1 REBELS AUTO CLUB NEWSLETTER AUGUST 2014 Hello fellow rebels President s Message The temps are up and the activates are too. There is a car show or event about every weekend for the next couple months. I hope everyone is out and about enjoying the events and such. Please be careful with the temps. It's hot and humid so make sure your staying hydrated and cool as much as possible. Our car show was a great success as always and the show in Des Moines was good as well. Good weather and good friends always makes for a good time. The upcoming shows are good and most are for a good cause. Donations to charities and other organizations are the best shows to go to. The Paul Brown rally is this weekend and that is a great time and great people involved. I never met Paul but from what I found out about him he would have been a great friend and person to know. We have some events coming up in the next few weeks that need your help. Please contact Gary if you can donate some time to help at the fundraisers like the cone races and things. It's a big help to the club and a big help to the participants at the races. We always need your help no matter what time of the year it is. I would like to thank Craig Foster for stepping up to be the new car show coordinator for next year's show. I'm sure he will do a great job and carry on the standard that we have set forth in the past. Thanks Craig for taking over and look forward to another great show next year. Please keep up to date with the news letter every month as it has good info in it on what's happening and when. Stay safe in your travels to and from shows and watch out for pedestrians, motorcycles and bicycles. See you on the streets, Dave Officers: President: Dave O Melia bowtie@neb.rr.com V.P.: Sandy Francisco gsfran68@gmail.com Secretary: Margaret Otley lo25307@windstream.net Treasurer: Ken Bougger bouggers@cornhusker.net Coordinator: Gary Weyers Large: Jim Jensen usptausptr@aol.com Alan Christman achristman0372@yahoo.com Newsletter Editor: Tracee Bougger 2702 South Street Lincoln, NE traceejean@yahoo.com PH: NEXT MEETING August 27 Valentinos 70th & VanDorn Bishop Heights True Value is holding a Show & Shine on Sunday, August 10, 2014 at their location on 4200 South 27th Street. from 11:00-3:00 cards & flowers Anyone who knows of a Rebels member who should have a card sent or someone in the hospital or flowers for a funeral, Contact Carol Danielson

5 by Jim Jensen At Large Board Member THIS MONTH WE HIGHLIGHT OUR REBELS MEMBER BOYD READY In 1959 I was working for the Ken's Econoway on Cornhusker Highway near Havelock for 60 cents an hour. Ken asked me if I would like to be in charge of his other station on West O street for the summer. I could see a way to pay for a car and agreed. The job was from 6am to 6pm seven days a week. I would be the only employee working at that location and I had to eat lunch while on duty. It also included a raise to 75 cents an hour. So I could earn the princely sum of 9 dollars a day. Ken's wife came out every other day to check the register. While she counted the money I measured the tanks. Payday was every other Friday and after two weeks I had a 126 dollar payday. That evening I went shopping! At a skinny little used car lot on the north side of O Street near 22 nd I found my thrill. It was parked near the back of the lot just waiting for me. It was a 1950 Ford four door sedan. It had a flathead V-8 and three speed transmission with no overdrive. It was light green. Yeah that ugly green that Ford put on about a third of the cars in It had a rip in the front seat and was heavily worn on the driver's side but the rest of the interior looked all right. The exterior was straight and the chrome was good. I had to have it! How much I asked. 150 dollars the fellow at the lot replied. I only had 126 dollars so intense negotiations followed. After a little back and forth it was mine for 125 dollars. I had one dollar left from my first full time pay check. It was a good thing I rode my bike to work. Only one more thing was required. Getting my mom to come down to the lot and sign the paper work. After all I was a minor. Since I was driving her car I headed home to pick her up. We arrived back at the lot to find the car right out front where I couldn't miss it. Mom looked it over and asked if we could take it for a drive. Sure said the salesman. And off we went. Me driving and mom riding shotgun. All went well and we returned to the lot to finalize the purchase. I was a car owner! While waiting for my next paycheck the car sat in front of my parent's house with in-transit tags. I had no money for gas so it didn't move. While I was waiting the back door handles came off so it would look like a two door. And an old green wool army blanket became the front seat upholstery. Two weeks passed and I had another 126 dollars. First I headed to the Lancaster County Treasurer and got my license plates. Bye bye 25 dollars. I bought some insurance because my mom made me do it. 20 dollars for some thing I knew I didn't need. Then it was off to Bear Frame and Alignment to get the rake. You remember the rake? That was when the front end was lowered and the rear end was left up in the air. Looked cool. The technician at bear knew exactly what I wanted. He put my spiffy little Ford on the lift and raised it up. Next he pulled his torch over and heated the front springs. Then he gave it a mighty downward pull on the front bumper and viola I had a rake. I was cool! Bye bye 25 dollars. And then off to the pin striper's to get the name on the front fenders just behind the wheel opening on each side. I named it Street Sweeper. 25 dollars. That finished the improvements for now. I needed the rest for gas. No more bike for me. Two more weeks and another 126 dollars. How could I be broke all the time making this kind of money? I'll bet you know the answer. 5 more dollars to the pin striper to put my nick name, Skeet, on the driver door just under the window sill. So cool. And 75 dollars for an adapter bell housing, clutch assembly, lengthened drive shaft and three speed floor transmission. I put it in my self. Learned on my parent's 49 Ford when I took some teeth off the cluster gear of their car before I got this sweet 50 Ford. They thought, no demanded, I fix it with my money. You learn how to eliminate the labor cost early on. I drove the car to school that year and enjoyed many firsts with it. First out of town foray to Omaha with some buddys, first car date with me as the driver, first drive in the snow and first fender bender. By the next summer a 52 Olds 2 door caught my eye. Bye bye baby, hello honey. Boy was I fickle.

7 Bill Masters received one of seven Participant s Choice Awards and Bruce Wright was awarded a trophy for being the oldest veteran to enter the show. There were over 100 entries lined up along the tree shaded street. Buggy and train rides were free and the weather fantastic. Proceeds of the show support the Veteran s Memorial in the background of the above picture. It is a focal point in the center of the town of Bellwood.

8 Linda Masters displays her breakfast of biscuits and gravy, topped with a flag at the Legion Club. Fresh homemade klatches were also distributed. Cruising up Route 66 as we head to Bellwood. The scenery was fantastic! Ken Bougger and Lydell Otley out perusing the entries. Craig Foster s favorite part of any show is allowing guests to sit in the 64 Corvette Convertible. The guests really like that too and take lots of pictures.
