FILLING IT UP Averaging 82.1 points per game, the Spartans are the second leading scoring team in the Mountain West Conference and rank 21st in the nation. Just three years ago, the team was averaging less than 48 points, that s an increase of more than 35 points per game. San José State has four players among the top-18 scorers in the league, the most of any team. Ta Rea Cunnigan (Jr., G, Winchester, Calif.) ranks 2nd at 18.3/g. Rebecca Woodberry (Jr., G, Phoenix, Ariz.) is 7th (14.2/g), Classye James (Jr., G, East Palo Alto, Calif.) is 9th (13.7/g) and Jasmine Smith (Fr., F, Burbank, Calif.) ranks 18th (11.9/g). CRASHING THE BOARDS Riana Byrd (So., C, Richmond, Calif.), Jasmine Smith (Fr., F, Burbank, Calif.) at 8.5 rebounds and Rebecca Woodberry (Jr., G, Phoenix, Ariz.) at 7.2 rebounds are a one-three-five punch when it comes to rebounding in the Mountain West. Byrd leads the MW (9.8/g) and ranks 49th in the nation. The three have combined for 16 double-digit rebounding efforts led by Byrd s seven, also tops in the conference. CLIMBING THE CAREER LIST(S) After little more than two seasons, Ta Rea Cunnigan (Jr., G, Winchester, Calif.) is already in the top-10 of four San José State career categories. Her 1,184 points put her in 10th place. She is five points from moving ahead Rhoda Chew ( , 1,188 pts.) for ninth. Both her 357 free throws and 481 free throw attempts rank second on the program s career list. She trails only Cricket Williams ( ) in both categories. Cunnigan is 109 made free throws and 251 free throw attempts from tying Williams in each category. She ranks 5th in career free throw percentage (.742) and 8th in career steals (171). Cunnigan ranks 10th in 3-point attempts (226) and makes (71). She is 12 3-point attempts from tying Kim Skaggs ( ) and Sherry Yult for ninth place at 238 and is five made 3-pointers from tying Yult for ninth. She joined Cricket Williams as just the second player in Spartans history with more than 1,000 points and 300 free throws. Riana Byrd (So., C, Richmond, Calif.), blocked 64 shots in her freshman campaign and has 20 more this season, is already in fourth place in the program s career blocks list. She is 54 blocks from tying Lamisha Augustine ( ) for third place all-time. 3 from long range. She is 13th in the nation in 3-pointers made per game (3.2) and leads all Mountain West shooters. Her 42 made 3-pointers are 15 more and her point attempts are nearly 50 more than her next closest conference rival. In addition, Woodberry is fifth overall in the MW, and first among juniors, in total rebounding at 7.2 per game. Her 5.4 defensive boards are third in the league. SEEING DOUBLE With five double doubles, Jasmine Smith (Fr., F, Burbank, Calif.) ranks among the best in the nation and leads the Mountain West. She, Riana Byrd (So., C, Richmond, Calif.) and Rebecca Woodberry (Jr., G, Phoenix, Ariz.) have combined for nine double doubles which also lead the league. BYRD PICKS UP WHERE SHE LEFT OFF LAST SEASON Last year Riana Byrd (So., C, Richmond, Calif.) was the first Spartan to average a double double, 11.4 pts and 10.9 rebs., in 23 years. In the beat goes on for Byrd. She is averaging 9.3 points and 9.8 rebounds. HALL SERVING THEM UP Britta Hall (Fr., G, Tualatin, Ore.) leads the Spartans and all Mountain West freshmen in assists, averaging 3.9 per game. In six of the team s 13 contests Hall has recorded at least five assists and her season-high came against San Francisco (11/20) when she dropped eight dimes on the Dons. STILL ONE OF THE YOUNGEST TEAM San José State was the youngest team in Division I last year with just four years of collegiate experience on the roster (two years of Division I and two years of junior college). With injuries, which have sidelined several players, the Spartans are nearly right back to where they were last year. Ta Rea Cunnigan (Jr., G, Winchester, Calif.), Classye James (Jr., G, East Palo Alto, Calif.) and Rebecca Woodberry (Jr., G, Phoenix, Ariz.) each have two years of collegiate experience. Riana Byrd (So., C, Richmond, Calif.) and Jayzyl Tauala (So., G, Pacifica, Calif.) are working their way