Brevin Knight, one of the all-time great players in Stanford history, helped lead the Cardinal to three NCAA appearances and an NIT appearance. Knight ended his career as the school s career leader in assists and steals, and #4 in scoring. Important Dates in Stanford Basketball History February 14, 1918 Stanford scored its first victory over California, January 24, 1922 The Old Pavilion, predecessor of Maples Pavilion, was dedicated for basketball with a game against College of Pacific. Stanford won At the time, it was the largest facility exclusively for basketball in the United States. December 30, 1936 Hank Luisetti introduced the onehand shot to the East Coast as Stanford defeated Long Island before a crowd of 17,263 in New York s Madison Square Garden. January 1, 1938 Hank Luisetti scored a school record 50 points against Duquesne in Cleveland, Ohio. Luisetti chalked up 23 field goals in the game, a school record. Both records remain the oldest in Stanford basketball history. March 28, 1942 Stanford defeated Dartmouth to win the NCAA championship. Howie Dallmar scored 15 points to win Most Valuable Player honors while Jack Dana scored 14 points. Stanford Basketball Tradition Championship History NCAA Tournament appearances. 5 NIT berths. All of those accomplishments, along with a rich and storied tradition, place Stanford basketball among the nation s elite programs. Stanford returned to the NCAA Tournament last season, making its first appearance in the Big Dance since the season. The Cardinal finished overall after falling to Louisville in the opening round. At Stanford, it s still done the right way. Talented student-athletes who are wellspoken, polite, respectful of opponents, and who manage to graduate on time. And oh yes, athletes who win. Bill Coats, St. Louis Post-Dispatch In , Stanford was awarded a berth in the NIT for the first time since The Cardinal downed Virginia in the opening round before falling to host Missouri State in the second round. The Cardinal participated in the NCAA Tournament for a school record 11th consecutive season in Stanford finished overall, falling to Mississippi State in the first round. In , the Cardinal recorded its 11th straight winning season and won 26 games in a row to begin the year. Stanford set a school record with 17 conference wins, won the Pac-10 Tournament title and was ranked No. 1 for four weeks. In , Stanford finished 24-9 overall and placed second in the Pac-10 with a 14-4 mark. The Cardinal advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament and posted 20 or more wins for the ninth straight season. Adam Keefe, who was named to five All-America teams during his senior session, is one of only four players in NCAA history to have a combination of 60 percent field goal accuracy, 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. He is the only non seven-footer to accomplish that feat. The other three are Lew Alcindor, David Robinson and Patrick Ewing. Josh Childress, a finalist for the 2004 John Wooden Award, appeared with the coaching legend on the cover of Sports Illustrated On Campus. Included in that batch was a victory over then-no. 1 Arizona to highlight the year. Stanford s squad produced two NBA first round selections, Curtis Borchardt and Casey Jacobsen. The club finished overall that season, reaching the NCAA Tournament second round. Seven years ago in , the Cardinal won a school record 31 games, advanced to the Elite Eight, won the Pac- 10 title for a third straight season and was ranked among the nation s top-3 the entire year. Eight years ago, the Cardinal claimed Pac-10 honors (along with Arizona), and for the first time in school history was ranked No. 1 in the nation. During the campaign, the Cardinal captured the Pac-10 title, attained a No. 2 national ranking during the season, and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The season turned out to be one of the most memorable in program history. The Cardinal reached the NCAA Final Four in San Antonio, falling in overtime to eventual national champion Kentucky in the semifinals. Since 1990, Stanford has chalked up an impressive overall mark of That includes a ledger in games played at Maples Pavilion. Where the Cardinal once played in front of small crowds, it now routinely performs to a large contingent of Cardinal faithful. Every seat at Maples Pavilion has been sold out for years, and it is anticipated that all home games will again be sold out in Stanford basketball has enjoyed many memorable moments in its history, coming in the form of signature victories