3 First-Time Starters: Three Cowboys made their first career starts last Saturday against Air Force. With regular starters Brandon Ewing, Brad Jones and Joseph Taylor forced to sit out the Air Force game to serve suspensions for a fighting incident at New Mexico on Jan. 30, the following three Cowboys made their first college starts. True freshman Aaron Henson, playing in only his second career game, scored four points versus Air Force, and grabbed four rebounds. It was the first points and rebounds of Henson s college career. Junior walkons Louis Engels and Byron Geis each scored three points against the Falcons, which was the first points of their college careers. Engels was playing in only his fifth game as a Cowboy after walking onto the team this season, while Geis was playing in his fourth career game in his first year as a Cowboy. Engels also grabbed one rebound, his first at Wyoming. During that three-game span, Platt has recorded two double-figure scoring games versus TCU and 13 at Air Force. In the last three games, he is averaging 11.7 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.0 assist per game. Bienvenu Songondo May Make His First Career Start on Tuesday Fueled by His Recent Increased Production: Entering Wyoming s home game versus TCU on Jan. 27, 2007, sophomore forward Bienvenu Songondo was averaging 0.7 points, 0.7 rebounds and 4.8 minutes per game. But in his last three games, starting with UW s win over TCU, Songondo s production has skyrocketed. Over those last three games, Songondo is averaging 8.0 points, 3.3 rebounds and 24.0 minutes per game. Due to his recent increased production, combined with the fact that senior center Daaron Brown is not expected to play Tuesday versus BYU, Songondo is projected to make his first career start against the Cougars. Brandon Ewing and Brad Jones Will Return to the Wyoming Lineup on Tuesday Versus BYU: Wyoming s outstanding backcourt of Brandon Ewing and Brad Jones will return to the Cowboys starting lineup this Tuesday versus BYU. The two were suspended for last Saturday s game at Air Force due to a fighting incident they were involved in at New Mexico on Jan. 30. The suspension was imposed by the Athletics Department and the Mountain West Conference. Ewing s original suspension was for one game, so he won t miss any additional games due to the suspension. Jones originally was issued a two-game suspension with the stipulation that his second missed game must come in the regular-season finale versus New Mexico on March 3 in Laramie. Wyoming forward Joseph Taylor, who also missed the Air Force game, will not play versus BYU, as he is serving an indefinite suspension that was imposed by Wyoming head coach Steve McClain. That suspension stemmed from Taylor s involvement in the fighting incident at New Mexico. The MWC had issued Taylor an original two-game suspension, but McClain elected to make Taylor s suspension indefinite. 4 Young Cowboys Making Big Contributions of Late -- Eric Platt, Ike Okoye, Bienvenu Songondo and Travis Nelson Play Key Minutes in Wyoming s Wins Over Colorado State and TCU: Several young Wyoming Cowboys have made key contributions over the past several games. Below are a few of those big contributions. True freshman Eric Platt scored six points and grabbed four rebounds against Colorado State on Jan. 24 and helped key Wyoming s home victory. Platt s six points came on two successive threes in the second half that gave the Pokes a lead. Platt made the last big play of the game, stealing the ball from CSU with 57 seconds on the clock and passing it to Brandon Ewing for a dunk to give UW a lead on way to a home victory. Platt came back on Jan. 27 versus TCU to score a career high 15 points, including a four-point play with 11:26 to play that took Wyoming from a deficit to a lead -- a lead that Wyoming would never relinquish. Sophomore Ike Okoye scored four points and grabbed four rebounds in the home win over Colorado State. With Wyoming trailing and 10:22 remaining in the game, Okoye drew a foul on his CSU defender and hit both free throws to pull the Cowboys to within one at Later, with 7:11 remaining and the game tied at 52-52, Okoye gambled and intercepted a CSU pass on the wing. He then threw the ball ahead to a streaking Brandon Ewing for a layup to put the Cowboys up to stay at While the Pokes would never trail again in the CSU game, Okoye made another huge play with 3:18 remaining, grabbing an offensive rebound and scoring on a put-back to build a Wyoming lead. Sophomore Bienvenu Songondo enjoyed his first double-figure scoring game of the season and tied his career rebounding high when he scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds in a home win over TCU on Jan. 27. Songondo also played a career high 26 minutes, while filling in for injured starter Daaron Brown. Redshirt freshman Travis Nelson teamed with Songondo in the TCU game to give the Cowboys a very effective inside performance. Nelson tied his career high with four rebounds against the Horned Frogs in 20 minutes of play. He also scored two points, blocked two shots, handed out an assist and made one steal in the victory. At the Top of the Heap -- Brandon Ewing and Brad Jones Rank No. 1 and No. 4 in the Mountain West Conference in Scoring: Not only are they the two leading scorers for the Wyoming Cowboys, but Brandon Ewing and Brad Jones are among the leading scorers in the Mountain West Conference this season. 