PTS REB FG% MIN ILLINOIS-CHICAGO FLAMES (1-4) UCF returns to CFE Arena in good spirits on Saturday night to take on Illinois-Chicago after defeating in-state rival Stetson, 94-85, earlier in the week. The Knights are 2-3 on the year with their three losses being by a combined seven points. The Knights have been balanced offensively with five players averaging nine or more points a game. Adonys Henriquez leads that bunch with 11.8 points per game, while Tacko Fall (11.0) and Shaheed Davis (10.8) are also averaging double-digit points. Fall has come on strong lately, scoring in double digits each of the last three games. The 7-foot-6 center currently ranks fifth in the NCAA in field goal percentage (71.4) and 13th in blocks per game (2.80). Sophomore B.J. Taylor has yet to see the court this season due to an injury he suffered during the preseason. Taylor was named to the conference s All-Rookie Team last year after leading UCF and all freshmen in the league in scoring with 12.8 points per game. The freshmen duo of Tacko Fall and Chance McSpadden combined for 44 points. Fall scored 23 points, while McSpadden chipped in 21. Fall and McSpadden are the first UCF duo to score 20 or more points in the same game since March 7, 2014 when Isaiah Sykes (24) and Daiquan Walker (20). Fall garnered his first career double-double, posting career-highs in scoring with 23 points and rebounds with 11 boards. A.J. Davis also had a big game, filling up the stat sheet with 12 points, eight boards, six assists and two blocks. UCF held a 12-point lead with 8:31 left in regulation, but Stetson came storming back to make it a one-point game with 3 minutes remaining. McSpadden nailed two threes in the final minutes to keep the Hatters at bay with the score UCF went 8-for-8 from the charity stripe in the last 30 seconds to fend off Stetson. KNIGHT NEWS THE SERIES Illinois-Chicago holds a 2-1 advantage in the all-time series, winning each of the last two meetings. Last season, the Flames defeated the Knights, 71-60, in Chicago. UCF s lone win was a rout in Orlando on Dec. 11, 1976 DECEMBERS TO REMEMBER The Knights are 21-8 (29-8 with the 2010 vacated wins) in the month of December under head coach Donnie Jones. CHAIRMEN OF THE BOARDS The Knights rank fifth in the NCAA in rebounds per game, averaging Stony Brook leads the nation at rebounds per game. Shaheed Davis leads UCF in rebounding with 8.0 per game. Three other Knights average five or more boards per game in Tacko Fall (6.4), A.J. Davis (5.6) and Daiquan Walker (5.4). UCF grabbed 57 rebounds in their overtime loss against UC Irvine on Nov. 18, which is the most for a single game since Nov. 24, The 57 rebounds also sit tied for sixth in UCF single game history and fourth in The American record books. STINGY DEFENSE UCF has the 34th best defensive field-goal percentage, allowing their opponents to shoot just 37.4 from the field. The Knights bolster a stingy defense despite averaging the nation s eighth fewest fouls per game (15.2). FRESHMAN PHENOM Freshman Tacko Fall currently ranks fifth in the NCAA in field goal percentage, shooting 71.4 percent from the floor. The 7-foot-6 center also ranks 13th nationally in blocked shots per game, averaging SIZE MATTERS UCF has the seventh biggest roster in NCAA Division I men s basketball with an average height of Florida State holds the top spot with an average height of The Knights are also one of seven programs to lead the NCAA with having six players 6-9 or taller on their roster. 6 HEAD COACHING RECORD DONNIE JONES Head Coach Sixth Season Jones, who won a pair of national championships as an assistant at Florida, was named the head coach at UCF on March 29, In his introductory press conference the following day, he said that his goal was for UCF to have continued success and become a factor on the national level. Jones has already helped the Knights achieve those aspirations. TAKING UCF TO NEW HEIGHTS Over the last five seasons, Jones has guided the Knights to three 20-win seasons, wins over nationally-ranked opponents and a spot in one of the nation s premier basketball conference. In , he led the Knights to a perfect 13-0 non-conference record and spent four weeks ranked Top 25 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches and Associated Press Polls. The team finished overall with signature wins over No. 16 Florida, Miami and UMass. In his second seasons, Jones coached UCF to a 22-win season, the fourth-most victories for the program since becoming a Division I school in Their impressive resume, which featured a win over the defending national champion and No. 4-ranked UConn, earned the Knights a spot in the NIT for the first time in school history. After another 20-win season in , the Knights were ready for the next step, the American Athletic Conference. Over the last two seasons, Jones has led the charge into one of college basketball s most prestigious conferences, which has produced two of the last three national champions in Louisville (2013) and Connecticut (2014). SUCCESS OFF THE COURT Under Jones, the Knights are not only shining on the court but also in the classroom. This past season, UCF was given the American Athletic Conference s Team Academic Excellence Award after posting the highest GPA among all men s basketball programs in the league. Jones squad began the tournament with a victory over Western Carolina, giving Marshall its first postseason win since Marshall finished the year 11-5 in C-USA play. Marshall had one of the top offenses in the country and led C-USA by scoring 79.9 points per game. To help accomplish the impressive turnaround, Jones attracted several talented players to Marshall, including Hassan Whiteside, who led the nation in blocks in The post player swatted 182 shots - the fourth-most in NCAA history. Whiteside was named both the C-USA Freshman and Defensive Player of the Year, and garnered Freshman All-America Second Team honors from The Sporting News. Sacramento picked Whiteside with the 33rd overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft. In three seasons at Marshall, Jones compiled a record. TAKING FLORIDA TO THE TOP Prior to taking the helm at Marshall, Jones served for 11 years as an assistant coach at Florida, helping the program claim a pair of national titles and make three trips to the Final Four. Working as an assistant under Billy Donovan from , Jones helped Florida win back-toback national championships in 2006 and He played a key role in Florida s recruiting and player development that led to a school-record nine-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, four Southeastern Conference Eastern Division titles and three SEC Tournament crowns. FINDING TOP TALENT Jones excelled on the recruiting trail while at Florida. During his time at the school, the program signed 11 McDonald s High School All-America selections and boasted top-five national recruiting classes on five occasions. Jones also helped recruit and mentor 12 National Basketball Association Draft picks while at Florida, including five lottery selections. Jones NBA players include Matt Bonner, David Lee, Mike Miller and Jason Williams. Following Florida s 2007 national title, five of Jones pupils - Corey Brewer, Taurean Green, Al Horford, Joakim Noah and Chris Richard - were selected in the draft. PERSONAL LIFE A native of Point Pleasant, West Virginia, Jones earned his bachelor s degree in business education from Pikeville in 1988, and received his master s degree in sports management from Marshall in Jones had a stellar college playing career at Pikeville, recording a schoolrecord 513 career assists. As a senior he finished second nationally in the NAIA with 10.7 assists per game. Jones is married to the former Michelle Gibson.
