6 Boise State Men s Basketball Game Notes DYNAMIC DUO PRESEASON ALL-MW: Anthony Drmic and James Webb III were selected to the preseason All-Mountain West First Team. Drmic was also picked to the preseason All-MW First Team prior to last season. He has twice made the All- Mountain West Second Team at year s end. Webb, a redshirt junior, is the only non-senior on the preseason all-conference team. He was a second-team All-MW pick last season as well as the conference s newcomer of the year and an alldefensive team selection. Boise State is the only school with two representatives on the five-member preseason all-conference team. BLENDING TOGETHER: Despite the heaps of individual accolades and this marking the third season Anthony Drmic and James Webb III have been together at Boise State, the duo entered the season having only been on the floor at the same time for 41:18 of regular season game action. Drmic and Webb had never played together at home in the regular season. ANTHONY DRMIC RS-Senior Endeavor Hills, Victoria, Australia SENIOR YEAR, TAKE TWO: Anthony Drmic was granted a fifth year of eligibility after his campaign was cut short by injury. Drmic played in just seven games during his fourth campaign as a Bronco before undergoing season-ending ankle surgery. Doctors performed reconstructive surgery on his left ankle Jan. 15, 2015, and Drmic is still recovering. He has been a full participant in practice since September. COMIN FOR THAT NO. 1 SPOT: Anthony Drmic has 1,836 career points, fourth all-time. He is 108 points shy of Tanoka Beard s all-time record (1,944). If Drmic plays all six games the rest of the season he would need to average 18.0 points per game to break the record. Points 1. 1,944 Tanoka Beard ,927 Steve Connor ,912 Derrick Marks ,836 Anthony Drmic 2011-Pr 5. 1,698 Coby Karl ,660 Abe Jackson ,602 Chris Childs ,485 Roberto Bergersen SCORING LEADER: Anthony Drmic was Boise State s leading scorer each of his first three seasons. Drmic averaged 12.0 points per game as a freshman, 17.7 as a sophomore and 15.9 as a junior. He joined Tanoka Beard ( ) and Abe Jackson ( ) as the only Broncos in school history to lead the team in scoring three seasons. Beard is the only four-time scoring leader. CRASHING COBY S CLUB: Anthony Drmic joined an exclusive club at Boise State when he recorded a steal Dec. 30, against UC Davis. Drmic has now eclipsed the 1,500-point, 500-rebound, 200-assist and 100-steal plateaus. With his 100th steal he joined Coby Karl as the only Broncos in program history to reach all of thos milestones. He is also just the third player in Mountain West history to achieve those numbers; matching Lee Cummard (BYU, ) and Wink Adams (UNLV, ). HE S ONE OF THE ALL-TIME GREAT COMPETITORS I VE EVER COACHED. IT S ANTHONY DRMIC, ADAM MORRISON AND CASEY CALVARY. -HEAD COACH LEON RICE- DRMIC MOVES UP: Anthony Drmic is averaging 12.3 points per game this season and now has 1,836 for his career (14.7 ppg). Drmic moved ahead of Coby Karl for fourth on Boise State s all-time scoring list Dec. 30. MORE THAN A SCORER: Anthony Drmic became the 14th Bronco in program history to eclipse 500 rebounds in his career. Drmic is also the 24th Bronco to tally at least 200 assists in a career. AS WE WERE SAYING...: Anthony Drmic was held scoreless against Utah State (Jan. 5), for just the second time in his career and the first time since his freshman season. 7 DYNAMIC DUO MOUNTAIN WEST PLAYER OF THE YEAR CANDIDATE JAMES WEBB III RS-Junior Augusta, Ga. Feb. 17, 2016 at New Mexico III-TIME MW POW: James Webb III has been named Mountain West Player of the Week three times this season. Webb earned the award for the weeks ending Dec. 20, Jan. 3 and Jan. 10. He technically earned three honors in four weeks, but the Broncos did not play during the week between his awards, giving him each of the last three MW POW honors he has been eligible to receive. Webb has been named the conference player of the week four times in his career. His latest award came after averaging 18.5 points and seven rebounds in Boise State s wins against Utah State (Jan. 5) and Fresno State (Jan. 9). Webb scored 25 against the Bulldogs to help the Broncos start MW play 3-0. DOUBLE-DOUBLES: James Webb III has recorded nine double-doubles this season and is averaging 15.9 points and 9.2 rebounds per game. Webb had eight double-doubles last season. Ryan Watkins averaged a double-double in (11.9 points and 10.6 rebounds), becoming the first Bronco to do so since Only four times in program history has a Bronco averaged a double-double for a season, including just twice since joining Division I in BIG GAME PERFORMER: James Webb III played arguably the best game of his career Nov. 19, at No. 12/10 Arizona. Webb scored a career-high 27 points to go with nine rebounds as he kept the Broncos in the game until the Wildcats used a 13-5 