In a rare occurrence, I found myself with the afternoon off last Friday so I took to the shed to choose my bike for the weekend ahead.

I thought I would rest up the 2012 RMZ450 Scooter as it has got a busy few weeks ahead, the KATO 2fiddy wasn t appealing I wanted some more grunt.

We were off to round 6 of the Dandenong MCC s Off- Road club champs at Krusic s Ride Park near Sale, where I had last ridden in the Thundercross back in May. I thought I would rest up the 2012 RMZ450 Scooter as it has got a busy few weeks ahead, the KATO 2fiddy wasn t appealing I wanted some more grunt. So I pulled out the 2007 RMZ450 yes, my original Scooter and the last of the carby models and still a really fun bike to ride. It had been dormant in the shed for a while so I got it started up third or fourth kick (which is a good sign) and took it for a quick spin a little sluggish but I thought it would soon get its groove back as it warmed up. So into the super trailer it went by itself, which is rare as I usually take more than one bike, and me and photographer Jo headed off from the wet soggy Yarra Valley mid Saturday morning arriving at the ride park around 2:30pm. We arrived to find many club members and riders already there, some involved in the junior kickstart training program under the command of Frank Gogol #566, and others either marking out the track or having a little sneak preview of it. I left Jo setting up camp and went over to help put up the scoring quick shade and unroll a bit of tape here and there, catching up with mates I haven t seen for a few months as I went around. Cappa (Glenn Capuano) arrived with a bit of a showpiece a 1984 KTM250 MC his latest vintage ride and the perfect weapon of choice for the upcoming Warragul Toyota ThumperX Challenge more on that later. Captain Gogol and the Cadets Cappa s KTM With the weather being quite balmy for a change, the evening was spent by the camp fires chatting and sledging and watching Cappa eat the biggest Townsend T-Bone we ve ever seen. But overnight that balmy calm weather quickly deteriorated as a strong westerly wind blew up and heavy showers pummeled the super trailer early into the morning. The start time was scheduled for 9am so sign-in and scrutineering were conducted at a leisurely pace, giving more time to chat to mates as they arrived for the day. Lou Stylianou #553 (RM250 2 stroke, Over 40s A Grade) was still on a high after getting third in last week s Kooweerup MCC s Golden Beach Pony Express 10 laps over 6 hours riding in Ironman great effort for an old bugger. And he won a can of chain lube too from the Scooter News giveaways at riders briefing. No stopping the man now as he prepares for next year s A4DE. The course had been set out in and around the quarry that backs on to Krusic s Ride Park and a 6-7min sprint loop took us through several types of terrain, soft sandy like quarry floor, long grass runs around the outer edges and a little bit of tighter stuff to keep us on our toes. There was plenty to look at too, if you had the time, with huge industrial screening machines, trucks and dozers parked around the course. 2

3 So off we went on the sighting lap, which, unfortunately, is where my day was to end. The Scooter stalled in the first section and I could not get it started, so back to the pits where numerous advice was offered, but it wasn t to be fixed in a hurry. And with no spare bike in the trailer (Doh!) it was left up to photographer Jo to get photos of everyone else today. 9 THUMPERCROSS CHALLENGE Entries Close 8 th September!! It s looking like being quite an event this one with the offroaders vs the motocrossers. As you may remember last year, Daniel Milner, top Aussie off-roader won the inaugural Thumpercross. Motocrossers will be looking to even the score with the likes of Cameron Taylor, Kade Mosig, Cam Sinclair, Steve Powell (SPMX), and Adam Miller up against the off-road challengers Scott Noble, Kyle Bernhard, Lachie Harrison, Daniel Milner, Jai Wedlock and Lou Stylianou just to name a few (our favourites). So whether you are MX or Off-Road, and you want to represent your discipline (and stick it up to the opposition) get your entry in. And me? I will be representing motocross as I am still competing in the Northern Series and riding in the Nationals this year. Cam Sinclair is planning on three stunt shows in the Sunday program and there are numerous random prize giveaways and prize money. More on that in the coming weeks. Juniors have a full program on Saturday with all the classes IF you young guns get your entry in!! This year there will be a new track which will be faster flowing without the stop-start corners we had last year. A Girls Day Out The Winter Blues may have kept some people in doors the last few weeks, but certainly not us the girls!

It was raining and very overcast, but after the drive through to Moe township the rain slowed to a fine mist and we could see the sun peeking through.

..then all of a sudden nothing else mattered, we arrived - all our worries and thoughts disappeared - it was bike time!

