Since this weekend at Wonthaggi was announced I had been looking forward to a weekend where I could ride a few different bikes in two different style events and without having to move the campsite.

We set off early Saturday morning, me, photographer Jo and daughters Sarah and Erin, along with Aaron Bonfadini (#80/#494) who wasn t going to miss this opportunity either.

2 Since this weekend at Wonthaggi was announced I had been looking forward to a weekend where I could ride a few different bikes in two different style events and without having to move the campsite. Shame I have to go to work on Monday! Dandenong MCC were running round 8 of their Off Road Champs on the Saturday and round 4 of the motocross club champs on the Sunday. We set off early Saturday morning, me, photographer Jo and daughters Sarah and Erin, along with Aaron Bonfadini (#80/#494) who wasn t going to miss this opportunity either. We noticed plenty of water lying in the paddocks next to the highway between Phillip Island and Wonthaggi as they have had a fair bit of rain over the past weeks. But DMCC were upbeat about the conditions and go to great lengths to ensure their riders are offered as many opportunities to ride as possible which is probably why DMCC has a huge member base. We arrived around 8:30am, signed in quickly (thanks ladies), dragged the bikes out of the trailer and got ready. I had brought along the Suzuki RMZ450 (aka The Scooter), the KATO 250 EXC and my 1989 Suzuki RM250 which has been under work for quite some time now and today was going to be a good chance to ride it before I actually raced it. With a little bit of space left in the super-trailer I had also thrown in Sarah s Gas Gas 125 for some post race trials practice. Aaron managed to bring along three bikes his YZF450, KTM 300 EXC and my Gas Gas 250 trials bike on which he has been tearing up and down his dad s retaining walls at home along with rolling up, over and along a recently felled gum tree (dodging the bees still living in it). We had no sooner got the bikes off the trailer when riders briefing was announced and this time it was being given by my mate and Kawasaki fan Andrew Lambie #909 who was Clerk of Course for the day, and a very good job he did too. He told us the sprints would start behind the start gates on the motocross track and whizz around parts of the track as well as utilising the sides of the track and a small paddock where the spectator viewing ridge was put to good use. Then we were to head into the extreme section with its rocks, log walls and shipping containers, and one or two boggy bits. The final section would see riders heading back onto the motocross track, bypassing the finish line table top, back up the start straight and finally through a small wiggle of a bunted section and then home. All in all a great effort to get as much out of the course as possible without creating the opportunity to damage the mx track, or put riders in danger. The Mk1 Motorcycles (Carrum Downs, ) give aways were enjoyed by a lucky few randomly called chosen riders, and off we went for a sighting lap. 2

Aaron thought that looked like fun too, so his aim then became how to ride really fast on his Kato, his YZ450F and MY RM250. Our thanks to DMCC for a well organised day, especially track-master and Clerk of Course Andrew Lambie, Justin Oakes on Mylaps, the sweeps, J0 and J1 caretakers and first aiders including Nathan Bear Allen (Steward), Glen Capuano, Roger Pendlebury, the Lees, David Rodek, Al Bernhard, Mick Denham, Kurt Goodman and Frank Gogol, all the lovely ladies on sign-in, the canteen crew (how nice to have an all-day canteen at an off-road event!) and the track prep team. Good grief, when will they ever give me a real office and maybe even a chair? 10

While it wasn t frosty cold it rained quite a bit over night which made for some not so happy camping but by Sunday arvo it had warmed up to the point that I succumbed to some sunburn. The track was very greasy for the start of Sunday morning which kept everyone on their toes (or on their head) for the first few races but by lunchtime it had dried out and the track had become very tacky. This was a unique event as it was the coming together of several clubs. VIPER Vintage MX ran the event and in their wisdom had invited VCM and the Classic Scramble Clubs to join them. Some members from the newly formed VERi also turned up to do a few laps on their enduro bikes. It was great to see so many familiar faces in one spot although there were so many there that I didn t get a chance to catch up with everyone. There was a good variety of models that were brought along for show and the competing bikes ranged Spanish Bultaco s & Montesa s, a BSA from the UK, some Czech CZ s, a few Husqvarna s and the usual assortment of YZ s, KX s, RM s, and CR s competing in classes ranging from Pre 70 up to a modern support class which included a 2014 YZ 450 ridden by mx legend Trevor Thomas.