run in the final four minutes to win Webb scored Boise State s first 15 points of the second half, scoring in every way imaginable. GOOD OMEN: James Webb III is the third Bronco to win a conference s Newcomer of the Year Award and the first since Previously, Arnell Jones (1987) and Joe Wyatt (1996) earned the honor in the Big Sky Conference. In their next season, both Jones and Wyatt were named first-team allconference. Jones was the 1988 Big Sky Player of the Year. PERFECT WEBB: James Webb III was 7-for-7 from threepoint range at New Mexico (Jan. 18), setting Mountain West and Boise State records for most three-pointers made without a miss in a single game. It was just the 59th time in NCAA history anybody made at least seven triples without missing. Only 12 times has anyone made more. The NCAA record is 10, while four times someone has made nine and seven 8-for-8 performances. I DON T KNOW IF THERE S A BETTER PLAYER AT HIS POSITION THAN JAMES WEBB. I WOULD SAY HE S ONE OF THE ELITE PLAYERS IN OUR GAME. -ARIZONA HEAD COACH SEAN MILLER- BIG PLUS: In MW play, Boise State outscored its opponents by 211 points while James Webb III was on the floor, the largest margin of any Bronco. Opponents averaged just 56.9 points per 40 minutes with Webb on the floor, while Boise State averaged NIKE BASKETBALL ACADEMY: James Webb III was one of 26 college basketball players to attend the invitation-only Nike Basketball Academy June 26-30, in Santa Monica, Calif. The camp featured instruction from current NBA stars such as LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant, James Harden and Anthony Davis, as well as Hall of Famers Scottie Pippen and Gary Payton. Webb was widely lauded for his performance at the camp with many analysts noting his shooting ability and athleticism. Hall of Fame basketball writer Frank Burlison called Webb the second-best jump shooter at the event. TAKING HIS OPPORTUNITY: James Webb III took his opportunity and ran with it. Webb did not score in Boise State s first five contests, seeing the floor in just three of them and playing a combined 13 minutes. In the Broncos sixth game, he led Boise State in scoring at North Carolina State (12 points) after not playing the first 26 minutes. Over the final 29 games, Webb averaged 12.4 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. He started 27 games, scored in double figures 20 times and recorded eight double-doubles. Most Double-Doubles in a Season (Since ) Ryan Watkins Reggie Larry Arnell Jones Matt Nelson Reggie Larry Matt Nelson Mark Sanchez James Webb III Arnell Jones Tanoka Beard Jason Ellis James Webb III Preseason All-MW First Team MW Newcomer of the Year All-MW Second Team All-MW Defensive Team 2015 Nike Basketball Academy Participant FORGING HIS OWN PATH: James Webb III did not take the typical path to basketball relevancy. In addition to focusing on baseball until his junior year of high school and not being able to dunk until he was a senior, Webb attended four different high schools or prep schools in three different states before initially being declared a partial qualifier by the NCAA. His qualifier status was granted weeks after starting his freshman year at North Idaho College, but Webb stuck out the season. In his one year at NIC ( ), Webb averaged 9.2 points and 5.3 rebounds in 31 games, including 17 starts. Upon finally arriving at Boise State, Webb redshirted the campaign. Five games into his redshirt sophomore season he still had not scored for the Broncos. Things changed when the Broncos played at North Carolina State, the closest the team has played to Webb s family. He scored 12 points against the Wolf Pack and never looked back. CRASHING THE BOARDS: James Webb III has played 58 games as a Bronco and has led the team in rebounding in 45 of them. Webb has grabbed at least 10 rebounds 24 times in his career. Through 26 games this season he has posted double-digit rebounds 12 times. BIG NIGHT: James Webb III hauled in a career-high 18 rebounds to go with 24 points Jan. 20, against San José State. He came up just short of Boise State s first game since 2005 (Jason Ellis) MW Regular Season Champions

