The winning streak reached six games Thursday night as San Diego State opened Mountain West Conference action with a victory over Brigham Young. The victory snapped a six-game losing streak versus the Cougars, who defeated the by an average of 30 points in their three meetings with SDSU a year ago. The win was also the first for the in a conference opener in four years and improved SDSU to 5-1 this season at home. At 9-6 overall, San Diego State is off to its best start since opening the season at SDSU s six-game winning streak was its longest since the closed out the campaign with 11 wins before falling to Oregon in the NCAA Tournament. About Air Force Air Force enters the week at 3-11 (0-1 MWC) after falling to New Mexico, 68-44, at home in its Mountain West Conference opener Saturday. Prior to the loss to UNM, the Falcons snapped an eight-game losing streak with an win over Cal Poly, Jan. 7. The Falcons are just 1-49 in their previous 50 conference games and are in the midst of an 11-game league losing streak. Air Force s last conference victory came last January when the Falcons defeated San Diego State, 77-72, in Colorado Springs. Most of Air Force s difficulties have come on the offensive end this season. The Falcons are averaging a conference-low 54.1 ppg and have twice been held to 10 or fewer points in a half this season. Two players that aren t struggling this season are forward Rozalyn Russ and guard Morgan Bennett. Russ leads the Falcons in both scoring (11.3 ppg) and rebounding (6.6 rpg). Bennett is also scoring in double figures (10.0 ppg). The duo is accounting for nearly 40 percent of the Falcons offensive production. Of the 13 players on Air Force s roster, seven are new to the team this season. Head coach Sue Darling is in her third season at the Academy and owns a (.174) record with the Falcons. She was named head coach a Air Force in 1998 and inherited the difficult task of leading a program that had just recently moved from Division II to Division I. San Diego State-Air Force Series Shorts Thursday's game between SDSU and Air Force will be just the seventh all-time between the two schools. The lead the series 5-1 but suffered their first-ever defeat to the Falcons, 77-72, in the last meeting between the two squads in Colorado Springs. SDSU rebounded to defeat Air Force, 70-38, in the return engagement in Cox Arena. The 32-point margin of victory equaled their largest win over the Falcons. San Diego State is 2-1 all-time versus the Academy in Colorado Springs. The last win at Air Force came during the season. Recapping Last Year s Meetings San Diego State struggled to shoot the ball consistently and watched the Falcons get red hot from the floor in a loss to Air Force in last year s first meeting in Colorado Springs. The Falcons shot 49 percent (23-for-47) from the floor and a season-best 81.5 percent (22-for-27) from the stripe and led th by as may as 14 points in the second half before SDSU went on a 16-3 run, twice cutting the Falcons' lead to a single point in the last three minutes. Air Force, however, hit 6-of-8 from the foul line in the last two minutes to preserve the win. San Diego State led wire-to-wire in the rematch at Cox Arena, cruising to a victory. All nine who dressed for the game contributed at least two points to the win, including Jamey Cox, who led all scorers with 18 points. Common Enemies San Diego State and Air Force have faced three common non-conference opponents Cal State Fullerton, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Cal Poly. SDSU posted a perfect 3-0 record versus the trio, facing 2-of-3 on the road and winning by an average of 18.3 ppg. The Falcons won at Cal State Fullerton (W, 86-59), and split with TAMU-CC (L, 68-42) and Cal Poly (W, 86-68) for a 3.0 ppg margin of victory in the three contests.