or outstanding individual accomplishments. March 2, 1964 Tom Dose sets a Stanford Pavilion (now Burnham Pavilion) record with 42 points against Washington State. January 3, 1969 BYU defeats Stanford in the first game ever played at Maples Pavilion. January 4, 1969 Stanford defeats BYU for the team s first win at Maples Pavilion. March 1, 1969 USC defeats Stanford in the dedication game of Maples Pavilion. December 22, 1973 Rich Kelley grabs a school record 27 rebounds at Kentucky. February 4, 1988 Stanford defeats No. 1 ranked Arizona 82-74, the first time in school history that the Cardinal had beaten a No. 1 ranked squad. February 18, 1990 Stanford defeats UCLA 70-69, the first victory ever for the Cardinal at Pauley Pavilion. March 27, 1991 Stanford defeats Oklahoma to win the NIT title. 6 Stanford in the Postseason Stanford Postseason Highlights Stanford captured the NCAA title behind All-Americans Jim Pollard and Howie Dallmar Stanford returns to the postseason for the first time since its NCAA title year in 1942, getting past Long Beach State in the first round of the NIT before dropping a heartbreaker to Arkansas State, Stanford advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 47 years, but is upset in the first round by Siena. The regular lineup for Stanford s 1942 NCAA championship team was (l to r) Bill Cowden, Howie Dallmar, Ed Voss, Jim Pollard, Don Burness and head coach Everett Dean. Stanford defeated Rice Institute, 53-47, and then handed Colorado a defeat to reach the final. Stanford won 53-38, as Dallmar scored 15 points and Jack Dana came off the bench to add 14. Pollard was ill and did not play in the championship game. The game wasn t even broadcast live back to the Bay Area, but, instead, was recreated from wire reports by KSFO. The gate gross for the five nights of basketball in Kansas City was $23,500. Expenses, mostly for travel, were about $22,000. Of the remaining $1,500, half went to the NCAA. The other $750 was split eight ways among the eastern and western tourney teams. Stanford shot 61-percent from the floor, and outrebounded the 49ers Todd Lichti continued his All-America season with a season-high 34 points. Lichti hit 12 of 13 shots for 92-percent and added eight free throws in 10 attempts. Greg Butler added 16 points and six rebounds, while Howard Wright chipped in with 11 points and nine rebounds. Bryan McSweeney dished out eight assists. However, Stanford s season ended as visiting Arkansas State scored a victory. Once again, Lichti led Stanford with 23 points, hitting 8-of-12 shots from the floor. Terry Taylor scored 10 points and dished out nine assists, while Butler grabbed a team-high nine rebounds The Stanford basketball team is regarded as one of the best teams in modern Cardinal history. The team ranked 12th in the nation, finished the season 26-7, made the NCAA Tournament, and set or tied 27 Stanford, Maples Pavilion, team, individual and Pac-10 records. Three members of that team (Adam Keefe, Todd Lichti and Howard Wright) later played in the NBA, and a fourth player, Andrew Vlahov, played in the 1988, 92, 96 and 2000 Olympic Games for Australia. NCAA Tournament, 26-7 Overall, 15-3 Pac-10 Siena 80, Stanford 78, East Regional, March 16, 1989, Greensboro, NC Upsets prevail in the NCAA Tournament, and Siena College pulled off the upset in the first round with a victory over Stanford in the East Regional in Greensboro, North Carolina. Stanford had been seeded third in the regional and Siena 14th. Freshman Adam Keefe came off the bench to score 22 points, including 12-of-13 from the free throw line. 7 Stanford in the Postseason The Cardinal squad finished the season with an appearance in the NIT. NIT Tournament, overall, 9-9 Pac-10 Hawaii 69, Stanford 57, First Round, March 15, 1990, Honolulu, HI The Cardinal traveled to Honolulu to face a tough Hawai i team from the WAC. The heat and humidity slowly tired the Cardinal and Hawai i eventually walked away with a victory. Adam Keefe scored a season-high 31 points, hitting 10-of-13 shots from the floor for 77-percent. Keefe added 10 rebounds in 39 minutes of play The Stanford basketball team captured the NIT championship, only one of 14 schools in intercollegiate history to win both the NCAA and NIT titles. The team shot-60 percent from the floor and outrebounded the Cougars Kenny Ammann hit for a gamehigh 29 points, including five three-pointers. Adam Keefe added 22 points and five rebounds, while Deshon Wingate connected for 12 points and 12 rebounds. The Cardinal then hit the road for a game at Wisconsin.