back to the lineup and have one year each of college experience. BEING HEALTHY HELPS Classye James (Jr., G, East Palo Alto, Calif.) was hampered by a hip injury all last season but gutted it out in 27 of the team s 30 games. She averaged 7.6 points, shot just.263 from the field and.183 from behind the arc. With a summer to heal, James is showing the game that earned her a McDonalds All-American nomination as a senior in high school. She is averaging 13.7 points, has reached double figure scoring in 10 games, including the last seven in a row. Her shooting has improved to.377 (55-for-146) and in 13 games is more than 85 percent of the way to her season scoring total from a year ago (178 points in 13 games in vs. 206 in 27 games in ). SPARTANS FIRST FIVE SEE FIRST CHANGE In head coach Jamie Craighead s up tempo offense every player on the roster will get lots of time on the court this season. Through 13 games, the Spartans have sent the same five out to start 12 games - Britta Hall (Fr., G, Tualatin, Ore.), Ta Rea Cunnigan (Jr., G, Winchester, Calif.), Classye James (Jr., G, East Palo Alto, Calif.), Rebecca Woodberry (Jr., G, Phoenix, Ariz.) and Riana Byrd (So., C, Richmond, Calif.). The first change to the starting line up came in the 12th game of the year, at Nevada (1/1). Jasmine Smith (Fr., F, Burbank, Calif.) was inserted in place of Hall. 4 Colorado State is riding a six-game winning streak, including a win at San Diego State and victory over New Mexico to open the MW schedule. The Rams are 6-1 in Moby Arena this season. Caitlin Duffy, a sophomore guard, leads the team and ranks 17th in the conference in scoring (12.2 pts). She also leads the team in rebounds (6.2/g). Senior forward Sam Martin and junior guard Gritt Ryder also score in double figures, 11.2 pts. and 10.2 pts., respectively. Martin tops the squad in blocks at 16 overall and Ryder s 4.5 assists per game also lead the team. Head coach Ryun Williams is in his second season leading the Colorado State program. Last season the Rams were Williams brought a career-record into the season. This will be the eighth meeting between these programs, with the Rams holding a dominating 6-1 advantage in the all-time series. The last meeting was in the season as was a Rams win on their home court. TWO INKED TO NLIs The Spartans signed Myzhanique Ladd and Ali Bettencourt to National Letters of Intent to compete for the Spartans beginning in the school year. Ladd is a 5-8 guard who attends Cleveland High School in Seattle, Wash. She has earned All-Metro League honors each of the past two seasons, led the team to the 3A state semifinals in 2012 and last year won the state championship. Over the past two years Cleveland has a record, 30-2 in league action. Ladd has also competed in track and cross country in high school. MyMy (Myzhanique) is a combo guard who could play the one, two or three for us, head coach Jamie Craighead said. She has great athleticism, quickness both north-south and side-to-side, and will be a great fit for what we want to do on both ends of the court. Her best basketball is ahead of her and, as a staff, we re excited to have her as a member of our first recruiting class. A 5-10 guard at Oak Ridge High School in El Dorado Hills, Calif., Bettencourt is a shooter with a quick release and deep range. She earned first-team All-Delta River League, The Sacramento Bee All-Metro Team, and Cal-Hi Sports All-State honors last year after Oak Ridge reached the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section semifinals. Ali is a pure shooter who I ve been recruiting for the last two years. She can shoot it from 3-point range and has worked hard to develop her game off the dribble, which makes her a deadly offensive threat. She ll add much needed depth to our perimeter, which will allow us to go even faster. CUNNIGAN NAMED MW PLAYER OF THE WEEK Ta Rea Cunnigan (JR., G, Winchester, Calif.) has earned Mountain West Women s Basketball Player of the Week honors for games played from Nov , It is the first Mountain West weekly honor for Cunnigan. Cunnigan averaged 22.7 points, 4.0 assists, 1.0 blocks and 