In all, they return ten letterwinners. *Seven of the ten returning letterwinners played in 16 games or more in which included four sophomores and three true freshmen. *Seven underclassmen played in a combined 183 games and 4,028 minutes a year ago, including all 30 games by sophomores Jodi Bolerjack, Dominique Sisk, Hanna Zavecz and true freshman Megan McGuffey. Four upperclassmen accounted for 96 games and 2,022 minutes. *Two of the top returning players are juniors Jodi Bolerjack and Hanna Zavecz. A forward from Melbourne, Australia, Zavecz led the team with 14.4 points, 6.7 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 2.3 steals which helped her earn First Team All-MWC and Defensive Player of the Year honors. Bolerjack, a 5-9 guard from Columbia, Mo., averaged 13.3 points per game to earn Third Team All-MWC honors. The other returning starter is Rebecca Vanderjagt. A 6-3, forward from Townsville, Australia, she averaged 2.6 points and 2.4 rebounds in her first year with the Cowgirls. *Several other players who will be contributors for the Cowgirls this season include seniors Annie Gorenstein and Angiah Harris, juniors Amy Bolerjack and Dominique Sisk and sophomores Elisabeth Dissen, Alysia Kraft and Newcomer of the Year Megan McGuffey. *Wyoming returns all fi ve major statistical category leaders to the team from the season. Sophomore Hanna Zavecz was fi rst in points (14.4 ppg), rebounds (6.7 rpg), assists (3.9 aspg), steals (2.3 spg) and blocked shots (1.3 bpg). She also ranked among the Top 10 in all of the categories in the MWC. *The Cowgirls welcome six newcomers to this year's team, which includes four freshmen and a transfer. Mallory Cline (6-4, C, Wiley, Colo.); Gemma Koehler (6-1, F, Geelong, Australia); Megan Mordecai (5-10, G, Gillette, Wyo.),Justyna Podziemska (6-2, F, Wroclaw, Poland), Tahnee Robinson (5-10, G, Ft. Washakie, Wyo.) and Aubrey Vandiver (5-11, G, Laramie, Wyo.). *Cline comes to Wyoming after an outstanding career at McClave High School. She was a three-time Colorado Class 1A All-State selection, while helping her team to three Colorado 1A state championships. Tahnee Robinson was a four-time All- Conference and All-State selection at Lander Valley High School, who led her team to a 25-5 mark and the 3A State Championship in 2006, while Aubrey Vandiver was a two-time First Team All-Conference and All-State pick at Laramie High School. Two other players who can help the Cowgirls are Gemma Koehler and Justyna Podziemska. Koehler joined the program in January of 2006 after attending Sacred Heart High School in Geelong, Australia, while Podziemska earned First Team All- Conference, All-Region IX and WCCAC Player of the Year honors the past two years at Casper College. *For the third year in a row and 13 out of the last 14 seasons, the Cowgirls will have a set of twins. Amy and Jodi Bolerjack, from Columbia, Missouri, will enter their third year of competition with the Cowgirls. Jodi played in all 30 games in her second season while averaging 13.3 points and 1.7 assists per game. Amy sat out last year with an injury. *Wyoming's schedule includes seven teams that participated in either the NCAA Tournament or WNIT (BYU, Idaho State, Kansas State, New Mexico, UNLV, TCU and Utah). BYU, New Mexico and Utah all finished the season ranked in the final ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll. *Wyoming had eight Academic All-MWC selections in the conference this past season. (Jodi Bolerjack, Elisabeth Dissen, Erin Hicks, Alysia Kraft, Megan McGuffey, Michelle Taylor, Rebecca Vanderjagt, Hanna Zavecz). The following information is presented to assist the working media in its coverage of the season. The Wyoming Media Relations Offi ce will be available through the year to assist year. Credential Requests Requests for the media area and photo credentials should be directed to Assistant Media Relations Director Amy Dambro and the University of Wyoming Media Relations Offi ce. Her number is Press-pass requests should be made at least 24 hours prior to game time, Credentials will either be mailed, or will be held at the Will Call Window, located at the west side of the Arena-Auditorium at the athletics ticket offi ce. Arena Auditorium Wyoming's Arena Auditorium is located on Willett Drive in Laramie, just north of War Memorial Stadium and the Fieldhouse complex. Media parking is located to the south and west of the Double A, in the "FA" lot. Will Call is located a the Willett West entrace to the Double A. Post Game Procedures Members of the Media Relations staff will escort media representatives to the media room at the top of the truck ramp. Head Coach Joe Legerski and requested Cowgirl players will come to the room. Opponent coaches and players will be interviewed outside their locker room. Legerski and Player Interviews All interview requests for head coach Joe Legerski or any players should be made through the UW Athletics Media and Public Relations Offi ce, , at least 24 hours in advance. Players are available as their class schedules, practices and meetings permit. Players will not be available until post-game on game days. Media members are also required to check with the Wyoming Media Relations Offi ce prior to attending any Cowgirl practice session. Conference Call Joe Legerski will conduct a conference call every week during the season. The day will vary, so contact the MR offi ce for more information. 