5 GAME REPORTS Game #137: Championship Classification- Horsham Hornets Boys 58 defeated Canberra Gunners Boys 48 Benjamin Hobbs was efficient in offensive for Horsham early and helped them generate an early advantage before finishing with 25 points. He led the charge at the defensive end too but once Charles Potter began to assert himself on the glass, Canberra ensured the margin would never grow too large. Game #138: Championship Classification- Gold Coast Waves Girls 40 defeated by Nunawading Spectres Girls 63 and by half-time. Paced by Tesa Mutimer (13 points) and Saskia Hupertz (nine), the Spectres shared the scoring load around and every player contributed. Gold Coast, led by Kalani Paulo (eight points) and Lilly Rotunno (eight), competed hard but could not quite bridge the gap. By three-quarter-time, the Victorian girls had extended their advantage to and went on with the job in the final period. Game #139: Championship Classification- Hawthorn Magic Boys 54 defeated by Diamond Valley Eagles Boys 79 Diamond Valley look to their forwards to get them going and the team-work of the Eagles was evident throughout the contest as their front court mixed well with their guards. Fast-break opportunities proved too much for the Magic to handle although their back court held their own. Game #140: Championship Classification- Canberra Capitals Girls 51 defeated Kalamunda Eastern Suns Girls 45 Eastern Suns had the better of a tight opening quarter to lead 7-4 at the first break. Claudea Andrews (17 points), Amy Cooper (eight) and Abby Solway and Kirby Smee (six each) were prominent as Canberra found their groove in the second quarter to build a advantage by half-time. Leading at three-quarter time and early in the fourth, the Capitals were in control but the Eastern Suns called time out and came out hustling. A three-pointer by Ella Thornton-Elliott (seven), a pair of triples by Hayley Alone (six) and consistent scoring by Brooke Malone (14) sparked a 13-4 run and suddenly the Suns were back in business trailing Keeley Dunbar (five) regained the momentum for Canberra though with two free throws and a key defensive play to seal the win. Game #141: Shield Classification- Willetton Tigers Girls 54 defeated Geraldton Buccaneers Girls 49 Consistent baskets from both teams meant this contest was up for grabs in the final term and Geraldton s work on the rebounds seemed to give them an edge. Willetton turned up their defensive pressure in the last couple of minutes though and a couple of timely stops, followed by some clutch free-throw shooting, gave them the victory. Game #142: Shield Classification- Darwin Cyclones Girls 56 defeated North West Tasmania Girls 44 Physical defence from the outset from Darwin was a concern for North West early and the Cyclones were finally able to garner a healthy margin with a third-quarter run. Hayley McKenna impressed for the Girls from the Apple Isle as did Zoe Crawford with her 16 points but Darwin s run proved too much to overcome. Game #143: Shield Classification- Maitland Mustangs Girls 62 defeated NT South Suns Girls 16 The Mustangs came out firing, getting to the hoop consistently, and Ella Bendeich had tallied 12 by half-time. The NT South girls worked hard but could not convert, struggling to cope with the Mustangs pressure and Maitland led 32-6 at the half. The Suns found some momentum in the third, with consecutive transition baskets thanks to Kaidence Fishook (five) and Shakira Richards (seven), though they were unable to stop Maitland from stretching the lead to by three-quarter time. Mercydes Metcalf (15), Isabella Jennings (15) and Bendeich (12) led the Mustangs scorers. GAME REPORTS CONTINUE ON NEXT PAGE...
6 Game #144: Shield Semi-Final- Coffs Harbour Suns Boys 44 defeated Newcastle Hunters Boys 42 Newcastle showcased their offensive rebounding and speed up the court early while Coffs Harbour found it difficult to find avenues to the rim. The Suns full-court press kept them in it though and their fitness was exemplary as they pushed ahead late in the game. A three-pointer from Kent Howell Azas made things interesting in the dying seconds but Coffs Harbour were able to hold on in a thriller. Game #145: Shield Semi-Final- Manly Sea Eagles Girls 40 defeated Southern District Spartans Girls 35 Only a handful of points separated these teams for the entire game, and the result hung in the balance until the final seconds. A three-pointer by Keeley Belford gave Southern Districts a 9-5 lead late in the first quarter but Manly hit back and it was tied 9-9 at the first break. Felicity Henderson (14 points) and Millie Prior (10) scored consistently for Manly, and Georgia Lane (18) led the Spartans charge. The Spartans led at the half and the Sea Eagles