Last Time Out: Aztecs Drop Home Finale The San Diego State women s basketball team concluded its regular season with a loss to visiting New Mexico Saturday at Cox Arena. The Lobos used a plus-17 margin on the boards and 37 trips to the free-throw line to improve to 21-8 overall and 11-5 in league action, while the Aztecs fell to overall and 5-11 in conference play. SDSU got 13 points from both freshman guard Quenese Davis (Sacramento, Calif.) and junior forward Shannon Clay (Inglewood, Calif.), who matched her season high with her fourth-straight game in double-figure scoring. Clay also added a team-high eight rebounds and three blocks, while Davis contributed five rebounds and three assists in her 34 minutes of action. Playing in her final home contest, senior Desiree Johnson (Kahuku, Hawaii) had eight points, four boards and three assists. After New Mexico opened the afternoon with the first basket, SDSU took the lead on a three-pointer by Shanna Demus (Palmdale, Calif.). The Aztecs maintained their advantage for almost 10 minutes, going up by as many as seven, before the Lobos went on an 11-0 run to jump ahead, New Mexico twice held a seven-point lead in the first half, but SDSU had the deficit down to just three on a Davis jumper at the buzzer, The Lobos got two quick baskets coming out of the locker room and their lead got to double-figures at the 16:05 mark on a layup by Julie Briody at The Aztecs moved to within six on a pair of back-to-back Davis buckets, but would never get any closer, as New Mexico went up by as many as 21 points, before claiming the victory. SDSU actually outshot New Mexico by two percentage points from the field (34.7 to 32.7), but the Lobos owned a advantage on the glass and converted on an SDSU opponent season-high 30 of their 37 free-throw attempts Mountain West Conference Championships Thomas & Mack Center (Las Vegas, Nev.) SDSU History In The MWC Tournament SDSU MWC Seed History No. 9 (2006); No. 8 (2005) No. 7 (2007, 2004, 2003, 2002, 2000); No. 6 (2001) All-Time MWC Championship Record: 0-7 All-Time MWC Championship Record Versus: BYU (0-1); New Mexico (0-4); Colorado St. (0-1); Utah (0-1) All-Time Conference Tournament Record: Davis, Demus Garner All-MWC Honors San Diego State freshman guard Quenese Davis has been named to the Mountain West all-conference third team, the league office announced Monday evening. Davis led the MWC in assists per game both overall (5.33) and in league-only (5.25) outings, while also ranking fourth in steals (1.96/g) and 15th in free-throw percentage. She averaged a team-best 9.7 points per game in conference contests and has scored in double-figures a team-high 16 team times. Nine of her 10-plus point games came against MWC foes, including in each of SDSU s five MWC wins. Her 144 assists are the most by an Aztec since Davis is one of two true Aztec freshmen to ever be named to one of the MWC s three teams, joining Michelle Elliott, who garnered third-team honors in Junior Shanna Demus also garnered honorable mention honors for the first time in her career. The team s top defensive player, Demus ranks third in the league in steals per game (2.19) with a team and career-best 59. The junior notched her first two career 20-point games, leading the Aztecs to wins over Pepperdine and Air Force, and is third on the team in scoring (8.8 ppg.) and second in assists (59). The Story Behind The Seeding Four of the nine seeds were determined on the final day of games last Saturday. Air Force and Colorado State had already claimed the No. 9 and No. 8 slots, while UNLV had secured the No. 6 spot, despite sweeping each of last two games. BYU had the No. 1 seed locked up with New Mexico s loss at UNLV Thursday. SDSU already knew its seed (No. 7) entering the afternoon, but did not know who it would face in the quarterfinals, because of a possible three-way tie for second place. The three teams ending up tied for second were New Mexico, TCU and Wyoming, which all finished The Cowgirls garnered the No. 2 slot because of their combined 3-1 record over the Lady Frogs and Lobos. UNM won the nod over TCU because of its 1-1 mark this season versus Wyoming. This Is Familiar For the fifth time in the Mountain West Conference s eight year history, San Diego State is the No. 7 seed Page Aztec Women s Basketball