4 Cowgirl Basketball... 4/4/4 Cowgirl Notes Cowgirl Tidbits from the Season -With the win over Oregon State on Saturday, March 18, it gave the Cowgirls 21 wins, which was the most wins since the season when they went The previous high was 18 wins during the season. -The Cowgirls have participated in postseason play three times in school history. All have come in the WNIT in 1989, 2003 and now They have an overall record of The Cowgirls longest winning streak during the season was eight games, which was the longest since the season when they won ten and nine straight during the year. They also did not lose more than two-straight games this season. -The MWC stood at #6 in the RPI according to collegerpi.com and rpiratings. com as of March 12, Six teams ranked in the top 65 including the Cowgirls. They were 61st through games on Sunday, March 12, Wyoming s nine losses came against teams in the top 80 in the RPI. They were 5-9 against the top 100 in RPI. -For several weeks in a row, the Cowgirls received votes in the Associated Press Poll. They ranked 41st with three votes in games through March 13. They received votes for the week of Jan. 2 as well. -The ten conference victories tied them with the most conference wins in school history. They went 10-4 during the season as members of the Intermountain Athletic Conference. Bolerjack, Hicks, McGuffey and Zavecz Garner All-Conference honors: Four Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team members were recognized as the Mountain West Conference announced the 2006 All-Conference Team. Forward Hanna Zavecz earned First Team All-Conference and Defensive Player of the Year honors for the fi rst time in her career. Guard Jodi Bolerjack was named to the Third Team, while Erin Hicks was an Honorable Mention All-MWC honoree. Freshman Megan Mc- Guffey got the nod for Newcomer of Year in her fi rst season with the Cowgirls. Zavecz averaged a team leading 14.4 points, 6.7 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 2.3 steals per game. She ranked among the Top 10 in assists (3.94 aspg), blocked shots (1.12 bpg), rebounding (6.6 rpg), scoring (13.7 ppg) and steals (2.06 spg) in league play. Zavecz tallied 12 double-fi gure scoring games, which included a stretch of seven games in a row. Bolerjack was second on the team in scoring with 13.3 points per contest. In conference games, she was fi rst in three-point fi eld goals made (2.62 tpfgm), fourth in free throw percentage (.857) and three-point fi eld goal percentage (.416) and seventh in scoring (13.9 ppg). Hicks, who was an Honorable Mention selection last year, fi nished her conference season averaging 9.8 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. She also ranked among the Top 15 in assists, fi eld goal percentage, rebounding and steals. Freshman Megan McGuffey was also recognized as the Newcomer of the Year. Four Cowgirls starters fi nished the night in double-fi gures, including two with double-doubles. Sophomore Hanna Zavecz had a team high 18 points and 13 rebounds, while freshman Megan McGuffey chipped in 13 points and a career high ten boards. Jodi Bolerjack had 13 points followed by Michelle Taylor with ten. Wyoming shot (.404) from the fi eld and (.789) from the free throw line. Oregon State was led by Kim Butler with 18 points and seven rebounds. Casey Nash had seven rebounds as well. The Beavers shot (.373) from the fi eld, but committed 17 turnovers. A Recap of the Nebraska Game: The Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team (21-9 overall) had their season ended in the second round of the WNIT with a disappointing loss against the Nebraska Cornhuskers (19-12 overall) on Wednesday night in Laramie. Wyoming had two players in double-fi gures, including Hanna Zavecz. She fi nished with 27 points, six rebounds, three steals and two assists. Air Force, Brigham Young, Colorado State, New Mexico, UNLV, San Diego State and Utah joined Wyoming in forming the conference. There was a new addition to the conference as well as the TCU Horned Frogs became members of the MWC in July of 2005 Four teams participated in the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament and Women's Invitation Tournament. 7 JOE LEGERSKI (WYOMING, 1979) University of Wyoming, Head Women's Basketball Coach Cowgirl Basketball... 