1 REBELS AUTO CLUB NEWSLETTER APRIL 2012 President s Message Choices always have to be made during this time of year. Should I work in the yard or work on my car to have it ready for the first car show of the year? There's work to be done on both, so set your priorities. I hope you have time for both. I was fortunate to have my Army son and his family here from Maryland. This is their second trip here this year and both for funerals. The first was Crystal's maternal grandpa and then her mother. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family. It was also a great time to see the grandkids again. They're fun, but can really wear you out. If any of you missed the chance to get to the World of Wheels show in Omaha, you missed a good one. It was good to see several Rebels and their entries. Everyone should try to enter your car at least once. We had several awards presented and hopefully they are listed elsewhere in the newsletter. Check the newsletter for upcoming shows and events. May seems to be the first, big car show month. Please try to support the high school shows this year. Both are struggling to stay alive. I was glad to see the Rebels contribute to the Northeast and Southeast shows. It's a great way to support Lincoln's youth and their interest in cars and trucks. Let's all get out and help with the troop packaging this month. Bake cookies and check the list of items that we like to send them. Even though the deployments are down, we still have a few soldiers to send them to. The car council book shows Cruisin' night at Culver's doesn't start until May, but the weather has been very cooperative and Officers: President: Cary Petersen cary_petersen@hotmail.com V.P.: Renee Morrison rmpackers@juno.com Secretary: Margaret Otley lo25307@windstream.net Treasurer: Wanda Holstein wrh0824@earthlink.net Coordinator: Scott Wuethrich Large: Sheryl Wright sherylw7@windstream.net Lydell Otley mroatsz-28@hotmail.com Newsletter Editor: Tracee Bougger 2702 South Street Lincoln, NE traceejean@yahoo.com PH: NEXT MEETING April 25 Parker s Smokehouse several cars have been seen there. 5 Well here we go, the start of April! Boy, these first months have sure passed by in a hurry. We have been really busy with moving and me being ill and a little depressed that my truck is going to be out of commission for a few weeks - looks like I spun a cam. I would like to thank all of you that have filled in for me at the meetings and thanks again to all that represented the Rebels during the World of Wheels. We had a great turn out. There really isn t a whole lot going on in the month of April which gives us all a little bit longer to get our hot rods ready for the shows in May. Don t forget that we have our Rebels show in June and if you have not signed up to volunteer please contact Linda Masters, Dave O Melia or me. If there are any rebels that have a business that would like to give stuff away for our car show please contact me or Dave. Every little bit helps make our show a success! 7 Formula SAE began in 1981 in Michigan. The objective of the competition is to design, build and demonstrate a commercially viable mini-formula style racecar for the non-professional weekend autocross racer. The United States Competition has been held annually in Michigan and California for the past several years. Beginning this year the California event is moving to Lincoln for at least the next five years. The 2012 competition will take place at the Air Park Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) site on June cars and over 1,000 team members are signed up to compete in the Lincoln competition representing universities from the US, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, India and Japan. The Lincoln Chamber of Commerce estimates that this event will bring $1.3M into Lincoln. It is a big deal! The competition consists of a technical inspection followed by three static and four dynamic events. Static events are Design Judging, a cost and manufacturing report and a business/marketing report and presentation. The dynamic events include acceleration, skid pad, autocross and endurance/fuel economy. The SCCA will be running the dynamic events. Benefits for the students include: Gaining project management & scheduling skills Coursework knowledge transferred directly to real-world applications Learning valuable skills needed for future employment Exposure to the mobility engineering industry Networking and establishing employment opportunities The UNL has established a team for the first time this year. The team, Husker Motorsports, has designed and is building their racer for the completion. The chassis is a TIG welded, Chromoly 4130 tubular frame design with fiberglass body panels. The power train is based on a 2009 Kawasaki ZX-6R motor cycle engine and 6-Speed slipper clutch transmission. The engine has a 13.1:1 compression ratio and runs on E-85 fuel. The rear wheel drive train includes a limited slip differential. The brakes and suspension were designed by the students. So, what is the potential role of the Rebels Car Club? The SAE is looking for volunteers to help run the competition. They are looking for people with training and/or experience in performance automobiles to help out with the judging. Over 100 community volunteers are needed to run this four day event. Areas where help is needed in addition to judging the static and dynamic events include helping the SCCA with the dynamic events and administrative activity such as registration, crowd control, parking and grounds clean-up. The SAE organizers of the event are already aware of the Rebels support of the SCCA Nationals and are anticipating that the Rebels will be available to help out in this event. Individuals interested in volunteering can contact the SAE directly by calling Kaley Zundel at or by her at kzundel@sae.org. Photo of two cars at the 2011 California Formula SAE event Troop Packages Sunday, April 29 th The Garage Come join the fun! Please bake and freeze your cookies and other goodies. Bill Masters will gladly accept items at his station, Parkway 66 at 48th & Normal. He pre-bags, seals and freezes them for packaging day. We will also take your frozen items on packing day. 8 Nine members of the Rebels traveled to Omaha to participate in the World of Wheels Car Show. We left Lincoln as a group on Thursday and arrived at the show at 2pm. As we entered the show some of our members were asked to allow show officials to check the gas gage of their car. If the tank was too full they were asked to drain some out and return. So while the rest of us were setting up our display Butch Rohren and Marv Schwab headed out to get rid of some motion lotion. Butch returned after a short while. Marv's Lincoln did not give up the gas as easily and he did not return until about 6pm. Marv had to go to a local Ford service shop where they drained 15 gallons from his tank. They told Marv no charge we will take your gas instead! After getting our cars set up we headed for the American GI Forum for dollar tacos. You can't beat dollar tacos! We arrived back home about 10pm World of Wheels Suzy's Truck For the next couple of days our guys attended the show and watched over the cars. On Friday I accompanied Roger and Patty Schwab and Tony Sanson to the show. After we left the show we headed over to the Quaker Steak and Lube for a bite of supper. You know you have to grease the machine some times. On Saturday My wife Sandy and I went back to the show with our grandson Brandon. Some of you know him from Tour Nebraska. He has been on seven Tours and is going with us this year. He had a great time checking out the cars. At the awards on Sunday our merry group of Rebels were rewarded with many awards. Mr Rod Phelps showed Suzy's truck and was awarded a Best of Class. Larry Sovereign's green Green Corvette received a Place Award. Marv Schwab's gas drained Lincoln received a Best of Class. Marv's big brother Roger got a Place Award for his beautiful white Chevelle. Butch Rohren's 31 Ford coupe received a Best of Class. Tom Drbal's 33 Ford five window coupe was presented an Outstanding in Class. Bill Dick's screaming yellow 05 Roush Mustang was awarded a Best in Class. The raffle car, The Silver Knight, presented by Boyd Ready got an Outstanding in Class. Brian Hagelgantz also received an Outstanding in class for his 67 Mustang fastback World of Wheels Tom Drbal When we entered the awards room an announcement was made that after the regular awards were presented the special awards would be handed out and everyone should remain for them as anyone might win one. Well one of our own Rebels did just that. Brian Hagelgantz was awarded the Master Builder Award for his work in building his 67 Mustang fastback in his garage out behind the house. I had a great time and enjoyed the camaraderie with my fellow Rebels World of Wheels Sharon next to her new red kitchen
