Colgate earned its spot in the Semifinals with a dominant win over Lafayette in Thursday s quarterfinal round. The Crusaders upset No. 3 Navy to advance. Colgate swept the regular-season series between the Raiders and Crusaders. Colgate earned a win in Worcester, Mass. on Dec. 29 before taking down Holy Cross on Senior Day at Cotterell Court on Feb. 24. IF COLGATE BEATS HOLY CROSS The Raiders would advance to Wednesday s Patriot League Championship game for the first time since the season and the fourth time in program history. The Raiders would set a program record with 19 wins in a season. Colgate would move to 13-3 at home, tying the program record for home wins in a season that was set by the team. HOLY CROSS Langel Named Coach of the Year, Four Raiders Honored With All-League Laurels Head Coach Matt Langel was voted by his peers as the 2018 Patriot League Coach of the Year, while four Raiders collected All-Patriot League honors, the league announced Monday afternoon. Sophomore Will Rayman earned second team All-League honors, seniors Sean O Brien and Jordan Swopshire garnered third team accolades, while first-year Jordan Burns was named to the Patriot League All-Rookie team. Langel guided a Colgate team that was picked to finish fifth in the Patriot League to a second-place finish and No. 2 seed in the upcoming Patriot League Tournament. The second-place result is Colgate s best since the squad also finished second, and tied for the highest finish since the team won the regular-season title. The Raiders tied all-time program records with 17 regular-season (17-12) wins and 12 Patriot League (12-6) wins as Colgate wrapped up home court advantage through the semifinal round. The Raiders are one win away from tying the program record for wins in a season (18). Colgate finished the regular season 11-3 at Cotterell Court under Langel s guidance, tying a Cotterell Court record for wins in a season. It marks the most home wins in 23 years. The team already has secured the program s first overall winning record in 10 years. Colgate cannot fall down to the.500 mark, and the worst the Raiders can finish is The last Colgate team to finish above.500 overall was the squad that went Langel has led the Raiders to a mark against Patriot League competition over the last four years. Langel becomes just the second Colgate coach to earn men s basketball Patriot League Coach of the Year honors and the first since Jack Bruen collected Coach of the Year nods in both 1992 and Rayman wrapped up his stellar sophomore campaign with team-best marks of 14.3 points and 6.4 rebounds per game to earn second team All-Patriot League honors. The New York City native s scoring average was good for 10th among all players in the Patriot League. The sophomore also led the Raiders with 13.3 points and 6.4 rebounds per Patriot League contest. O Brien collects the first All-Patriot League honor of his career after finishing the regular season with 11.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game. His assist-to-turnover ratio of 3.63 leads the Patriot League and ranks fourth in all of Division I. He scored the 1,000th point of his career Saturday on Senior Day in Colgate s win over Holy Cross. The Lafayette Hill, Pa., native ranks in the top 10 of a number of Colgate career records, including three-point shooting percentage, three-pointers made and career assists. Burns was named to the Patriot League All-Rookie Team after his standout freshman campaign in which he averaged 11.8 points and 3.2 assists per game. The San Antonio, Texas, native collected three Patriot League Rookie of the Week awards (Jan. 29, Jan. 22, Nov. 20) during the season and his 11.8 points per game ranks third among league freshmen. The second-place result is Colgate s best since the squad also finished second, and tied for the highest finish since the team won the regular-season title. The Raiders tied all-time program records with 17 regular-season (17-12) wins and 12 Patriot League (12-6) victories, and Colgate has already clinched its first overall winning season in 10 years. The Raiders used a dominant team effort to take down seventh-seeded Lafayette Thursday in the Patriot League Quarterfinals. Senior Sean O Brien led the Raiders with a game-high 18 points. Sophomore Will Rayman recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 16 points and 12 rebounds. First-year Jordan Burns added 12 points, while junior Dana Batt chipped in 11 in the strong team effort. PLAYOFF PUSH Colgate will be looking to advance to the Patriot League Championship game for the first time in 10 years and the fourth time in program history. The Raiders are on the hunt for their third Patriot League Championship and first since Colgate is 2-2 all-time when playing Holy Cross in the Patriot League Tournament, and 1-0 when playing the Crusaders in Hamilton. It marks the most home victories in 91 years and sets a new Cotterell Court record. The program record for home wins is 13 ( ). Colgate s only