7 Boise State Men s Basketball Game Notes IT STARTS AT THE TOP LEON RICE HEAD COACH 20 WINS AGAIN: Boise State hit the 20-win plateau for the fifth year in a row and the sixth time in Leon Rice s seven years. It is the first time in school history the Broncos have won 20 games in five consecutive seasons. Head coach Bobby Dye and guard Chris Childs led the Broncos to at least 20 wins in , and , the only previous three-year run. The Broncos had just seven 20-win campaigns since becoming a four-year institution before Rice took over. MW COACH OF THE YEAR: Leon Rice was named the Mountain West Coach of the Year, in a vote of fellow conference coaches. It was the sixth time a Boise State coach has been named conference coach of the year and Rice is the fourth different Bronco head man to earn the honor. He was also selected coach of the year in a separate vote by MW media members. District VIII encompasses all Division I schools in Wyoming, Utah, Idaho, New Mexico, Colorado, Nevada and Montana. Rice is the first Boise State head coach to earn the distinction from the USBWA. Greg Graham earned the NABC District 13 Coach of the Year Award in NABC districts are determined by conference. 200 GAMES: Leon Rice coached his 200th game at Boise State Nov. 18, the third head coach to reach 200 games in program history, joining Bobby Dye and Greg Graham. Rice s 123 wins are the most by a Bronco head coach in his first 200 games. 100 WINS: Leon Rice picked up his 100th win as Boise State s head coach, March 4, 2015, at San José State. Rice became the fourth Bronco head coach to reach 100 wins at the school and the first to do so in just five seasons. He accomplished the feat in his 161st game at the helm. Bobby Dye ( ) is the fastest to 100 wins, earning the milestone victory in his 160th game as head coach. Rod Jensen ( ) and Greg Graham ( ) also won 100 games at Boise State, reaching the triple digits in their 182nd and 178th games, respectively Preseason National Coach of the Year (Jeff Goodman, ESPN.com) Mountain West Coach of the Year USBWA District VIII COY UPPING THE OFFENSE: Boise State has been renowned for its offensive prowess ever since Leon Rice arrived. In Rice s first six seasons, the Broncos have led their conference in scoring three times, including pacing the Mountain West twice. In , the Broncos hit a Riceera high with 76.2 points per game, the second-highest in the last 38 years at Boise State (81.4 in ). Four Consecutive 20-Win Seasons 6 BRONCOS IN THE PROS: Since Leon Rice took over as head coach at Boise State, 14 Broncos have gone on to professional basketball careers. James Webb III became the program s first early entrant in the NBA Draft. Webb was signed by the Philadelphia 76ers and spent the entire preseason on the roster. He is currently with Philadelphia s NBA D-League affiliate in Delaware. Anthony Drmic was the NBL (Asutralia) Rookie of the Year. ON THE SCENE: Boise State s appearance at the Gildan Charleston Classic continued a trend of highprofile appearances for the Broncos under Leon Rice. The Charleston Classic is owned and operated by ESPN Events. The group also runs the the Wooden Legacy, where Boise State battled Michigan State and Arizona last season, and the Diamond Head Classic, where the Broncos were runners-up in The appearance at the Diamond Head Classic was Boise State s first major early-season tournament appearance since the 2000 Pearl Harbor Classic. Boise State will play in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off next season. TAKING CHARITY: Boise State has been one of the best free throw shooting teams in the country, under Leon Rice. The Broncos have ranked in the top 25 nationally twice under Rice, including when Boise State shot 74.9 percent from the stripe to set a single-season school record. The mark betterd the team s 74.7 clip. Four of the top six single-season free throw percentages in school history have been established during Rice s tenure as head coach. CHALLENGE ACCEPTED: Boise State has played 25 games against top-25 opponents since Leon Rice took over as head coach. The Broncos played 20 ranked teams in the 25 years prior to Rice s arrival. GETTING DEFENSIVE: Boise State held a schoolrecord nine opponents to fewer than 50 points in , including five in its last 11 games. The Broncos limited a school-record six conference foes to fewer than 50 points, including twice doing so to consecutive opponents. The last time the Broncos held consecutive conference opponents in the 40s was Boise State has held an opponent under 50 points 17 times in the Leon Rice era. The Broncos are 16-1 overall in those games. BRONCO 3-POINT BARRAGE: With Leon Rice at the helm, Boise State has become one of the top threepoint shooting teams in the country in both volume and percentage. The Broncos made a school-record 297 triples,shooting at a 39.2 percent clip. Boise State has made at least 227 three-pointers in each of Rice s first six seasons, claiming seven of the top 10 single-season marks in school history. NOVEMBER SUCCESS: Boise State is in the month of November, under seventh-year head