Back In Vegas After a three-year stint at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colo., the Mountain West Conference championships returns to Las Vegas and the Thomas & Mack Center on the campus of UNLV in The league tournament spent its first four years of existence at the Thomas & Mack Center from , before moving to the event s first true neutral court from SDSU Travel/Media Information SDSU travels to Las Vegas early Tuesday morning, departing campus at 8 a.m. and getting to Las Vegas just before 11:30 a.m. Upon arrival, the Aztecs will hold a practice at Bishop Gorman High School, the alma mater of freshman forward Lauren Hoisington. SDSU will then have an early shootaround on Wednesday morning at the Thomas & Mack Center. All practices/shootarounds are closed to the media. SDSU head coach Beth Burns will be available for interviews on the MWC teleconference at approximately 11:30 a.m. PT on Monday, followed a half hour later at a press conference at Cox Arena at noon. Players are available after practice on Monday. Contact the SDSU media relations for more information. San Diego State Tournament Tidbits In its history, San Diego State has played in a total of 19 postseason conference tournaments in four different leagues - Pacific Coast Athletic, Big West, Western Athletic, Mountain West. The Aztecs have played a total of 31 games in those conference tournaments and own a (.451) record. San Diego State has captured two conference championships, winning both the 1995 and '97 WAC Tournaments. SDSU has won at least two games on three other occasions. The Aztecs are 9-11 all-time in first round games. The Aztecs last postseason victory came in the 1997 Western Athletic Conference title game. The Aztecs are 6-10 all-time in conference tournament games against current Mountain West Conference members, including a 1-0 mark against Wyoming. This year s Mountain West Conference tournament is the second for Aztec head coach Beth Burns. Burns, however, has coached SDSU in eight previous league championships in two different conferences, the Big West and the WAC. Under Burns, the Aztecs are 11-7 in conference tournaments, winning two times and falling in the first round twice. At Stake For State The Aztecs will be looking for their first Mountain West Conference Tournament victory. SDSU has lost in the first round of each of the first seven MWC championships and hasn t won a postseason contest since San Diego State did not qualify for either the 1998 nor 1999 Western Athletic Conference Tournaments. Only two Aztecs have played in more than one MWC tournament game and in fact, only five total Aztecs have previous MWC championship experience. Senior Erin Jackson (Spark, Nev.), who missed one year due to injury, and junior Kate Eveland (Southlake, Texas) have the most experience, each playing in two games apiece. The Aztecs will be playing their first neutral-site game of the year... San Diego State is 3-9 in neutrallocation games over the past eight seasons... The Aztecs were winless in MWC play last season and had five Page 7 victories this year. The five-game turnaround is the biggest in back-to-back seasons with the previous high being four by Utah (2002 to 2003) and by Brigham Young on two occasions ( , ). SDSU lived up to its preseason prediction, as the Aztecs were picked to finish seventh in the coaches poll released at the conference media day in late October. What s Up With Those Wins - SDSU s 12 wins are its most since SDSU has quadrupled its win total from last season when it was The nine-game turnaround is the program s biggest improvement in back-to-back campaigns since the team won 24 after claiming 10 the season before. - SDSU s 11 victories at home is its most since the team also won The five conference home victories are its most since , when the Aztecs were members of the WAC... SDSU notched back-toback home MWC wins for the first time since 2001, and have claimed three-straight for the first time since The Aztecs five league wins are the program s most since SDSU won two straight MWC games (home or away) for the first time since 2003, with victories over Utah and UNLV. - The is the second time that Beth Burns-led squads have at least doubled their win totals from her first to her second seasons at San Diego State. In her first stint on The Mesa ( ), Burns first squad in won seven games, while her second doubled that with 14 victories in SDSU s six-game win streak was its longest since the squad also won six in a row... The Aztecs seven non-conference victories are the program s most since the team claimed eight. No Go To The Free Throw In 27 games this season, SDSU has gone to the free-throw line more times than its opponent on just seven occasions, going a perfect 7-0 in those outings. The Aztecs have attempted fewer free throws 13 