(402) mroatsz-28@hotmail.com PRESIDENT S GARAGE Hello My REBELS Family, and welcome to this months President's Garage! We had another great turn out at the July Meeting, I love seeing a Full House! There's so many Car Shows going on this time of year. Many of you are hitting a lot of the shows, and even bringing home some Trophies too. Our own beloved REBEL in training Claire Shotsman, is acquiring quite the collection of trophies lately. She took home a Second Place at the Shriner's Car Show in Roca. I'm looking forward to a great year in getting our REBEL s Auto Club name out and attracting some new members, so we can give back to our community even more. Dean and Sharon Shotsman, have already began getting donations for next years Car Show. As I said in the July Meeting, I want to see the club, have an actual Car Show Committee that would consist of at least 5 to 6 people that can help with the planning and everything that's involved with next year's show. That way all of the work doesn't fall on a single person's shoulders, like the old saying, "Many Hands Make Light Work". I would like next years show to be even bigger and better than ever before, with things that will set us apart from all the other shows, so people will say, "Now that's the Car Show you don't want to miss". I hope everyone has a great day, and I look forward to seeing everyone at the next meeting. Steve Lewis, President REBELS Auto Club

2 Hello REBELS! Here is a quick recap of Club Meetings for August: VICE PRESIDENT REPORT EXECUTIVE MEETING: Tuesday, August 14 at The Eatery on South 84th LADIES NIGHT: Wednesday, August 15 at Cici s Pizza on North 27th GENERAL MEETING: Wednesday, August 29 at HY-VEE on North 84th. The SCCA Nationals (Cone Races) are September 3 through 10. The REBELS need all the help we can get. Remember, SCCA is one of our biggest events. Do you know anyone that can help chase cones during this event? If so, call Gary Weyers on his cell at (402) , or at home at (402) Anyone can help; they DO NOT have to be a Member, nor are they required to join the Club to help. Shifts are only 4 hours. How many people can you come up with to help out? Wives, neighbors, someone from work, your church? Call Gary! Now for the fun part! SCCA has invited everyone from the REBELS to attend a GIANT party on September 6, starting at 5:00 PM. There will be a live band and plenty of food and adult beverages. Bring the kids, grandkids, wife, girl friend, neighbor etc. Rides in an SCCA car will be available as time allows. Only requirement is to wear your REBELS shirt. If you don t HAVE a REBELS shirt, call me at (402) , and we will arrange for you to have a shirt. On Friday August 3rd and 4th, the Street Rodder Magazine Tour was in Lincoln for the 10th year in a row. They showed cars at Culvers on Friday night and again on Saturday at Speedway s Cars and Coffee event. Many thanks to Doug Weber and Gary Weyers for all their help. Clay Smith, CEO of Speedway Motors, was there and personally thanked the REBELS Auto Club for helping out with parking and serving coffee and donuts. Shawn s car? Still not quite ready, but this week we run the gas and oil lines, finish the wiring and install gauges. Should be ready in plenty of time for SCCA in September (LOL). Jim McNeil, Vice President REBELS Auto Club REBELS CAR OF THE MONTH Jim and Wanda Holstein s 1966 Buick Riviera Jim and Wanda have been REBELS members since They bought the Riviera in 2012 from a gentleman in Wisconsin who said he was the second owner. The original owner purchased the car in Detroit. He was also the owner of an upholstery shop and completely re-did the interior. The engine is the original 425 V8 engine, which Jim overhauled in The was know as the last of the Nail Heads (for the unusual vertical alignment of its small-sized valves). After Jim bought the car, he found a long chrome strip in the trunk, which turned out to be for a hood on 1957 Riviera. That led Jim to believe that the hood had been replaced at one time. But, other than the hood and the upholstery, the car is stock. Jim and Wanda show their Riviera often at local shows, and just completed the 500 mile Tour of Nebraska event in June. REBELS REMINDER Be sure and save your Pop Top Tabs for the Ronald McDonald House. Help support the Ronald McDonald House of Lincoln by collecting those little tabs you pull to open soda, soup or other aluminum cans. Bring your Pop Tops to the next meeting, and give to Margaret or Lydell Otley. HELP MAINTAIN THIS REBELS TRADITION! 2

5 JESUS WAS A FORD MAN? Everyone knows that Jesus was a Ford man (because he walked everywhere he went) but God was a Mopar fan. So, how do we know this? The Bible says God drove Adam and Eve from the garden of Eden in a Fury. And of course, the roar of King David's Triumph was heard throughout the land. And all the believers were in one Accord LOL. THE TRUE STORY OF THE AUTOMOBILE AIR CONDITIONER The four Goldberg brothers, Lowell, Norman, Hiram, and Max, invented and developed the first automobile airconditioner. On July 17, 1946, the temperature in Detroit was 97 degrees. The four brothers walked into Henry Ford's office and sweet-talked his secretary into telling him that four gentlemen were there with the most exciting innovation in the auto industry since the electric starter. Henry was curious and invited them into his office. They instead asked that he come out to the parking lot to their car. They persuaded him to get into the car, which was about 130 degrees. They turned on the air conditioner, and the car cooled off immediately. Henry Ford got very excited and invited them back to his office, where he offered them $3 million for the patent. The brothers refused, saying they would settle for $2 million, but they wanted recognition by having a label, 'The Goldberg Air Conditioner,' on the dashboard of each car in which it was installed. Now, a lot of people don t know that Henry Ford was anti-semitic (he hated Jews) and there was no way he was going to put the Goldberg's name on two million Fords. They haggled back and forth for about two hours and finally agreed on $4 million, and that just their first names would be shown. And so to this day, the controls of all Ford air conditioners, are labeled: Lo, Norm, Hi, and Max... A True REBEL - Winning the Race! (Could this be Jim McNeil and Sweetie Pie at age 18?) 5
