2 QUICK LOOK AT UNLV This will be the Rebels 20th game of the year. UNLV (11-8, 6-2 MW) is 3-1 on the road in Mountain West games this year, including a victory at San Diego State on Saturday. Overall the Rebels are scoring 66.5 points a game and giving up UNLV is shooting.379 from the floor and.268 from three-point range while opponents are hitting at a.392 clip, including.329 from beyond the arc. UNLV relies heavily on its starters, who average 60.5 of the team 66.5 points per game. Brooke Johnson (6-0, Sr., G) is leading the team in scoring, assists and steals. She is averaging 15.7 points, 3.9 assists and 1.8 steals per game. Katie Powell (6-4, Jr., F/C) tops the team in rebounds, 9.3 per game, and blocks at 1.0 per outing. BENALLY ON PRECIPICE SOPHOMORE THREE-POINT RECORD Analyss Benally (So., G, Shiprock, N.M.) leads SJSU with 48 3-ptrs and ranks sixth in the MW at 2.3/g, and fourth in MW games at 2.6/g. She is one away from equaling the program s sophomore single-season record of 47 threes, which was set by Kari Steele in If Benally continues at her current pace, and the Spartans play only 10 more games, she will finish with 69 threes, which would be the fifth most in single-season program history. FRESHMAN THREE-POINT RECORD COULD FALL AS WELL In , Britta Hall made 43 three pointers, to set the program s freshman record. Megan Anderson (Fr., G, Fresno, Calif.), has made 28 this year, second most on the team, and could reach Hall s mark. Through 20 games, Anderson is averaging 1.4 threes per game. If she continues at her pace this season, she would make 42 threes in 30 games, however, if she stays at her average for Mountain West games, 1.7 per game, she would finish with 45 three pointers...a new freshman record. BENALLY SHOOTS INTO TOP-25 OF SPARTAN CAREER THREE-POINT LIST Analyss Benally (So., G, Shiprock, N.M.) has come from virtually nowhere to enter the top-25 of Spartan career three-point shooters. Benally made one shot all of last season, a three-pointer at Utah State. This year, she has drained 46 threes in 20 games and is on pace to make a total of 69. If she gets to 69, it will be the sixth most by a Spartan in a single season. The 47 threes for her career slots her into 23rd place all-time on the program s three-point list. If she continues at her current pace, and there is no reason to think she won t, right, she projects to complete her SJSU career with 207 three-pointers which would be a new career record for the program. IT ALL COMES DOWN TO REBOUNDS When the Spartans win...they hit the boards...they win the game...period. San José State has not been outrebounded by any of its opponent in its six victories and holds a 269-to-244 advantage in those games, for a +4.2 rebound margin. In its 14 losses, SJSU has been outrebounded 661-to-430 for a rebounding margin of It s a simple formula. LADD CLIMBING THE SJSU CAREER LISTS Entering the Wyoming game, Myzhanique Ladd (Sr., G, Seattle, Wash.) ranks in the top-25 of 16 SJSU career categories. She is 20th in scoring (891), 5th in free throws (271), 11th in free throw attempts (360) and 9th in free throw percentage (.753). Ladd ranks 13th in rebounds (541), 6th in offensive (209) and 18th and defensive boards (332). She is 15th in assists (219), 23rd in steals (117), 21st in three-point attempts (174) and 19th in makes (52) and 13th in three-point percentage (.299). UNLV scored 50 of its 79 points in the paint en route to defeating the San José State women s basketball team in Mountain West action on Wednesday night. The Spartans had no answer for the size and inside game of the Rebels who had four players in double figures, including double doubles from Paris Strawther, 18 points and 11 rebounds, and Katie Powell, 11 points and 13 rebounds. The SJSU (4-10, 1-2 MW) struggled from the floor shooting 30 percent (18-of-60) and endured its worst night of the season from beyond the arc. The Spartans missed their first 10 shots from distance, and hit just 5-of-30 (16.7 percent) in the game, with three of its five treys coming in the fourth quarter when the game was already in UNLV s hands. The Rebels (6-7, 1-1 MW) made 28 buckets in 61 attempts (45.9 percent) with 25 of its 28 baskets coming in the paint. The only field goals outside the lane, which UNLV scored, were a three pointer and a pair of jump shots. In addition, they made 22-of-25 free throw attempts (88 percent) and outrebounded the Spartans 50-to-30. San José State committed five fouls in the first three minutes of the game, put UNLV on the line for nearly seven minutes of the first period and watched the Rebels sink 11-of-13 from the stripe in the quarter. SJSU also spent a good bit of the period at the free throw line as well making 8-of-11, but trailed after 10 minutes. In the second quarter the Rebels took a double-digit lead, with six of its seven buckets beings scored in the paint. They