times in 16 conference outings, as MWC opponents own a advantage in that category. In overall games, SDSU opponents have a edge in attempts. SDSU opponents have attempted 20 or more free throws in all but eight games overall this season, including a season-high 40 by Saint Mary s and 37 by New Mexico in the regular season finale. Home vs. Away; First Half vs. Second Half; Up By Five Besides the win-loss column, there are major differences in the stats between the Aztecs games at home and on the road. SDSU scores almost 12 more points per outing (61.4 to 49.6) and shoots almost six percentage points higher at home. The rebounding margin is also dramatic, where the Aztecs are -3.3 at Cox Arena and -8.1 in opponent s gyms. Another interest of note is SDSU s performance in the first half versus the second half in league games. The Aztecs have led seven times at the half in 16 MWC contests, but have gone on to lose four of them at Utah, UNLV, Air Force and BYU. SDSU has been outscored by just 22 points in the first half ( ), but trails by 118 in the second half ( ). Despite only claiming five MWC victories, San Diego State actually had a lead in all 16 outings, including an advantage of five or more points in 12 games. Aztec Blockade For the 14th time this season, the Aztecs logged five or more blocked shots in a single outing with six in the regular season finale with New Mexico on Saturday. San Diego State leads the league in blocks per game with a 4.56 average, and ranked 45th in the nation entering last week. Overall, 11 different Aztecs have combined for the team s 123 rejections, the program s most since Seventy-two of those blocks came in conference play, which ranks second in league season history, trailing only Utah s squad that had 74 rejections. SDSU had a season-high 10 rejections against Cal Poly, its most in a single game since also tallying 10 on Dec. 22, 2002 against Creighton. Individually, three Aztecs have recorded three or more blocks in a single game on nine occasions this season. Two players, Desiree Johnson and Jennifer Layton (Sacramento, Calif.), have had four rejections in a single outing once each. Davis Delivers San Diego State freshman Quenese Davis has finally made her way into the school s top 10 for assists in a season. Davis had 17 helpers in the team s last four games, giving her 144 in The 144 assists are 10th all-time, trailing Penny Toler by seven for the ninth-place slot. Davis is the first Aztec since Jamey Cox in to record 100 or more assists in a season and her 144 assists are the most since Shannon Lee had 166 in If the season were to end today, Davis 5.33 assists per game would also be the program s best since Lee averaged 5.9 in The freshman has led the team in assists in all but two of the 27 games. She ranked 20th nationally in assists per Page Aztec Women s Basketball

SDSU has actually reached that mark in five of its last seven home games. The lone exceptions came against New Mexico, where the host still owned the edge in field-goal percentage, and versus BYU, when the team shot 27.4 percent, despite losing by just five points. For the year, San Diego State has made 40 percent or more of its field goals 11 times, including six occasions in league action, leading to an 8-3 record. Thorn hit four of seven three-pointers in a game that saw the Cougars (21-7, 11-4) hit 50 percent of the 22 three-pointers they attempted. Lisa Osguthorpe, Jennifer Leitner and Stacy Jensen added 11 points apiece for BYU, which moved on to a semifinal game against Colorado State. Atim Otii scored a game- and season-high 21 points and graduating senior Sophia Sledge went out in style, adding a season-best 17 for San Diego State. Three players finished in double figures for New Mexico, paced by Miranda Sanchez's 15 points. The Aztecs used a stingy defensive effort to take a lead at intermission after forcing 14 Lobo turnovers and holding New Mexico to just 8-for-23 shooting from the field in the first half. New Mexico, which got 12 points each from Jordan Adams and Molly McKinnon, broke out of its offensive woes coming out of the break, however, opening the period with a 10-0 run and holding SDSU without a point for the first 6:13 of the period. San Diego State (10-18, 2-12 MWC), the tournament's No. 7 seed, led for much of the first half and was down by just at intermission. Tanisha Knight connected on consecutive back-to-back possessions and Claire Swinbank hit three straight free throws and a field goal to spark a 9-0 Aztec run that closed the Lobo's edge to just with three minutes left.