7/7/7 Head Coach Joe Legerski Joe Legerski, who coached at Utah for 12 seasons, heads in to his fourth season as the head women's basketball coach at the University of Wyoming. He was named head coach on May 1, 2003 and became the sixth head coach in Cowgirl history. He recorded his fi rst career coaching victory on Dec. 13, 2003, as Wyoming defeated Montana State Billings, His first conference win came on Jan. 17, 2004 against MWC rival BYU. In his fi rst season, he guided the Cowgirls to an record overall and a 6-8 mark in the Mountain West Conference including their first ever Mountain West Conference Tournament victory in school history. Two Cowgirls also garnered All-Conference awards as he earned MWC Coach of the Year honors in his fi rst year with the program. In , he helped the Cowgirls to a overall mark, along with a 7-7 record and a fourth place fi nish in the MWC. It was the best finish for a Cowgirl team since the season, and the highest they'd finished in conference play since They swept BYU for the first time since and earned Legerski vs. Mountain West Opponent H A N Total vs. Air Force vs. BYU vs. Colorado State vs. New Mexico vs. San Diego State vs. TCU vs. UNLV vs. Utah Total a win over the Colorado Buffaloes which snapped a 13-game losing streak. Three Cowgirls earned All-MWC awards including Ashley Elliott who earned First Team All-MWC honors for the second year in a row. During the season, the Cowgirls completed the year 21-9 overall, while finishing 10-6 overall in the Mountain West Conference. They made an appearance in the WNIT for only the third time in school history. The 21-wins were the most since the season when they went 24-8 and the ten conference victories ties an all-time school record which was set in Three Cowgirls garnered All-Conference honors, including Hanna Zavecz who earned First Team All-MWC and Defensive Player of the Year honors along with Megan McGuffey who took home the Newcomer of the Year. Legerski, 49, came to Wyoming following a highly-successful stint at the University of Utah. As an assistant ( ), and later associate head coach ( ) for Elaine Elliott, he was part of the most successful women s program in the history of both the Western Athletic and Mountain West Conferences. The Utes compiled a record while he was there, including seven league titles. They were in conference play. During the season, Utah won the MWC with a 12-2 conference mark. The Utes were 24-7 overall, and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, before falling to Duke. Legerski earned a bachelor of science degree in business education from UW in He was an assistant with the Cowgirls from 1987 through 1991, before taking the Utah position. He was the head women s basketball coach at Western Wyoming College (Rock Springs) for one season, finishing second in the region. Prior to that he was the head women s basketball coach at Rock Springs High from 1984 to This University has always held a special place in my life, and to have an opportunity to come back is a chance most do not receive, Legerski said. The commitment to this program is at the highest level. After visiting with several individuals, and seeing the facilities, I have a great sense of how much support there is for the program. Today is a new start for all of us, and I look forward to rolling up my sleeves and going to work. During his second season at Utah, in 1992, Legerski coached the best post duo in the league in Mikki Kane-Barton and Susana Tauteoli. Kane- Barton was named the 1993 WAC Most Valuable Player, and MVP of the Western Athletic Conference tournament. He also helped develop Amber McEwen into a two-time First Team All-Conference selection, and the 1996 WAC Player of the Year. Legerski, and his wife, Jamie, are parents of three children, stepson Zane, 20, daughter Madison, 11, and son Joseph III, 9. 8 Cowgirl Basketball... 8/8/8 Assistant Coaches Gerald Mattinson Associate Head Basketball Coach, Weber State '81 Gerald Mattinson enters his fourth season on the Cowgirl coaching staff and his fi rst as an associate head coach. Prior to that, he spent two years two years as the Principal at East Junior High School in Rock Springs, Wyo. He began his college basketball career as a student-athlete at Casper College for head coach Oscar Swede Ericson. While there, he was a First Team All- American and All-Region selection in Mattinson then moved onto a three-year career at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah. He earned All-Conference honors twice during his career for head coach Neil McCarthy. A two-time Academic All-American selection, he graduated from Weber State with a bachelor s of science degree in business education in He completed a master s of sports science degree from the United States Sports Academy in 1988 and earned his principal endorsement from the University of Wyoming. Mattinsons professional coaching career began at Weber State as a graduate assistant coach with the men s basketball program during the season. From , he was the head boy s basketball coach at Rock Springs High School. He earned Wyoming State Coach of the Year honors and was named Conference Coach of the Year twice. From , Mattinson was an assistant men's coach at Western Wyoming Community College. He was elevated to an Assistant Athletics Director and the Head Men s Basketball Coach in 1991 and held the position until For the season, he became an assistant with the women