11 Feb. 17, 2016 at New Mexico #BRONCOHOOPS NOTES CAREER RECORD WATCH HISTORIC HOME GAME: When Boise State hosted Oregon (Dec. 12), it was the seventh time in program history a ranked nonconference opponent played on the Broncos home floor and first since Dec. 29, 2007, against BYU. Boise State is now 4-3 all-time in those games after defeating the Ducks RACKING UP RANKED FOES: This year is the first in program history Boise State has faced four nonconference games against AP Top-25 opponents in the same season. Three such games in November marked the second time in school history the Broncos have played three games against ranked teams in the same calendar month (February 2012; at San Diego State, at UNLV, vs San Diego State). MARQUEE MEETING: Boise State s home game against Oregon, marked just the fourth time in program history the Broncos have hosted a nonconference game between two teams returning from the NCAA Tournament. Previously: Dec. 10, 1988 vs Oregon State; Dec. 10, 1994 vs Pepperdine; and Dec. 14, 2013 vs Saint Mary s. RINSE, REPEAT: Boise State took on No. 3 Michigan State and No. 11 Arizona in back-to-back games at the DirecTV Wooden Legacy. It is the third time in program history Boise State played consecutive games against ranked opponents. The last instance was the first two games of the season, opening at No. 17 Cincinnati (Nov. 18, 2000) and No. 4 Kansas (Nov. 20, 2000). Prior to that, Boise State hosted No. 15 Washington (Dec. 4, 1998), before playing at No. 11 Indiana (Dec. 11, 1998). RARE REMATCH: Boise State and Arizona squared off twice in November, marking the 36th time Boise State has faced a nonconference opponent twice in the same season since joining Division I in Of the previous 35 instances, 22 occurred in the 1970s and 1980s. The last time was a sameseason home-and-home against Fresno State in the campaign. SO SOON?: The Bronco-Widlcat matchups on Nov. 19 and Nov. 29, marked just the 10th time Boise State met a nonconference opponent twice in a two-week span and the fifth time such a rematch happened within 11 days. The only four instances that have had fewer days between meetings were 2003 against Idaho (Dec. 6 & Dec. 13), 2001 against Idaho (Nov. 24 & Dec. 1), 1997 against Idaho State (Dec. 3 & Dec. 10) and 1970 against College of Great Falls (Dec. 5 & Dec. 11). DOUBLE-DOUBLES: Chandler Hutchison and James Webb III each recorded a double-double against Northern Arizona (Nov. 16). It was the first of Hutchison s career and ninth for Webb. REIGNING CHAMPS: Boise State is the defending Mountain West regular-season champion and the nonconference schedule reflected that. The Broncos played four games against the defending regular-season champion from three leagues in nonconference play (Big Sky, Big West, Pac-12 [twice]), the most in the Mountain West. PLAYING THE PAC: Boise State has played three games against Pacific-12 Conference foes this season. In Boise State s first five games against Division I opponents, Duncan played all but 14 minutes. Foul trouble limited him to 24 minutes against Arizona (Nov. 29), but during Duncan s 24 minutes on the floor, the Broncos and Wildcats were tied in the scoring column. BETTER WITH HIM: In 24 games against Division I opponents this season, the Broncos have outscored opponents by a total of 103 points. With Nick Duncan on the floor, Boise State has a 119-point edge. Duncan has logged 760 minutes, in those minutes the Broncos are scoring 78.1 points per 40. Without Duncan in the lineup, Boise State averages 67.0 points per 40 minutes. AT THE WOODEN: Nick Duncan scored in double figures in all three games of the DirecTV Wooden Legacy (Nov ). Duncan led the Broncos during the tournament with 14.3 points per game on 46.7 percent shooting, including 39.1 percent from beyond the arc. He scored 19 points against No. 3 Michigan State to go with five rebounds, two steals, an assist and a block. HIGH PRAISE: Arizona head coach Sean Miller singled out Nick Duncan when speaking to reporters prior to the Nov. 19 matchup between the Wildcats and Broncos, saying He is one of the great shooters in the game. After Duncan scored 21 points with five threepointers Miller again spoke about the mismatch Duncan creates. He s a 6-foot-10 two-guard who defends your center. THREE-POINT THREAT: Nick Duncan is a career 37.4 percent three-point shooter, making 170 with at least seven games remaining in his junior year- already No. 9 in school history. ON THE WORLD STAGE: A native of Sydney, Australia, Nick Duncan once again represented his home country this summer. Duncan took part in the 2015 World University Games. He previously played in the U17 and U19 World Championships. CHANDLER HUTCHISON HUTCHISON THE AGGRESSOR: Chandler Hutchison had shown flashes of his elite athleticism through his first year and a half, but Jan. 5 at Utah State, Hutchison scored 15 points on 5-of-6 shooting, including his first three dunks of the season. Just minutes into the game, Hutchison drove the lane and slammed on two Utah State defenders. He continued his high-wire act in the second half when he threw down two transition dunks. ADAPTING AGAIN: After finding his place in the starting lineup midway through last year, Chandler Hutchison has become an even bigger factor this season off the bench. Hutchison started the first seven games this year playing 21.5 minutes per game. He has come off the bench the last 19 games and averaged 20.3 minutes. The Broncos are 14-5 since Hutchison began coming off the bench, while he is averaging 6.8 points and 4.2 rebounds.
