It allows him (Coach Leonard Hamilton) to keep a certain amount of energy on the floor, particularly defensively. They ve got quality players that play with a lot of confidence. Defensively they could be as good as any teams that he s had previously. And he obviously stresses that. That s always been a strength of Leonard s teams. Al Skinner Kennesaw State Head Coach SEMINOLES TRAVEL TO FACE RUTGERS IN ACC/BIG TEN CHALLENGE Florida State, which is 5-0 for the fifth time under Head Coach Leonard Hamilton, travels to play at Rutgers in the 19 th Annual Big/Ten Challenge at the Louis Brown Athletic Center in Piscataway, N.J. on Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPNU. Florida State enters Tuesday s game against the Scarlet Knights with wins over George Washington (Nov. 14, 87-67), Fordham, (Nov. 17, 67-43), Colorado State (Nov. 19, 90-73), Kennesaw State (Nov. 22, 98-79) and The Citadel (Nov. 24, ) and will play its first true road game of the season against Rutgers. With its victories over Fordham and Colorado State the Seminoles won the championship of the inaugural Jamaica Classic. The Seminoles are 5-0 for the first time since the start of the season when the Seminoles also won their first five games of the season. Florida State is playing in its 19 th consecutive ACC/Big Ten Challenge against its ninth different opponent with Minnesota (six times) as its most common opponent. The Seminoles defeated the Gophers, 75-67, in Tallahassee in the 2016 challenge. Following Tuesday s game against Rutgers, the Seminoles travel to Gainesville looking for their fourth consecutive win against No. 6 Florida. FLORIDA STATE VS. RUTGERS CONNECTIONS Florida State will play its first true road game at Rutgers at the Louis Brown Athletic Center on November 28, The game between the Seminoles and the Scarlet Knights comes on the second night of the ACC / Big Ten Challenge. Florida State has a 1-0 all-time record against Rutgers with the only game in the series coming as an win on December 22, 1967 in Tallahassee. Rutgers is coached by Steve Pikiell who has never coached against Florida State. As an assistant at Connecticut during the season, he helped the Huskies to a 2-0 record against Leonard Hamilton s third team at Miami. Karl Hobbs, the associate head coach at Rutgers, totaled a 1-2 record against Florida State as the assistant coach/recruiting coordinator at Connecticut from Brandin Knight, who is in his second season as an assistant at Rutgers, helped Pittsburgh to a 3-2 record against Florida State as a member of the Panther Program from Ben Asher, the special assistant to the head coach at Rutgers, spent two seasons (2014 and 2015) as a graduate assistant under Mark Gottfried at NC State. FLORIDA STATE S LEADS BY THE NUMBERS Florida State has won each of its first five games by an average of points per game with each of its wins coming by at least 17 points. The Seminoles have led by at least 17 points in each of their first five games, held a season-high 41-point advantage against The Citadel (103-62, 6:19 second half) and have led each of their five games at half time by at least 12 points. The Seminoles largest first half lead of 19 points came against George Washington, Kennesaw State and The Citadel while its largest second half lead of 41 points came in its victory over The Citadel in Tallahassee. Florida State enters Tuesday s game against Rutgers averaging 91.0 points scored per game the fourth highest scoring average in the ACC. The Seminoles scoring margin is tied for the third highest in the ACC and ranks them as one of five teams in the league with a +21 points per game or higher scoring margin. MANN AND M.J. WALKER NAMED TO ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM AT JAMAICA CLASSIC Junior Terance Mann (17.0 ppg, 7.0 rpg) and freshman M.J. Walker (11.0 ppg, 1.5 spg) were both named to the Jamaica Classic All-Tournament team as the Seminoles took home the championship of the event with victories over Fordham (67-43, Nov. 17) and Colorado State (90-73, Nov. 19, 2017). For Mann and Walker, it marked the first time both players had been named to an all-tournament team during their collegiate careers. SEMINOLES M.J. WALKER NAMED TO JERRY WEST AWARD WATCH LIST Florida State freshman guard M.J. Walker, a consensus top-25 high school player in 2017, is on the 2018 Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year award watch list as named by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Walker is the 12 th McDonald s All-American in Florida State history. He is one of two true freshmen and one of five players from the ACC on the 2018 Jerry West Award watch list. The Seminoles defeated Minnesota, 75-67, on November 28, 2016 in Tallahassee; Defeat Rutgers and improve to 6-0 for the first time since the start of the season when it won its first seven games of the season. 4 Florida State Men s Basketball By The Numbers.231 Florida State held Fordham to a.231 shooting percentage (12 of 52) in its win over the Rams on Nov. 17 in the Jamaica Classic tied for the fifth best field goal defense mark in school history..357 Sophomore CJ Walker has made at least one 3-point field goals in each of the Seminoles last three games. He is five of 14 (.357) from the bonusphere and is averaging 10.7 points per game since scoring 11 points in Florida State s victory over Colorado State in the championship game of the Jamaica Classic. 1 Mfiondu Kabengele totaled 16 points and 12 rebounds in 14 minutes of playing time against The Citadel on Friday night to earn the first double of his career. 1 M.J. The Seminoles 38 3-point shots against the Bulldogs ranks as the second highest total for 3-point shots attempted in a game in school history. Florida State attempted a school record 39 3-point shots in a double overtime win over Wichita State in the first round of the NIT on March 17, PHIL COFER IN THE LAST TWO GAMES Is shooting.800 from the field (16 of 20). He was a near perfect nine of 11 from the field in scoring 21 points in Florida State s win over Kennesaw State (Nov. 22) and was a near perfect seven of nine from the field in scoring 15 points the Seminoles victory over The Citadel (Nov. 24). All the credit goes to them, and their length, and their athleticism but more importantly how Coach Hamilton has them doing exactly what he wants them to do. Dugger Baucom Citadel Basketball Mfiondu (Kabengele) has a knack for raising his level to higher heights than you can expect. He ll go block a shot and you ll wonder where that leap came from. He has a way of motivating himself. He s extremely emotional. The game means an awful lot to him. He almost takes on another person out there when the game starts, and he s a great teammate. He s encouraging; he s verbal during the game, whether he s in the game or out of the game; and he s just now starting to learn how to play. He doesn t have very much fear. In practice every day he plays inside, and he plays outside, so he s savvy enough to be able to go back and forth between positions and be effective. Leonard Hamilton Florida State Basketball He (M.J. Walker) is playing extremely hard and playing with reckless abandonment and that s really nice to see. As he gets more playing time under his belt, he will start to settle into a rhythm and be able to understand the officiating at this level a little more. I m proud of him for selling out on defense and putting a lot of energy into the defensive side of the ball. Leonard Hamilton Florida State Basketball Trent (Forrest) is a very cerebral player due to his good decisions and his good defense. He has really long arms and has a really great feel for the game. He s able to get off the ball quickly, and he s also able to see things before they happen. He s a very important part of our team and I really like having him and CJ (Walker), the double-head point guards; they like each other and play well together. And you will see the two of them playing together more often, depending on how the game is being played. Leonard Hamilton Florida State Basketball We are trying to challenge Phil (Cofer) to be more of himself. He s an athlete who needs to get more rebounds. He has to be more conscious of where he is on the court. Phil has really improved his confidence and his perimeter shot. He wasn t trying to create off the dribble, he was going more straight to the basket, and he played within his abilities, which I m very proud of. He s also constantly providing instructions to our young and inexperienced players, which helps them make less mistakes.
