1 REBELS AUTO CLUB NEWSLETTER MARCH 2012 President s Message I think Spring is finally showing it's signs. The warm temps bring out the cars and the motorcycles. We still have some Winter left. Just don't know how much. We had a great turnout for the last meeting at the Garage. I really enjoyed listening and learning about hemi engines from Craig Foster. I would like to see that become a regular spot for upcoming meetings. If any of you would like to share some trivia, please let me know and we will work it in to the meeting. Part of what we are is to remember the history of cars, engines and the people who design them. Thanks to all of those who volunteered for the swap meet. I'm usually out there, but this year I was trying to kick this cold I've had for over a month. Our next big event in March is the World of Wheels. Once again, the Rebels will be well represented. It's a good place to see some very cool cars. Our next meeting will be at the VFW. We will post the map and/or directions in the newsletter. A lady from work helps serve food out there and it sounds like a great place to have a meeting. Thanks to Renee for her scouting abilities. Don't forget to start baking some cookies for the next troop packaging. If you have anyone that would like to receive these packages, let Sandy Francisco know. I'd like to remind members to help with recruiting new members. Membership is down slightly this year. We need to reach out to friends and neighbors to join us in all the fun we have. I heard several comments about recruiting younger people. We have to recognize they are the future of the Rebels. Again, thanks to all the members for their volunteer work they do. So many are working behind the scenes to make our club what it is. Keep up the good work. Hope to see you on the road soon! CARDS OR FLOWERS Anyone who knows of a Rebels member who should have a card sent to someone in the hospital or flowers for a funeral, Contact John or Carol Danielson OLD MATCHBOOK, NEW FRIEND ~By Boyd Ready While working the Rocky Manginelli Swap Meet this past weekend, I was called back to our sign in desk to meet with a gentleman who wanted to talk to a member of the Rebels Auto Club. The gentleman was John Butcher of Avoca Iowa and he wanted to present a book of matches from the 1950 to 1960 time period. The matches were most likely handed out by members of the original Rebels Auto Club to motorist they assisted. John said that he ran across the matches at a swap meet and knew that the Rebels helped put on the Rocky Manginelli Swap Meet so he brought the matches to the meet so he could give them to the club. I accepted the matches for our club.

5 Welcome to another fine month of high winds and changing temperatures that s right it must be March and swap meet time. Now that we have the swap meet behind us it is time to start on our car show circuits. I want to thank all the guys and gals that went out and battled the high winds and the chilly breeze to make this year s swap meet a memorable one. Hopefully everyone was able to receive a car council book. If you have not signed up to volunteer for the Rebels car show please make sure that you get a hold of Linda Masters or Dave OMelia or me. This months on the 21 st is Ethan Teply s 10 th Birthday so if you see him wish him a happy birthday. If there are any rebels that have a business that would like to give stuff away for our car show please contact myself or Dave. Every little bit helps. Thanks to instant mashed potatoes and a jar of gravy, this version is streamlined to the point where you can have it on the dinner table in an hour. All you need to serve with it is a tossed green salad. It can be made and baked early in the day. Cover lightly and refrigerate. Bake until very hot in a preheated, 350 degree oven. 2 large carrots, peeled and chopped (about 1 cup) 1/2 small onion, chopped fine 2 tablespoons olive oil 1-1/4 pounds lean ground beef Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste 1/2 cup frozen corn kernels 1 cup purchased beef gravy 2-1/2 to 3 cups mashed potatoes from a mix (follow the directions for 6 servings) 1 egg 2 tablespoons milk 1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Spray a 2-quart baking dish with cooking spray. 2. In a large skillet, saute the carrots and onion in the olive oil for about 5 minutes, or until soft. Add the ground beef and cook for 10 minutes or until it is done, breaking it up with a large spoon as it browns.drain any accumulated fat from the beef mixture. Season with salt and pepper. Stir in the frozen corn kernels. Spoon the mixture into the baking dish. Pour the gravy over the ground beef mixture. Bake, uncovered, for 20 minutes. 3. While the beef mixture bakes, prepare the potatoes according to the directions on the box. Spoon the mashed potato topping over the meat mixture, spreading it out so that it is even. 4. In a small bowl, beat the egg with the milk. Brush the egg-milk mixture evenly over the mashed potato topping. Return the dish to the oven and bake it for 10 minutes. Remove and set oven to broil. Broil the shepherd's pie for 5 minutes, or until the mashed potatoes are golden brown.

