Facebook: Steven Davis (Scooter News) V244 May 2016 Cover Shot goes to Tim Lawrance #221 and Nick White #315 Club Days are all about our C Graders and fun! DMCC Mk1 Motorcycles Off-Road Champs Rnd 3 Hallston, Presented by Taltarni Constructions & Roving Report from The Mollers & Ranga Racing 15 th May 2016 Proudly sponsored by Mk1 Motorcycles
Beautiful Hallston I was still on the racing sideline this weekend due to an injury but rather than stay home, me and photographer Jo decided we would go down to watch the cross country race, and besides we had a request from young Chris Wynd #479 to give him a lift to the race and he is one of our sponsored riders. Round 3 of the DMCC club champs was at Hallston near Mirboo North, sponsored by series sponsor Mk1 Motorcycles and with this round presented by Rohan Nancarrow and team at Taltarni Constructions Rohan and Jeff Graham along with Mick Denham had done a lot of the hard work in the week clearing tracks after last week s storms. We had a good night around the camp fire and were visited by The PRO-Fessor (more on that later) in fact the Scooter News camp ended up being quite lively as all the adults migrated away from the kids sitting at the big bonfire one visitor to our fireside noted: those kids talk more sh*t than us adults!. Frank holds the crowds in a trance Matt Porteous wins a Shinko tyre Sunday morning dawned dry and windy and the juniors were to race first so the seniors were rolling in whilst the race was on. We attended the senior riders briefing from President Frank Gogol where the series sponsor MK1 Motorcycles had provided Shinko tyres as giveaways, supplied through Bruce Collins Enterprises: Lou Stylianou, Trent Tucci, Wayne Newton, Gareth Downes and Matt Porteous were the lucky recipients this week. And then it was a hands on head start for a 2 hour cross country with Pro class out first, Tom Mason #61 taking the holeshot and leading from start to finish as the Mylaps lap chart shows: 2
The track could not have been any more perfect. There was no dust anywhere the dirt would be roosted up into the air and just fall to the ground, but it wasn t slippery wet either. And with Mick Denham and his posi track machine adding another 2 minutes onto the loop during the week the fast guys were getting around in about 12 minutes and completing 10 laps. My role today was first of all to man the junior track diversion where the J1-J2 were doing a shortened version of the senior track, and at the end of the junior race I closed down the diversion so no seniors would accidentally take the wrong turn. Then in the senior race I was keeping an eye out for riders taking hot lines or wrong turns and I am glad to report that none of that was going on. Here s some photos from the Junior race: Sunni Lawrance #622 gets a top-up J4 s head out 3
Nick Graham #747 wins Juniors outright Renee Tucci #644 Monique Simioni #616 wins Junior Girls Young J1 rider Christian Heap #654 completes his first x-country and conquers that hill. 10 laps!! Mitch Vendermeer #705, J4 Riley Nancarrow #700, 2 nd outright 4
With the juniors all back safely it was time for the senior race. 2 hours non stop if you had enough fuel and water on board, but most riders made at least one pit stop. Robert Mantella #71 in Ray Borg s roost Bailey Davis #213 wins C Grade Mick Denham #D saving rubber Nick Bloye #26, 4 th in Pro class, kicking up loam Kane O Rourke #504 & Jay Drummond #76, B Grade Kane will be reporting for us from the VORC at Three Bridges Leigh Tomlinson #285, B Grade 5
Ryan Keyser #33 Winner Over 40s A Grade, Rohan Couch #50 Simon Boyd #357, 3 rd in A Grade Expert Great to spot my mate Nick Zarb #944 Trent Tucci #294 took the class win out there in C Grade looking the goods Craig Prout #333, 2 nd in A Grade Expert Suzuki mounted Nick Steward #82, RMZ250, A Grade Expert 6
Ben Forster #282, wins B Grade Jayden Haw #18, 8 th in A Grade Expert Single trail heaven in the trees Young gun Jackson Myers #454 takes on Bryan Noble #B Jack Goodman #32, 5 th in Pro class, Matthew Middling #515, C Grade The club welcomes suggestions for new properties. If you have, or you know of a property that would suit a round of our club champs we don t need the green grassy paddocks - bush and bracken fern and tea tree are perfect, and probably only good for motorbike riding anyway! The club cleans up after itself and donates a generous sum of money to the landholder for the use of his property, repairs any evidence such as ruts so no erosion takes place and may even do minor improvements to the property e.g. gravelling driveways, small cross over bridges and fencing projects, all in exchange for the use of the property. In fact one year I rode a race a sprint on a 10 acre property. And on one property Mick put in some new access roads for the landholder with his posi track and even excavated a shed site for him. So get in contact with 7
