2 Cowgirl Basketball... 2/2/2 Media Inormation-Notes Welcome to the University o Wyoming and Cowgirl Basketball. The ollowing inormation is presented to assist the working media in its coverage o the season. The Wyoming Media Relations Oi ce will be available through the year to assist year. Credential Requests Requests or the media area and photo credentials should be directed to Assistant Media Relations Director Amy Dambro and the University o Wyoming Media Relations Oi ce. Her number is Press-pass requests should be made at least 24 hours prior to game time, Credentials will either be mailed, or will be held at the Will Call Window, located at the west side o the Arena-Auditorium at the athletics ticket oi ce. Arena Auditorium Wyoming's Arena Auditorium is located on Willett Drive in Laramie, just north o War Memorial Stadium and the Fieldhouse complex. Media parking is located to the south and west o the Double A, in the "FA" lot. Will Call is located a the Willett West entrace to the Double A. Post Game Procedures Members o the Media Relations sta will escort media representatives to the media room at the top o the truck ramp. Head Coach Joe Legerski and requested Cowgirl players will come to the room. Opponent coaches and players will be interviewed outside their locker room. Legerski and Player Interviews All interview requests or head coach Joe Legerski or any players should be made through the UW Athletics Media and Public Relations Oi ce, , at least 24 hours in advance. Players are available as their class schedules, practices and meetings permit. Players will not be available until post-game on game days. Media members are also required to check with the Wyoming Media Relations Oi ce prior to attending any Cowgirl practice session. The game is set to tip o at 7:00 p.m. in the Arena Auditorium. The Utes are currently 14-6 overall and 7-0 in the Mountain West Conerence. They are led by Morgan Warburton who is averaging 15.6 points and 4.3 reobunds per game. She is ollowed by Kalee Whipple who is adding 10.1 points and six boards a contest. They return two starters and eight letterwinners to a team that went 27-7 overall, 12-4 in the MWC, while making it to the Elite Eight a year ago. The Cowgirls and the Utes have met 59 times previously in this series. Utah leads the series The last time the two teams met was March 4, Utah won the game in overtime by a i nal o Utah is coached by Elaine Elliott who is in her 24th season with the program. Scouting the Lobos: Wyoming continue conerence play over the weekend as they play the New Mexico Lobos, on Sunday, Feb. 4. The game will begin at 1:00 p.m. at University Arena in Albuquerque. The Lobos are currenlty 13-7 overall and 3-4 in MWC play. They are led by Julie Briody who is averaging a team leading 15.9 points, while adding 5.1 rebounds per game. She is ollowed by Dionne Marsh who is adding 13.1 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. They return three starters and seven letterwinners to a team that went overall and 11-5 in the Mountain West Conerence a year ago. The Cowgirls and the Lobos have met 51 times previously in this series. New Mexico leads the series The last time the two teams met was January 4, 2007 when the Cowgirls deeated the Lobos in Laramie. They are coached by Don Flanagan, who is in his 12th season with the program. 3 Cowgirl Basketball... 3/3/3 Notes Zavecz or 1,000: Junior Hanna Zavecz recently reached 1,000 points or her career. With a 17 point scoring night against New Mexico (1/4/07), she surpassed the mark and currently ranks tenth overall in school history with 1,098. She also looks to move up in career assists, steals, blocked shots and three-point i eld goals made in the Cowgirl record book. Road Warriors: The Cowgirls played only three home games during the nonconerence. Ater playing their home opener against San Francisco, on Nov. 12, they played the next seven o eight on the road, coming home only once against Colorado (Nov. 21, 2006) during that time. Ater almost a month on the road, they closed out home play beore Christmas against Utah State (Dec. 17). Bolerjack or three: Junior guard Jodi Bolerjack started o the season on i re beyond the arc. Dating back to the second hal o the San Francisco (11/12/06) game, she hit 14 consecutive three-point i eld goals. She was a perect 6-6 against Northern Colorado (11/15/07), 4-4 against Kansas State and 3-6 against San Francisco. She hit her i rst shot against Colorado beore missing, but went 4-6 in that game. Bolerjack currently ranks i th all-time in school history in that category with 120 or her career. Familiar aces: The Cowgirls have seen some amiliar aces on the opponent bench this season. Former assistant Abby Conklin ( ) is now an assistant coach at the University o San Francisco, while Jaime White is now the head coach at Northern Colorado. Bolerjack named MWC Player o the Week: Jodi Bolerjack was named the Mountain West Conerence Women s Basketball Player o the Week (Nov. 20, 2006), earning her i rst career honor. The Columbia, Mo., native averaged 20 points and three assists in two games, shooting 