s program for one year. Mattinson had been a business education teacher at Rock Springs High School since 1982 before taking his current position in June of Mattinson, and his wife, Carey are the parents of three children, stepson Morgan Splichal (22), stepdaughter Tiffany Splichal (20) and son Ashton (10). Kristin Becker Assistant Basketball Coach, Vanderbilt '90 Becker comes to Wyoming after spending the last two years as the project manager for the Fort Riley Housing Expansion Project in Manhattan, Kansas. Prior to that, she was an assistant coach at Kansas State University for six seasons ( ). She served as the recruiting coordinator for the Wildcats, helping to bring in some of the program s best players including WNBA draft pick Nicole Ohlde. During that time, KSU advanced to the NCAA Tournament three consecutive years, including a Sweet 16 appearance in The team also won their fi rst ever Big 12 Title during the season while fi nishing with a mark of 26-8 overall and 11-5 in the league. The previous two seasons, she served as an assistant coach at Vanderbilt under veteran coach Jim Foster. In each of her years with the program, the Commodores qualifi ed for the NCAA Tournament, including a trip to the 1997 NCAA Sweet Sixteen, and fi nished with an overall record of From , she served as an assistant coach at Loyola University in Chicago before becoming the interim head coach for one season ( ). Her professional coaching career started as a graduate assistant at Southern Illinois University from She began her college career as a student-athlete at Vanderbilt playing for the Commodores from and was a member of the program s fi rst NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearance team in A three-time All-SEC Academic Honor Roll selection, she earned CoSIDA Academic All-District honors and was named Female Commodore of the Year her senior year. After her collegiate career, Becker played professionally for two years in Spain for La Universidad Complutense de Madrid before moving on to Southern Illinois as a graduate assistant. A native of New Berlin, Wis., she graduated magna cum laude from Vanderbilt in 1990 with a degree in secondary education. She went on to earn a master s degree in Spanish and linguistics from Southern Illinois in Katie Kern Assistant Basketball Coach, New Mexico '99 Kern joins the program after spending the last three seasons as the top assistant coach at the University of Alaska Anchorage. She was involved in the day to day operations of the program including academics, assisting with practices, recruiting and scouting. She began her college basketball career as a student-athlete at the University of New Mexico for head coach Don Flanagan. A four-year letterwinner for the Lobos, she was a fi rst team All-Western Athletic Conference selection in 1999, while being named to the WAC All-Tournament Team (1998) and the All-Newcomer Team (1996). Over those years, the team had a combined record of overall and in the WAC, which included a 24-7 record, a 12-2 conference mark and a fi rst place fi nish in the league during the season. Kern still ranks among the top 15 in school history in scoring, rebounding and blocked shots. A three-time Academic All-WAC selection, she earned her bachelor s degree in communications in 1999 and her master s degree in physical education and sport administration in 2003 both from the University of New Mexico. Following her career, she played two seasons of professional basketball in Germany and Luxembourg. Kerns professional coaching career begin at the University of New Mexico as a graduate assistant coach from During that time, she assisted in several aspects of the program including on campus recruiting, fi lm exchange, game day operations and organizing all recruiting mail-outs. She then moved on to the University of Alaska Anchorage as an assistant coach, where she has been for the last three years. Mary Grothe Director of Basketball Operations, Lynchburg '04 Mary Grothe is in her second season as director of basketball operations and with the University of Wyoming Cowgirl basketball program. Grothe came to Wyoming after spending a year ( ) at Texas A&M-Commerce University (Commerce City, Texas) as a graduate assistant with the Lion basketball program. She assisted in several aspects of the program, including scheduling of games, assisting with practices and recruiting, along with directing the TAMU-C summer basketball camp. A native of Ohio, Grothe earned her bachelor's degree in health movement science and recreation from Lynchburg College in 2004 and recently completed her master's degree in health and kinesiology from Texas A&M University-Commerce in the summer of She began her college basketball career as a student-athlete at Lynchburg College in Lynchburg, Virginia. A four-year letterwinner for the Hornets, she was a team captain while helping her team to a overall record during her junior and senior seasons. An excellent student, she was on the Dean's List from and was very involved in many scholastic activities.
