2 Saturday It s a good job we have had a few short weeks and public holidays as this weekend was going to see us covering two events across two disciplines. On Saturday me and photographer Jo headed down to Hallston in lush green Gippsland for the Round 3 cross country of the Dandenong MCC s Off Road championships, and today we were accompanied by my mate, mechanic Cody Hall #18 and his Husaberg TE300. We arrived in beautiful sunny weather and parked in the already full car park, thankful for a late 10:30am start as the juniors were going first today. But the clouds were soon moving in and it was starting to cool down, just as the juniors were finishing. It was a great turn out with around 130 riders entered including some last minute locals - we had riders briefing and it had started to drizzle which was going to turn the hilly track slippery, but I didn t care I had a brand new Michelin S12 back tyre on the KATO. Frank Gogol told us they were sending us off in this order: Pro, A & B then Over 40 A Grade, Over 40 B Grade, Clubman and then Over 40 C Grade. We lined up for a hands-on-head, dead engine start, and each class set off in order. Very quickly B Grade Over 40s came up to the line, which meant it was my turn and even despite my kickstart, I was second into the first corner behind Mick Denham #599 who also had a kick start, with Bryan Noble #B right up me clacker. I was feeling good and chasing Mick comfortably until Bryan put a passing move on me at one of those trees where you can go left or right I went right and Bryan went left and next thing he was in front of me, and not long after that I found I just couldn t get my mojo on. I finished one lap, came in, had a rest, cleaned my goggles, gathered my thoughts and went back out. I 2

3 did another lap, still didn t feel good, so I decided to call it a day, and whilst putting the bike back on the trailer I noticed I had a flat back tyre. So that s the reason I didn t have me mojo on! Maybe next time I will be able to stay up with Mick and Bryan, but not today. We packed up, changed into dry clothing and then had a bit of a wait, and some entertainment, as car upon car, with trailers and campervans had to be towed out from the camp site. 5

I was assigned to The A Team along with good mate Bruce Fleming and young lady rider Jessica Huysman and we were rotated around the west end of the track throughout the day. As I stood out there over the 7 hours of the event I noticed a few common things about the riders - that they all weigh around 70 kilos, not 95 like myself! And they are very active on the motorbike and move around a lot, and the only place they sit down is in the apex of a corner. And of course, they are incredibly fit I heard that in one race Adam Monea did his fastest lap on his last lap, at the end of a grueling 30 minute moto. I also heard he does around 500kms of mountain bike riding. A week. And I often wonder what scrubbing and tail whipping does over jumps as not one of these riders did it whilst they were racing today. So I think this proves to me this does NOTHING! It just looks good. Anyway, it s over to our intrepid MX Nationals 7

8 Roving Reporter Dean Cottier of Get Smart Racing Services, who studies the races a bit closer than me, and writes a mean report too: The weather was perfect for racing on Sunday; the track looked great and had been well prepped, decked out in all the sponsors signage and media towers dotted about. However the track was to throw up a few challenges, especially once watered at lunchtime. This made the track heavy with some sections very slippery for the second part of the day's proceedings. This caught a few riders out and the conditions seemed to be favoured by the two-stroke riders - even Matt Moss #1 lost the front on his way through the turn before the big tabletop. Moss tips it over in Race 2 And gets tips from the pit crew Honda CRF150 Cup - Juniors The 150s really attacked the track to put on a good show in the Honda CRF150 support event, with many of the junior riders jumping off their original machinery onto borrowed bikes. Hugh McKay #72 won convincingly and will now enjoy the opportunity to ride overseas as his first place prize, to race in the International 150 Cup ( Go get ' em, Hugh! He was the only rider on the day in any class to win both of his races and he also took on the huge step up jump after only 12 minutes on the bike. Hugh heralds from Tasmania and has signed this year with the WBR Junior Team Green, usually riding a KX85, and will no doubt be at Swan Hill next weekend for the Junior Nationals. Watch out for him. And special mention to Cory Watts #28 (Penrite Honda Racing Team) from Horsham who had a huge cartwheeling tumble off the finish line jump in Race 2, staying alert enough to get off the track before heading to the first aid room, sore but very lucky. MXD Under 19s, 250 The MXD class was won by Jack Simpson #7 on the sweet-handling Boltons KTM.

9 MXD Under 19s, 250 The MXD class was won by Jack Simpson #7 on the sweet-handling Boltons KTM. Jack rides with maturity and consistency - he does a good job every outing, riding the bike well. Egan Mastin #45 led all of race one on his Husqvarna before a mix-up in the final lap cost him the win. Wayde Carter #5 on the Motorex KTM was the first four-stroke rider in the front positions and finished third. Local boy, who used to live at this track, Jed Beaton #12, won race two in truly impressive form on his GYTR Yamaha, showing that the four strokes were well and truly competitive in the hands of the right rider. MX2 - Lites Luke Clout #4 did well in race one on his Serco Yamaha, leading home Kayne Lamont's #94 Husky and Geran Stapleton on a beautifully-handling Raceline Pirelli Suzuki.

MX2 Race 1 Race two was two-stroke dominated with five of the six front-runners proving this track favoured their choice of ride.

# 54 Luke Arbon rode his SD3 Husky into a comfortable third place and Errol Willis #283 came in fourth, with Luke Clout rounding out the top five on his fourstroke bike.

10 MX2 - Lites Luke Clout #4 did well in race one on his Serco Yamaha, leading home Kayne Lamont's #94 Husky and Geran Stapleton on a beautifully-handling Raceline Pirelli Suzuki. The #14 bike of Geran Stapleton led most of the race, only being overtaken on the second-last lap by Clout and Lamont. MX2 Race 1 Race two was two-stroke dominated with five of the six front-runners proving this track favoured their choice of ride. Lamont cleared out from the start, followed by fellow New Zealand countryman, Hamish Harwood #53 on his KTM. # 54 Luke Arbon rode his SD3 Husky into a comfortable third place and Errol Willis #283 came in fourth, with Luke Clout rounding out the top five on his fourstroke bike. This was the race of the day for me; the track had been watered and was slippery on the hard-packed surfaces. Lamont absolutely annihilated the opposition and gets my ride of the day - he was awesome to watch. MX1 - Open Impressive Lamont #94 Fellow Kiwis, Lamont and Harwood Superpole went to Matt Moss #1, but it was interesting to see Kirk Gibbs #5 ride one gear higher than all other riders on the big KTM Motorex Race Team 450 four-stroke to finish third in the Superpole and to then go on and win race one, followed by Matt Moss and Victorian Adam Monea #3 (NPS Monster Energy Kawasaki). #211 Billy Mackenzie s team did their homework between race one and two as Billy won race two convincingly on his CDR Yamaha, with Jake Moss #6 and Adam Monea in second and third place respectively. Adam Monea took out his first ever overall win at his home track to the delight of the locals: The thing with a win is it just makes you hungry, you just want more, it s like a drug. There is no stopping here he told Fullnoise in his post race interview. 10
