A Recap of the Week: Despite a great effort on the night, the Wyoming Cowgirl Basketball Team lost by the score of to BYU on Thursday night in Provo. It was a real half of runs with neither team really taking advantage of a lead. The Cowgirls opened the game with the hot hand scoring the first six points unanswered. The Cougars would answer back and eventually take the lead at 12-10, which would only grow to a four point advantage for them. With ten minutes left in the half, Ann McColl would hit four free shots in a row to give the Cowgirls a advantage. Despite losing the lead for only a few minutes, they would take a score into halftime. Ann McColl led all scorers for the Cowgirls with nine points, while the Cowgirls shot (.379) from the field in the half. The second half wasn t much different from the first with each team not really taking advantage of any scoring opportunities. But with 13 minutes left in the half, the Cougars went on a 12-5 run to take a lead. The only scoring from the Cowgirls came from Shelby Hoffman from the free throw line. That lead would grow to 12, as Wyoming would go on a three minute scoring slump. Unfortunately, it was too much to overcome for the Cowgirls as the Cougars were victorious, Sophomore Ann McColl was the leading scorer for the Cowgirls with 15 points along with five rebounds. Shelby Hoffman also chipped in 11 points. Unfortunately, the Cowgirls shot only (.309) from the field and only 3-16 (.188) from the three point line, despite outrebounding the Cougars The Cowgirls closed out their road trip with a loss to the Utah Utes on Saturday afternoon in Salt Lake. Utah started out of the gates quickly in the first half taking the early 12-8 lead. That advantage would grow to as large as 14, but the Cowgirls would manage to go into halftime only down by ten points with a halftime score. All eight Cowgirls scored in the half, as they were led by junior Heather Shaffner with seven points. It was all Wyoming to start the second half, as the Cowgirls would go on a 9-2 run and hold the Utes scoreless for eight minutes to begin the half. They would close the gap to five points at the 11 minute mark, and with eight and a half minutes left the game they would tie the score at 41 all. A basket by Lauren Beckman would give the Utes a two point lead, but a bucket and foul shot by Jessica Gibbs gave the Cowgirls their first lead of the game at The score would go back and forth between each team. With 1:17 left in the game, the Utes went up by four and with several foul shots would seal the victory, Wyoming was led by senior Jessica Gibbs, who finished the night with a team high 11 points and seven rebounds. The Cowgirls shot 37% from the field and only committed 11 turnovers. About New Mexico: The Cowgirls will host the New Mexico Lobos on Thursday night. About Brigham Young: I was really proud of the team s effort for about 30 minutes of this basketball game. I thought we played really hard, and the efforts been there all year. They just need to realize that the effort has a purpose and you can be out there doing some good things, it just has to have a purpose. I thought we really broke down defensively, we were getting beat on penetration and it was hard to recover. I don t really understand why, but we sometimes breakdown. When they went on a roll, we started to press and on the offensive end we started to struggle. I feel once our defense picks up, we can control penetration, and our offense will pick up. About Utah: I just thought it was a great effort. We talked about putting 40 minutes of basketball together and we did that tonight. We talked about doing a good job on their shooters, we did a good job containing their three-point shooters, holding them to 1-12 from the three-point line. Some key people stepped up and it was a great team effort. I was glad to see Jessica step up and have a good shooting night. She s been struggling a little and it was good to see her have a good game. Hoffman Moves Into First Place in Career Three- Point Field Goals: Senior guard Shelby Hoffman continues her climb into the Wyoming Cowgirl Basketball record book. On Friday, Jan. 5 against Texas Pan AM, Hoffman moved into first place in career three-point field goals with three in the game. With 35 on the season, she has 186 in her career. She overtook Courtney Stapp, who previously held the mark with 183.