7 One of the Nation s Top Backcourts Wyoming s Brandon Ewing and Brad Jones What They re Saying About Brandon Ewing and Brad Jones They re terrific! They are. They re terrific guards. They are a handful, and we have tremendous respect for them. -- Jeff Bzdelik, Head Coach Air Force Falcons The Wyoming guards are very tough to defend. It s amazing to me how small they are and yet how well they get to the rack. They draw fouls well, and they get to the line a bunch. 26 BASKETBALL #40 Daaron Brown Forward/Center Senior Compton, Calif. (Compton Community College, Calif.) : Daaron Brown has recovered well from his back surgery last February and is expected to be a key factor on the Cowboy frontline this year. Brown exhibited a strong work ethic as he rehabbed from surgery, and the Wyoming coaching staff has been impressed with his dedication to improving his conditioning entering this season. The senior proved a year ago that he could be an offensive force in the middle. Head coach Steve McClain and his staff expect Brown to improve his rebounding to complement his strong offensive game : Brown s junior year at Wyoming was cut short when on Friday, Feb. 3, 2006, it was determined that he would be lost for the remainder of the season due to re-injuring his back against Utah on Feb. 1. Brown s injury was to multiple discs in his lower back. He underwent surgery later in February. Brown played 15 minutes against Utah on Feb. 1 prior to injuring his back. Brown helped lead Wyoming to a road win over TCU on Jan. 7, 2006, recording the first double-double of his career -- scoring 19 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. At Colorado State on Jan. 25, he came off the bench to score 14 points and grab nine rebounds, while shooting 77.8 percent from the field (7 of 9) on way to a Wyoming road win. He had another outstanding game against Northern Colorado, scoring 16 points and grabbing three rebounds in 29 minutes. He shot 80.0 percent versus UNC, hitting 8 of 10 field goals. Brown had outstanding rebounding games against Denver, pulling down eight rebounds, and versus Southern Illinois, grabbing seven boards. He averaged 3.7 rebounds per game to rank fourth on the Cowboy squad. Brown played in 19 of Wyoming s first 21 games prior to suffering his season-ending back injury. He missed the entire second half of the conference season plus the MWC Tournament. He provided the Wyoming Cowboys with a physical presence inside with his 6' 9", 260-pound frame. He entered the season hoping to overcome a back injury that forced him to miss virtually all of his sophomore season at Compton Community College in Compton, Calif. In fact, Brown played in so few games during the season it was hoped he might receive a medical hardship from the NCAA, giving him three years of remaining eligibility. Shortly before the start of the season, it was determined that he would not receive an extra year of eligibility from the NCAA. Wyoming head coach Steve McClain described Brown as a very competitive and toughminded player when he signed Brown in the spring of Daaron (Brown) is a young man who brings a toughness to our program, said McClain. He will provide us both rebounding and scoring inside. His competitiveness and toughness reminds me of Uche (Nsonwu-Amadi, who played for Wyoming from to ). I also expect Daaron to be an effective defender inside for us, much like Uche was. Junior College: Brown missed almost the entire campaign due to a back injury. During his true freshman season of at Compton Community College, he averaged 9.0 points and 5.8 rebounds per game, while shooting 57 percent from the field and 72 percent from the free-throw line. Brown was a teammate of former Cowboy Kevin Lewis at Compton Community College. The two teammates helped Compton CC to the 2004 California State Junior College Championship. Compton finished the season with a 17-8 record. It became only the third team in California Community College history to win three regional playoff games on the road to earn a spot in the state tournament, and was the first of those three teams to go on to win the state title. 33 #31 Eric Platt Guard/Forward Freshman Casper, Wyo. (Kelly Walsh) : Eric Platt chose to stay home and play for the University of Wyoming. A true freshman from Kelly Walsh High School in Casper, Wyo., Platt is expected to challenge for playing time at either the shooting-guard or small-forward positions. Eric (Platt) can really shoot the basketball, said McClain. He had a tough junior year where he fought injuries all year, and then he went out and really played well on an AAU team out of Colorado the summer before his senior season. He showed me that summer, against some great competition at the AAU level, that he could play with any guard in the country. He will be a great addition to our program. High School/Personal: Platt was named the 2006 Wyoming Gatorade Player of the Year. He earned First Team All-State and First Team 4A North All-Conference honors his sophomore, junior and senior years of high school. As a senior, Platt averaged 23.6 points, 6.8 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 2.9 steals per game. He led Kelly Walsh to a 16-9 overall record and an 8-2 record in the 4A North Conference to finish in second place and advance to the state tournament. For the second consecutive