78 percent (14-o-18) rom the i eld and 100 percent (10-o-10) rom beyond the arc. In the Cowgirls romp past Northern Colorado, Bolerjack was perect rom the i eld (10-o-10) and rom three-point range (6-o-6), i nishing with a career high 28 points, including a career-high-tying six three-pointers. She sparked a 22-2 run against the Bears, netting all o her 16 i rst-hal points during the surge that lited Wyoming rom a 7-6 dei cit to a 28-9 advantage. Bolerjack ollowed that up with a career high 45 minutes in a double-overtime heartbreaker to Kansas State. She scored 12 points and had one blocked shot against the Wildcats, extending her three-point i eld goal streak to 13 with 4-o-4 shooting rom beyond the arc. Zavecz Named To Coors Classic All-Tournament Team: Junior Hanna Zavecz earned All-Tournament Team honors at the 20th Annual Coors Classic, Nov , in Boulder, Colo. The orward rom Melbourne, Australia averaged 19.5 points, three rebounds, 2.5 assists, one blocked shot and one steal per game. She was (.611) rom the i eld and (.762) rom the ree throw line. She recorded a season high 23 points against Nevada (11/25/06). McGuey named MWC Player o the Week: Sophomore Megan McGuey was named the Mountain West Conerence Women s Basketball Co-Player o the Week with New Mexico's Dionne Marsh or the week o Nov. 27, Mc- Guey, a 5-11 sophomore rom Cheyenne, Wyo., came o the bench scored to score a season-high 19 points and six rebounds, while shooting 7-or-11 (.636) rom the i eld and 3-or-4 (.750) rom the ree-throw line against Charlotte. Against the 49ers, her three point i eld goal at the 8:30 mark put the Cowgirls up or good as they went on or the win McGuey ollowed that up by playing a season high 30 minutes, scoring 12 points and collecting i ve rebounds against Nevada. Against the Bus, she was the second-leading scorer with 14 points and our rebounds, while tying her career-high shooting 4-o-5 (.800) rom the i eld. For the week, McGuey averaged 15.0 points and 5.0 rebounds, while dishing out two assists and three steals. She shot 68.2 percent rom the i eld (15-or-22) and was 11-or-12 at the ree-throw line (.917). Vandiver named MWC Player o the Week: Freshman Aubrey Vandiver was named the Mountain West Conerence Women s Basketball Player o the Week or the week o January 22, The Laramie, Wyo., native, led the Cowgirls to two double-digit home conerence wins last week. In a victory over San Diego State, Vandiver recorded her i rst career double-double with a career-high 23 points and 10 rebounds. She scored the i nal our points o an 11-point run to give Wyoming a advantage at the hal beore netting 15 points in the second hal. She shot a career-high 7-or-11 (.636) rom the i eld and was 2-or-3 rom beyond the arc, while swiping a career-high three steals. In a win over then No. 23 TCU, Vandiver hit our consecutive ree throws to give the Cowgirls a lead with 6:50 let in the game. She recorded 10 points in 22 minutes o play and was a perect 6-or-6 rom the line. On the week. Vandiver shot 60 percent rom the i eld (9-or-15) and was perect rom the charity stripe (13-or-13). She had 13 rebounds and 33 points to go along with three steals and three assists. Legerski reaches 50th and 60th wins: With the victory over Northern Colorado (11/15/06), head coach Joe Legerski reached 50 wins or his career. He earned his 60th career victory with a win against TCU (1/20/07). His current record is (.585) overall. Cowgirls Picked Fith in MWC Preseason Poll: The Mountain West Conerence announced its preseason women s basketball poll and all-conerence team today at its Basketball Media Day held at the Aladdin Hotel. The voting panel consisted o the league s nine head coaches and select women s basketball media. New Mexico was tabbed as the preseason avorite by a slim margin ater i nishing tied or third place in last year s regular-season standings. New Mexico received eight o 19 i rst-place votes and 137 total points. BYU had seven i rst-place votes and i nished second with 134 points, ollowed by TCU with our i rst-place votes and 126 points. Utah (102 points) placed ourth, ollowed by Wyoming (96 points), UNLV (71 points), San Diego State (41 points), Air Force (39 points) and Colorado State (36 points). New Mexico junior orward Dionne Marsh earned Top Returning Player honors, while Justyna Podziemska o Wyoming was named Top Newcomer. Four o the nine MWC teams were represented on the all-conerence team, including two seniors and three juniors. Marsh is a two-time all-mwc selection, including a i rst team pick last season. Four upperclassmen accounted or 96 games and 2,022 minutes. *Two o the top returning players are juniors Jodi Bolerjack and Hanna Zavecz. A orward rom Melbourne, Australia, Zavecz led the team with 14.4 points, 6.7 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 2.3 steals which helped her earn First Team All-MWC and Deensive Player o the Year honors. Bolerjack, a 5-9 guard rom Columbia, Mo., averaged 13.3 points per game to earn Third Team All-MWC honors. The other returning starter is Rebecca Vanderjagt. A 6-3, orward rom Townsville, Australia, she averaged 2.6 