surged back to lead at the final break. One of the highlights of the fourth quarter was the battle of diminutive point guards Sienna Morison (Sea Eagles) and Josie Josiah (Spartans), who chased each other around the court. Big baskets by Henderson and Morison gave Manly a lead, and they went on to progress to the Shield Final. Game #146: Shield Classification- South Adelaide Panthers Boys 51 defeated North West Tasmania Boys 36 Nine North West players hit the scoreboard in this game, proving their excellent team play that they have displayed throughout the tournament. However, offensive rebounds hurt them in this meeting and the Panthers were able to execute on key plays in the second half with Zac De Vries leading the way. Game #147: Shield Classification- Joondalup Wolves Boys 62 defeated by Cairns Marlins Boys 71 Cairns looked more comfortable shooting from outside which was a dangerous tactic against the Wolves who continually looked to take advantage in the post. The Marlins hit their shots at a consistent rate throughout the game though and their efficiency proved too much for Joondalup in a strong win for the northern team. Game #148: Shield Classification- Northern Tasmania Girls 26 defeated by Newcastle Hunters Girls 59 Newcastle jumped Northern Tasmania in the opening minutes, quickly getting to a 9-0 lead. The Hunters defence remained solid for the entire first quarter, restricting the Tigers to 3 points. Newcastle racked up fouls in the second quarter but Northern Tasmania were unable to take advantage and trailed 23-7 at half-time. The third quarter was an up and down affair, and both teams got to the basket with relative ease. The Hunters took a lead into the final quarter and built on that with a 13-0 run. Northern Tasmania finished with a flurry but were unable to recover from the early onslaught and the Hunters ran out victors. Game #149: Shield Semi-Final- Townsville Heat Boys 52 defeated by Southern District Spartans Boys 65 Townsville played a strong offensive game, using their post players to their advantage while the guards set up the play well time and time again. However, the Spartans kept up their pressure on the ball and were eventually able to force mistakes and out in transition, Southern Districts shone. A tight game heading into the final break, the Spartans pulled away in the fourth quarter and were never chased down. Game #150: Shield Semi-Final- Southern Tigers Girls 57 defeated Illawarra Hawks Girls 51 Southern Tigers led 6-0 in the opening minutes and 12-6 before Illawarra s Maddie Dodson converted a three-point play to cut the deficit to at quarter-time. The Hawks had their chances but could not execute consistently and the Tigers always seemed to have their measure, extending their lead to at the half and by three-quarter time on the back of Chloe Dumesny (16 points), Hannah Newbury (15) and Abby Beeche (11). Illawarra, led by Georgina Mitchell (13), Zoe Roulston (10) and Audra Paskarnis (10), got as close as in the final minute but another Tigers basket gave the South Australians passage into the Shield Final. 7 Game #151: Championship Classification- Townsville Flames Girls 51 defeated South Adelaide Girls 40 This game was fast paced but when it mattered most, the Flames were cleaner with the ball while their work on the glass also proved integral. 19 points from Shaylee Browning helped ward off the efforts of South Adelaide players Tamika Lindsay and Maisie Van Der Jeugd who hit double-figures themselves. Game #152: Championship Classification- Norwood Flames Boys 64 defeated Sturt Sabres Boys 53 An exciting match with plenty of crowd support for both teams was won by Norwood as they finished with four players in double-figure scoring, paced by Callum Iseppi s 16 points. Curtis Scott drained two three-pointers and Aimable Rukundo Ciza Rutayisire collected a gamehigh 20 for Sturt to ensure things would remain close but the Flames held firm down the stretch. Game #153: Shield Classification- Northern Tasmania Boys 86 defeated NT South Suns Boys 50 After a basket for basket start, Northern Tasmania went on a 15-0 run to lead at the first break. The spirit of the Suns shone through in the second quarter, and they cut the Tigers lead back to eight as Deijahnelle Vaha led all scorers with 15 with five minutes left in the half. Northern Tasmania continued their full-court pressure to force consecutive turnovers, ending the Suns run and regaining momentum. The Tigers Joshua Garwood-Besanvalle (20) finished well around the hoop and by half-time, Northern Tasmania led James Bruce sparked another mini-run for NT South, pulling the lead back to six, but the Tigers resumed their full-court pressure, disrupting the Suns backcourt, and pushed the lead back