11 A Girls Day Out The Winter Blues may have kept some people in doors the last few weeks, but certainly not us the girls! Our most recent Wednesday outing saw us taking off for the hills up to Erica/Moondarra, after dropping the kids off at school. What were we thinking? It was raining and very overcast, but after the drive through to Moe township the rain slowed to a fine mist and we could see the sun peeking through. Chatting along the way to our hidey track; about kids, cooking, how much electricity bills have gone up, on-going injuries we had and how crazy busy our lives were...then all of a sudden nothing else mattered, we arrived - all our worries and thoughts disappeared - it was bike time!! We unloaded the bikes (without bashing our heads on the roof of the van) and started gearing up, but before setting off for the day we fit in the most important ingredient...the SHORT BLACK. With the coffee now covered we continue gearing up and warming up the bikes. Biker Bandit 2 (BB2) begins warming up the "Kato" and "The Beast", as Tracy calls her bike. We set up the Drift Ghost-S Helmet Camera to capture some crashing action, hopefully not, and begin to set off. After fiddling with the choke, stalling a few times, Trace finally managed to get the bike to idle, got the green light going on the Ghost Camera, and we were off with BB2 taking the lead. It wasn't long before we came across a few mini lakes on the fire trails, which called for a discussion about who was going to venture in first and what side were we going to take. For those regular readers, you may recall a few weeks back Tracy was the test dummy with the last huge puddle - which ended in a fair submerging, so this time it was BB2's turn to take one for the team, in which she made it through with no problems - a great start to the day! We continued on, coming across a few steep descents. The second one we approached had Trace off the bike to walk a little way down first to test whether it was going to be OK to attempt it or not. As she headed on down the hill she turned to yell to BB2 who had just approached the top of the steep descent, and only caught the tail end of BB2 getting off the "Kato" losing her footing and slipping to the ground and just lying there laughing. 11

After the laughing fit was done, and Tracy had managed to scramble back to the top of the hill to assist BB2 in standing back upright, BB2 had come to notice that her thumb had begun hurting.

BB2 sat to the side of the track to rest, and Tracy continued back on down the steep descent (again) to further check out whether to attempt the hill or not.

If anyone was watching, they definitely would have had a good laugh in that 5 minutes of chaos!

12 After the laughing fit was done, and Tracy had managed to scramble back to the top of the hill to assist BB2 in standing back upright, BB2 had come to notice that her thumb had begun hurting. They removed the gloves, only to reveal an instant bruise, with some swelling and a graze - not such a great start to the morning! BB2 sat to the side of the track to rest, and Tracy continued back on down the steep descent (again) to further check out whether to attempt the hill or not. Within seconds, the washed out hill had Tracy flat on her backside and sliding down the hill, the only thing breaking her slide was sliding straight into a tree. If anyone was watching, they definitely would have had a good laugh in that 5 minutes of chaos! After quite a few minutes of laughter, we decided that this steep descent was like a BLACK snow run, not to be attempted without some back up, so out came the GPS to help us work out some other tracks. We headed back along the track we had come on, until we came across a main track then headed in a different direction. On our travels we came across a couple of fellas, who had just finished clearing some huge gums trees across the 4x4 track for a local farmer. Josh who was a little surprised to see 2 chicks (old ducks) out for a day trip, was glad to move a few logs out of the way for us, as well as have his photo taken for the newsletter. Thanks Josh! Back on the bikes again and down along some very narrow tracks. Soon we came across an opened up section of the bush, however it was disgusting to see that the clearing was full of household dumped rubbish. It is terrible to see how out of control the rubbish dumping in the bush is. There was one particular track which would have seen at least 5 older style TVs dumped all along it. There are such things called tips people...arrggh!! Soon after getting past all the rubbish, the sun came out around 1pm. We found ourselves at the Caringle Scout Camp, so decided to pull up for a lunch break. Out came the cut lunch as well as the map so we could plan a different route back to the van. After lunch we headed off back into the trees and up past Erica, noticing a few gates closed, so we stayed well away from those tracks. BB2 lead the way down a few very steep hills with a number of whoops and rather large ruts that looked a bit scary from the top of the hills peering down. Thank goodness we made it down all in one piece. We arrived back at the van around 3pm, pulled out the thermos for the last of the now warm coffee (to assist with the drive home), jumped out of our wet socks and packed the bikes into the van and headed for Thorpdale for a bag of spuds. We arrived home from our eventful day just before dark, and just in time to wash the bikes and get dinner organised for the family. Another awesome GIRLS Day Out!! 12
