10 8 Wolf Pack Layups The Nevada Wolf Pack (28-6) defeated the Colorado State Rams (23-11) Saturday to claim the Mountain West Championships trophy, its first conference tournament title since the season and the first since joining the Mountain West. With the win, the Wolf Pack earned its first trip to the NCAA Championship since the season. Nevada landed a 12 seed in the Midwest Region, playing in Milwaukee for the first two rounds. The Wolf Pack s last trip to the big dance came at the end of the season as a seven seed. Nevada advanced to the second round after defeating No. 24 Creighton but lost to No. 5 Memphis. Nevada is in a region with tournament success, as three of the four teams (Nevada, Iowa State, Vermont) won their conference tournament. Purdue was crowned the regular season champion of the Big Ten. The Wolf Pack has surged in the RPI, ranked 29 as of Monday, the Wolf Pack s highest ranking of the year. The Wolf Pack is 10-5 against top 100 opponents and 19-6 against top 200 opponents. Nevada has six top 100 wins (SDSU, Colorado Stat twice, Boise State twice, Fresno State) as ranked by Ken Pomeroy s College Basketball Ranking s and has a total of 17 in the top 200. KenPom puts Nevada at 55th in the nation at the end of the regular season. Nevada became just the fourth No. 1 seed to win the Mountain West Championships in its 17 years of existence and the first to win a #1/#2 matchup in the final game. Sophomore Jordan Caroline netted 16 points in the first half against Colorado State, the second-most he s put up in the first 20 minute this season (at UNLV, 17). Caroline logged his third double-double in the last four games, ending the championship matchup with 23 points and 10 rebounds, now having scored 20 or more in eight games this year. Caroline s effort helped him earn tournament MVP honors. Freshman Josh Hall got into double figures in the points column for the first time since Dec. 21 vs. Towson (15).