three home losses came against Lafayette ( Jan. 5), first-place Bucknell ( Jan. 15) and Lehigh ( Feb. 14). Colgate is averaging 77.0 points per home contest compared to its mark of 70.3 points per away game. The Raiders are shooting 46.1 percent from the floor and 77.8 percent from the free throw line on their home baskets. If Colgate wins its Patriot League Semifinal game Sunday, the Raiders would tie the program record with 13 home wins in a season. AGAINST THE CRUSADERS Colgate claimed a pair of close wins over Holy Cross when the two teams met in the Patriot League opener on Dec. 29 and the regular-season finale on Feb. 24. The Raiders earned their first road win of the season with a victory at Holy Cross on Dec. 29. Colgate used a run during a nine-minute second half stretch to turn a four-point deficit into a 10-point lead. The Raiders then held off a late Holy Cross charge to secure Colgate s first win in Worcester since the season. The Raiders erased a 12-point second-half deficit to come back for a win over Holy Cross on Feb. 24 in the regular-season finale. Colgate scored a season-low 12 first-half points, but rallied to out-score the Crusaders in the second term. Senior Jordan Swopshire led the Raiders in the two games combined with 17.0 points and 5.0 rebounds. First-year Jordan Burns (11.5 ppg), sophomore Will Rayman (11.0 ppg) and senior Sean O Brien (11.0 ppg) were also key contributors in the regular-season series against the Crusaders. The Raiders are 15-4 when scoring 70 or more points and 3-8 when falling under the 70-point mark. Colgate s three wins when falling under the 70-point mark came against Navy ( Feb. 4), Loyola (68-47) and Holy Cross (59-53). Colgate is also 8-10 when allowing 70-plus points and 10-2 when holding their opponents to 69 or fewer. THE THREE IS KEY The Raiders are averaging 9.5 three-point field goals made per game, a mark that ranks 38th in all of Division I. Colgate swished a season-high 16 treys in a win over Columbia on Nov. 25. The mark against the Lions fell one shy of the program record against a Division I opponent. The Raiders have shot40.0 percent (175-for-437) from beyond the arc in their 18 wins, compared to a 32.4 percent (111-for-343) clip in Colgate s 12 losses. THE BIG 1,000 Seniors Jordan Swopshire and Sean O Brien recently became the newest members of Colgate s 1,000-point club. O Brien scored the 1,000th point of his career on Senior Day against Holy Cross (Feb. 24). Swopshire scored his 1,000th career point on Feb. 14 against Lehigh. He transferred to Colgate after playing his freshman year at Bradley where he scored 34 points. The O Fallon, Mo. native scored his 1,000th point in a Colgate uniform on Feb. 24 against Holy Cross. The two seniors become the 32nd and 33rd members of Colgate s 1,000-point club. NON-LEAGUE WRAP UP Colgate wrapped up non-league play with a 5-6 record, the team s best non-league mark since the team headed into Patriot League play at 6-5. Colgate ended non-league action on a two-game winning streak after victories over NJIT (87-76) and Pitt-Bradford (103-52). The 51-point win over Pitt-Bradford marked Colgate s largest margin of victory since the season, while the Raiders 103 points were the most in a single game in 20 years. Colgate finished non-league action 5-0 at home and 0-6 on the road. HOLY CROSS MATT LANGEL 2018 Patriot League Coach of the Year, Seventh Matt Langel continues to create a Colgate Basketball program that is competing for Patriot League championships. Since arriving in Hamilton in 2011, Langel has mentored and developed a Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year, Patriot League Rookie of the Year, six All-Patriot League picks and two Patriot League All-Rookie members. Langel has aided in the development of seven professional basketball players in Mike Venezia 12, Mitch Rolls 13, Murphy Burnatowski 14, Damon Sherman-Newsome 15, Ethan Jacobs 15, Alex Ramon 16 and Austin Tillotson 16. The Raiders are against Patriot League competition over the last three seasons. Colgate is primed for a strong campaign as the Raiders return 93 percent of their scoring production and 90 percent of minutes played from the season. Colgate rewarded Langel with a five-year contract extension in March 2015, less than two weeks after the Raiders turned out their highest finish in the Patriot League standings since the 1996 team finished first. Colgate finished ASSISTANT COACHING/OPERATIONS STAFF second in the Patriot League standings and advanced to the tournament semifinals. With the extension, Langel is now under contract at Colgate through the season. It was Colgate s first Patriot League semifinal appearance since With the new 18-game Patriot League schedule, the Raiders claimed a program-record 12 Patriot League wins during the campaign. Langel was named the 20th head coach in the 114-year history of Colgate basketball on April 25, Langel came to Colgate after spending five seasons as an assistant coach at Temple University ( ).