coach Leon Rice. The Broncos are 22-0 at Taco Bell Arena in such games. They Said It... BREAK OUT THE BROOM: Boise State swept seven of its 10 regular-season conference series, including five two-game series. The Broncos earned two wins against Air Force, Colorado State, San Jose State, Utah State and Wyoming, while earning a win in their lone regular-season meeting against San Diego State (home) and UNLV (road). It is the first two-game season sweep of the Rams in program history. It is the second time in school history the Broncos have swept the Aggies, also doing so last season. ROAD WINS: Boise State went 6-3 in Mountain West road games, tying the school record for conference road wins. It is the sixth time in program history the Broncos have won six road games in league play and second under Leon Rice. BIG WIN: Boise State closed the regular season with a victory at Air Force (March 4). The 28-point win is Boise State s widest margin of victory in a conference road game since Feb. 26, 2004, winning at SMU (39 points). It is the largest margin of victory in any road game since Nov. 29, 2010, defeating Northern Illinois (29 points). 20 THREE-POINTERS: Boise State set a school record and tied the all-time Mountain West mark making 20 three-pointers at Air Force (March 4). The Broncos were 20-for-34 (58.8 percent) from beyond the arc. #BRONCOHOOPS NOTES HEATING UP: Boise State has shot better than 40 percent from three-point range in six of its past 12 games. The Broncos had eclipsed that plateau just once in the first 19 games of the season. The Broncos are when scoring at least 70, and when failing to reach that mark. CAREER NIGHT: Boise State won at Loyola Marymount (Dec. 5) thanks in large part to career nights from three Broncos off the bench. Zach Haney (nine), Marcus Dickinson (eight) and Cameron Oluyitan (six) all posted then-career-high scoring outputs. The trio combined for 19 points in the first half. TIME TRAVEL: From Nov. 20 to Dec. 18, Boise State played seven games without playing in the same time zone two games in a row. BENCH PRODUCTION: Boise State s bench is averaging 25.5 points per game, including 11 games with 30 or more points coming from reserves. SHARING THE BALL: Boise State recorded a season-high 23 assists on 34 field goals in its March 4 win at Air Force. The 23 assists are the most in a game since tallying 26 against Walla Walla Jan. 5, 2013, and the second most in Leon Rice s tenure as head coach. ROAD LESS TRAVELED: Beginning with its trip to the Charleston Classic and ending when it returned home from LMU, Boise State logged 9,138 miles over three weeks. The stretch included eight games in all four time zones in the continental United States. YOUTH MOVEMENT: Boise State has two seniors, one junior, five sophomores and five freshmen on this year s roster. The Broncos were among the oldest teams in the country last season with four redshirt seniors. NEW FACES: Seven members of the Broncos had never suited up for Boise State before the season opener, including four freshmen, one junior college transfer and two student-athletes who sat out last season while on the Boise State roster. COSTA RICA: Boise State spent six days in Costa Rica in August, on its first foreign tour under Leon Rice. The Broncos played four games against international competition, numerous cultural experiences and various team-building activities. UNBALANCED SCHEDULE: The Mountain West s 11 teams each play an 18-game conference schedule, missing one team at home and another on the road. This season, Boise State will not host UNLV and will not travel to San Diego State. The Broncos have won at SDSU each of the last two years. FLIPPING THE SCRIPT: Boise State opened conference play Dec. 28, with a win at Utah State. It is Boise State s third consecutive road win against the Aggies, the Broncos first three road wins in the all-time series. Utah State won the first 18 games played on its home floor. PUERTO RICO NEXT YEAR: Boise State will travel to the 2017 Tire Pros Puerto Rico Tip-Off. The tournament will take place Nov. 16, 17 and 19, and Boise State will be joined by Florida State, Illinois State, Iowa State, South Carolina, Tulsa, UTEP and Western Michigan. VS RANKED OPPONENTS: Boise State has won three road games against teams ranked in the top 25 of the AP Poll in school history. Two of those wins have come under Leon Rice. The Broncos won at No. 24 San Diego State Feb. 28, The other such win under Rice came Nov. 28, 2012, at No. 11 Creighton. #BRONCOHOOPS NOTES RICE COACHING TREE: Leon Rice s Boise State program focuses on development- players and staff alike. In his first six seasons, Rice had just five assistants and three went on to become head coaches: Dave Wojcik (San Jose State), Jeff Linder (Northern Colorado) and Shaun Vandiver (Emporia State). CONTINUITY WITH RILLIE: Assistant coach John Rillie has been on staff for the duration of Leon Rice s tenure. Rillie started as the director of basketball operations in , before taking on the role of assistant coach the following season. A heralded recruiter with a keen eye for