year, he was named the 4A North Player of the Year. His best individual scoring performances as a senior were a 40-point night at Gillette and a 35-point performance versus Cheyenne Central in the first round of the state tournament. His other season highs included: grabbing 12 rebounds against Rock Springs, handing out eight assists versus Riverton and making six steals against Rapid City Central High School. His junior season, Platt averaged 20.4 points, 8.3 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 2.1 steals per game. Street & Smith named him an Honorable Mention All-American his junior season. He became the first sophomore in Kelly Walsh history to earn All-State as a sophomore. He was the North Conference Player of the Year for the season. Platt holds the Kelly Walsh school records for: most three-point field goals made in a season (72), most three-pointers made in a single game (10) and most free throws made in a single game (18). He was elected a team captain both his junior and senior seasons. Platt was coached in high school by Kreg Adams. He played AAU basketball with the Colorado Chaos in the summers, participating in some of the top AAU tournaments in the country. He earned AAU Division I All-Tournament honors at the Hoosier Shootout, Rumble in the Bay and Top of the Rockies tournaments. Platt was also active as a member of the SuperStars Alcohol and Drug Free Program that utilizes high school students to help encourage elementary school students to be drug free. He was a member of the Kelly Walsh yearbook and student newspaper staffs, and he was a four-year honor student. Born May 12, 1988, he is the son of Patty Platt and the late Brian Platt. Both his mother and father were college basketball players. His mom played at Midland Lutheran College (Neb.), and his father played at Casper College and Wayne State (Neb.). Platt was also recruited by Colorado State, Nevada, New Mexico, Pepperdine, San Diego, San Diego State, Stanford, UC Santa Barbara and Utah. 34 #45 Bienvenu Songondo Forward Sophomore Bangui, Central African Republic (Laurinburg Institute) : Bienvenu Songondo has been limited the past two seasons recovering from knee surgery he underwent during his final year of prep school. Perhaps no player benefitted more from Wyoming s preseason trip to Canada than did Songondo. He displayed to the Cowboy coaches that he was much more confident in his surgically-repaired knee, and he had a productive four games. If healthy, Songondo could give the Cowboy frontline a big boost, and Cowboys coaches believe this is the year he will take a big step forward. Songondo has also improved his strength over the offseason, which should improve his durability. One of the most athletic and skilled players on the team, he is also a big man who can run the court very well : Songondo played in eight games his redshirt freshman season -- versus CU-Colorado Springs, Weber State, at UNLV, vs. TCU, vs. BYU, vs. CSU, at San Diego State and at Utah. In the UCCS game, the redshirt freshman scored 14 points on 4 of 6 shooting from the field (.667) and 6 of 9 shooting from the freethrow line (.667). Songondo scored his 14 points against the UCCS Mountain Lions in only 10 minutes of play. He also grabbed one rebound and blocked one shot versus UCCS. Against UNLV on Feb. 4, Songondo grabbed five rebounds in 21 minutes of play. Songondo appeared in six Mountain West Conference games at UNLV, vs. TCU in Laramie, against BYU in Laramie, at home versus Colorado State, at SDSU and at Utah. He entered his redshirt freshman season as healthy as he had been in the past two years. He spent the summer of 2005 playing for his Central African Republic national team in Europe and in the African Championships. He played throughout the summer, and his previously injured knee held up well. He tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee his final year at Laurinburg Institute in Laurinburg, N.C., forcing him to miss virtually all of that season. He redshirted his first season at Wyoming in Songondo was offered scholarships by Georgetown and USC, in addition to Wyoming. Benny has battled some knee problems over the past two years, said UW head coach Steve McClain. He tore an ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) while in prep school, and he probably rushed trying to come back from that injury a little bit. He has gotten so much stronger and so much better in the short period of time he has been here. I think his future at Wyoming is great. I see a big upside for Benny down the road : Songondo redshirted. He came to Wyoming with a lot of potential and impressive physical skills, but was still learning the game and improving. High School/Personal: Songondo was a heavily recruited player in the spring of In addition to accepting a scholarship offer from Wyoming, Songondo was also offered scholarships by Georgetown and USC where he made official visits. His Laurinburg Institute team was selected as the preseason No. 1 prep school in the nation by TheInsidersHoops website entering the season. While injured for most of the season, Songondo s talents were evident by the schools who recruited him. He played for Chris Chaney at Laurinburg Institute. An outstanding all-around athlete, Songondo played soccer prior to turning his full attention to basketball. Born June 19, 1984, he is the son of Pauline and Paul Songondo.
