Anatomy of a TV Shoot This year at International Rally of Queensland (IROQ), the organisers opted to promote the event via a segment on the popular Channel 7 program Creek to Coast with smaller

Chris Nixon and I from the Marketing and Promotions Committee contacted TPD Media, the producers of the programs and found the executive producer was a real car nut and happy to be involved.

Chris and I went up to Channel 7 where TPD is located for a pre production meeting where we planned the basic outline of the segment as well as sort out the car talent.

Being an international event, we were looking for an APRC car but none are available locally.

2 Anatomy of a TV Shoot This year at International Rally of Queensland (IROQ), the organisers opted to promote the event via a segment on the popular Channel 7 program Creek to Coast with smaller inserts in The Great South East and Queensland Week ender. Chris Nixon and I from the Marketing and Promotions Committee contacted TPD Media, the producers of the programs and found the executive producer was a real car nut and happy to be involved. Fortunately, one of their on air talents, Roger Vickery, has competed in rallies as well as Off Road racing so everyone was super keen. So, what was involved in putting this all together? Chris and I went up to Channel 7 where TPD is located for a pre production meeting where we planned the basic outline of the segment as well as sort out the car talent. By now you would have seen that one of Queensland s biggest supporters of rallying, Keith Fackrell of KCF Rallysport, agreed to help. Being an international event, we were looking for an APRC car but none are available locally. Adrian Coppin from Canberra has an International car and was intending to enter the APRC event so we asked him and he was only too happy to make the long drive north to help out. The theme of blending history with modern cars in motorsport was now complete so a quick recce of the shoot venue and the appropriate permits meant it was all systems go Then it rained. Not a drop of rain had fallen on the roads to be used for the shoot for many weeks but the night before the shoot on the 28 th of April, over 100mm fell and turned what were beautiful hard packed roads into a quagmire. A quick re adjustment, static shots, set up, interviews and early breezes meant we were able to put together some sections of road by mid morning. Thanks to the magic of television, brief sections of road were able to be pasted together to emulate a stage and be more than good enough for the TV audience. If anyone thought this would be an action packed day, they would be a bit disappointed as filming such a segment is very much a case of Hurry up and Wait! The whole exercise on the day took around 5 hours and there would be scripting, voice over recording and editing yet to be done by TPD in readiness for the on air date two weeks out from IROQ. Once the cars were under way though, the sound of a Cosworth powered Escort revved as its maker intended, as well as the turbo rush of the Citroen, made all the waiting worthwhile.