talent, Rillie also helps with the development of Boise State s game plans and perimeter players. Rillie s career on the sidelines began after a 16- year professional playing career, predominantly in his native Australia. He played in the 2004 Olympic Games as a member of Australia s National Team. ASSEMBLING A STAFF: Leon Rice hired two new assistant coaches this season, bringing on Phil Beckner and Mike Burns to complete his staff. PHIL BECKNER Beckner has been a collegiate assistant coach for six seasons, plus one year as an assistant coach in the NBA D-League. He joins the Broncos after one season at Nebraska. A highly-regarded player developer, Beckner worked closely with NBA All-Star Damian Lillard during his time at Weber State and preparing to be the sixth overall selection in the 2012 NBA Draft. Beckner also helped recruit and coach four more Wildcats who earned Big Sky Conference MVP honors. MIKE BURNS Burns spent last season as the interim head coach at Pacific. He was also previously the head coach at Eastern Washington. During his 22 years of collegiate coaching, Burns has spent time in the Pac-12, West Coast and Big Sky Conferences. AZTEC CONQUEST: Boise State mounted the most improbable of comebacks Feb. 27, at San Diego State, to beat the Aztecs Trailing by nine with 1:03 left, the Broncos scored the game s final 12 points. They went 6-of-6 from the free throw line and Nick Duncan drilled two three-pointers to take advantage of SDSU missing seven consecutive free throws. The win snapped San Diego State s streak of 164 consecutive wins when leading at the five-minute mark. The streak dated to Jan. 9, AZTEC CONQUEST PT. 2: With its win Feb. 27, 2016, at San Diego State, Boise State became the first team to win at Viejas Arena in consecutive seasons since BYU in and The Broncos knocked off the Aztecs 56-46, Feb. 28, 2015, to complete a season sweep that year and snap what was then a 29-game home win streak for SDSU. Austin watched Lillard blossom from a prep star at Oakland High School into a revelation at Weber State where he became the sixth overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft and went on to be named the NBA Rookie of the Year. Lillard has returned the favor in recent years, watching, helping and encouraging Austin. Lillard came to Boise State s game at Oregon this season, waiting outside the locker room at the end of the night to discuss Austin s 16-point effort with him. Boise State assistant coach Phil Beckner worked closely with Lillard during his time at Weber State and remains the NBA All-Star s personal trainer in the offseason. At Boise State, Duncan has racked up 86 wins in his career, second most in school history and one win shy of the record. Duncan led his native Australia to the silver medal at the U17 World Championship. After completing his prep career in Bend, Ore., playing for his father (Craig) at Mountain View High School, Reid spent two seasons at College of Southern Idaho. His Division I aspirations took him to Arkansas Little-Rock for one season. Reid ultimately decided to take a chance on himself, transferring to Boise State as a walk-on and knowing he would have to sit out a year. After one semester he was put on scholarship, and before his first game as a Bronco he was a team captain. In his lone season playing for Boise State, Reid has appeared in every game and is the team s third-leading scorer (10 ppg). SIXTH MAN: James Reid has started 15 games this season, but turned in some of his best performances coming off the bench. Reid is averaging 10.2 points per game in a reserve role. LEADERSHIP PERSONIFIED: James Reid sat out the season due to NCAA transfer rules, but made his presence felt in the practice gym. It was the most by any Trojan player in four years. While at College of Southern Idaho, Reid made 100-of-114 free throws during his two-year career. MARCUS DICKINSON SEASON SAVER: With Boise State trailing by five and just 11 minutes left in its first round NIT game against Utah, freshman Marcus Dickinson sparked a game-winning, season-extending run. Dickinson scored six consecutive Bronco points in two minutes, then with 4:55 to play hit a gametying three-pointer. His free throw with 45 seconds remaining capped a 16-1 run and put the Broncos ahead by 10. Dickinson s career-high 12 points against Utah account for 14.1 percent of his scoring output this season. INDIVIDUAL NOTES THREE-HEADED MONSTER: Boise State has used a three-man rotation at its five position, with each Zach Haney, Robin Jorch and David Wacker contributing to the team s success. Combined, the trio is averaging 11.5 points and 9.3 rebounds. ZACH HANEY STRETCHING THE DEFENSE: Zach Haney made a career-high three three-pointers against Fresno State (Feb. 28). Haney was 3-for-3 from beyond the arc in the game, his first career outing with more than one made triple. Haney is 4-for-6 from deep in the last five games. COUNT ON IT: Zach Haney has scored in 26 of the 29 games he has played this season, including at least six points 12 times. Haney is averaging 14 points and 10.8 rebounds per 40 minutes.