shot 46 percent from the floor and led at the intermission. While UNLV thrived in the second period, San José State made just 2-of-12 from the floor. An Analyss Benally three finally ended an 0-for-10 start for the team from the three-point range and got the Spartans to within 11 with 4:23 to play before the half, but they would get no closer and trailed at the intermission. Five times in the third, SJSU was able to cut the lead to 11, the last on a layup from Cydni Lewis with 2:58 to go. But UNLV closed the period on an 8-0 run, scored the first two buckets of the fourth to lead by 23. They held onto at least a 20-point lead until Courtesy Clark hit a layup with three seconds to go to make the final score Clark finished the game with a career-best eight points. Taylor Turney led the team with 13 points and Myzhanique Ladd had 11 points, five rebounds, five assists and two steals. 15 Head Coach Jamie Craighead Oregon (2002) Fifth Year Craighead s Year-by-Year Coaching Record Entering her fourth season leading the Spartans, Jamie Craighead s teams have set and then broken the program s record for points scored in a season, which currently stands at 2,511, and in set a San José State and Mountain West Conference single-game record when the Spartans scored 119 points in a win over Columbia. Under Craighead s guidance the Spartans reached the semifinals of the 2015 Mountain West Championship Tournament. It marked just the second time in the 41-year history of the program that the team advanced that far in its conference championship tournament. In addition, the team s 15 wins were the most since the team won 18 games. The squad established single-season marks for free throws attempted (726) and made (493) as well as three-pointers attempted (793) and made (245). In , the Spartans set new marks for three-pointers attempted (872) and made (271), assists (501) and total field goal attempts (2,262). In her two seasons, Craighead s players have earned four conference post-season awards for their play on the court. In addition, they have earned 13 Academic All-Mountain West (3.0+ GPA) and four Mountain West Scholar-Athlete honors (3.5+ GPA), two Dean s Scholar (3.65+ GPA) and one President s Scholar designation (4.0 GPA+) as well as an Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sport-Scholar Award and a first-team Capital One Academic All-District VIII honor. Finally, Ta Rea Cunnigan, the school s all-time leader in scoring, graduated Magna Cum Laude in Craighead came to San José State after four seasons at Sacramento State (2010-to-2013), where she was the winningest women s head basketball coach in 20 years and the only coach to post a winning conference record at Sacramento State since entering the Big Sky Conference in the season. Under her guidance, the Hornets reached the conference tournament for just the fifth (2012) and sixth (2013) times in program history. The youngest head coach in Division I when she took over the Hornets, Craighead s teams led the Big Sky Conference in scoring in each of her four seasons. Sacramento State set several program records in and the team s 19 wins equaled the program s single-season record. The Hornets led the Big Sky in points, three-pointers, and assists and on the defensive end, topped the league in steals and blocks. Also in , Craighead coached Kylie Kuhns and Megan Kritscher, two of the top post players in the Big Sky Conference. Kuhns, at only six feet tall, broke the school and Big Sky career rebounding records during the year, while also leading the team in scoring. For her efforts, Kuhns earned All-Big Sky first-team honors. Kritscher shattered the Big Sky single-season blocks record and ranked fourth in the NCAA in blocks per game for the season. In four seasons, nine of her players garnered All-Big Sky honors. She coached Big Sky Freshman of the Year Fantasia Hilliard, and 23 of her athletes received Academic All-Big Sky Conference honors for their work in the classroom. Prior to accepting the top job at Sacramento State, Craighead spent the season as an assistant for the Hornets before being promoted to Associate Head Coach the following year. Craighead started her coaching career in 2002 under two-time NCAA Division II Coach of the Year Gordy Presnell at Seattle Pacific University. In her three years at SPU, the team posted an 89-5 record, won three PacWest Conference titles, qualified for the NCAA Division II Tournament each year and reached the championship game in After her success in Seattle, she spent two seasons as an assistant at Portland State University before taking a position at Sacramento State. As a collegiate player at the University of Oregon, Craighead led the Ducks to the 2002 WNIT championship after three appearances in the NCAA Tournament. When she finished her career, her point field goals made ranked second all-time in Ducks history.