out to double figures with the scoreboard finally taking its toll on the Suns. Game #154: Championship Semi-Final- Hornsby Spiders Girls 39 defeated Knox Raiders Girls 58 The Raiders continued their incredible run through the 2016 Under-14 s, with the focus again on the defensive end. Getting the stops they wanted early, Hornsby quickly found themselves trailing as Paige Price ran riot for Knox. She was joined by Alannah Chatfield and Charlisle Dunn who combined for 30 points to help answer the best efforts of Alana Goodchild s 26 points for the Spiders. Game #155: Championship Semi-Final- Knox Raiders Boys 53 defeated by Hills Hornets 63 Hills relished the role of underdogs against and led 4-0 after a nervous start from both teams. As expected, Knox responded through regular scorers Harrison Johnson (17 points) and Ivan Rajher (13) and led at the first break. The Hornets, led by Eoin Fitzgerald (23) and Joshua Gillon (18), clawed back to trail at half-time and went into the long break with a spring in their step. Knox suffered a blow early in the third quarter when big man Blake Stratton fouled out, then the teams traded baskets to three-quarter time and Knox led The game hung in the balance when Fitzgerald picked up his fourth foul early in the fourth quarter but he and Gillon made key baskets to give the Hornets a lead. A Daniel Paino lay-up stretched Hills lead to six with 19.2 seconds left, forcing Knox to call time out. Fitzgerald held his nerve at the free-throw line in the final seconds and the Hornets secured the first spot in the Championship Final.. Game #156: Championship Classification- Norths Bears Boys 56 defeated by Willetton Tigers Boys 62 Willetton had their girls team in attendance and the extra crowd support may have pulled them over the line in a physical and fast-paced encounter. The Tigers ball movement was special and allowed them to get a couple of looks from downtown which they drilled to open up a slim advantage. Thomas Musumeci s 22 points paced Willetton and helped them hold off a determined Bears team led by William Boys.. Game #157: Championship Classification- Sturt Sabres Girls 47 defeated by Melbourne Tigers Girls 55 With an aim to drive into the key and force the Melbourne forwards to defend hard, Sturt found themselves getting to the line and as they knocked down their free-throws, they ensured this game would go down to the wire. The Tigers were able to answer with their field goal shooting though and in a back and forth affair in the final term, the likes of Laura Hamilton (who hit a big time three-pointer) got Melbourne over the line. 8 Game #158: Shield Classification- Geraldton Buccaneers Boys 43 defeated Darwin Cyclones Boys 35 Both teams attacked the rim in an exciting first quarter. Geraldton s Richard Bartlett (nine points) proved a handful as he created for his team-mates. Darwin concentrated on their transition game and the scores were tied at quarter-time. The Buccaneers then led after three, as Darwin s Billy Paterson (16) established himself as a force under the bucket and Xavier Wright (16) finished well for Geraldton. The final quarter lacked control from both teams but remained intense. Hustle on the offensive boards and unselfish transition play gave the Buccaneers a 10-point advantage heading into the final two minutes, and they held their nerve to win. Game #159: Championship Semi-Final- Diamond Valley Eagles Girls 37 defeated by Bendigo Braves Girls 50 A significant rebounding edge helped Bendigo take control in this meeting, freeing their guards up to stream down the floor and relentlessly attack Diamond Valley in the paint. The Eagles had their chances from the free-throw line but were not as efficient as the Braves with Abby Hildebrand (13 points) the only Diamond Valley player to hit double-figures. Piper Dunlop was exceptional for Bendigo, pacing them with 29 points including seven important shots from the charity stripe. Game #160: Championship Semi-Final- North Adelaide Rockets Boys 38 defeated by Sydney Comets Boys 56 The key to this game was how Sydney would deal with the size, strength and firepower of North Adelaide Rockets top gun Fiston Ipassou, who averaged 34 points a game heading into this Championship Semi Final. The Comets rotated defenders on Ipassou and never gave him a moment s peace and that took the Rockets out of their rhythm. In contrast, Sydney playmaker Jordan Roman ensured the Comets settled into their tempo and by half-time they led Ipassou broke away to throw down a two-handed dunk during the third quarter but it was a rare highlight for the Rockets, who could not sustain any sort of defensive pressure and the Comets always looked comfortable to. set up an all-nsw Championship Final against Hills.