3 Noting SDSU s Versus Utah San Diego State s loss to Utah was the first since falling at San Jose State on Dec. 6. The loss snapped a six-game SDSU winning streak and a perfect four-game run in Cox Arena. Both streaks were the longest for the under head coach Barb Smith. The loss was also SDSU s first in its last five games to be decided by 10 points or less. San Diego State, which led at the break, lost for the first time this season when leading at the half. SDSU was a perfect 6-0 when ahead at intermission. With a advantage on the boards, the outrebounded an opponent for just the sixth time in 15 games. SDSU is now 3-3 when collecting more rebounds than its opponent. San Diego State s 47 points were a season low. The also lost for just the second time this year when holding an opponent to fewer than 65 points. Utah s 46 field goal attempts and 13 fouls were both season-lows for an Aztec opponent. The Utes more than made up the difference at the line, however, connecting on 20- of-24 attempts for an opponent season-high 83.3 percent. Sophomore Jamey Cox posted her ninth double-figure scoring game of the year and the 30th of her 42-game career, finishing with 10 points. Junior Claire Swinbank scored in double figures for the sixth time this season, finishing with 10 points. She also collected a career-high seven rebounds. Win Total Already Equal To That Of Last Season With nine wins so far this season, San Diego State has already equaled its victory total for all of when the finished the year 9-19 (4-10 MWC). A win Thursday at Air Force would improve San Diego State to 10-6 (2-1 MWC) and equal the highest single-season win total of the Barb Smith era. SDSU finished Smith s inaugural season season at Road Warrior Tradition Returning To Montezuma Mesa San Diego State won its fourth game away from campus Jan. 7, defeating Texas A&M- Corpus Christi, The victory moved SDSU to 4-4 on the road this year, including a win over Alcorn State at the Unilever Lady Tiger Classic. Through 15 games, the have already posted as many wins away from Cox Arena this season (four) as they had in each of the last two years combined. It is also the first time San Diego State has won four Did You Know? San Diego State boasts one of the nation s most improved RPI rankings. Coming off a split with BYU and Utah at home last week, the enter Thursday s game with an RPI ranking of 129 a jump of 100 spots over last season. SDSU closed out the campaign as the nation s 229thranked team, according to Collegerpi.com. An Aztec Win Thursday Would... Improve San Diego State to 10-6 (2-1 MWC) on the season, 5-4 away from Cox Arena and 7-1 overall in its last eight games. Give the 10 wins on the year, equalling the most victories in a season under Barb Smith. SDSU went during Smith inaugural campaign. Put SDSU four games over.500 for the second time this season. Give SDSU three straight wins on the road. Be the second consecutive conference road win for the. SDSU closed out the season with a victory at Colorado State. Improve SDSU to 6-1 all-time versus Air Force, 3-1 in Colorado Springs. pre-conference games away from campus since the season when the went 4-2. San Diego State has not won five or more games away from campus since winning 12 during the season. Home Cookin Not So Bad Though In addition to its improvement on the road, San Diego State has also performed better at home this season, posting a 5-2 mark in Cox Arena, including a split in its first Mountain West Conference homestand of the year. Last year, the were 7-7 at home, including a 3-4 mark in league games. Head Coach Barb Smith Armed with a new contract, SDSU head coach Barb Smith is in her fourth season on Montezuma Mesa and owns a career record of (.372). Prior to taking over as SDSU's fifth head coach in 1997, Smith spent nine years as the top assistant at Colorado. During her tenure at CU, the Buffaloes won an average of 24 games per season, five Big 8 Conference championships and made eight NCAA Tournament appearances. She is a 1986 graduate of Ohio State, where she was a fouryear starter at point guard and led the Buckeyes to three NCAA berths. After wining just 5-of-15 games decided by 10 points or less last season, SDSU appears to be learning how to win the close ones this year. Despite their nine-point loss to Utah, the are 5-4 in games decided by 10 or fewer points on the year and have won five of the last seven. Among those five wins are three road victories (Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Portland State and Cal Poly). Post Six- Non-Conference Turnaround San Diego State s 8-5 non-conference record is a dramatic improvement from a year ago when the were just 5-8 in their first 13 games. The victory at Texas A&M- Corpus Christi completed a six-game turnaround over last year s non-conference finish, despite playing eight on the road. Last year, SDSU played eight of its 13 pre-conference games in Cox Arena. Defense Leading Way To Improved Record Its not so difficult to figure out why San Diego State has won six of its last seven games and eight of its last 11. DEFENSE! The have held nine of their 15 opponents under 60 points this season, including eight of the last 11. During SDSU s last seven gams, opponents are shooting just 35.7 percent (115-of-323) from the floor, including a paltry 22.3 percent (20-of-89) from three-point distance. The are 9-2 on the year when holding an opponent under 65 points. Heating Up, Staying Hot... San Diego State shot a combined 45.3 percent from the field in last four games, including 41.3 percent versus one of the nation s stingiest defenses, Utah (34.1 percent FG % defense), and enters Thursday s match up at Air Force shooting.441 for the season, third in the Mountain West Conference and up significantly over last season with the connected on just 40.4 percent of their shots. SDSU has shot better than 50 percent in eight halves and over 45 percent in 7-of-15 games, including shooting over 60 percent in both halves versus Illinois State, to finish at 68 percent (32-of-47). That performance broke a 13-year-old school record, eclipsing the old mark of 65 percent (34-of-50) set on Jan. 19, 1987, versus Hawaii. 