QUICK LOOK AT THE ROADRUNNERS This will be the Runners third game of the year. CSUB (1-1) dropped its season opener at UTEP, but bounced back for a win over Fresno Pacific on Tuesday evening. They are scoring 65.0 points a game and giving up the same. CSUB is shooting.376 from the floor,.278 from three-point range while allowing opponents to hit at a.440 clip including.333 from beyond the arc. Aja Williams leads the CSU Bakersfield offense with a 12.5 ppg average while Malaysia McHenry and Jazmine Johnson are scoring at a 10.0 ppg clip. Jerice Fears, has played only one game, but leads the team in roumving at 9.0 /game and Alexxus Gilbert is at 3.0 assists per outing. Greg McCall is in his seventh season leading the Runners program. He brings an record at CSU Bakersfield into this season. SJSU VS. THE WAC Overall, San José State is 9-34 (26.5 percent) against the current make up of WAC schools. The vast majority of that record is contained in a 5-28 mark against New Mexico State. SJSU has faced five of the eight WAC schools and has a winning record against only Utah Valley (2-0) and Kansas City (1-0). San José State has dropped three straight against WAC team and last defeated a WAC school on December 21, 2013, an victory over Kansas City. WHERE S THE ADVANTAGE IN HOME OPENERS The Spartans have played 43 home openers in the history of the program, but despite what should be a home court advantage, San José State is in its first game of the year on its own court. Recent history has been a bit kinder to the team. SJSU has won four of its last five home openers, with the lone exception, a overtime loss to Pacific last year. SPARTANS ROSTER SECOND YOUNGEST IN DIVISION I In a preseason poll of Media Relations Directors, the Spartans are the second youngest team in Division I women s basketball, based on percentage of freshman and sophomores on the roster. Twelve of SJSU s 15 players are underclassmen, which ties them for second place with Florida International. UNC Greenville has the youngest team in the nation at 87.7 percent underclassmen. FRESHMAN STARTER When Cydni Lewis (Fr., F, Long Beach, Calif.) got the start in the season opener at #8/7 UCLA, she became just the second freshman, the other being Britta Hall in , to be in the starting lineup in the opener in Coach Craighead s five seasons at SJSU. Hall had 27 starts and Jasmine Smith earned five in Myzhanique Ladd (Sr., G, Seattle, Wash.) was the last freshman to start a game for SJSU. She had nine starts in ,000-POINT PROSPECTS Hallie Gennett (Sr., F, Post Falls, Idaho) and Myzhanique Ladd (Sr., G, Seattle, Wash.) each have a chance to reach 1,000-career points this season. Gennett began with 870 points, 130 from reaching the milestone, and with nine in the season opener, is now 121 from the mark. With a minimum of 29 more games this season, Gennett needs to average 4.2 points per game to surpass 1,000. Ladd, who scored 11 in the season opener at #8/7 UCLA, has 647 in her Spartans career. She is 353 points from 1,000 and needs to average 12.2 to reach the plateau Preseason MW Predictions Team (1st-place votes) Points 1. San José State surrendered a 12-point lead in the final 2:40 of regulation and jumped out to a six-point lead in the first 1:30 of overtime, but couldn t make it stand up and lost to the CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners in overtime. Seemingly in command in the fourth period, the Spartans built a gamehigh 12-point lead on a Rachol West three from the corner with 2:40 to go in regulation and it looked like the Spartans would pick up their first road win of the year, but then the wheels came off. The Spartans had seven possessions down the stretch and turned the ball over five times and were only able to put up two shots. Bakersfield (1-2) made SJSU pay with each mistake. And when Batabe Zempare, who led all scorers with 24 points, got an offensive rebound and the put back with eight seconds to go, the game was tied and headed for overtime. The Spartans opened the overtime with a 9-to-3 run to lead and following a pair of Aniya Baker free throws had an advantage with 2:41 left. But a three-point play and layup on the next two possessions made it a one-point game. Nyre Harris, who finished with 17 points, hit a three to push it back to a four-point lead at the 1:48 mark, but by the 22-second mark, that advantage had been erased and a pair of Zempare free throws and Bakersfield was up Down the stretch the team s traded free throws and with an Alyssa Shannon make with seven seconds to go the Spartans fate was sealed. Aniya Baker hoisted a desperation three with two seconds to play, but is fell shots and the Spartans lost Jasmine Smith turned in a superb performance with 18 points and a career-high 13 rebounds, including seven offensive rebounds. Baker had 14 points and Dezz Ramos added 10. Neither team shot the ball well. The Spartans hit just 32.6 percent (28-for-86) while Bakersfield was 31-for-87 (35.6 percent). In four seasons, nine of her players garnered All-Big Sky honors. She coached Big Sky Freshman of the Year Fantasia Hilliard, and 23 of her athletes received Academic All-Big Sky Conference honors for their work in the classroom.