the club or Scooter News even if you just have an idea and it may just turn out to be another great venue for the club. The DMCC is the biggest donor to the Erica CFA for their involvement with club days so communities and not just landholders can benefit. Steve Mason #919, 4 th O 40 A Grade Tom steers around Paul Jones #273 Father son combo Steve and Tom Mason were both riding today. It was good to have Tom attend the race to stir things up a bit in the Pro class and it was good to have Steve there to stir things up in the Vets class as well. Hope the two of you had fun! Rider s Report: Chris Mainjet Wynd #479, B Grade For round three of the DMCC club championships we headed to Hallston in the cool, loamy fields about 15 minutes from Leongatha. I was lucky enough to road trip down to the track on the Saturday with Steve and Jo. We shared race stories and I learnt about different aspects that I can apply to my racing. Once we arrived at the track I had a grouse night hanging out with Nick Graham, Jake Gogol, Trent Tucci, Kyle Bernard, Lachie Harrison, Jack Rodek, and Jack Amos. Going to all these races it's not just the racing that makes it so much fun it's also the people you surround yourself with (and of course meeting The PRO-Fessor). Sunday came and I spent the morning watching my mates in the junior category race their cross country which went for an hour and a half. There was some close racing between Nick Graham, Riley Nancarrow, Jake Gogol and Ryley Oakes that was good to watch. Before I knew it I was sitting on the start line ready for my race. I had an average first lap as I crashed and twisted my bars about half way round. After I had quickly straightened them up I put my head down and started to flow heaps and started to find my speed. The track was awesome with loamy sandy corners and then slippery 8
mud slides going in and out of the bottom of the gullies. The track was flowing and around every corner there was a new challenge almost that you looked forward to. A massive thanks to The Dandy club for putting on an awesome round and to all the club members who helped run the day. Also a massive thanks to the land owner for letting us go and rip his property up. It was one of the best tracks I've ridden in a while and can't wait to race there again next year. As always nothing's possible without the help of my sponsors Scooter News, Bikemart, Penrite Oils, Ringmaster Images, New Brakes and Mechanical Repairs. A huge thanks to all of them for everything they do for me. Matt Porteous #548 wins O 40 C Grade Spence Harrison #911 gets 3 rd in O 40s B Grade 9
Matt: Great weekend off road champs. The track was awesome. A few crashes (one big one) still great to get a win. Starting to feel comfortable on the Beta 350. My daily are paying off. @quickcheckaus Behind Tom Mason, Kyle Bernhard #36 and Billy Newton #384 had a great battle and only 6 seconds separated them at the finish, Kyle just ahead The PRO-FESSOR RETURNS As you would have read recently The PRO-fessor is back from overseas. I have to confess I forgot to tell him that the dates for the A4DE have moved so after making the trip to Merrijig and finding the paddocks empty he rang me from the public phone box in Merrijig opposite the Coles, very annoyed. To make it up to him I reluctantly invited him down to Hallston for the night, he arrived on dark in his Citroen DS20 and proceeded to work his way around the camp site before settling in beside old enduro dog Bryan Noble to reminisce about the old days. Chris Wynd touches the hand of brilliance and genius Jeff Graham receives a pair of gloves for winning our recent competition guessing the GET ignition system: The PRO-Fessor and Bryan Noble shared some fascinating discussions: jetting specs, spring rates, athlete development progammes and technical stuff - all sorts of stuff along with the odd centerfold from Trail & Track magazine, SWMs, Maicos and Monties. Lots to get excited about. (Mmmm about time The PRO-Fessor visited the Ashley and Martin clinic, look at that shiny nut) 10
We were packed up by 2:30pm and on the road, driving through a downpour just 20 minutes up the road, so great timing given last year s challenges getting out of the property. Thank you to the club, Bryan Noble (Clerk of Course), Justin Oakes (Steward and Mylaps), Pres Frank Gogol, secretarial work from Lynda Harrison, Mick Denham and his CAT skid steer machine, Rowan Nancarrow and Jeff Graham who were at the property on Friday checking it out and clearing once again the fallen trees and to everyone who helped set up on Saturday. To Linda Tucci, Lynda Harrison and Tracie Oakes on sign in, Heather and Tony Lee manning the club trailer and kitchen, Kurt Goodman, Adam Cornthwaite and sweeps, and everyone in the refueling pits helping out all the riders, the presenter of the round, Taltarni Constructions, and especially to the property owners Doug and Francis Alexander. Read on for a report from Paul Moller from Nyora with his son Charlie after round 3 of the Junior Vics at Ararat MCC: Chompers is 11 years old and leading 85cc SW class. ****************************************************************************** M2r 2016 junior vic mx champs Round 3, Ararat MCC, 7-8 th May 2016 Report by Paul and Charlie Moller #118 Well what a weekend for the penultimate round of the Victorian Junior MX Titles and Stealth MX rider Charlie "Chompers" Moller #118. On the Saturday he rode into 10 th overall for the season in 65cc 7-U12 B Grade on his Metrakit MKX 65. Then after winning the first two rounds of 85/150 4st SW B Grade at Outtrim and Warrnambool, he went on to win the third round after 3 ordinary starts going 2,1,1 for the day. Chomps 12