5 ...And That Translates Into More Points SDSU is also scoring 6.5 more points per game than it did a year ago and has already surpassed the 80-point plateau twice. Last season, the never scored more than 80 points. More on SDSU s Defense The have held eight of their last 10 opponents to 37-percent shooting or less, including Utah last Saturday and Cal Poly, which became the third SDSU foe this season to shoot less than 30 percent from the field. Earlier this year, the held both Alcorn State and Cal State Fullerton below 30 percent from the floor. Hard To Get The Three Through 15 games, San Diego State has proven itself to be the toughest team in the Mountain West Conference to sink a three-pointer against. Heading into Thursday s game at Air Force, Aztec opponents are shooting just 28.8 percent from beyond the arc and, in the last seven games, and have connected on only 20 of their last 100 attempts (20.0 percent). SDSU has held three opponents San Jose State, Cal State Fullerton and California without a three-point basket. Five-Finger Discounts One of San Diego State s most amazing turnarounds this season has been in the steals category. Through 15 games, the rank second in the Mountain West Conference in steals per game at SDSU picked off 10 against Cal and a season-high 18 versus Cal State Fullerton its most since snatching 22 against Fresno State on Feb. 24, 1999 and now has notched double-digit steals in six games on the year. Last season, SDSU averaged just 8.5 spg, good for seventh in the eight-team league, and finished with double-figures in steals in only 10-of-28 games. A pair of rank among the Mountain West s leaders in steals per game: Tanisha Knight (6th), Shannon Lee (11th) and Jamey Cox (14th). Turnovers Still The Key After struggling in the turnover department much of last season, SDSU has cut its turnovers in excess of three per game in and have had fewer turnovers than their opponents in 8-of-15 contests. The averaged 22.5 turnovers per game last year and enter Thursday s game averaging The have already posted seven games with 18 or fewer turnovers, including a season-low 12 at Portland State SDSU s fewest turnovers since committing just eight versus Pepperdine on Dec. 7, However, the key stat remains which team has the fewest miscues. SDSU is 7-1 when it has less turnovers than its opponent and just 2-4 with more miscues. Cox Eclipses 500 Sophomore Jamey Cox surpassed the 500-point plateau last week with her 11-point effort versus Brigham Young. It was the 41st game of her Aztec career. She is on pace to become SDSU s first 1,000-point scorer since Jodi Nowlin-Tres in 1997 and could reach the mark as early as the end of next season. Getting That Scoring Touch Back Sophomore Jamey Cox appears to have regained her scoring touch. After averaging just 3.5 ppg during a four-game stretch from Nov. 25 through Dec. 6, Cox has finished in double figures in six of the last seven games, thrice leading SDSU in scoring and averaging 11.3 ppg. Last season, Cox averaged 13.7 ppg en route to all-newcomer team honors. She continued that streak to open , averaging 13.8 ppg in SDSU s first four games this season before going into a four-game funk. She s Baaack! After missing all of last season with a torn left ACL and the first 11 games of the current campaign with a severely broken left thumb (39 games in all), senior Sophia Sledge finally returned to the lineup last week. After getting her feet wet at Cal Poly (0 points in four minutes of work), Sledge showed why she was SDSU s leading scorer during the season, connecting on 6-of-10 from the field, including a pair of treys, to finish with a co-team-high 14 points. The senior added nine points against BYU and another three-pointer against Utah. Since her return, Sledge has connected on 47.6 percent of her shots and is averaging 6.5 ppg in 14.5 minutes of work. She also collected a career-high seven rebounds against Utah. Swinbank has now scored in double figures in 6-of-15 contests and ranks third on the team in scoring at 8.2 ppg. Good Knight! Just how big has junior Tanisha Knight been for the since arriving from Central Arizona College? Knight, who has scored in double figures in 11-of-15 games, leads San Diego State in both scoring (11.5) and rebounding (5.7). In fact, Knight ranks in the MWC s top 10 in four separate categories: Scoring (9th), Steals (6th), Blocks (3rd) and Rebounding (10th). Otii Gets Back On Track At Corpus Christi, Brigham Young After not scoring in double figures for eight games, junior Atim Otii found her game in the most unlikely places Texas Gulf Coast. Otii, who last finished in double-digits at Portland State with 14 points, scored 11 at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi for her fourth double-figure scoring game of the season. She did herself one better versus BYU, throwing down a season-high 18 points on 7-for-9 shooting. Otii also grabbed eight boards versus the Islanders and seven more against the Cougars the most since hauling down 11 at San Jose State. Accepting Her New Role After getting off to a slow start in , senior Anita Bundage has come on strong in the last six games. Since the Cal State Fullerton game, Bundage has averaged 8.0 points and 6.2 rebounds. She is also shooting a red-hot 57.1 percent (16-of-28) from the field and 75.0 percent (15-of-20) from the stripe. Bundage also recorded her first double-double of the season during that stretch with 13 points and 11 boards versus No. Arizona. Mountain West Conference Stats Individual Category* Avg. Scoring 9.