4.0 rebounds per game while shooting.415 (22-of-53) from the field and.786 (22-of-28) from the free throw line. CUNNIGAN 13th TO 1,000-POINT PLATEAU Ta Rea Cunnigan (Jr., G, Winchester, Calif.) scored 22 points against UC Riverside, reached the 1,000-point plateau on her first bucket of the second half, and finished the game at 1,010 points for her career. She is the 13th Spartan to reach the milestone, the second fastest to do so (63 games) and now has her sights set on Lora Alexander ( ) who scored 1,019 points in 56 games over two years. VICTORY PUSHES SPARTANS OVER.500 IN SEASON OPENERS With its win over San Francisco State (11/8), the Spartans now sport a record in its 39 -year history of women s basketball. The win was just the second time in the last nine seasons that San José State has won its season opener. NEWCOMERS LOOK ANYTHING BUT NEW The Spartans have six new faces on the court this season, five freshmen and a transfer, and after four games they all look very comfortable in head coach Jamie Craighead s up-tempo style. Three players in particular, Jasmine Smith (Fr., F, Burbank, Calif.), Rebecca Woodberry (Jr., G, Phoenix, Ariz.) and Britta Hall (Fr., G, Tualatin, Ore.), are VERY comfortable. The threesome each hit double digit scoring in the season opening victory. Smith had a 25 points (10-of-14), 11 rebounds (7 offensive), four steals and one assists. It was the second-best season opener in the last 15 years, behind only Amber Jackson s 26 points and 12 rebounds in a victory over Gonzaga to open the campaign and the best start by any freshman in the same time period. Woodberry had a 13 point, 10 rebound, six assist, two steal and one block debut for the Spartans. Her game was the most statistically well rounded, hitting seven shots from the floor, including three from behind the arc and a pair of free throws. Eight of her 10 boards were defensive and helped started the fast break. Against Santa Clara she was in double digits in the scoring column Spartans Miscellaneous Stats Double-Figure Scoring Games (52) Riana Byrd (6), Ta Rea Cunnigan (13), Britta Hall (3), Classye James (10), Jasmine Smith (9), Rachol West (2), Rebecca Woodberry (9) Double-Figure Rebounding Games (16) Riana Byrd (7), Jasmine Smith (6), Rebecca Woodberry (3) Double-Doubles (9) Riana Byrd (3) - 19 pts., 18 reb vs. UMKC; 14 pts., 12 reb at SAC; 10 pts., 14 reb. at SCU; Jasmine Smith (5) - 22 pts., 13 reb at Sac:;13 pts., 10 rebs. vs. USD, 10 pts., 11 rebs. vs. USF, 13 pts., 12 rebs vs. UE, 25 pts., 11 reb. vs. SFSU; Rebecca Woodberry (1) - 10 pts., 13 reb. vs. SFSU Led Team In Scoring Riana Byrd (1), Ta Rea Cunnigan (5), Classye James (1), Jasmine Smith (2), Rebecca Woodberry (5) Led Team In Rebounding Riana Byrd (6), Ta Rea Cunnigan (1), Jasmine Smith (5), Rebecca Woodberry (2) SPARTAN HONORS Preseason All-MW Ta Rea Cunnigan MW Player of the Week Ta Rea Cunnigan (11/11-11/17) The Last Time... When she wasn t reigning treys on the Gators she was handing out a game high seven assists. In addition, she grabbed two rebounds and a steal in her college debut. Against Santa Clara, she hit two more threes, but grabbed six boards and blocked the first shot of her career. LAST TIME OUT San Jose, Calif. - The San Jose State women s basketball team suffered a nine minute span in the first half in which they couldn t buy a field goal and fell to the Utah State Aggies in their Mountain West home opener on Saturday afternoon on Walt McPherson Court. We struggled for an extended amount of time in the first half, head coach Jamie Craighead said. It was a game up to that point, but we need to be consistent for 40 minutes to win. The Spartans went down 11-3 in the first three and a half minutes, but battled back on back-toback 3-pointers from Classye James, who led the team with 15 points, and Britta Hal. Hall hit a free throw and another 3-pointer to tie the game at Jasmine Smith, who along with Riana Byrd each grabbed a game-high10 rebounds, scored a layup with 11:17 left in the first to tie it again at 18-18, but the Spartans (6-7, 0-2 MW) then went ice cold. They didn t score a bucket for the next nine minutes. Utah State opened the second half with an 8-0 run, opening a 25-point advantage and had their biggest lead of the game, 27 points, at with 6:31 to play. We could have easily folded at that point, but I am proud that we fought through it and battled back, said Craighead. 