is pony club rules that: Your horse must be tied to baling twine Your float must be attached to a vehicle. No Horses near canteen A Note to all riders Please keep your horses, big or small, away from the canteen area as it can be dangerous with horses around the area where people are gathering Reminder All Committee Members.. At the beginning of each rally, please report to the caravan to help unpack and set up for the rally and the start of the day

Test Co ordinator s Report TPRC Newsletter May 2010 Congratulations to Jude Gibson who is the Club s new Test Co Ordinator. If you have any queries regarding tests, please talk with Jude. Although she is only new to the position, she will find out the information you require and come back to you. Alice, Katherine, Laura and Elizabeth, you are reminded that your written papers for your K/C* tests will be sat on the last Sunday in June, which this year will be 27th. K candidates need to ensure your workbooks are up to date and you have chosen your options. C* candidates need to ensure you have kept your books going from your K test. Log books will need to be handed in at the time you sit your paper for a preliminary check. It is recommended you print a copy of the Examination Guidelines for Riders taking Efficiency tests from the PCAT website under the handbook section Tests and make yourself familiar with it. Happy Birthday for the month of May: 14 May Isobel Schmidt 27 May Baylie Wilson 30 May Pete Archer We hope you all have a great Birthday! Becky Allen will be holding a showjumping Clinic at Bowthorpe 22nd, 23rd & 24th May. If you would like to book a lesson or for further information call Patricia-Anne Chochrane on Changing Times At the last committee meeting, the issue of just how difficult it has become to move our equipment from property to property for our rallies was discussed. There are now four trailers: the caravan, the showjump trailer, the games trailer and the port a loo that need to be moved every time we move venue. Over the last few years, this task has fallen on a chosen few usually the property owners, to organize. It has become increasingly difficult for people to find the time to do the moving, and as a result there have been rallies where we have found ourselves operating without some of our equipment, which in turn has resulted in us misplacing some vital bits and pieces. It has therefore been decided that we will have a twelve month trial period of making Powranna our home ground, after which time we can re assess and see if the situation suits us. Our Powranna site has developed significantly over the last couple of years. We now enjoy a fantastic cross country course, permanent toilets and water, an all weather showjump arena, sealed storage unit and now a new covered canteen. We are in the process of installing a permanent dressage arena and feel the time has come to put our roots down and utlise this fantastic facility more than just the five or six times a year we are currently there. This is not to say that we won t rove if an opportunity arises. We will still have camp at Westbury and have made a decision to go back to having a Christmas ride rather than a rally in December, but it will give us the opportunity to call a place home and be the envy of all those other clubs that comment how lucky we are to have such a fantastic facility...little do they know that up until now we haven t used it to it s full potential.

From the Committee Meeting There will be a number of Committee positions coming vacant at the AGM in August. If you are be interested in joining the Committee, please express your interest to one of our existing Committee people. From June we begin a twelve month trial of making Powranna our home ground. A Note Regarding Canteen As we ve had quite a few new riders join our club over the last few months, here is some information you may find helpful. New families will be rostered on with more experienced members so you can learn the ropes. Rostered members are expected to be at the canteen by 9.30 to start preparing morning tea for coaches and to remain until everything is packed away after lunch. Morning tea for coaches is delivered to them while they are teaching. You will notice that each rostered family has either Cake; Coleslaw, Onions and in the winter, soup against the name. This means that you bring a cake large enough for morning tea for say 6-8 people; Coleslaw means you bring a made up coleslaw a largish bowl this is to go with the hamburgers etc at lunch. If you have onions next to your name you need to bring a quantity of sliced onion for cooking to be served with the hamburgers etc and if you are rostered to bring soup, you bring a boiler of soup. If you are rostered on to do canteen and for some reason are unable to do it, it is up to you to find a replacement and if you have any queries about the canteen, please speak with Lucille Stubbs our Canteen Co-ordinator, who will be more than willing to help you. 7 What s What, When and Where with Pony Club Newer members and those who have not yet hit the competition scene may be interested in this information about what s on and how you qualify: The Pony Club Association of Tasmania (PCAT) is affiliated with the Australian Pony Club Council (APCC) and the Equestrian Federation of Australia (EFA). Within the State there are three Zones and 26 Clubs. Tasmanian Pony & Riding Club (TPRC) is included in the Northern Zone (NZ). The PCAT Handbook may be downloaded from the website or ordered through the Secretary at a cost of around $10 this manual is the Bible of pony club and is a must have! Most of the events listed below are hosted by different clubs annually. Games Northern Zone Games (Zone Games) are held annually in May. TPRC generally enters an A and B team Any rider can try out as long as both rider and pony has qualified by attending three rallies. Nominations are usually called for at the January camp. State Games The A team may qualify by being placed 1-4 in the Zone Games. These are held during the first weekend of the winter vacation. The venue is rotated around the three zones National Prince Phillip Games is the inter-state competition. Riders having completed their C test and of the appropriate age (refer to the handbook) may try out for Tasmania on a given day which is advertised on the pony club website and in the newsletter. Show Jumping Northern Zone Show Jumping is held in August/September. The events are separated into Group A, B & C with heights ranging from 55/60cm in C Group to 105cm in A Group (max 1 st round). State Show Jumping Championships are held in January. Both horses and riders must qualify with two rounds within 5cm of the first round of the Championship for groups A, B & C (see handbook for heights for each grade). Both horse and rider must also be rally qualified. Qualifications can be obtained at Zone Show jumping, Interschools Showjumping, Gymkhanas and local Shows only one qualifying round can be gained from an ODE. Dressage State Dressage Championships - are held in January. Both horses and riders must qualify with two tests of at least 55% for their respective group - A, B & C. Both horse and rider must also be rally qualified. Qualifications can be obtained at dressage days and one day events. Eventing One Day Events (ODE) are held throughout the State between November and March by individual pony clubs and eventing clubs. Divided into Grades 1 4. Each day is divided into three sections including Dressage, Cross Country and Show Jumping. State Eventing Championships (Trials) are held in March and are divided into Grade 1, 2 & 3 Trials No trials are held for Grade 4. Two successful ODE events to qualify provided the combination does not have more than the stipulated penalties for qualification on cross country and is not eliminated in any other phase. Both horse and rider must also be rally qualified. Gymkhanas Open to all members, run by individual pony clubs and some hunt clubs etc. These are fun days and usually advertised in the livestock column or the newsletter. Tom Johnson School Tom Johnson was the inaugural President of TPRC and active member of the Pony Club movement Statewide. On his death he left a legacy to be used to run a camp for riders of around C test level in the northern zone. One or two riders from each club are nominated by their club to attend an overnight camp where they are given a full day s instruction as well as games and activities. Its intention is to promote inter-club friendships. It can be confusing so keep this information so that you can refer back to it!
