The Knights (6-5) are coming off a tough loss on Tuesday against George Washington, while the Pirates (8-5) have not played since Dec. 22, defeating South Carolina State. The Black & Gold have been clicking offensively during the month of December with four players averaging double-digit points throughout UCF s seven games. Redshirt sophomore A.J. Davis has been the Knights ignitor, averaging 13.9 points, 6.4 rebounds and 3.6 assists this December. As a team, UCF is shooting 46.3 percent from the field and 73.3 percent from the free-throw line. For the first time in eight years, the Knights will open conference play on the road. American Athletic Conference ^ Conference USA LAST TIME OUT The Knights lost their final game of 2015 at home to George Washington, UCF held a lead for the first five minutes of the game, but the Colonials cracked down on defense to take an eight-point lead midway through the half. With 10:39 remaining, Tanksley Efianayi and Justin McBride gave the Knights a spark off the bench, leading UCF on a 10-2 run to knot the score at 22. UCF held a lead with two minutes remaining in the first, but GW went on a little run to take a lead at half. UCF stayed in the game in the first half by making 5-of-12 three pointers and going 8-for- 9 from the free-throw line. The Knights struggled in the second half, shooting just 32 percent from the field and 18.2 percent from behind the arc. Meanwhile, the Colonials went on an 18-3 run over a 10-minute span, taking a 23-point lead with just five minutes left in regulation. Efianayi led the Knights in scoring with 12 points, which marks the first time he has reached double-digits at UCF. KNIGHT NEWS THE SERIES The Knights hold a 12-9 (14-9 with 2009 and 2010 vacated wins) advantage over East Carolina in the all-time series. The Pirates have won the last three meetings, which all came last season. The last meeting between the two was in the opening round of the American Athletic Conference Tournament with ECU winning in overtime. UCF last beat ECU on Feb. 9, 2013, while the two were Conference USA foes. The Knights won at home, CONFERENCE OPENERS The Knights have lost their last two conference openers, which also happen to be the program s first two years in The American. For the first time in eight years, the Black & Gold open league play on the road. The last time they did was during the season, winning at Southern Miss, (Jan. 8, 2008). UCF is 2-2 (3-2 with victory) in conference openers under Jones. FALL FACTOR Tacko Fall is shooting an astonishing 74.6 percent from the field, which would rank first in the NCAA if he averaged the minimum of five made baskets per game. He currently is making 4.0 buckets per game. He currently ranks 24th in the nation in blocks per game with He has 27 on the season with 16 coming in December. He was tabbed The American Rookie of the Week on Dec. 7 after averaging 15.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and three blocks in a pair of wins against Stetson and Illinois- Chicago. SIZE MATTERS UCF has the seventh biggest roster in NCAA Division I men s basketball with an average height of Florida State holds the top spot with an average height of The Knights are also one of seven programs to lead the NCAA with having six players 6-9 or taller on their roster. Others with six are: Duke, Louisville, Maryland, San Diego State, UCLA and Oregon State. STUFF-ON BLAIR Staphon Blair tallied two blocks in the Knights win over B-CU, moving into a tie with Issac McKinnon ( ) for fourth in UCF s career records book with 106. The Fort Lauderdale, Fla. native is 21 blocks away from matching Paul Reed ( ) for third in Knights history. Keith Clanton ( ) holds the UCF career blocks record with 227. DECEMBER TO REMEMBER The Knights went 5-2 in December thanks to their efficiency on the offensive end. UCF averaged 80.6 points during the seven-game span, shooting 47.8 percent from the field and 76.8 from the charity stripe. Four Knights averaged double figures in December. A.J. Davis led the way with 13.9 points, while Henriquez chipped in 11.0 per game. Walker tallied 10.4 points per game, and S. G/F UConn KNIGHT NEWS DAVIS IN DECEMBER A.J. Davis has really come on for the Knights in December, averaging 13.9 points, 6.4 rebounds and 3.6 assists. 7 HEAD COACHING RECORD DONNIE JONES Head Coach Sixth Season Jones, who won a pair of national championships as an assistant at Florida, was named the head coach at UCF on March 29, In his introductory press conference the following day, he said that his goal was for UCF to have continued success and become a factor on the national level. Jones has already helped the Knights achieve those aspirations. TAKING UCF TO NEW HEIGHTS Over the last five seasons, Jones has guided the Knights to three 20-win seasons, wins over nationally-ranked opponents and a spot in one of the nation s premier basketball conference. In , he led the Knights to a perfect 13-0 non-conference record and spent four weeks ranked Top 25 in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches and Associated Press Polls. The team finished overall with signature wins over No. 16 Florida, Miami and UMass. In his second seasons, Jones coached UCF to a 22-win season, the fourth-most victories for the program since becoming a Division I school in Their impressive resume, which featured a win over the defending national champion and No. 4-ranked UConn, earned the Knights a spot in the NIT for the first time in school history. After another 20-win season in , the Knights were ready for the next step, the American Athletic Conference. Over the last two seasons, Jones has led the charge into one of college basketball s most prestigious conferences, which has produced two of the last three national champions in Louisville (2013) and Connecticut (2014). SUCCESS OFF THE COURT Under Jones, the Knights are not only shining on the court but also in the classroom. This past season, UCF was given the American Athletic Conference s Team Academic Excellence Award after posting the highest GPA among all men s basketball programs in the league. In , Marshall went and advanced to the second round of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament. The appearance was the first trip to the postseason in 22 years for the school. Jones squad began the tournament with a victory over Western Carolina, giving Marshall its first postseason win since Marshall finished the year 11-5 in C-USA play. Marshall had one of the top offenses in the country and led C-USA by scoring 79.9 points per game. To help accomplish the impressive turnaround, Jones attracted several talented players to Marshall, including Hassan Whiteside, who led the nation in blocks in The post player swatted 182 shots - the fourth-most in NCAA history. Whiteside was named both the C-USA Freshman and Defensive Player of the Year, and garnered Freshman All-America Second Team honors from The Sporting News. Sacramento picked Whiteside with the 33rd overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft. In three seasons at Marshall, Jones compiled a record. TAKING FLORIDA TO THE TOP Prior to taking the helm at Marshall, Jones served for 11 years as an assistant coach at Florida, helping the program claim a pair of national titles and make three trips to the Final Four. Working as an assistant under Billy Donovan from , Jones helped Florida win back-toback national championships in 2006 and He played a key role in Florida s recruiting and player development that led to a school-record nine-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, four Southeastern Conference Eastern Division titles and three SEC Tournament crowns. FINDING TOP TALENT Jones excelled on the recruiting trail while at Florida. During his time at the school, the program signed 11 McDonald s High School All-America selections and boasted top-five national recruiting classes on five occasions. Jones also helped recruit and mentor 12 National Basketball Association Draft picks while at Florida, including five lottery selections. Jones NBA players include Matt Bonner, David Lee, Mike Miller and Jason Williams. Following Florida s 2007 national title, five of Jones pupils - Corey Brewer, Taurean Green, Al Horford, Joakim Noah and Chris Richard - were selected in the draft. PERSONAL LIFE A native of Point Pleasant, West Virginia, Jones earned his bachelor s degree in business education from Pikeville in 1988, and received his master s degree in sports management from Marshall in Jones had a stellar college playing career at Pikeville, recording a schoolrecord 513 career assists. As a senior he finished second nationally in the NAIA with 10.7 assists per game. Jones is married to the former Michelle Gibson. The couple has three children: Madisyn Michelle, Sophie Louise and Donald Isaac. 7