12 Head Coach Jamie Craighead Oregon (2002) First Year On September 16, 2013, Jamie Craighead, who coaches an up-tempo offense and stifling defense, was named the eighth head women s basketball coach at San José State University. I appreciate the opportunity that (Athletics Director) Gene Bleymaier and (Deputy Director) Marie Tuite have given me, said Craighead. After hearing about their vision for the women s basketball program at San José State, I am really excited to take on the challenge of this opportunity. I enjoy living and working in Northern California and have good recruiting ties in the area. I can not wait for the challenge of competing in the Mountain West, a league for which I have tremendous respect. Craighead comes to San José State after spending the past four seasons at Sacramento State, where she was the winningest women s head basketball coach in the last 20 years and the only coach to post a winning conference record at Sacramento State since they entered the Big Sky Conference in the season. Under her guidance the Hornets reached the Big Sky Conference Tournament for just the fifth (2012) and sixth (2013) times in program history. In those appearances, Sacramento State earned its first tournament wins and reached the semi-final round both years. The youngest head coach in Division I when she took over the Hornets in 2009, Craighead s teams, playing a fast-break type offense, led the Big Sky Conference in scoring in each of her four seasons. Sacramento State set several program records in including field goals made, assists, blocked shots and fewest turnovers committed. In addition, the team s 19 wins equaled the program s single-season record, which was set in the season. The Hornets led the Big Sky in points, 3-pointers, and assists and on the defensive end, topped the league in steals and blocks. Also in , Craighead coached Kylie Kuhns and Megan Kritscher, two of the top post players in the Big Sky Conference. Kuhns, at only six feet tall, broke the school and Big Sky career rebounding records during the year, while also leading the team in scoring. For her efforts, Kuhns earned All-Big Sky first-team honors. Kritscher shattered the Big Sky single-season blocks record and ranked fourth in the NCAA in blocks per game for the season. In four seasons, nine of her players garnered All-Big Sky honors. She coached Big Sky Freshman of the Year Fantasia Hilliard, and 23 of her athletes received Academic All-Big Sky Conference honors for their work in the classroom. Prior to accepting the top job at Sacramento State, Craighead spent the season as an assistant for the Hornets before being promoted to Associate Head Coach the following year. Craighead started her coaching career in 2002 under two-time NCAA Division II Coach of the Year Gordy Presnell at Seattle Pacific University. In her three years at SPU, the team posted an 89-5 record, won three PacWest Conference titles, qualified for the NCAA Division II Tournament each year and reached the championship game in After her success in Seattle, she spent two seasons as an assistant at Portland State University before taking a position at Sacramento State. We are very pleased to hire Jamie Craighead, who has Division I head coaching experience and who will lead San José State as we begin playing in the Mountain West, stated Bleymaier. She will be a tremendous asset to our basketball program, the University and to our community. As a collegiate player at the University of Oregon, Craighead led the Ducks to the 2002 WNIT championship after three appearances in the NCAA Tournament. When she finished her career, her point field goals made ranked second all-time in Ducks history. Craighead earned honorable mention Academic All-Pac-10 honors as a senior and graduated from Oregon with a bachelor s degree in educational studies in