points and 2.4 rebounds in her irst year with the Cowgirls. *Several other players who will be contributors or the Cowgirls this season include seniors Annie Gorenstein and Angiah Harris, juniors Amy Bolerjack and Dominique Sisk and sophomores Elisabeth Dissen and Newcomer o the Year Megan McGuey. *Wyoming returns all i ve major statistical category leaders to the team rom the season. Sophomore Hanna Zavecz was i rst in points (14.4 ppg), rebounds (6.7 rpg), assists (3.9 aspg), steals (2.3 spg) and blocked shots (1.3 bpg). She also ranked among the Top 10 in all o the categories in the MWC. *The Cowgirls welcome i ve newcomers to this year's team, which includes our reshmen and a transer. Mallory Cline (6-4, C, Wiley, Colo.); Gemma Koehler (6-1, F, Geelong, Australia); Megan Mordecai (5-10, G, Gillette, Wyo.),Justyna Podziemska (6-2, F, Wroclaw, Poland) and Aubrey Vandiver (5-11, G, Laramie, Wyo.). *Cline comes to Wyoming ater an outstanding career at McClave High School. She was a three-time Colorado Class 1A All-State selection, while helping her team to three Colorado 1A state championships. Aubrey Vandiver was a two-time First Team All-Conerence and All-State pick at Laramie High School. Two other players who can help the Cowgirls are Gemma Koehler and Justyna Podziemska. Koehler joined the program in January o 2006 ater attending Sacred Heart High School in Geelong, Australia, while Podziemska earned First Team All-Conerence, All-Region IX and WCCAC Player o the Year honors the past two years at Casper College. *For the third year in a row and 13 out o the last 14 seasons, the Cowgirls will have a set o twins. Amy and Jodi Bolerjack, rom Columbia, Missouri, will enter their third year o competition with the Cowgirls. Jodi played in all 30 games in her second season while averaging 13.3 points and 1.7 assists per game. Amy sat out last year with an injury. *Wyoming's schedule includes eight teams that participated in either the NCAA Tournament or WNIT (BYU, Charlotte, Idaho State, Kansas State, New Mexico, UNLV, TCU and Utah). 9 Cowgirl Basketball... 9/9/ Cowgirl Notes Cowgirl Tidbits rom the Season -With the win over Oregon State on Saturday, March 18, it gave the Cowgirls 21 wins, which was the most wins since the season when they went The previous high was 18 wins during the season. -The Cowgirls have participated in postseason play three times in school history. All have come in the WNIT in 1989, 2003 and now They have an overall record o The Cowgirls longest winning streak during the season was eight games, which was the longest since the season when they won ten and nine straight during the year. They also did not lose more than two-straight games this season. -The MWC stood at #6 in the RPI according to collegerpi.com and rpiratings. com as o March 12, Six teams ranked in the top 65 including the Cowgirls. They were 61st through games on Sunday, March 12, Wyoming s nine losses came against teams in the top 80 in the RPI. They were 5-9 against the top 100 in RPI. -For several weeks in a row, the Cowgirls received votes in the Associated Press Poll. They ranked 41st with three votes in games through March 13. They received votes or the week o Jan. 2 as well. -The ten conerence victories tied them with the most conerence wins in school history. They went 10-4 during the season as members o the Intermountain Athletic Conerence. Bolerjack, Hicks, McGuey and Zavecz Garner All-Conerence honors: Four Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team members were recognized as the Mountain West Conerence announced the 2006 All-Conerence Team. Forward Hanna Zavecz earned First Team All-Conerence and Deensive Player o the Year honors or the i rst time in her career. Guard Jodi Bolerjack was named to the Third Team, while Erin Hicks was an Honorable Mention All-MWC honoree. Freshman Megan Mc- Guey got the nod or Newcomer o Year in her i rst season with the Cowgirls. Zavecz averaged a team leading 14.4 points, 6.7 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 2.3 steals per game. She ranked among the Top 10 in assists (3.94 aspg), blocked shots (1.12 bpg), rebounding (6.6 rpg), scoring (13.7 ppg) and steals (2.06 spg) in league play. Zavecz tallied 12 double-i gure scoring games, which included a stretch o seven games in a row. Bolerjack was second on the team in scoring with 13.3 points per contest. In conerence games, she was i rst in three-point i eld goals made (2.62 tpgm), ourth in ree throw percentage (.857) and three-point i eld goal percentage (.416) and seventh in scoring (13.9 ppg). Hicks, who was an Honorable Mention selection last year, i nished her conerence season averaging 9.8 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. She also ranked among the Top 15 in assists, i eld goal percentage, rebounding and steals. Freshman Megan McGuey was also recognized as the Newcomer o the Year. The 5-11 guard rom Cheyenne, Wyo. averaged 7.5 points and 4.9 rebounds per game in league play. She was one o two reshman to be ranked among the Top 30 in scoring and the only reshman to be ranked in the Top 20 in rebounding in league play.