goes into last round in Mildura in 4 weeks time with a lead of 26 points, fingers crossed he can take home the B grade title on the 85SW Class. A very big thanks to his "cool as coach & mentor" Y-AIM s Cameron Taylor, Kawasaki Australia, Wonthaggi Motorcycles, Steve Hunt, Bud Racing Australia, AXO, IPONE, Gas Imports for the Michelin Tyres, Zipfix Ty Rayfield, the Collective Family, Metrakit Australia, Topline Seats, his training partner Ty Sharp, team mates Kyle Mc Tavish and Dylan Parsons. 14 And our good mate Rowen Bishop #v53 has sent in this Roving Report from round 2 of the Northern MX Series at Mooroopna last weekend: ****************************************************************************** Northern Region mx series Round 2, Mooroopna, GVMCC, 15 th May 2016 Roving Report by Ranga Racing s Rowen Bishop #v53 Round two of the Northern Regions MX Series was hosted by GVJMCC at Shepparton and as usual an expertly prepared track was on offer. With all the rain experienced in the North East leading up to this event, riders were greeted with a perfectly sealed track all ready to be cracked open first thing Sunday morning. It must be noted that the level of skill in track prep and the quality of equipment being employed at our venues continues to amaze, very much appreciated track crew. If you re not into tracks that develop during the day from nicely groomed, to well-used and finally rough as guts then this is probably not the track for you. Riders usually decide to seat bounce obstacles, where as today it was the track s turn to decide when to seat bounce the rider; those that adapted come home with the points. Healthy to full grids across most classes continues to show the strength of this series with a number of riders travelling from well into NSW/ACT territory, also a few National level riders can be seen out on track showing us some stuff that I for one can only imagine. Refer # 117 Dylan Long demonstrating how to holeshot, whip and roost anyone within about 20 meters of his back wheel! 14
For today's results if you give Mylaps a day or two to recover from the meltdown I understand it had, you should be able to see who's who and where they finished. Big shout out to all involved to make the day / series happen, Clubs, crews, organisers and officials. Ok now for the important stuff Ranga Racing v Team Macalice Ranga Racing, Ryan and Rowen Team Macalice, Ben and Glenn My personal aim for the day was to get back some of the love that was sorely missing from the Cobram round due to a big dose of 'man - flu' of plague like proportions, which I'm using as an excuse for my personal worst performance for quite sometime. Suffice to say, the first time on a 250 two stroke in nearly two decades can not help but make you feel good. So, Banga + a cup of cement = happy Ranga! I bumped into old mates 'Team Macalice' young Ben #703 and old fart Glenn #v54/69. Today's challenge would involve bragging rights, not only between classes but also generation gaps with Glenn and myself not only riding +45 Vets but also C Lites against our Junior team members my son Ryan #870 and Glenn s son Ben #703. The biggest talking point between Glenn and myself at the start gate was how long we were going to wait after the gate dropped before we took off, in our opinion hole shots are grossly overrated, particularly when you can pick up a few spots in the first couple of corners and you re still good to go to work come Monday morning. Also on today's agenda was a smooth transition from the wee little YZ144 to her bigger sister the 2014 YZ250 without embarrassing myself too much, except for a slight case of arm pump and whiskey throttle over the finish line table top, race one C Lites, resulting in a fully sick and unintentional air wheelie, it all went pretty well! 15
Back to the team challenge, we never saw the young blokes all day, even though we were apparently running in the same race! While I was wandering around the outside of the track I found Tweaked Performance had set up camp out back of the canteen area. Young Ryan Cossens #10 has not only set up his own business, but he is about to commence his 2016 Finke assault (l think I got that right, refer next sentence). I asked him a whole bunch of questions, but I've got a memory like a sieve come the end of round two, so I forgot all his answers. Ranga Racing will be following his and local veteran rider #v12 Andrew Houlihan's Finke adventures. That might be enough from me for now; my next event will be the Alpine MCC Double Header NR.3 / North East Champs 28/29 May. See ya later. Ranga #v53 P.S. Thanks to Ryan #870 for taking the pics. #v165: I love that track at Mooroopna I will definitely be back up there sometime soon and match your banga with my 450 Scooter. Thanks Rowen and Ryan ****************************************************************************** Finke Bound with Sam Davie #? It s just a month away from the 41 st running of the Tatts Finke Desert Race and Scooter News is excited to announce we have renewed our sponsorship of Sam Davie #9, following on from his top 10 placing in his first attempt last year hence he carries the #9 plate.