6 Many Rebels helped, just a few are pictured, THANKS to all of you!!! The weather was great and you all helped make the show a success!

7 Tour Nebraska Deadline May 15th ~by Rod Phelps, VP NRCA The NRCA Tour Nebraska will be based out of Norfolk this year. It is the 20th anniversary and We are going to make it special. The Tour is open to any 4 wheel vehicle 30 years old or older. The Tour dates are June 2 and 3 first weekend in June, and is always two days of driving of approximately 300 miles. This event started as a means to attract new members to NRCA and each year approximately 1/3 of the entries are new members. Membership is $15 a year for you and your spouse. The Tour fee is $25 which includes one high quality screen printed T-shirt - no rubbery iron on here! Additional shirts are $15 so this a pretty good value. This is a pre-entry only event and entries are not accepted after May 15. The largest tour number-wise was based out of Lincoln, 339 vehicles and NRCA hopes to set a new record this year. NRCA sponsors scholarships, assists with vehicle titling, monitors legislation and promotes good will for all special vehicle interests. If you have not been on the tour for awhile please join us for this Anniversary Tour. If you have never gone well, you are missing something unique. If you have a prized vehicle and are not a member of NRCA please realize that sticking together and creating an organization with size in the best protection from unintended legislation that could be very detrimental to yourself and your fellow club members. If you think 600 miles is to far, you can go one day, Saturday or Sunday. For the same money and half the fun. The Tour will end at York, just 50 miles from home. Don t forget the deadline is May 15, VFW POST 131 IS THE LOCATION OF OUR MARCH 28 MEETING 5721 Johanna Road, Lincoln NE Dinner from 6-7, Meeting 7:30 VFW CLUB Menu: 8 oz. steak dinner $10 10 os steak dinner $13 Chicken fried steak dinner $9 Chicken fillets $8.50 Kids meal $4.50 Extra side $2 Fish $8.5 Shrimp (6) $8.5 Turf & Surf oz steak & 3 shrimp $10 Turf & Surf - 8 oz steak & 6 shrimp All dinners are served with Garden salad, choice of French fries, baked, or mashed potatoes with country gravy, and coffee or tea. 8 Four members of the Rebels traveled to Grand Island to participate in the 39 th Annual Tri City Auto Show which was held at the State Fair Park Exhibition Hall. Suzy Phelps sent Rod out to the show with her 46 Chevrolet Pickup. Yeah the one with the tree trunk stuck in the front bumper. Rod parked it near the south center side of the show and set up a great display. He even put a bear on the cab roof. Unfortunately I failed to get a picture of the car and display. Suzy received a first place for her entry. On the way back to Lincoln Rod dropped the pickup off at Perry Seibert's hot rod shop for a 40,000 mile check up. Somebody in NRCA to[d Rod to Drive It and Suzy said OK. New members Bill Dick and Brian Hagelgantz joined me in a three car display near the north west corner of the building. Bill brought his Screaming Yellow highly modified 2005 Stage 3 Roush Mustang. Bill has performed a lot of modifications on the car over the 7 years he has owned it. For this show Bill installed a brand new splitter on the front. If you are wondering what a splitter is you are not getting your full allotment of NASCAR racing. Bill received a first place for his entry. Bill also does a lot of high speed driving. He competes in the Sandhills Open Road Challenge in the 100 Mile an Hour division and runs the curves and straits at the MPH road course at Hastings. Bill is the student advisor to the group of University of Nebraska Engineering students that are building an Indy style car for the competition to be held in Lincoln this spring. Brian brought his 1967 Mustang Fastback. Brian built this car in the garage behind his house. He tore it apart, fixed the rust, fixed the body, painted it, replaced the suspension, replaced the brake system, replaced the engine and transmission, replaced the wiring harness, replaced the wheels and tires, replaced the interior, added a modern sound system and a lot of other stuff I think I forgot. When he was done he had a bright red Mustang powered by a 427 sending that power to the rear wheels through a five speed transmission. Brian received a First Place. Brian was also involved in building Butch Rohren's Model A coupe. Brian also has a trailer and, ----wait for it, a boat. Rod Phelps always said trailers are for boats. Looks like that is true at Brian's house. I brought the 1986 Mustang GT that we Rebels know as the Raffle Car. The Grey Knight is what I like to call it. The car was well received at the show and was awarded a First Place. I am proud to have joined my fellow Rebels in displaying our cars at the 39 th Annual Tri City Auto Show
